There is a decline in enrolment for Indian students in Canada

  • Policy Changes: Stricter study permit caps, eligibility criteria, and work limits introduced by the Canadian government.
  • Diplomatic Tensions: Disputes between India and Canada, including diplomat expulsions, impact permit processing.
  • Increased Financial Burden: Higher proof of funds requirements and overall costs discourage Indian students.
Recent policy changes in Canada have significantly impacted Indian student enrolment. The Canadian government has introduced stricter caps on study permits, reduced work hours for international students, and raised financial proof requirements.
Diplomatic tensions between India and Canada have exacerbated the decline in student enrolment. The expulsion of Canadian diplomats, who were responsible for processing study permits, has led to a sharp decrease in the number of permits issued.

Indian student enrollment and policy shifts in Canada

Recent policy changes in Canada have drastically reduced Indian student enrolment. The government has implemented stricter caps on study permits, with a 35% reduction for 2024, and has introduced higher financial proof requirements, making it harder for Indian students to gain access.
Additionally, new work restrictions limit off-campus work to 24 hours per week and tighten eligibility for post-graduation work permits. These changes reduce the opportunities for students to support themselves financially while studying, discouraging many from choosing Canada as their educational destination.
Diplomatic tensions between India and Canada have further impacted student enrolment. The expulsion of Canadian diplomats responsible for processing permits has led to an 86% drop in study permits issued to Indian students in the last quarter of 2023, adding another layer of difficulty.
Increased scrutiny in the application process also contributes to the decline. Designated learning institutions must now confirm each letter of acceptance directly with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), slowing down the process and adding stress for prospective students.
The combined effect of stringent policy changes, heightened financial requirements, and diplomatic tensions has led to a significant decline in Indian student enrolment in Canada. These factors create a more challenging environment for Indian students, reshaping their educational choices and impacting the broader landscape of international education in Canada.

Slow Loading Times

Check Your Internet Connection

One of the most common reasons for slow loading times in Yandex Games is a poor internet connection. Ensure your device is connected to a stable and fast network. You can do this by running a speed test on your internet connection. If your internet speed is below the recommended levels, try restarting your router or contacting your internet service provider for assistance.

Clear Browser Cache

Over time, your browser cache can become cluttered with old data, which can slow down the loading times of websites, including Yandex Games. Clearing your browser cache can help resolve this issue.
  • For Chrome: Go toSettings>Privacy and Security>Clear Browsing Data.
  • For Firefox: Go toOptions>Privacy & Security>Cookies and Site Data>Clear Data.

Disable Browser Extensions

Some browser extensions can interfere with the performance of Yandex Games. Try disabling any unnecessary extensions and see if the loading times improve.
  • For Chrome: Go toSettings>Extensionsand toggle off the extensions.
  • For Firefox: Go toAdd-ons>Extensionsand disable the extensions.

Game Crashes or Freezes

Update Graphics Drivers

Outdated graphics drivers can cause games to crash or freeze. Ensure your graphics drivers are up-to-date.
  • For Windows: Go toDevice Manager>Display Adapters, right-click your graphics card, and selectUpdate Driver.
  • For macOS: Go toSystem Preferences>Software Update.

Reduce In-Game Graphics Settings

Some Yandex Games might be too demanding for your current hardware setup. Lowering the in-game graphics settings can help stabilize performance and prevent crashes.

Close Background Applications

Running multiple applications simultaneously can consume a significant amount of your system’s resources, leading to game crashes. Close any unnecessary applications before playing Yandex Games.

Audio Issues

Check Volume Settings

If you’re experiencing no sound or distorted audio while playing Yandex Games, first check your device’s volume settings. Ensure the volume is turned up and not muted.

If you’re still experiencing issues with game progress not being saved, reach out to Yandex Games support for further assistance. Provide them with detailed information about the problem for a quicker resolution.

Issues with In-Game Purchases

Verify Payment Method

If you’re having trouble making in-game purchases, ensure your payment method is valid and has sufficient funds. Double-check your payment information for any errors.

Check for Purchase Confirmation

After making a purchase, check for a confirmation email or receipt. If you haven’t received one, there might be an issue with the transaction. Contact Yandex Games support with your transaction details for assistance.

Disable Ad Blockers

Ad blockers and other browser extensions can sometimes interfere with in-game purchases. Disable these extensions and try making the purchase again.

Visual Glitches and Artifacts

Refresh the Page

Sometimes, visual glitches can be resolved by simply refreshing the page. PressF5or click the refresh button in your browser.

Update Browser and Graphics Drivers

Outdated browser versions and graphics drivers can cause visual glitches. Ensure both your browser and graphics drivers are up-to-date.

Adjust Display Settings

If you’re experiencing visual artifacts, try adjusting your display settings. Lower the resolution or change the refresh rate to see if it improves the visuals.

Multiplayer Connectivity Issues

Check Network Settings

For multiplayer games on Yandex Games, a stable internet connection is crucial. Ensure your network settings are optimized for gaming, with low latency and minimal packet loss.

Enable Port Forwarding

Some multiplayer games require specific ports to be open on your router. Check the game’s support page for port forwarding instructions and configure your router accordingly.

Use a VPN

If you’re experiencing connectivity issues, try using a VPN. A VPN can sometimes bypass network restrictions or improve connection stability.

Conclusion

Yandex Games provides a vast array of enjoyable games, but technical issues can occasionally disrupt your experience. By following these troubleshooting steps, you can resolve most common problems and get back to gaming. Whether it’s slow loading times, login troubles, or connectivity issues, these solutions will help you maintain a smooth and enjoyable experience on Yandex Games. 2024.06.10 19:22 wealthyGorgeousYoung Reasons for Our Troubles & A Way Forward

Dear fellow Muslims of Palestine,
Assalamualaikum,
Just wrote to say everyone is at their wit’s end mourning your suffering on our cultural forums. Thought about reaching out to you lovely folk with the hope that you will be in a position to frankly evaluate what is going on.
1. I noticed a video about boycotting western goods. This is only fine if you have your own industry & production. Since most Arab/ Muslim nations do not make their own cars, planes, goods or electronics you may be inclined to buy Asian goods (from downstream civilizations).
a. This is a worse alternative because buying Asian goods means importing Asian vices (like gender bending, sexuality bending, race – harm & other abominable & unimaginable vices that I will not mention here but as an example consider that Asians have a practice of atrophying, miniaturizing & severing each other’s genitalia or appendages; in China they used to atrophy the feet of women by foot-binding, in Asia they atrophy trees & miniaturize them using the “bonsai tree techniques”; for them consuming dogs & snakes & attacking each other’s genitalia is normal & you don’t want that vices in your midst ). This process of importing the vices of a nation along with their manufactures is called the negative externalities of trade or (negative) supply chain spillovers (in business).
b. The west has been suffering from similar negative supply chain spillovers & negative externalities. The rise of Japan & importing Japanese goods in the early 1900s resulted in the “rolling 1920s” and then followed by a stock market crash. After WW2 the West again bought from Japan in the 1960s & it resulted in sexuality-bending & gender bending in the 1960s (of the Hippies). It was mitigated when Japanese auto manufacturers decided to open factories on western soil instead of Japanese soil but this resulted in the Japanese buying large tracts of real-estate in the US (in 1980s) & today the Japanese have taken over Hawaii (through legal immigration).
c. The demographic & immigration trends ought to be the opposite: inner & outer beauty ought to be advancing & becoming ubiquitous. By inner beauty we ask for moral (correct) values & by outer beauty we refer to the Caucasoid folk who are the fairest in known history. This means white races (which includes the Melanochroid Arabs who are part of the Caucasoid race) & good, loving theology (as espoused by Hazrath Ibrahim SW in the faiths of Judaism, Christianity & Islam) ought to be advancing & idolatrous & incorrect practices & races ought to be improved by population management & loving kindness (i.e. live life to the fullest & make love but abstain from reproduction particularly if there are not enough available resources & if one is not a desirable phenotype/genotype). This is good for all humankind.
2. The infighting between the children of Ibrahim SW (between Jews & Muslims, Israelis & Palestinians etc.) is perhaps gladdening the misguided & it grieves the Most High God (Allah SWT).
3. This letter is from a Pakistani Muslim. Perhaps our plight will give you some perspective & encourage you to love the Israelis & Zionists. We Pakistanis are not exactly winning against the idolaters (Ind-ans) & mongoloid Asiatic on the Eastern front of the Western hemisphere. In your time of trouble I hope you will consider that we are ready to die in the defense of the Islamic world (& we have been embracing martyrdom) but our death is little consolation if the lands are lost & other nations threatened & compromised in virtue.
We in Pakistan are considering whether it would have been better to let the Israelis or even the white Anglo-Saxon Protestant Christians rule over India. Considering what the Anglo-Saxons have done for North America by removing the red Indian idolater & replacing them with a beautiful, fair & Christian folk & a far better civilization we wish we had not resisted the British colonial rule. Now we have to suffer at the hands of brown/black idol worshippers which is much worse for us & the lands & the future of the people of the region. In light of this consider this: consider immigrating to the West (I know they will welcome you).
Consider abstaining from resisting the Israeli Jews because I tell you that we would take Israeli white Jewish settler- colonization over Hindu brown/black presence. If you are kind, friendly, loving & compliant to your betters then maybe there is hope of the Israelis & Europeans coming to our rescue in the East. But if you give the Israelis & Europeans trouble in the Levant (Al Quds) then when will help ever reach us? We need both of you to help advance what is beautiful & loving & end the infighting. In return we in Pakistan who have failed you are more than willing to abstain from reproducing our lesser peoples riven by poverty & an inhospitable climate & misguided culture, so you may establish a fair culture, a fair climes & loving beautiful peoples in the lands (may whoever is the best triumph & the rest celebrate, aid & rejoice in the felicity of others). This is because the lands belong to whoever is best at beautifying the lands AND the peoples (not to those who came first or second or third).
4. I believe we are losing because we do not love each other enough & engage in race-harm perhaps (which is the act of making attractive white people non-white, or physically out of shape causing skin & hair issues). As a result our Muslim peoples are not as tall, white, blonde, blue eyed, wealthy, prosperous, educated, industrialized, modernized, free & loving enough. This is not our fault but due to a need for ijtihad (reform) in our faith.

TLDR:
1. Boycotting western goods only works if you are doing your own manufacturing / industrialization otherwise you end up buying Asian goods which is likely to result in the vices suffered like sexuality-bending, gender-bending & other abominations. The West has had a history of suffering from such vices due to importing Asian goods & there is a renewed interest in avoiding products from downstream civilizations. The Arabs & Europeans are part of the Aale-e-Ibrahimi (family of Hazrath Ibrahim SW) & part of the Caucasoid race (the Muslims are mostly melanochroid with some xanthochroid folk in Turkey, Syria, Kurdistan, Balkans etc.) The idea is to advance inner & outer beauty through loving kindness.
2. The infighting between Israelis & Palestinians is a quarrel between members of the Aale-e-Ibrahimi which grieves the Most High God (Allah SWT).
3. We are not exactly victorious on the Eastern front & would take Israeli/European colonization any day over Hindu/black/brown misguidance. We would like your help & the help of the Jews/Israelis/Christians & Europeans in advancing what is fair & loving everywhere. We are willing to cooperate with you & yours for the sake of what establishing what is fair & good because the lands & existence belongs to the good (nay the best) not to those who were in a land first, second or third.
4. We are losing perhaps because our faith is in need of reform (ijtihad) & this is causing our peoples to not be as white, healthy, wise, prosperous, free etc.

2024.06.10 19:16 Yucky_Moo Seeking Advice: Navigating Ankylosing Spondylitis vs. Long-term Lyme Disease Diagnosis

Hello everyone,
I’m reaching out to see if anyone has had a similar experience to mine and can offer some advice or share their journey. Here’s a bit about my situation:
History of Lyme Disease: I was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2008 after a tick bite and a characteristic bullseye rash.
Current Symptoms: Chronic fatigue, pain, and stiffness in my lower back and hips (worse in the morning or after inactivity), joint pain in neck, knees, and ankles. Feels as though I’m very twisted and uneven. Lots of clicking, popping and grinding in my whole body.
Recent Bloodwork: Four of my IgG bands came back reactive, indicating a past or possibly persistent Lyme infection.
Rheumatologist Diagnosis: My rheumatologist believes I have Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) and wants to start me on Humira (adalimumab).
Concerns: Given my history of Lyme disease and the reactive IgG bands, I’m worried about the potential risks of starting a biologic like Humira if my symptoms might be due to long-term Lyme disease instead of AS.
Similar Experiences: Has anyone else been in a similar situation where they had to distinguish between AS and long-term Lyme disease? How did you navigate this?
Treatment Path: If you’ve been diagnosed with both or had to rule one out, what steps did you take? Did you consult with both a rheumatologist and an infectious disease specialist?
Humira and Lyme: For those with a history of Lyme disease, has anyone started on biologics like Humira? What was your experience, and did it affect your Lyme symptoms?
Advice: Any advice on how to approach my doctors with these concerns? What specific tests or evaluations should I request to ensure a thorough diagnosis?
I’m currently gathering information and considering a second opinion. I want to ensure I’m making the best decision for my health without exacerbating any potential underlying infections.
I appreciate any insights, experiences, or advice you can offer. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond!

2024.06.10 19:15 skateastrophy Clarification from MOHELA on July Admin Forbearance

There were like 50 threads in the last week addressing the July 1-31 admin/processing forbearance that many of us were put on. I sent a secure message to MOHELA last week and they responded this AM with this official letter that clarifies much better why the forbearance is happening (SAVE plan recalc) and that YES it does count towards PSLF. Hopefully this saves you all some calls and headaches...
Thank you for contacting MOHELA,
We apologize for any confusion. Federal Student Aid (FSA) has directed MOHELA to place an Administrative Forbearance on the account from 07/01/2024 to 07/31/2024 while we determine if you are eligible for the new benefits under the Saving on A Valuable Education (SAVE) plan.
Starting in July 2024, payments for borrowers with only undergraduate student loans will be cut in half. Monthly payment amounts are currently calculated to be 10% of the borrower’s discretionary income, but in July 2024 that number will drop to only 5% of the borrower’s discretionary income.
If you have a mixture of both undergraduate and graduate loans, you will pay a weighted average of between 5% and 10% of your discretionary income based on the original principal balances of loans taken to attend school.
Please note, if your monthly payment amount can be reduced, you will receive a notice of your new monthly payment amount. If there is no change to your monthly payment amount, your next billing statement will reflect your regular monthly payment amount.
While you are in this forbearance, no payment is required and your interest rate will be set to 0%. This means no interest will accrue while you are in the forbearance. You will also receive credit toward Income Driven Repayment (IDR) forgiveness and Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) for the month(s) covered by the forbearance, assuming all other requirements are met.
If you have any additional questions, please contact us toll free at 888.866.4352. Our hours are Monday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT.
Thank you,
MOHELA

2024.06.10 19:11 EverythingBagelSzn Why is getting tested for RPL so complicated?

I will preface this post by saying that I am not a doctor and I do not work in the medical field, so I could just be ignorant to how medical practices work. However, it feels confusing and frustrating that getting testing for RPL is not more straightforward. I understand getting medical treatment and tested must be expensive, so doctors may not want to test for things that could be unnecessary. However, I would have thought there'd be a list of things to be tested for after having multiple losses. Why does it seem so subjective for doctors to decide what to test for?
For context, I just experienced my second loss. I had to ask more than once for my husband to have a chromosomal screening, and I also had to ask for other tests for myself. However, as my tests are coming back normal, I would have expected almost like a "tier two" of tests, something to the effect of "You were tested for the most common causes of RPL, it all came back normal. Here's the next grouping of less common causes to test for." I would much prefer to be tested for everything from the start, but if expense is a concern, I get it. However, that isn't happening at all. My doctor even named potential causes of miscarriages, but said he doesn't normally test for those because they are "low yield." We are already in the "low" percentile of pregnancies by having multiple miscarriages, we are already defying the odds, so why are we not being tested for the "low yield" causes, especially after the basic work-up of bloodwork is coming back as normal?
Additionally, I am finding folks in this subreddit sharing what you are all being tested for, and each post about tests is so different from one another. I am reading and researching what I should ask for next, yet I know nothing about medicine. I know it is important to not be ignorant with what might be going on with my body, but I would love to be able to trust a doctor to tell me and let me know what I should be tested for, rather than Google for hours and ask for tests. It is clear to me that the tests I am asking for are reasonable requests, considering that after Googling and reading on this subreddit about something I have not been tested for yet, my doctor is willing to give me a script for that test without blinking an eye. Why is this process not standardized? It is already emotionally exhausting and stressful without trying to become a Google expert on the potential causes and bloodwork requests.
I just had to rant, I would love to know anyone else's thoughts on this. And like I said, I do not work in medicine, so I may just be very ignorant as to how this process should be.

2024.06.10 19:09 yunghegemony Vestibular Neuritis: Full symptoms suddenly return to full intensity SEVEN WEEKS LATER? Could it be migraine worsened by steroids or VRT?

👋 Hi there
As in the title. Suddenly had some vertigo (rocking swaying feeling constantly), with brain fog, imbalance etc. almost 7 weeks ago. After 3.5 weeks with no progress from GPs, I saw an ENT (very expensive where I am - but very good).
They found nystagmus, slight hearing loss in my right ear, and veering to the right during tests, some other cool ENT detective skills indicated right ear Vestibular Neuritis. Yay! I have a diagnosis! And it'll take a few months to heal but I'll be OK 👼 👼 👼 👼 👼 👼👌
Oh you naiive son of a bitch...
I took 30mg Prednisolone for a week. While on steroids, my symptoms significantly improved, but worsened slightly after stopping (still about 60% better). I’ve been doing Vestibular Rehab with a holistic approach (acupuncture, massage, physio, spas etc) and both vestibular and usual exercises daily since then.
My ENT thinks there may be a migraine component because of the lingering effects, and I’m reading "Victory Over Vestibular Migraine" at his suggestion. Fun times.
Anyway, last week, after discussing with my ENT whether I might see an improvement with a second course of steroids, I started a second course of steroids which was basically at my own request (30mg Prednisolone daily), but my symptoms have SUDDENLY reverted to the initial intensity. Literally 7 weeks later. Like full on vertigo, rocking constantly, brain fog, the whole shebang! I'm trying to maintain a good attitude knowing that stress / PPPD / migraine etc are all a bit sort of muddled up, but I'm obviously terrified that I'm back in the trenches with this and have to start again. What the actual fuck is going on? Is it the 'roids? Or am I having a flare up? Vestibular Neuritis basically heals with time right so why would I suddenly feel worse? Especially when I'm doing all I can to be kind to myself and get through this all. And especially when the steroids worked so well the first time?
I know no one here can tell me to stop taking steroids and this is a discussion for me and my ENT, but does anyone have practical insights into why this might be happening? Do steroids like, attack the nerve or something and it's normal for me to feel dizzy again? It doesn’t seem stress-triggered, and it feels strange to be back at square one so suddenly.
One thing I did note is that in Victory Over Vestibular Migraine, Beh does mention Valium can slow recovery and cause problems.
But, before reading this, I had been very sneaky and sort of using some old Valium that I had stored years ago for flying as a bit of a crutch over the last couple of months when I was feeling wobbly (at very low doses ~1.25mg - 2.5mg). Am I being paranoid in thinking this could have goofed my brain up and made me a Dizzy Person for a lot longer?
Any similar experiences / anecdotes / reassurances would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much in advance!
Please don't scare me by saying you had the exact same experience and now you're into your 10th year of this or I will cry, thank you.
P.S Just as an additional note if it's helpful -- I did do some more intense VRT exercises yesterday that definitely could have contributed. In fact, for the first time after doing VRT I actually genuinely felt dizzy (which as I understand is the aim?). Perhaps getting worse before getting better? Just in case anyone's had this experience with doing vestibular rehab exercises.
Thank you for reading my novel!

2024.06.10 19:07 No-Expression6414 Unemployed over summer

Long story short, I'm an MA arts student at a lower ranked university that provides 2 paydays per year of $10000, one Jan, one July. I have not been able to find paid work in this crazy economy after 4 months of constant applications. I have never not been able to find work, especially not with my degree and usually I do tutoring, but this summer market is brutal. I rent in a torn up dangerous neighborhood to save, due the first of July, my financial aid doesn't come until the 27th of July. I'm down to eating nothing but 1 cup of daily rice, trying for snap approval. I got an unpaid internship today but my bus pass was turned off for the summer. I have no credit, no family, 2000 mi away from friends, financial aid and housing services do absolutely nothing, both of the hostel jobs are max capacity, and DC renters assistance was recently shut down.
Any leads for student friendly emergency loans? High interest is not a concern. Thanks!
Edit: second round job interview today. hopefully this will turn into a question of using an offer letter as an advance.

2024.06.10 19:03 Spiritual_Chest9103 Workplace lawyer - deleted vacation - medical condition

Got a good one and need some general advice and legal course. I know work shouldn’t take your life. I’m here to ask legally what things I can pursue.
20 yr employee at tech company. Received additional week vacations part of salary negotiation exercised by manager on behalf of HR but was not part of their vacation system. At the time 2 weeks was standard for the first 10 yrs and then it went to 3 weeks.
As soon as I got a new manager, my 3rd week of vacation went away and I even lost the 2 weeks of vacation due to project demands (early in career and just wanted to prove myself and didn’t want to create conflict). Somewhere around year 10 when I got my 3rd week of vacation the comapny put in a policy where all employees from day 1 to year 10 got 3 weeks of vacation.
A co-worker also negotiated for an additional week and pushed for them to add it into the system when the 3rd week was added so she ended up with 4 weeks.
Fast forward nearly 20 managers and 20 yrs. Still have contact with first manager and HR if needed. Company is Cali based but work for different location in the US.
Reasons-After working crazy hours and demands developed health related issues. Took 6 months short term disability and basically hit it hard when I came back and took only a few days off for the next 1.5 yrs. Took 5 weeks vacation on paper but worked it. Current management said I could keep it off the books and use it later. The added vacation would allow me to carry additional weeks of vacation (1.5 x vacation limit). Backup for when / if additional episodes occur with health.
Do you think it is possible to add an additional week of vacation at this point? What would be needed to make this happen? Would back pay be part of the consideration? What steps should I take with employer before contacting HR? Should I hire a workplace lawyer and get a certified letter from first manager? What thing have I not considered? Should I just push for additional accommodations and take a breather?

2024.06.10 19:03 bestchange_pr Mike Belshe: Our macroeconomic climate continues to support the thesis about the need for Bitcoin

By the end of this year, the price of the first crypto coin could reach the range of $125,000-$135,000. This is the opinion of BitGo CEO Mike Belshe. According to him, one of the prerequisites for the growth of BTC will be the high level of US government debt.
According to Belshe, our macroeconomic climate continues to support the case for Bitcoin. He says that there is no doubt that the US national debt is not under control. This situation contributes to the idea that Bitcoin is a new generation of gold Belshe noted.
The expert also expressed the opinion that the US dollar is becoming weaker as a world reserve currency due to the foreign policy of the American authorities. According to Belshe, the country uses the national currency as a weapon and a tool for manipulation.
The CEO of BitGo noted that he does not approve, but does not protest against economic sanctions. However, the example with Russia shows other states that the American authorities can treat them in the same way.
Belshe elaborates on the macroeconomic backdrop, emphasizing that the US’s foreign policy and sanctions controls are driving global entities to seek alternatives to the dollar. He mentions that the BRICS nations are working on alternative payment systems, which could diminish the dollar’s dominance. Additionally, digital technologies are enabling seamless cross-border payments, further eroding the need for traditional financial intermediaries/
Amid a bull market, the value of the major digital currency will form a top at some point in the last quarter of this year. This conclusion was made by Bitfinex analysts.
“Past data suggests that Bitcoin typically reaches a new ATH several months after the halving,” the experts noted.
They also pointed to the continued possibility of BTC growth in the near term.
“Market cap/realized value (MVRV) ratio indicate significant unrealized profit, with the current MVRV value around 2.56. Historically, Bitcoin market tops occur when the MVRV ratio exceeds 3.2,” Bitfinex said.
Analysts believe that the main cryptocurrency could reach $120,000. To justify their forecast, they turned to on-chain metrics and patterns. But experts consider higher estimates to be “overstated.”

2024.06.10 18:59 oh-syz cat fiasco and feeling horrible after breakup

short version: I need some advice. Currently uncoupling from a 3-yr relationship with a pwbpd. For complicated reasons, they have my family cat living at their apartment. My family and I are trying to get the cat back, but I feel horrible about it because I know the pwbpd got attached to the cat and rely on it for emotional support. But I also don’t feel like they can take care of the cat well: I’ve seen them hit and yell at her, their apartment often is unclean with the litterbox/dishes being left dirty for weeks, they have no financial security. What do I do? Do I be the bad guy and take the cat for the animal’s sake (also I miss my kitty)? Or is that being selfish, do I cut my losses and explain to my family that they are keeping the cat?
long version (so many details…): My ex with bpd was my best friend throughout most of college. We started dating my freshman year and split my senior year. The first two years or so went fine, but there were multiple red flags I ignored in my naivety. So many examples… for one, they kept redefining the relationship between queer platonic partners and romantic because they “weren’t sure if they could love.” There was a lot of me caretaking for them, and if I asked them to do anything it would turn into a big argument about how I don’t understand their depression. I did way too much for them financially, which they asked me for, but I should have set better boundaries. They really wanted to be poly which I consented to, expecting communication, but there was a lot of weirdness with that I won’t go into here. Flash forward to summer 2023, things are going better than I ever thought. It feels like they are taking care of themselves, communicating, and working on healing. Around this time is where they found out about bpd and we’d talk about how this is something that fits some of their behaviors. I’m feeling really hopeful for the future. So, when my mom needed a new place for the family cat, we seemed like a good option. The deal was: the cat would stay with us as a couple, with my mom and family being able to visit the cat. We weren’t living together, but we planned to in the future. Due to my apartment being very anti-cat, the agreement was the cat would stay at their apt until we finished school and moved in together.
At their apt I continued doing a lot of caretaking for both them and the cat. Then, early fall, they find another partner (one of my friends) that they are interested in. They tell me they want to date this person and I say fine, but then the discard happens. The pwbpd doesn’t talk to me for two weeks, tells me not to contact them, while also still saying we are partners and best friends? When I confront them about how this isn’t how you treat someone you care about, they say they’re “still new to the poly thing” and I should be patient. Around this time is when we take a step back and say we’ll be best friends/queer platonic, not romantic.
The next few months are crazy. We sign a lease together, because they still want to live with me and promise they’ll work on things (I really wish I had critically thought about this decision, but at this point I am on survival mode: doing whatever to please them and breaking down at home). I also have a cancer scare at this time (a real one, with a biopsy and everything, unlike some others you may have heard of) and my pwbpd does nothing to support me, all the while complaining that I “never support them,” despite the many long nights and phone calls about their problems… There’s so many double standards here. They want me to be there 24/7 for them but turn away when I’m breaking down over medical bills. Meanwhile they’re doting on their new partner. I’m also doing so much emotional effort for the other relationship: consoling my ex about what the other person said, explaining what to do, etc while anytime I bring up issues with our OWN relationship it gets dismissed with an “I’ll work on it, stop bothering me, stop obsessing over it” etc. Also at the time there’s some issues with them sexually pressuring me into things (again, I should have set better boundaries early on) and big fights over small things during key deadlines of mine or just every night, but you’re all familiar with those stories. I do ask about me keeping the cat here and they say yes, however they rescind this later because apparently me asking was “manipulation and holding the cat over their head.”
So, we end the relationship in early winter, saying we will try to be friends and still live together. This goes fine for a couple months… until I start dating someone new. Then the floodgates open. They treat me in public with the toxicity I used to only see at home. Mutual friends ask me why they are treating me like that, why do I take it. My phone is full of messages about how horrible I am, how could I lie and say I loved them, and how they’re full of sexual frustration and its MY fault (??? supposedly because they found out I am having sex with my new partner).
I try to be patient, I try to communicate because I really do care for them and wanted to be friends. But nothing works. I have to fight to see the cat and am only able to see her 1-2x a month. Meanwhile the messages and verbal toxicity continues.
Flash forward last month. I’m sick of it and meet them about breaking the lease. It goes fine until it gets to the cat. I mention it’s my mom’s cat and she wants it back because things didn’t work out between us. They blow up. They say I am just trying to “take everything from them, break their heart one last time.” I get emotional here too and break down and said I really do care and I’m not trying to hurt them, but I miss my cat and she belongs to my mom. It turns into a fight about how I “replaced” them with my new partner. I foolishly try to argue otherwise and in the process say some mean things I regret about how they can’t take care of the cat or themselves, pointing out the state of the apartment. (Arguably true but still rude of me.)
Now later this week, my mom and I are supposed to get the cat from their apartment. But they are suddenly radio silent, not confirming plans or communicating anymore about cat pick-up. I do get some offshoot messages about how terrible of a person I am for doing this. And I do feel terrible splitting someone from their animal. But either way, someone is going to miss the cat and she belongs in my family. But my ex said all these things like “I cared for her for like a year!” that get to my head. I rationalize that the pwbpd can’t properly take care of the cat anyway. They have no job rn and afaik have not applied anywhere. (They also refuse to work food or customer service as those jobs “don’t work for them”) But I’m so tired and so scared for one last fight about the cat. I’m worried what happens if they don’t let me in the apt. In all this mess I’m considering letting them keep the cat. They are a broken person and I don’t want to take something away that gives them comfort. But again, they don’t take care of it… I thought getting the cat back was the right decision, but why does it feel awful?

2024.06.10 18:51 larosajon1 Feedback and critiques on my current list of homebrew rules

A lot of these house rules I got from other people, or are variant rules in the DMG, or are inspired by other games like Darkest Dungeon. I want to run a gritty but also fun campaign for my players. Before I send them the list of house rules, I wanted to get some feedback from the community on it. Thank you!
House Rules v. 1.3

All of the following rules are optional. If there's a player who does not like any or all of the rules, please let me know and I'd be happy to talk about either changes or the removal of the rule(s). I'm open to continual feedback on these rules so they can be modified or removed at any point during the campaign.

~Starting & Max Level~

Your character has already passed many trials and is an experienced adventurer. Your starting level will be 3. The maximum level a player character can reach is level 11. Any time you would gain a level after level 11, you instead can choose between an ability score increase (ASI) or taking a Feat.

~7th Ability Score: Resolve~

There is a 7th ability score other than the standard six of Strength (STR), Dexterity (DEX), Constitution (CON), Intelligence (INT), Wisdom (WIS), Charisma (CHA). The 7th ability score is called Resolve (RES) and it represents a character's ability to resist stress and prevent madness.

~Superior Starting Ability Score Array~

All characters start with the following 7 ability scores:

17, 15, 13, 12, 11, 10, 8

Assign each ability score to 1 of the 7 abilities.

~Floating Ability Score Bonus~

During character creation, you may take 1 point from any racial ability score bonus granted to your ability scores, and move it to any other ability score which does not already gain a bonus from your race.

Example: If you are playing a Wood Elf, your racial ability score bonus is +2 DEX and +1 WIS. You may take the point from WIS and put it in any other ability score, except DEX, or you may take 1 of the points from DEX, and move it to any other ability score except WIS.

~Recent Visit to Town~

Your character is an experienced adventurer who has already faced and passed trials. During their travels they have earned an amount of gold equal to your starting gold * (1 + 1d10) . You can spend this gold on any item that is available in the player’s handbook as if you had just visited a well-stocked and supplied town. You can also sell any of your starting equipment and choose to replace it with something else. Please see the Player’s Handbook for buying/selling prices. Assume no haggling was done. You’ll want to ensure you have enough rations to survive while also not being over encumbered.

~Rations and Exhaustion~

Each character must consume 1 ration during each short or long rest. If a character does not consume a ration during a long rest, they must make a DC 15 CON saving throw at the end of the rest. On a failed save, the character gains one level of exhaustion. For each subsequent day without consuming food and water, the DC of the CON saving throw increases by +5. If a character finishes a long rest without consuming food and water, they cannot reduce their exhaustion level as they normally would.

~Variant: Encumbrance~

If your carry weight is in excess of 5 times your STR score, you are encumbered, which means your speed drops by 10 feet.

If your carry weight in excess of 10 times your STR score, up to your maximum carrying capacity, you are instead heavily encumbered, which means your speed drops by 20 feet and you have disadvantage on ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws that use STR, DEX, or CON.

~Better Intelligence~

You may choose an additional known language, skill proficiency, or tool proficiency for each point you have in your INT ability score modifier. If you choose a skill that you are already proficient in, you instead gain expertise in that skill.

Example: If your INT score is 16, then your INT ability score modifier is +3. You can choose three options like learning an additional language, and having two additional skill proficiencies.

~Take Half HP~

During a level up, instead of rolling your class hit die to determine the amount your maximum HP pool is increased by, take the average of the dice roll rounded up, plus your CON modifier.

d6 = 4 d8 = 5 d10 = 6 d12 = 7

~Party Bonds & Relationship~

During character creation, you and at least one other player, who will be joining that campaign, must make a bond that previously existed joining those two characters in some sort of way. A character can have multiple bonds with multiple characters, and this is often necessary to bring the party together in some way, but no one can be left out of the loop. Every party member must have some sort of knowledge of at least one of the others. In addition, the feelings which form this bond cannot be of animosity (no mortal enemies sworn to destroy each other. No intentions to betray or backstab each other).

Examples: Parent/child, spouses, siblings (adopted or otherwise), acquaintances, neighbors, battle brothers/sisters, mentomentee, saved one or each other’s life, former rivals, partners in crime, etc..

~"I Know a Guy" aka the "Lando" Rule~

When facing a difficult problem, a Player Character (PC) can declare, "Well, I know a guy...," and invent a helpful NPC whom the PCs can visit for aid in their current situation. The PC must work with the DM to provide a quick summary of their history and relationship. Fewer details are usually better to leave room for creative play.
When the PCs try to interact with the NPC, the player who created that NPC makes a CHA check to see how the NPC reacts (either positively or negatively). A PC may use this ability a number of times equal to their INT or CHA modifier (minimum once).

Stipulation: The characters cannot make the NPC appear out of thin air. The player and the DM must work together to ensure the NPC can be visited when it is realistic to do so (e.g., not in the middle of a dungeon in the middle of nowhere). The NPC should be in a location where it makes sense for them to be found, based on the campaign setting and current circumstances.

~Mortal Wounds~

For each failed Death Saving Throw a Character makes, they also acquire 1 Mortal Wound. Mortal Wounds are not lost or reset upon regaining consciousness. If a character reaches an amount of Mortal Wounds equal to, or greater than 5 + that Character's CON Modifier, that Character dies. A player’s character removes a Mortal Wound after one week of rest and downtime. There may be a way to remove Mortal Wounds that the Player Characters are not yet aware of.

~True Unconsciousness~

When a Death Saving Throw is rolled, the player making the roll must roll it behind the DM's screen, so only that player and the DM can see the result. The player cannot react in a way that indicates if they passed or failed that roll unless that roll has them wake from unconsciousness.

~Alternative Initiative~
Will be using the standard initiative rules for now. Feedback on how long initiative takes may have us use an alternative system.

~Flanking~

A creature gains +2 to attack rolls when its target is threatened by another hostile creature on the opposite side. A creature gains +1 to its Spell Save DC when its target is threatened by another hostile creature on the opposite side. A creature can’t Flank an enemy that it can’t see. A creature also can’t Flank while it is incapacitated.

~Better Critical Hits~

A critical attack roll adds the attack’s maximum damage die instead of rolling an additional die.

Example: If you score a critical with a 2h Great Sword, you deal 2d6+STR Mod+12 instead of 2d6+Str Mod+2d6.

~Better Healing Potions~

When you would normally roll one or more die to restore hit points with a potion, you instead use the highest number possible for each die.

Example: If you use your Action to consume a Potion of Healing, you regain 10 HP instead of rolling 2d4+2.

~Random Proficiency~

Instead of adding a proficiency bonus to an ability check, an attack roll, or saving throw, the character’s player rolls a die. The Proficiency Die table shows which die or dice to roll, as determined by the character’s level.
Whenever a feature, such as the rogue’s Expertise, lets a character double his or her proficiency bonus, the player rolls the character’s proficiency die twice instead of once.

Level Proficiency Bonus Proficiency Die

1st-4th +2 1d4
5th-8th +3 1d6
9th-12th +4 1d8
13th-16th +5 1d10
17th-20th +6 1d12

~Stress~

Each time a Critical Failure (1) is rolled by a character, or a Critical Success (20) is rolled by an enemy that targets a character, each friendly character that is able to perceive the Critical Failure or Critical Success (DM discretion), must make a DC 10 RES Saving Throw. The character who rolled the Critical Failure, or was targeted by the enemy that rolled a Critical Success, must make the Saving Throw attempt and rolls with disadvantage. If the check is passed, nothing happens. If the check is failed, that character accumulates 1 point of stress.

For each point of stress a player has, the following occurs to that player:

⦁ Increase the DC of RES Saving Throws by 1.
⦁ Reduce the value required for a Critical Success by 1. For example, if you have 1 point of stress then you roll a critical success on a 19 or 20.
⦁ Increase the value required for a Critical Failure by 1. For example, if you have 1 point of stress, then you roll a critical failure on a 2 or a 1.

Keep in mind that Critical Failures (1) and Successes (20) only occur for Saving Throws and Attack Rolls, not for Skill Checks.

Each character has a maximum amount of Stress they can accumulate. If a character reaches an amount of Stress equal to 8 + their RES modifier, that character sets their current Stress equal to (8 + your RES modifier - 2) and then that character rolls 1d6 and consults the Affliction/Virtue table.

⦁ A character may remove 1 point of Stress upon completing a Long Rest.
⦁ A character may remove 1 point of Stress when that player rolls a natural 20 on an Attack or a Saving Throw.

Affliction/Virtue Table

1-Your character is incapable of enduring the amount of stress your body is going through and suffers a heart attack, becoming unconscious with 0 HP. During a heart attack, you make Death Saving Throws with disadvantage.
2-Your character suffers an Indefinite Madness. Roll a d100 and have the DM consult the Indefinite Madness Table in the DMG.
3-Your character suffers a Long-Term Madness. Roll a d100 and have the DM consult the Long-Term Madness Table in the DMG.
4-Your character suffers a Short-Term Madness. Roll a d100 and have the DM consult the Short-Term Madness Table in the DMG.
5-Your character's mind has a calming moment of pure stillness in the heat of the fray. Reduce your current stress to be 1 less than the maximum amount of stress you can take.
6.-Your character becomes an inspiring bastion of hope. Reduce your current stress by half, rounding down. Friendly characters, capable of perceiving your virtuous display, may reduce their Stress by 1. Enemy characters capable of perceiving your virtuous display must make a DC 10 RES saving throw.

~Resting Abilities~

In addition to any other benefits obtained from completing a Long or Short Rest, characters may participate in Rest Abilities. Each Rest Ability has a Time Cost (example: [1], [2], or [3]). You can, collectively, as a party, spend up to 5 Rest Points during a Long Rest, or 2 Rest Points during a Short Rest. Each Rest Ability and target(s) must be chosen at the start of the Rest. Each party member must agree on the selections in order for the ability to take effect. Once a Rest ability has been chosen, it cannot be chosen again during the same Rest. Once all choices have been locked in, their effects take place immediately for the full duration of the rest, and for any additional duration stated in the ability itself after the rest is completed.

[2] Double the Guard: Gain advantage on any WIS (Perception) checks and Initiative rolls made until the end of this rest.

[2] Stay On Edge: Increase a player's WIS (Perception) check rolls by the number of Stress Points they have for the next 12 hours. This does not stack with itself.

[1] Weapon Maintenance/Practice: Choose one non-Black Powder weapon to have the following effect: Increase damage by an amount equal to half your Proficiency Modifier (rounded up) for the next 12 hours. This does not stack with itself.

[1] Clean Guns: Choose one Black Powder weapon to have the following effect: Reduce the value required to roll a Critical Success when making ranged attacks by 1 for the next 12 hours. This does not stack with itself.

[1] Gun Maintenance: Choose one Black Powder weapon to have the following effect: Remove a Jam and/or Ignore the next time this weapon would Jam.

[1] Encourage: Reduce one party member's stress by 1.

[1] Grim Thoughts: Increase one party member's stress by 1.

[3] Revel: Reduce every party member's stress by 1. Any party member may choose not to partake.

[2] Gallows Humor: Each party member makes a DC 12 WIS check. The DC is lowered by 1 for each point of stress that player has.

[1] Spell Practice: Increase 1 party member's Spell Save DC by 1 for 12 hours.

[1] Study: Increase 1 party member's INT Ability Score Modifier by 1 for 12 hours (up to a maximum of +5). This does not stack with itself.

[1] Meditate/Pray: Increase 1 party member's WIS Ability Score Modifier by 1 for 12 hours (up to a maximum of +5). This does not stack with itself.

[1] Stretch: Increase 1 party member's DEX Ability Score Modifier by 1 for 12 hours (up to a maximum of +5). This does not stack with itself.

[1] Monologue: Increase 1 party member's CHA Ability Score Modifier by 1 for 12 hours (up to a maximum of +5). This does not stack with itself.

[1] Calisthenics: Increase 1 party member's STR Ability Score Modifier by 1 for 12 hours (up to a maximum of +5). This does not stack with itself.

[1] First Aid: Choose one party member to receive healing. That member regains hit points equal to 1d6 + their CON modifier. This does not stack with itself.

[1] Sharpen Blades: Choose one melee weapon to have the following effect: Increase the weapon’s attack and damage rolls by 1 for the next 12 hours. This does not stack with itself.

[2] Plan and Strategize: Choose one upcoming encounter. Gain advantage on the first attack roll or ability check each party member makes during that encounter. This does not stack with itself.

[2] Share Tales: Each party member makes a DC 10 CHA (Performance) check. For each successful check, reduce that party member's stress by 1. If more than half of the party members succeed, everyone gains inspiration.

[1] Brew Potion: Craft a common healing potion. Requires herbalism kit proficiency and ingredients.

[2] Team Training: The party works together to improve their teamwork. Each party member can add 1d4 to their next attack roll or saving throw. This does not stack with itself.

[3] Check Gear: Each party member checks and adjusts their gear. Everyone gains +1 to their AC for the next 12 hours. This does not stack with itself.

[1] Forage for Food: One party member forages for food and water. Make a DC 15 WIS (Survival) check. On a success, the party gains enough rations and water for the next day, reducing the chance of exhaustion due to lack of food or water.

~Rules for thee but also for me~

All of these modified rules can also apply to NPCs including enemies.

2024.06.10 18:48 apondalifa [RATE ANNOUNCEMENT] 90s Warp Rate

Howdy, indieheads! Welcome to the 90s Warp Rate, the biggest, bleepiest collection of classic electronica this side of the Atlantic! I’m your host, Warp-alifa, and with my ravey co-host u/WaneLietoc, we’ve prepared to bring you the best rave rate of British golden age drum & bass, bleep, and IDM electronic listening music that acid can buy!

Hold on! What’s a rate?

Once a month, this subreddit plays a game called a “rate” where a host (myself and u/WaneLietoc) select a collection of albums (and bonus songs) for everyone to score on a scale of 1-10, with a single 11 & a 0 available as well. Ballots of these scores are submitted, and then over “reveal” weekend, the host(s) take the averages of the songs and eliminate them from worst to best, giving one song out of all the albums the top spot, and declaring the album where that song is from the coveted “rate winner.”
Our sister subreddit popheads has a Guide to Rates Video that can give you a broad overview of rates (please note our reveal process is thread-based instead of video chat rooms). And here's recent examples of a rate announcement and a rate reveal.

Cool! Are there any other rates happening right now?

Yes! The Brazil Classics Rate is currently ongoing, with ballots due June 21st! Check out more info about it here.

Cool! How do I participate in the Warp Rate?

Simply fill out the ballot by the due date and submit it to me through the link below! You may also use the playlists to help you keep track of what and where you’re listening to everything.

1) Who and what is Warp?
There’s a label guide to be written here one day, so we’ll try to keep it short. Warp Records was born in 1989 as something of an evolution of a Sheffield sound that had been developing for 15 prior years as 80s dance/rave scene in Sheffield was finally reaching a place of maturation: DJs displayed a wide knowledge base, mixing older rare groove/funk/disco into new abstract electronic minimalism arriving on import from Detroit & Chicago; sounds that crossed racial divides. Meanwhile, luminaries like Cabaret Voltaire, ABC, the Human League, and Heaven 17, all were Sheffield-based pioneers in electronic pop that also happened to have ties to the FON complex, a place where Rob Gordon was cooking up and devising the “bleep” techno sound. By 1989, an opportunity had presented itself to Gordon, partnering with Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell to found Warp as both a record store and a pioneering label with an MO in exploring emerging homegrown electronic sounds that could tear up a Saturday night in the abandoned warehouses across the Northern UK.
It was almost Warped, but no one could understand it through the phone lines really. Also, Warp could stand for We Are Reasonable People. Cheeky Brits!
2) So What Did Warp’s 90s Look Like? Is there a definitive Warp Sound?
You could broadly characterize Warp’s 90s into 3 distinctive parts:
Needless to say, Warp’s pivot out of singles, towards singular artists on the outside of “scenes” quickly established itself as the flagship electronic independent label of its time, and is still the label where many of today’s most cherished alternative acts call home. In the mainline rate, we’ll focus on the highs of the Blech Era and meet a few of the most legendary acts to ever sport the little purple globe, exploring their most enduring works.

Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album (1997) (WARP 43)

The poster child of IDM (so much so that he derided the term), RDJ has built his legacy on going against every little grain he comes across, passing through techno, acid house, rave, ambient, drum & bass, breakbeat, and everything in between. In the process, he became the court jester of electronic dance, a stinky little ginger prankster with a tank living in a bank vault that happened to be one of the most prolific producers ever pressed to wax, Richard David James has gone by many monikers-- Polygon Window, The Dice Man, Caustic Window, user18081971, Four Tet (rumored), Burial (also rumored)-- yet everyone knows the name Aphex Twin.
No one could keep up with Richard in the 90s, not even his best mate Luke Vibert! His sincere acts of trolling repeatedly manifested itself into compilations of analog electronic listening music that he also reveled in rarely giving easy, definitive answers to. Even if he despised his inadvertent celebrity status, the legend of the 1990s Richard D James was an extravagant, decadent one, whose face sprawled forth from every direction. The self-titled-by-proxy Richard D. James Album, with its menacing grin and simplistic title, is but one of a plethora of AFX projects that could have been chosen for this rate; yet with its childlike sense of wonder and bouncing beats, it’s an easy selection for old fans and newcomers alike.
It may even be his most personal work yet. He’d done a portrait for a cover, left track names as anagrams or references to Cornwall, even brought out a new edition of Calx, but the RDJ album happened to feature one major upgrade for Richard hiding in the reflection of his eye: a computer! That’s right, Richard was making the leap to the digital age for breakbeat innovation. He’d long been an analog purist, but after releasing Squarepusher’s debut Feed Me Weird Things, Richard had a new friend, one who he would be locked in a sonic arms race with for the rest of the decade, and a new direction towards something jungle-adjacent, but manic of its own accord.
Note: we will be using the American CD release for this rate, which included the Girl/Boy EP as an addendum–minus the remixes. This edition is not on normal streaming in full.

Autechre - Tri Repetae (1995) (WARP 38)

This is when we knew it was really on. Gloriously driven by the kick drum swing of hip-hop while also beginning to dissolve in their new acid computer bath, Tri Repetae is the first full album where Sean and Rob let their hearts and brains fully merge with the gear.
-Sasha Frere-Jones, the Shfl’s (very good!) guide to IDM
There’s a joke in the office, that the Autechre duo always say the next album’s going to be ‘much more hiphop’
-Ian Anderson of the Designers Republic (Autechre’s album cover designers)
I thought I might give them boys another go....Would be the third time of trying, if we count the initial back-in-the-day listening. Got rid of nearly all the CDs years ago - where shall I start? Tips, playlists, beginner's guide to , all very much welcomed. Bear in mind, though, my entrenched position is 1/ no grooves 2/ no tunes 3/ no discernible emotions or even moods.... so evidence proffered to the contrary is unlikely to be persuasive... Much more likely to be swayed by extremes of abstraction.... absolute unhuman inhospitable uninhabitable inclemency... the kind of unreachable alienness gestured at in the devastating denouement to Stanislaw Lem's Fiasco...I do remember being quite impressed by Confield, for instance...Did I quite-like Oversteps? Thing is, I can't remember. And that is the main issue, I just find their stuff resolutely evades memory. There's no element in it, on any level, that sticks. I mean, come on. Who hasn't got better things to do than this?
- Simon Reynolds, continuing to be frustrated by Autechre as of October 19, 2023
I remember, like, doing Tri Rep and it was literally like: ‘Right, we’re just going to do loops, and that’s it’. And it’s going to be that, and they’re going to be incrementally changing. And it was very much about it being looped. I was really thinking about that a lot at the time, that I’m going to loop this more than I should, it’s going to go on longer than it should. But it’s going to be just about tolerable, just within the kind of boundary of what’s acceptable in terms of how long things are going on for and how much repetition there is…I mean, basically we still sit in there arsing around with drum machines and keyboards, we’re not doing anything technically amazing and flash. We’re just REALLY into it.”
- Sean Booth, keeping his feet on the ground in an Interview with Droid (2023) + for Rob Young’s Warp: Labels Unlimited (2006)
By 1995 Autechre wanted out of the industry; they were shit at signing CDs and hated doing interviews. The duo had come to Warp with hardcore electro cuts in ‘91 that were passed on, returning months later with tracks “a bit like LFO but they’ve got better beats”. Warp was amused, edging one cut after another out of them until debut Incunabula was curated as a result. Amber took things in a more decidedly ambient exploration, but neither release quite reflected the promise "The Egg" on the Artificial Intelligence compilation, "Basscadet" on Incunabula, nor the Garbage EP were trafficking in. Tri Repetae was to be their escape vessel.
Very few musicians from the last century were ever able to build the type of devoted cult following that the Manchester-based duo of Sean Booth and Rob Brown have accumulated over 30 years; even fewer have done so while consistently scouting the deepest regions of dance music until it was rendered into some kind of jam-based synthetic utopia. Tri Repetae, their third full-length album from Warp, locates the pair at a pivotal moment in their development. One where the technology was finally at the point Autechre’s love of Street Sounds electro could be hyper-charged while also still playing to a composeNew Music bent the duo was seeing themselves in a lineage belonging to.
It’s straight up an album of loops, ones fully grown into cool, synthetic worlds. It is hip hop but in a way that is beyond the after-image of a break-dancer, an actual moving 'n' grooving human, toeing the line between human and machine, and pushing electronica into a new era of methodical mechanics and pulsing glitch textures. It sounds like music Wall-E and EVE have RAD sex to. It is 70 minutes and Autechre politely requests you listen to it on analog vinyl (the cassette is disposable information & the CD is incomplete without surface noise) AND in the dark; if applicable.
NOTE: this album is a real bizarre one. If the quoteboard makes anything clear, there is SOMETHING to this release, but also it may sound like a brick to you. Deadass. Play around with it. Have fun. Don’t remain motionless!

Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children (1998) (WARP 55)

We grew up in the 70s, a time of great paranoia about science, a paranoia which comes across in the science fiction of that era, in books as well as films. It’s this paranoia, this pessimism, this fear of science, which can be found in our music along with other influences. When we were growing up in the 70s, the view of the future shown in TV and films was very dark, very powerful.
After hearing a tape of their work. Sean Booth of Autechre hipped Warp to a pair of enigmatic, nostalgic, brothers, Michael Sanderson and Marcus Eoin. The duo had been working south of Edinburgh in part of a free ranging collective of artist friends since the 80s, Hexagon Sun, that was holding outdoor music and art events. Proto-Boards of Canada music, alongside children’s song records and tapes mixed and reversed over the top were in the mix, complete with kaleidoscopic imagery. But such events had slowed over the 90s as the collective dwindled and insularity became key to the brothers’ work for the Skam label.
With their ARG-album announcements, hidden occult messages, and exquisite production, it’s no wonder why BoC have developed such a rabid following, and an even wider scope of influence in the decades since. The recurring themes of nature and man, memory and nostalgia, wonder and fear of the unknown, all accumulate seamlessly on their Warp debut, Music Has the Right to Children. Flipping fluidly between slinky downtempo and wobbling ambient, while always keeping an underlying adoration to 90s boom bap hip-hop instrumentals, this turquoise-tinted record was another zap from where 90s music was zipping towards. To say it has wowed and inspired generations of listeners would be an understatement, as much as it has become something of a sacred text… an essential bliss out.
Note: we will be using the original UK release for this rate, which did not include the track “Happy Cycling” as found on streaming now.

Squarepusher - Hard Normal Daddy (1997) (WARP 50)

Indeed there have been questions about an act in which Warp is currently investing its future; solo performer Squarepusher, described respectfully as “Weather Report on 78”... Going between us, from 95-97, was really like a conversation. It wasn't like we were trying to better each other; or at least if it was we never came out in the open about it. We were just like, ‘Oh yeah man, that’s wicked’, and then turn up the next week with a DAT: ‘Check this out’. But it was brilliant.
- Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher) on his friendship with Richard D James during 1995-1997
Tom Jenkinson’s discography is an eclectic, mind-twisting journey through the heart and soul of frantically rhythmic dance music. Spanning almost 30 years, the Squarepusher moniker has explored everything from acid and drill, jungle and techno, hard breaks and flash-- all while maintaining a distinctly human touch to the easier-said-than-done prospect of making drums go “brrrr.” All the while, he’s eschewed a scene or collective. “The idea of being part of a movement isn’t particularly exciting to me, unfortunately,” he said back in 1998.
But before all that, Tom just wanted to release a purple sleeve on Warp. He was a raver that knew his jungle breaks and was cooking up tunes back in the 92-93 heyday when he was 17. He was well on his way to a purple sleeve by 1995, when RDJ helped him curate dozens of cuts into Feed Me Weird Things, a harmonious blending of melodic hooks with technical bravado, for Rephelx. It would kick off the great Squarepusher v Aphex Twin (v Autechre) “make the freakiest shit you can” arms race of the late 90s. The RDJ album fired back at the speed Squarepusher pushed. Chiastic Slide offered an alternate freak mode glitch hop swing. Hard Normal Daddy, Jenkinson’s debut LP on Warp in the spring of ‘97 and hot off the heels of the singularly brilliant purple sleeve Port Rhombus EP, may have been the real achievement of Warp’s 90s run.
Armed with a fake Fender Jazz bass and a “totally outdated” Akai S950 sampler, Jenkinson aimed for something singular. Both a love letter to his local rave scene, as much as an attempt to perfect and enshrine his Weather Report jazz fusion worship into the hardcore continuum, Hard Normal Daddy carries a sense of personalization akin to a bildungsroman. This is Squarepusher the Underdog cementing his own wicked legacy as yet another progressive pioneer in the landscape of alternative electronica.

Bonus Rate (Optional)

Warp had over 71 albums and 128 singles released across 1989-1999. We could be here for DAYS rating cuts! So, we came up with something reasonable. Our bonus rate includes an absolute bevy of Warp classics, examining the varied eras and aesthetics. From the heaviest of dance tunes to the most blissful of comedown tracks fit for a spliff. Oh, and wicked spins on kitschy rave! Want to float peacefully around the orbital space station? Or dive into the deep end of bleep techno? This bonus rate has a little something for everyone, and perhaps a new obsession or two to follow.

2024.06.10 18:48 larosajon1 Feedback and critiques on my current list of homebrew rules

During a level up, instead of rolling your class hit die to determine the amount your maximum HP pool is increased by, take the average of the dice roll rounded up, plus your CON modifier.

d6 = 4 d8 = 5 d10 = 6 d12 = 7

We will be using the standard initiative rules for now.

For each point of stress a character has, the following occurs to that character:

Raytech — Olympus Campus, Mars

POV: Eupprio, Malgeir (Executive)
Eupprio and Fleguipu looked at the shuttle bay external doors with anxiety as the siren light next to it flashed a menacing red. The shrill wail of an alarm pierced the air, slowly getting louder.
“What’s that—”
“Airlock,” Aida answered casually. “We’re just waiting for it to pressurize outside.”
Eupprio’s brows furrowed in confusion. “Pressurize? Isn’t this an inhabited planet?”
“Yeah, no breathable atmosphere for us outside though.”
“Will we need to put on suits?”
“Nah, Olympus is domed once we go underground. Only the launch and landing pads in the spaceport are outside,” Aida said, nodding towards the exterior cameras. They displayed the shuttle’s further descent into the landing pad, gradually unveiling an expansive underground chamber.
“Domed?”
“Yeah, like they’ve got a big artificial dome of air… You guys don’t have domed habitats?”
“We have infrastructure in space… but why go through the expense of building a colony on a non-atmospheric planet?”
“There is atmosphere here; it’s just too thin to breathe. If you go outside without a helmet, you’ll lose consciousness in thirty seconds.”
“So why build a colony here? And a whole city too!” Eupprio asked, voice tinged with bewilderment.
“You have to remember: we don’t have dozens of systems like you,” Aida explained. “We’ve got a single habitable planet in between the billions of people in our species. Everyone else gets to live with recycled air and water.”
“That sounds… dreadful,” Fleguipu sniffed, her nose wrinkling slightly.
“It’s not too bad. I lived on one station or another in the Red Zone for a few years. You get used to it. Mars, though, this is actually prime real estate.”
“Not Terra?” Eupprio questioned. “Surely that’s your most habitable planet.”
“Terra is the most habitable,” Aida conceded. “But not the richest. Think about it: it’s expensive to climb out of Mother Terra’s gravity well. So who can afford to come here? Only the wealthiest Terrans or those with the most desirable skills. And Mars just happens to be the furthest you can go without really worrying about security like you would on Ganymede, Titan, or any of the Jovian or Saturnian moons. The shipyard workers on Ceres get paid a lot too, but that’s new money; Mars is where the old money goes. For that reason, Olympus has the highest real estate prices in Sol other than a few small patches of Luna, and Olympus University is the most prestigious school in the Republic.”
“I see,” Eupprio nodded, the gesture more an acknowledgement of the unintuitive Terran logic than true comprehension. “Is that why we are meeting this Martina Wright here? She is rich?”
Aida nodded in confirmation. “Yup. Her company Raytech is, at least. Largest defense contractor in the Republic. They build everything from warships and luxury cruise liners to small arms and computer tablets.”
“That makes sense.”
“Aren’t you in that business too? Most of the alien clients we’ve shuttled so far are executives for companies building some Malgeir-Terran ship integration or brainiacs who know a lot about science stuff. No offense, but judging by your name and demeanor, you seem a lot more like the former than the latter.”
“None taken,” Eupprio said, smiling. “We were actually mostly in the finances business, but we’re making a pivot to move into defense as well recently.”
“Ah, smelling the credits from the war?” Aida matched her smile cynically. “I don’t blame you.”
“Defense is not in our company’s genetics, but we acquired a major radar manufacturer to get caught up. And we have… certain advantages.”
“Coy too, huh? Alright, keep your secrets,” Aida remarked, just as the siren lights ceased their dancing and the alarm fell silent. “Ah, looks like it’s pressurized. We are good to go. Next stop, Raytech campus. It’s beautiful. There’s this line of implanted cherry trees in front, you’ll see…”

POV: Martina Wright, Terran (Executive)
Martina’s office shimmered in the soft glow of its ambient lighting.
She smiled as the duo of aliens entered her office, mustering all her decades of experience in decorum to refrain from treating them in her head as anything— anyone other than regular new clients.
The silver furred one, the leader apparently, walked up to her, reached out her paw, and gave her a perfectly serviceable handshake: firm and brief. She spoke in fluent English through her translator, “Hello, Martina. I am Eupprio. It is a pleasure to meet you.”
Eupprio, CEO of Eupprio Tech, her implant reminded her. Age 29. Silver fur likely dyed or genetically modified. Estimated 1.45 meters, 15 Martian kilograms.
“Welcome to Mars, Eupprio and Fleguipu,” she declared. “I will be your host while you are in Sol… if there’s anything about your stay here that you are dissatisfied about, please let me know.”
Eupprio raised her snout, looking out her window at the sprawling Raytech campus beneath them. “Everything has been ideal so far. The beauty of your campus is unparalleled. I have never seen anything quite like it, especially built on a non-habitable planet.”
There are no known Malgeir colonies on non-habitable planets, so don’t get too—
“Thank you, Eupprio. Please, take a seat,” she gestured towards the twin couches in her office. “I’ve had one of these ordered, tailored to your… ergonomic specifications.”
Eupprio and Fleguipu settled onto the couches, the former letting out a low, satisfied rumble at the comfort. “Much better than a Navy shuttle jump seat, that’s for sure.”
You should ask her what’s wrong with our SC-30 shuttle seat—
Martina chuckled, easing herself into her chair with a practiced grace. “Actually, we make those shuttle seats too. The discomfort is a… compromise for other features the Navy requires, though we are now experimenting with Malgeir variants that may be slightly more comfortable for someone with your physique. Anyway, please, tell me… how was your trip here? Any trouble on the way?”
“Oh, not much,” Eupprio replied with a dismissive flick of her ear. “Just a mild piracy scare near the Saturn Red Zone.”
“Ah, yes, we get a few of those. I’ll make sure your shuttle takes a detour far away from it on your way out, even if it—” Martina closely observed the aliens’ faces with her limited knowledge of Malgeir body language.
Eupprio shook her ears dismissively. “No, that’s fine. We enjoyed the view, and I’m confident in your people’s skills.”
Martina nodded, in a gesture of mutual respect. “As we are confident in yours.”
“We did see something on our way up to your office though,” Eupprio commented, fishing for information. “There was a large hole in the ground in your campus. It seemed like an active excavation—”
“Ah yes. That’s a new underground building site for Project Panoptes… Actually, it is tangentially related to your sensor upgrade project.”
“Panoptes? I’m unfamiliar with the word…”
“It’s an ancient Terran word, meaning all-seeing eyes,” Martina replied with casual pride. “How much do you know about our ships’ situational awareness systems?”
“Not much, just that it’s more advanced than ours.”
Martina nodded. “Every warship, Terran or Malgeir, carries a combination of sensors: proximity, visual, infrared, thermal, radar, gravidar, et cetera. Each of them gets fed into the ship’s computers, which fuses the information it gets from each of them into a singular picture available for its commanders. For detecting most ships, this sensor fusion task is trivial. But against ships designed for low observability, it becomes a much more complex problem. There is way more ambiguity and you need to combine data from multiple sources for better detection: a smudge on a long-distance telescope, a radar ping from a patrol boat, slightly elevated telemetry from a listening satellite, all of it comes together to give us a better picture of the battlefield of the future.”
Eupprio’s expression tightened. “But stealth ships… our enemies don’t have those kinds of ships… do they?”
“Not yet. But they might eventually start building them. And increasingly, some of the pirates in our own system are getting their hands on such systems. We expect stealth proliferation in the Red Zone to be a big problem in the next couple decades.”
“I see.”
“Panoptes allows us to read information off the millions of sensors we have in Sol and beyond, from the nose of our most advanced reconnaissance ships to century-old orbital telescopes in Terra orbit. Every single pixel of camera footage, every radar bounce is read and processed, compared against recorded orbital data, accounting for light-time delay and even jamming. Errors and data imperfections are then deconflicted and resolved using the largest series of super-intelligence chips ever built for a single purpose. If a bee-sized rock is out of place anywhere in Sol… Panoptes sees all and knows all…”
“Bee?”
“Small Terran animal… about your claw’s size.”
Eupprio’s tongue hung out in astonishment. “That’s… impressive. I assume these facilities house those computers then.”
“Exactly right. Buildings and buildings brimming with advanced neuromorphic computers. They’re not just here on Mars,” Martina gestured vaguely skyward. “They’re mostly on Terra, Luna, and Europa. A few on our ships and stations. That much data takes a lot of computing power to sift through.”
“And when it’s built—”
“When it’s finished and switched on, nothing in Sol will be beyond our reach. Piracy and the Resistance will finally become a problem of the past. People have said for decades that you can’t chase a technological solution to this social problem, but…” Martina offered a nonchalant shrug, her eyes twinkling. “Those people also haven’t seen a quettaFLOPS computing network in action either.”
Eupprio looked dazed, her snout open and tongue hanging out.
Next to her, Fleguipu must have sensed that something was significant about the Terrans’ achievements in scaled computing from her friend’s reaction, but she didn’t quite understand: usually, Eupprio handled the technical side of the business. She brought the conversation back to the ground. “That’s um… very impressive. Is the timeline for our project related to the completion of Project Panoptes?”
“Oh, no, not at all,” Martina replied. “The Fifth Fleet sensor upgrade package is ready to be delivered to Malgeiru. Is your team ready to integrate?”
Eupprio came back to Mars and nodded with fervor. “Ah, ahead of schedule. That’s what I like about you Terrans.”
“You haven’t met half of us,” Martina chuckled. “And we still have a lot to go over on the administrative side. Our researchers did some digging into your company, and we noticed that there hasn’t been a lot of mention of your activities in the defense industry before recently—”
“That is correct,” Eupprio replied, unphased. “We are relatively new to the sector. But your research may or may not have covered our recent acquisition of Ciolnoenc Instruments. They are a company specializing in defense electronics and long range optical—”
We have evaluated their acquisition history. Not the most optimal but far from the worst option.
Martina let Eupprio’s monologue wash over her.
“— and as a young, agile company, we are more than ready to listen to the experience of our experts from Ciolnoenc in such a project,” she finished.
“That’s good to hear,” Martina said. “But to be blunt, we didn’t sponsor your company’s entry into the Oathkeeper program because of your new acquisitions. Rather, it is your expertise in other areas that attracts us.”
Eupprio thought quickly on her paws and pivoted like an experienced dancer. “You may think of our main business as financiers. It serves as a base of capital for our purchases, and lubricant for navigating our bureaucracy.”
“Precisely. While some Malgeir manufacturing firms are more technically prepared for a project like this than others, the nature of the… differential in our technology makes that hard to quantify positively. For example, are you familiar with the general principle behind our gravidars?”
Eupprio shook her head honestly. “No, I am only aware it is several generations upgraded from our radar. I assume it operates on some gravitic principle?”
“Actually, it does not, but that was what we wanted people to think. As some of our people have guessed, what it relies on is not gravitational waves, which travel at light speed, but rather FTL principles. Which is why gravidar systems are deeply integrated into our blink drives. This is relevant because your drives are mostly compatible with ours, except they take up a large volume of your ships because your ships are bigger: bigger ships, more mass, bigger blink drive.”
“I see. Are you implying we should have bought a drive company instead of a sensor company?” Eupprio asked.
“No. We are saying there was no way you could have known, and none of the other Malgeir firms that are bidding on Republic contracts know what they are doing either. Your other advantage, however, your capital — your capabilities in navigating Malgeir government and society — those are enduring, and we intend to leverage those.”
Eupprio nodded, a newfound comprehension dawning in her eyes.
Martina continued, “We will… go over how we can best synergize those in more detail in the coming week. But for now, we have an additional request of a somewhat… time-sensitive nature.”
“Go ahead.”
Martina hesitated, her gaze oscillating between the pair of aliens. “It uh… it might be best if we spoke with you alone on this matter?”
“I trust Fleguipu,” Eupprio declared firmly. “There is nothing about my business she is not also aware of.”
“Very well. I’ll be straightforward. We know you have access to a large number of Malgeir Navy incident reports.”
Eupprio’s eyes momentarily betrayed her surprise before regaining composure. “Is that so? There are many rumors surrounding our company; not all of them are true.”
We are 99.8% certain. We have TRO surveillance from her office and—
“We need a copy of them, and we are willing to pay.”
“Can’t you request of copy from the Defense Ministry given your collaboration with—”
Martina answered, “We can, but it will take time.”
Eupprio nodded thoughtfully. “I see. But if I had them, I would not hand them out for free. How would you price this?”
We are not paying for the value of the reports, but the expediency and avoidance of potential omission. Value calculated… negotiation should end below: 18.3 million Terran credits. Start negotiations with at least 12 million.
“We’ll offer you 18 million Terran credits for the whole cache,” Martina offered unflinchingly. “Final price.”
Eupprio ran through the numbers in her head, factoring in the exchange rate.
“Done,” she said, retrieving her tablet and initiating the file transfer to— “How do I hand these over—”
Martina gestured towards Fleguipu. “Just transfer the files to your friend’s datapad, unencrypted preferably. The sensors in my office will intercept it.”
Eupprio shot her a sharp look, then shrugged and complied. “And how will you deliver payment?” she asked as the file transfer began.
“We can add that as a line item to your sensors upgrade contract: technical support,” Martina suggested. “My assistant will optimize its categorization and depreciation for taxation purposes—”
Eupprio shook her ears in disapproval. “That will not do. Our company is already at the cap of our hundred billion source-sole contracts limit imposed by your Republic’s procurement regulations.”
“Ah.” Martina’s brow furrowed briefly in thought. “There are ways around that too, but we can also deliver equivalent value goods or technology in—”
Eupprio shook her ears again, this time more sharply in refusal. “I want hard credits.”
“I’m sorry?”
“Terran credits,” Eupprio specified. “I want it in the local currency here. Either in a discreet account or physical denominations.”
She does not care about money. She is making a backup plan for if the war goes poorly for the Malgeir, or she wants to deal with Republic entities in less-than-legal situations. Possibly even bribes for acquiring tech samples.
Martina mulled over this for a moment and nodded. “That’s acceptable. I’ll have my assistant get you an account at Sol Bank under a legal pseudonym and credited with the amount. You will have to pay a local income tax on the amount, since it cannot be deducted as a business expense.”
Eupprio’s snout flared slightly. “There is no way around that? Would they even know about…”
“Not easily. And word of advice, you don’t want to mess with the Republic Revenue Service. But we can optimize it: we have a subsidiary office on Titan, which allows remote residence for tax purposes, and if we pay you out at that location, we can optimize your effective rate down to—”
1.95%.
“—about two percent with various tax incentives.”
Eupprio waved her paw casually. “Fine, that’s acceptable.”
Martina nodded as her implant got to work.
Creating account… Crediting… Preparing paperwork… Sending the details to her tablet… Done.
“It’s done.”
“That was quick,” Eupprio commented, a hint of astonishment flickering in her eyes as she saw the alert on her datapad.
“Our computers work fast.”
Wanna see me do it again?

2024.06.10 18:41 Thai_Ventures AMEX FINANCIAL REVIEW POST UPDATE

Was hit with a financial review after telling them I wanted to purchase a $3k plane ticket from Medellin to Bangkok for both my fiance & I. Long story short they initiated a financial review on June 3rd. Requested my pension letter from the VA, 2 months bank statement. I waited up until the 10th of June “today” to see that they finally removed the hold off my Platinum charge card. So it seems everyone has a different and unique situation when it comes to the analysis of there account. I was stressing for those days of waiting but in the end it looks like my paperwork checked out and I can continue with my using my cards.

**Distress Call Transcript -
**Livepod 3, Ryley Robinson to all Alterra personnel:**
This is Livepod 3, Ryley Robinson. I have landed on planet 4546B. I repaired the Aurora's reactor and searched escape pods 17, 3, 2, 12, 13, and 19 for survivors but found none. I tracked a crew from the Degasi to a base 500 meters down, but there were no signs of life.
I witnessed a rescue ship, the Sunbeam, being shot down by an alien station. Upon further investigation, I discovered an energy core. When I attempted to disable it, the station informed me that I am infected with the 'Carar' virus.
My latest findings near escape pod 2 include a small pre-warp operations base I established and two additional alien structures:
  1. A laboratory conducting research on a cure for the Carar virus.
  2. A larger facility in the active lava zone, which I cannot access due to the absence of a blue relic/emblem.
Requesting immediate assistance. Repeat, this is Ryley Robinson of Livepod 3, stranded on planet 4546B. This message will now repeat itself
