I got this error message "enable TPM2.0" and this support helping me to fix it but still same and got banned
when I researched a bit, I found that I should have checked my device for viruses first because it was very likely that my device was compromised or had hacking files. Indeed, I found all of this and deleted them all, but I still didn't receive any help from Valorant support. I was mistakenly banned, and I am not at fault for this ban.
After playing Valorant for 4 years (as a beta player) and spent over $300 on my account, I was mistakenly banned without any reason.

2024.05.15 19:20 Valuable-Career8515 Calls Keep Dropping. (GTA)

I have been with the service for 48 hours and opened a ticket with Fizz regarding the issue but I am dropping calls more than half the of the time I dial out. I have 4 bars so I know reception isnā€™t the issue.
Fizz has asked me to do the following:
I have popped the sim back in and out I have restarted the phone multiple times Reset the network settings on my iPhone twice now Turned off call forwarding
I still can not make a reliable phone call out on my iPhone 11 Pro Max.
Seeing how this number is associated with my business it is really concerning.
Anybody deal with anything similar or have a fix not mentioned above?

First proper attempt at a Hackintosh goes (Mostly) well
After my Tiger Lake laptop suffered some damage on the power connector, I was looking for something which I'd use temporarily, until I get a decent MBP for university, and that's pretty much how I ended up here for less than Ā£600/ā‚¬700/$760.

Specs

  • CPU - Intel Core i7-10610U (vPro Platform)
  • GPU - Intel UHD Graphics 620
  • RAM - 16GB at DDR4-2666
  • Model - HP EliteBook 840 G7
  • Audio Codec - Realtek High Defintition Audio (For ref. I'm using ID 21)
  • WiFI and Bluetooth - Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 and BT 5

What works

  • Hardware acceleration
  • Audio, via built-in speakers
  • Trackpad and keyboard
  • Battery readouts
  • 2 USB-A and 2 USB-C/Thunderbolt (macOS recognises as all Thunderbolt?)
  • WiFi and Bluetooth? (WiFi works, but it's tedious on connecting/BT works to an extent)
  • Volume controls on keyboard

What doesn't work

  • Fingerprint sensor
  • Microphone (uses Intel SST, so that's pretty much gone)
  • S3 Sleep
  • HDMI out
  • RTC clock (Error 005, non-critical, but resets time and date to 00:00 01/02/2019 each reboot)
  • Mouse buttons in between keyboard and trackpad
  • Brightness controls (Although, you can fix that with a custom keyboard shortcut)

What needs more testing

  • Camera
  • Audio, via headphone jack

2024.05.15 19:17 Suchan2435 Best combo of sequences for Lotm pathways.

You have to choose one fix pathway for 9-4(only among Lotm pathway group) but you can choose which ever pathway among door, error, fool for s3,s2,s1 in what ever order you like.
(Ignoring dangers like cw, bethal)
For example:
I think combo of s3 fool, s2 error ,s1 door will be op cause you will get access to s2 decreption with that you can analyse any beyonder powers and copy it by s1 powers of door pathways which increases its effectiveness and with s3 fool you will get access to HV(can obtain more datas of Beyonders powers) With s3 marionette powers,s2 Avatar powers, one can become really op.
It's just a discussion so feel free to share your creative ideas in the comment section.

2024.05.15 18:58 HeadOfSpectre There's An Abyss Even Deeper Than The Mariana Trench

ā€œReady to make history, baby?ā€
I looked over toward Sheila as she stood on the gangplank leading up to The Burger. I still couldnā€™t believe she named our research ship ā€˜The Burgerā€™... emotional relevance be damned.
ā€œIt's not exactly history,ā€ I corrected.
ā€œOh come on! If your survey is right, this trench might run even deeper than the Challenger Deep, and youā€™re gonna be the first person to explore it! How is that not exciting?ā€
ā€œMight be deeper, we only have a limited amount of topological data. And even if it is deeper, weā€™re talking only a few hundred feet at most, itā€™s really not that im-ā€
Sheila silenced me with a kiss.
ā€œNerd.ā€ She teased, and I found myself too flustered to reply. After five years of marriage, she still could leave me speechless with just a kiss. Godā€¦ how did someone like me end up with a woman like that?
Then again, how did someone like me end up where I was in general? It was honestly a little overwhelming. Standing on the dock, getting ready to board that ship and join the ranks of Jacques Piccard and James Cameron (yes, that James Cameron) as one of the few people to take a manned submersible down to the deepest parts of the ocean. And Iā€™d be lying if I said I wasnā€™t a little scared too. Diving down that deep could easily be a one way trip if even the slightest thing went wrong. My submarine would be experiencing between 600 to 1100 atmospheres of pressure and while weā€™d tested it over and over again to make sure it would actually be up for the challenge, there was still a lingering iota of doubt in the back of my mind. All that needed to go wrong was one little thing, and that would be it for me.
The scariest part is that I probably wouldnā€™t even know what had happenedā€¦ Iā€™d simply be goneā€¦ and Sheila would be alone. The thought of that caused a momentary spike of panic in my chest that almost made me want to call this whole thing off.
Almost.
But, then I felt her hand close around mine. I looked up into her bright blue eyes, and saw her gentle smile.
ā€œYouā€™re gonna be okay, hun,ā€ She promised. ā€œYou and your team have been running the numbers, right? Itā€™s gonna go just fine!ā€
I nodded slowly.
ā€œItā€™s gonna go fineā€¦ā€ I repeated, before she leaned in to kiss me, and gently pulled me by the wrist up onto the deck of the Burger.
She was probably right.
It probably would be fine.
Probablyā€¦
The trench Iā€™d be exploring was a fairly recent discovery, located south of Greenland, in a vast stretch of water situated directly between Newfoundland and Iceland. Itā€™d been uncovered during a topological survey in the area, and my team had taken an interest in investigating it further. At minimum, it was believed to descend to about 35,000 feet deep (over 10,000 meters), although the current theory was that it might have run even deeper. Determining the exact depth of the yet unnamed chasm was just one of the intents of our dive. The rest was studying the organisms that might be found down there, and how they might have differed from the ones found in other deep ocean trenches (some variation being expected given the isolated environment they were developing in.)
I had to admit, it would be exciting to see what new life might have developed in a place such as this, especially if it ran even deeper than our predictionsā€¦ and that excitement was enough to make me chase the fear of the risks out of my mind, even if it was only briefly. While Sheila went to make sure we were ready to embark, I caught myself wandering out toward the rear of the ship where my submarine, The Tempura, waited for me. Did this submarine deserve a better name than The Tempura? Probably. But, this was my project, so I got to name it and since Burger was already taken, Tempura was the next best name I had. I liked to think that the subs namesake might approveā€¦ if she hadnā€™t died fifteen years ago. Shrimp donā€™t live very long.
As the ship began to depart, I caught myself reminiscing on how Iā€™d ended up hereā€¦ it really was all because of those damn shrimp, wasnā€™t it? Wellā€¦ maybe not all because of the shrimp. But they were certainly part of it. Back when I was a lot younger, I never really gave much of a shit about anything at all. I guess I did have a thing for the oceanā€¦ the great, romantic vastness of it. The sense of adventure that it beckoned with. The endless mysteries that lay within its dark depths. I used to read about it all the time when I was a kid and I especially loved the classic adventures: Verneā€™s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, and Melvilleā€™s Moby Dickā€¦ but that love was just confined to my books. I didnā€™t really have any interest in actually going out and seeing the ocean. Hell, the idea of going to a beach and standing in the sun with my toes in the sand seemed miserable to me. I was happier (although calling myself happy mightā€™ve been a little disingenuous) alone in my room, enjoying the company of books as opposed to people.
Then came the shrimp.
One of my online friends kept them as a hobby. He used to post pictures of his tanks all the time, and I always thought they looked kinda cool. He said that if I was interested in them, I should try keeping some for myself, and during a particularly bad bout of depression, I figured that maybe it might be worth a shot. So, I bought a cheap tank and some cheap decorations, bought myself some shrimpā€¦ and promptly watched them die over the next few weeks. Thatā€¦ that bothered me. I donā€™t know why butā€¦ it really bothered me. Iā€™m still not entirely sure how to describe what it was that I was feeling. Guilt? Defeat? Shame? Here I was, trying to set up a habitat for these creatures just to have something to do to keep the suicidal ideation at bay, and Iā€™d failed almost right out of the gate.
Was I just that bad? Was I just that much of a failure? Was this just going to go to shit just like everything else in my life did, because I was just such an abysmal piece of shit who barely deserved the life she had? Had I just not tried hard enough? Was I too apathetic? What had happened? What went wrong?
It bothered me.
It bothered me enough that I made up my mind to just dump the remaining shrimp down the toilet and toss everything. Forget about it. Move on. End of story. Butā€¦ that wasnā€™t fair, was it? The shrimp didnā€™t all deserve to die just because I couldnā€™t be bothered, did they? Sure, they were just shrimp, but they were alive too, just like me. They deserved to be alive.
I owed it to them to try and keep them alive, didnā€™t I?
Soā€¦ I didnā€™t dump the shrimp.
Instead, I started doing some reading. Started looking into what I was doing wrong and how to do it all better. I actually got really into it and a few months later, I had a nice planted tank. Looking back, it was amateur shitā€¦ but it made me happy. Iā€™d even picked out names for my two favorite shrimp. Burger and Tempura. Theyā€™d been the last survivors of my original batch, and they were the ones I ended up caring about the most. Caring for Burger and Tempura gave me a purpose. It became an obsessionā€¦ and that little obsession drove me to finally start turning my life around.
Like I said, shrimp donā€™t live for very long. Burger and Tempura were long dead by the time I graduated with a degree in Marine Biology. But they were the ones who inspired me to finally get my life in order. Hell, the shrimp were half the reason that I met Sheila. She was something of an aquarium fanatic tooā€¦ weā€™d met on a forum, and gotten to talking. I found out that she just so happened to be studying Marine Biology at another school, and we bonded pretty quickly after that. After graduation, I moved to California to be with her and after that, the rest is history. She was my rock. She was the one who always pushed me to be the best possible version of myselfā€¦ and I loved her more than I ever knew I could love someone.
A glance back at the shore, fading into the distance tore me out of my reminiscing, and I shifted my focus to the present, going over The Tempura to perform some quick checks. My colleagues and I would be checking and rechecking the submarine over the next two days as we made our way toward the dive spot. Considering the danger that descending that deep posed, I didnā€™t want to take a single unnecessary risk.
I had too much to live for, after all.
***
The day of the dive, I couldnā€™t notice how excited the rest of the crew seemedā€¦ wellā€¦ Sheilaā€™s usual crew seemed excited. I guess to them, this was just another research expedition, no different than the ones Sheila usually took this ship out on. Lately her research had been focused on the analysis and study of whale calls. Her recent voyages had involved following their pods, recording their calls and playing them back to see how the whales reacted. It was fascinating stuff, but my research was admittedly a lot different than that.
My obsession had drawn me to the denizens of the deep sea. Iā€™d used The Burger for expeditions before, although none of them had been on quite the same scale as this one. Up until today, the most ambitious thing Iā€™d done was send down unmanned submersibles with cameras. Those submersibles had typically returned. We had lost a few early on due to technical glitches, but the past few years had been blissfully uneventful. Logically, this dive would probably be uneventful as well. But it was still hard to get the jitters out of my head.
My team and I did the final checks necessary to make sure that The Tempura was good to go, before setting up the crane to begin lifting it up. In less than an hour, Iā€™d be inside of that thing, descending to the darkest depths of the ocean.
It didnā€™t feel real.
I felt Sheilaā€™s hand on my shoulder, and looked over at her.
ā€œMoment of truth, huh?ā€ She asked. She probably meant it to sound encouraging, but it just sounded ominous.
ā€œMoment of truthā€¦ā€ I replied.
ā€œYouā€™re gonna be okay, honey. I know you will.ā€
She reached out to gently squeeze my hand and gave me a reassuring smile that I meekly returned.
ā€œYeah, itā€™s gonna be okay,ā€ I agreed, although there was an element of a lie in it. Statistically, yes. It probably WOULD be okay. But there was that lingering anxiety in the back of my mind that just wouldnā€™t go away. I looked quietly out at the submarine before me and couldnā€™t shake the thought that it sort of looked like a giant coffin. Unconsciously, I found myself squeezing Sheilaā€™s hand tighter than normal. She just held me close and pressed a kiss to the top of my head, before gently rubbing my back.
ā€œYouā€™ll be okay,ā€ She promised.
ā€œDr. Jenner, weā€™re ready for you.ā€ I heard one of my colleagues say.
Moment of truth.
I took one last look at Sheila, and gave her a quick kiss on the lips for luck. She smiled at me, and I smiled back anxiously at her before heading over toward the submarine.
The crew helped me enter the cockpit and get myself situated inside. The cockpit of the Tempura was fairly cramped and not particularly comfortable. Space and comfort arenā€™t really luxuries you can afford in a submarine like this. The instruments I needed took up a lot of space, leaving little room for me in thereā€¦ and I am not a very big person.
Once I was inside, they sealed the hatch. Then the diagnostics checks began.
ā€œGrayson, can you hear us in there?ā€ I heard Sheila say through the radio.
ā€œLoud and clear,ā€ I replied.
ā€œGreat. Weā€™ll keep in constant radio contact, just to monitor the signal. In the meanwhile, howā€™s everything looking in there?ā€
ā€œGreen across the board so far,ā€ I said, although I hadnā€™t finished running all my final checks yet. Ultimately, nothing was out of place.
This submarine was as good to go as it was going to get.
ā€œIā€™m all good in here,ā€ I said once I was done. ā€œYou can drop me when youā€™re ready.ā€
ā€œYou got it, honey. Letā€™s get you in the water, run one final round of tests and start lowering you down.ā€
A short while later, I felt the submarine begin to move as the crane lifted it off the deck and lowered it into the water. The Tempura honestly resembled its namesake in a way, being long and cigar shaped, only vertically oriented instead of horizontally oriented. Weā€™d admittedly taken more than a few design cues from James Cameronā€™s Deepsea Challenger. Why fix what isnā€™t broken, after all?
Once I was in the water, a 1000 pound releasable ballast weight would cause the submarine to sink. Releasing that weight was also my ticket back to the surface, and I could either trigger it from inside the cockpit, or, in the event that the release failed for any reason, it would trigger automatically after roughly 12 hours of exposure to salt water.
Ideally, this would be the first of a number of dives Iā€™d be undertakingā€¦ and if all went according to plan, the Tempura could be the first of many similar submarines that would allow other researchers to safely and effectively descend to extreme depths. If all went well, this could be a massive leap forward for researchers like me, allowing us to better explore the deepest depths of the Hadal Zone and learn all we could about the ecosystems down there via direct observation.
If all went well.
If.
Through the viewport, I watched as I was lowered into the ocean. A few of the other crew members had donned diving gear to escort me down, and after they did their final checks and I did mine, we were fully ready to go.
ā€œAllā€™s green across the board,ā€ I said into the radio. ā€œYou can start my descent.ā€
ā€œI hear you, honey,ā€ Sheila replied. ā€œWeā€™re letting you go. Have fun down there.ā€
ā€œYeah, Iā€™ll tryā€¦ā€ I said quietly as finally, my submarine began its descent.
I took a deep breath, and told myself again that everything would go fine. We had checked everything on this submarine. Weā€™d tested it rigorously. I wouldnā€™t have allowed myself to set foot inside of it if I hadnā€™t personally assured that it was safe. But anxiety never really goes away, does it? The crew couldnā€™t accompany me far. After only a few meters, they fell behind me as I sank deeper and deeper into the infinite, empty blue of the ocean. Soon after, the tether was released.
I was officially on my own.
ā€œ60 feet,ā€ I heard Sheila say over the radio. ā€œHow are you doing in there?ā€
ā€œGood,ā€ I replied. ā€œDoingā€¦ doing good.ā€
The submarine continued to descend. Through the viewport, I could see a few stray fish, but nothing particularly eye catching. I almost felt alone down thereā€¦ almostā€¦
ā€œ120 feetā€¦ā€ Sheila said.
ā€œStill doing good,ā€ I replied.
The descent continued, as the waters slowly grew darker and darker.
ā€œ400 feetā€¦ā€
Everything around me just kept getting darker and darker. Only a fraction of the light from the sun ever reached these depthsā€¦ and Iā€™d be lying if I said that darkness didnā€™t feel a littleā€¦ oppressive.
ā€œ800 feetā€¦ still feeling good?ā€
ā€œYeah, still feeling goodā€¦ā€ I said, although it was a bit of a lie. If anything, I was second guessing all of this, but I wasnā€™t about to say that out loud.
ā€œ1000 feetā€¦ still good?ā€
ā€œStill goodā€¦ā€ I murmured. ā€œI hear you loud and clear.ā€
Deeperā€¦ deeperā€¦ deeper.
ā€œ1500 feetā€¦ā€
Three miles. I was three miles away from home. Three miles away from Sheila.
ā€œ2000 feetā€¦ā€
Still a ways to go.
ā€œ3000 feetā€¦ā€
By this point, it was fully dark outside of my cockpit. Outside, all I could see was inky darkness. Even the submarineā€™s lights didnā€™t really cut through it. And the kicker? Relatively speaking, I wasnā€™t that deep. Fishing trawlers reached deeper than this. Better to conserve power until I was at the bottom. My descent continued.
ā€œ6000 feetā€¦ still good?ā€
ā€œStill goodā€¦ā€
The check ins were becoming less frequent. My descent still continuedā€¦ deeperā€¦ deeperā€¦ deeper. By now, Iā€™d entered the Hadal Zone. But there was still so much deeper o go.
ā€œ8000 feetā€¦ā€
This was past the depths that most whales would dive toā€¦ and I still had a ways to go.
ā€œ10,000 feet.ā€
This was close to where the ocean floor usually bottomed outā€¦ and yet there was still so much further to go. No. I was really only a third of the way there. How long had it been? Not much had happened beyond my descent and a few sightings out of my viewport, but time had been passing. A glance at my watch confirmed itā€™d been almost an hour since Iā€™d started to sinkā€¦ and I knew I wasnā€™t even close to the bottom yet. The submarine continued to descend, sinking ever deeper as I dropped into an infinite darkness that few had ever dared to witness.
ā€œ15,000 feet.ā€
This check in came later than the others. At this point, Sheila and the crew must have figured that no news was good news, and they were right. I just continued to sink peacefully, down into the crushing depths of the ocean.
These were the depths that one might normally find deep sea fishā€¦ and yet I was going somewhere even deeper than that.
ā€œ20,000 feetā€¦ā€
So closeā€¦
I continued to sink.
ā€œ25,000 feet.ā€
Soonā€¦ and finallyā€¦
ā€œ30,000 feet. You still doing alright, honey?ā€
ā€œYeahā€¦ yeah, Iā€™m doing good,ā€ I assured her. I was so closeā€¦
By this point, my real work had begun. Iā€™d engaged the lights and begun documenting what little I could see using the on board cameras. Granted, there wasnā€™t much life at these depths and what little there was, was scarcely documented. Most of what was down here consisted of invertebrates and microscopic life that seemed to float past my viewport.
The light seemed to draw a few creatures in search of food. Small, hardy things that resembled shrimp.
ā€œHowā€™s it looking, Grayson?ā€
ā€œDark,ā€ I said, half joking. ā€œWeā€™ve got some lifeā€¦ shrimp. Theyā€™re translucent. Canā€™t get a great look at themā€¦ but weā€™ll see what the cameras pick up.ā€
ā€œTheyā€™ve recognized you as a friend,ā€ Sheila said. I could almost see the smile on her lips as she said it.
ā€œYeahā€¦ā€ I replied, ā€œTempura sent them a message, told them Iā€™d be down. How am I looking on depth?ā€
ā€œ35,000 feetā€¦ you seeing a bottom yet?ā€
ā€œNoā€¦ not that I would until I was there.ā€
ā€œDamnā€¦ how deep does this go?ā€
ā€œIt canā€™t go that deepā€¦ā€ I murmured, although I really wasnā€™t so sure about that.
The submarine continued to sinkā€¦
36,000 feetā€¦
37,000 feetā€¦
38,000 feetā€¦ and then finally, just past the 39,000 foot mark, I finally saw solid ground below me.
Looking through my viewport, I could see a familiar dark brown diatomaceous sludge, covering the seafloor. Microscopic life, likely similar to what had been observed in other deep sea trenches, such as the Challenger Deep.
I needed to gather a sample.
As my submarine reached the bottom, I extended the mechanical arms, pressed flat against the surface of the Tempura, and opened the collection port near the bottom of the ship. Slowly, I sifted some of the sludge into the port. My disturbance of the seafloor kicked up a cloud of the microbial colony, and I couldā€™ve sworn I saw something wiggling through the debris. A pale, white thing, perhaps some sort of sea cucumber? I hastily angled my submarines camera to try and catch a glimpse of it, before returning to my collection. Even in this forlorn place, there was still so much to see! And here I wasā€¦ completely forgetting my fear as the excitement took hold of me! Few people had ever been down to these unfathomable depthsā€¦ and yet here I was.
It didnā€™t feel real but it was! I had reached the deepest part of the ocean!
ā€œHowā€™s it going down there?ā€ I heard Sheila ask. Her voice was a little garbled. The connection down here was faltering.
ā€œItā€™s beautifulā€¦ā€ I said. ā€œI canā€™t wait for you to see it!ā€
ā€œIā€™ll betā€¦ā€
ā€œIā€™m going to do a sweep of the area, see what samples I can gather,ā€ I said. ā€œWhatā€™s my time right now?ā€
ā€œThree hours. Youā€™ve got nine before your connection to the weight deteriorates and you start to ascend.ā€
ā€œIā€™ll make the most of it,ā€ I said. The plan was only to stay down there for six hours, and I didnā€™t want to push that limit. Life support would only last me for so long, and one little error was all it would take for the ungodly pressure down here to crush me.
I began to move the submarine. Mobility was limited. This thing wasnā€™t built to travel far. But I still had some limited movement. I recorded all that I could, filming the shrimp that investigated my light, and the things that slithered and crawled through the muck, likely feeding on the carpet of single celled organisms that populated these depths.
The first two hours wereā€¦ wellā€¦ I hesitate to call them uneventful, they were actually very fascinating, but little of note happened beyond my recording of a few specimens.
Midway through the third hour though, as I was reaching one of the rock walls of the abyss, I noticed something just above the edge of my viewport swimming away from the light. I couldā€™ve sworn I saw slender, pale tentacles of some sort. Was that a squid? Were there squid down this deep? I wasnā€™t aware of any species of known squid who could reach these depthsā€¦ but in this unknown place, what use was the known?
I moved my light and my camera to try and catch another glimpse of it, but whatever it was, it seemed to be gone. Maybe Iā€™d see another one. I still had plenty of time.
ā€œYou made a noise. Whatā€™d you see?ā€ Sheila asked.
ā€œSomething bigā€¦ I think,ā€ I said.
ā€œDown there? Like a fish?ā€
ā€œSquid. You wouldnā€™t find any vertebrates down this deepā€¦ the pressure would crush their bones.ā€
ā€œJeezā€¦ā€
I didnā€™t reply to that, still searching for the thing Iā€™d seen. I shone my light up along the walls of the chasm and angled my camera up as far as it would go. I could see a few volcanic vents, spewing dark clouds into the darkness, and more diatoms. But not much else. Strange invertebrates crawled along the walls. Small creatures, no bigger than an inch long. Related to isopods, perhaps? If I could collect one as a sample, I would haveā€¦ although taking any of those back to the surface would surely kill them. They were built to live under the impossible pressure of these depths. Taking them to the surface would rip them apart.
I went back to my research, and it wasnā€™t long until I saw something in the darkness, just on the edge of where my flashlight reached. Trailing white tendrils, snaking their way through the darkness. My eyes narrowed as I moved the submarine forward, trying to catch whatever it was in the light. I saw the shape move, its body turningā€¦ I saw its tendrils unfurling. Whatever this was, it was big. It was almost as big as The Tempuraā€¦ although it was also slender. If I didnā€™t know any better, I wouldā€™ve thought I was looking at some sort of floating debris, but this far down? No. And debris wouldnā€™t move like that.
This had to be a deepsea squidā€¦ or perhaps some other type of cephalopod? Something that preyed upon the various invertebrates down here, perhaps? It seemed to float, just out of sight for a bit, as I tried to get closer. I angled up my light to get a better look at it. The light seemed to shine through it, like some sort of ghostā€¦ but I did manage to get a look at it.
Although that lookā€¦
That single look made me freeze up.
This things slender tendrils certainly resembled a cephalopod of some sort, but the rest of itā€¦ the rest of it looked like something else entirely. Its body was thin, emaciated and translucent, yet despite that it still had characteristics that almost seemedā€¦ human. It wasnā€™t human! Not by any stretch of imagination, but the resemblance was there. It almost reminded me of an exhibit Iā€™d seen in a museum once, depicting a preserved, fully removed human nervous system. I could see a similar shape in its translucent body. Its head seemed almost human as wellā€¦ albeit with no eyes, and a lamprey like mouth I could only describe as fleshy yet crablike.
Still, despite having no eyes I couldnā€™t shake the feeling that it was looking at me. And that was when I felt something hit the submarine.
I felt a sudden jolt of panic in my chest. For a moment, I thought that the pressure had started to crush me, but noā€¦ no, everything was still fine. Something had just hit me. But what? It didnā€™t take long before I got my answer.
Another pale creature floated past my viewport, swirling gracefully in the cold dark waters. I watched it for a moment with wide eyes, before noticing its ā€˜headā€™ turning slightly toward me. Then, almost instantly, it launched itself at the submarine, darting toward me with blinding speed.
I heard a distinct THUD as its body collided with me, and I could see its pale tendrils pressing against the viewport, twisting and writhing violently. It was trying to attack me. The first creature that Iā€™d seen lunged as well, pounding on my submarine with another THUD. And moments later, I could hear more impacts against the hull. There were more of themā€¦ and they did not like having me down there.
ā€œWhatā€™s going on?ā€ Sheila asked.
ā€œSomebody doesnā€™t like meā€¦ā€ I said. ā€œOne of the animals down hereā€¦ some kind of squid, itā€™s just started attacking the hull.ā€
ā€œHow bad is the damage?ā€
ā€œNot sureā€¦ could be nothing, could be-ā€
I felt the submarine shake as I tried to move it. The thrusters that pushed me forward weren't responding. Had something gotten caught in it? One of the creatures perhaps?
ā€œGrayson?!ā€ Sheila asked.
ā€œLost propulsionā€¦ā€ I said. ā€œFuckā€¦ I canā€™t move.ā€
ā€œThen drop the weight and come up!ā€
ā€œNo, itā€™s fine, thereā€™s no other damage, I can still use the port and starboard thrusters to-ā€
ā€œGrayson!ā€
I paused. There was genuine panic in her voiceā€¦ enough to make me realize that even if these things stood little chance of actually breaching the hull, taking the risk would be a fatal mistake.
ā€œIā€™m on my way upā€¦ā€ I finally said, before reaching out to disengage the ballast weights.
Immediately, I felt myself beginning to rise, although the tentacles clinging to my viewport didnā€™t disappear.
ā€œWeā€™ve got youā€¦ā€ Sheila said. ā€œRising up to 38,000 feet.ā€
The submarine continued to rise, but the creatures clinging to me went nowhere. In factā€¦ I was sure I could see more of them. More pale shapes coming up through the darkness, and these ones filled me with dread. I thought I had been looking at some sort of eerie undiscovered life. But seeing what was coming up toward me nowā€¦ I knew that I was looking at so much more. The creatures swimming up toward me through the darkness carried weaponsā€¦ makeshift stone spears and daggers. Primitive toolsā€¦ but tools all the same.
Signs that these were more than just undiscovered animals.
Much. Much more.
The word: ā€˜Mermaidsā€™ crossed through my mind, but these were something far different than the ones Iā€™d heard of in folklore. These looked like theyā€™d swam out of the depths of hell itself. Boneless pale tendrils reached for meā€¦ and they were getting closer. The pale shapes reached my submarine as I rose higher. I kept praying to whatever God may be listening that the dropping pressure would force them off. The air in a submarine is pressurized, so during normal operation, there should have been no danger of decompression sickness for me.
For themā€¦ wellā€¦ normally Iā€™d feel a little guilty about subjecting an undiscovered species of deep sea mermaids to the horrors of the Bends. But given my circumstances, I didnā€™t have a lot of other options.
They didnā€™t let go, though.
They should have. But they didnā€™t.
What were these things?
I saw a splayed hand press against my viewport. Orā€¦ it somewhat resembled a hand. It had suckers on it, like a tentacle and the ā€˜fingersā€™ curled open like tentacles. The creature crawled over my viewport, clinging to The Tempura as it rose, and I could see the folds of its crablike mouth opening and pressing against the glass. I could see some sort of bile rising up through its translucent throat, before it secreted it all over my viewport. Was it trying to digest me? Was that how these things fed? How strong were its stomach acids? Were they strong enough to-
The window cracked.
My heart skipped a beat.
ā€œNoā€¦ no, no noā€¦ā€
ā€œGrayson, whatā€™s wrong?!ā€
ā€œThey cracked the windowā€¦ S-Sheila theyā€¦ oh Godā€¦ oh fuck, they justā€¦ā€
ā€œTHEY DID WHAT?ā€
ā€œItā€™s secreting some sort of enzymeā€¦ itā€™s on the window, itā€™sā€¦ FUCKā€¦ Iā€™m gonna dieā€¦ Iā€™m gonna dieā€¦ Iā€™m gonna dieā€¦ā€
ā€œYouā€™re not gonna die, baby! Justā€¦ just keep ascending, okay? Youā€™re at 30,000 feetā€¦ just keep goingā€¦ā€
I nodded, and kept on rising, although the question of whether or not the rest of the creatures were trying to digest the other parts of my submarine floated through my mind. How much damage could The Tempura take before it imploded? How much longer did I have? The submarine still continued to riseā€¦ 25,000 feetā€¦ almost halfway homeā€¦ almostā€¦ almost.
The creature outside of my viewport slithered along the glass, searching for a better area to try and digest. Past him, I noticed a few of his companions dropping off. Maybe the change in pressure finally was getting to them?
From the corner of my eye, I suddenly noticed a flashing light. A warning. The hydraulics on one of the Tempuraā€™s arms were shotā€¦ what else was damaged?
I checked my oxygen levels. 32%.
I shouldā€™ve had at least 14 hours of air. Iā€™d only been down there for about 6 hoursā€¦ I shouldnā€™t have been this low.
31%.
Noā€¦ no, no, no, noā€¦ theyā€™d damaged the air tanks!
30%.
29%
ā€œ20,000 feet!ā€ Sheila said. ā€œYou still with me, baby?ā€
ā€œY-yeahā€¦ā€ I said. I didnā€™t mention my air situation. I didnā€™t need to worry her further.
The submarine continued its ascent.
15,000 feet.
24%. I was running out of time.
The creatures still clung to the Tempura. How had the pressure change not killed them yet? My oxygen was dropping faster than before. I was hemorrhaging air. Another crack formed across my viewport. I let out a little, involuntary gasp before trying to force myself to stop hyperventilating.
ā€œGrayson, what was that?ā€
ā€œI-itā€™s fineā€¦ā€ I stammered, ā€œItā€™s fine!ā€
ā€œGrayson what the hell is going on down there?!ā€
ā€œTheyā€™re still on the submarineā€¦ theyā€™re stillā€¦ā€ I paused, looking at my oxygen levels. ā€œ19%...ā€
ā€œ19% of what? Grayson whatā€™s going on!ā€
I paused.
18%.
ā€œAirā€¦ Iā€™mā€¦ Iā€™m losing airā€¦ā€
ā€œThatā€™s fine, youā€™re going to make it!ā€ She said, although I heard her voice cracking a little. ā€œYouā€™re gonna make it!ā€
I didnā€™t answer.
12,000 feet.
11,000 feetā€¦
My oxygen level continued to drop.
15%.
14%.
12%.
9,000 feet.
The creatures still clung to me, as the submarine continued to rise. The one on my viewport was still there, slowly crawling along the glass again. I stared into its eyeless face and swore I was looking at the face of my killer.
7,000 feetā€¦
Oxygen had dropped to 9%. It dropped to 8% before I even got to 6,000 feet. I was going to die hereā€¦
The viewport cracked again and I squeezed my eyes shut. The submarine rocked. I was sure one of the thrusters had been damaged. My ascent slowed.
ā€œGrayson, whatā€™s going on?ā€
ā€œIā€™m sorry Sheilaā€¦ā€
Another crack spread across my viewport.
ā€œIā€™mā€¦ Iā€™m not making it back upā€¦ā€
ā€œYES YOU ARE!ā€
ā€œIā€™m sorryā€¦ā€ The tears started to come as the reality of my death became clearer and clearerā€¦ this was it.
ā€œYOUā€™RE COMING BACK UP, YOU HEAR ME! GODDAMNIT, Iā€™LL BRING YOU BACK UP!ā€
ā€œI love youā€¦ā€
That creatures face pressed against the glass. It vomited more of its stomach acid onto the cracked glass, and I wondered if this might finally be what broke it. Part of me hoped it would beā€¦ the one good thing about dying this deep was that at least Iā€™d die quickly. My suffering would be over. Then, the creature suddenly pulled back, twisting and writhing violently. I saw other shapes moving past it in the water, other ā€˜mermaidsā€™ that had been clinging to the submarine.
Something was agitating them.
Something was scaring them off.
Then I heard it, over the radioā€¦ whale songs.
ā€œWhat the hellā€¦?ā€
ā€œGrayson, are you still there?!ā€
ā€œIā€¦ theyā€™re finally breaking off. Sheila, what did you do?ā€
ā€œIā€™m broadcasting some of the orca recordings weā€™ve been using. Are they still clinging to you?ā€
ā€œNo! Theyā€™re backing off! Iā€¦ whatever youā€™re doing, keep doing it!ā€
The submarine kept rising.
5,000 feet.
4,000 feet.
4% oxygen.
I could still do this, right?
The submarine continued to rise.
3%.
3,000 feet.
2,000 feet.
2%.
1,000 feetā€¦ so closeā€¦ I was so closeā€¦
I could almost see the surface through my viewport, rushing up toward me. I tried not to breathe. Tried not to move. All I did was hope.
500 feet.
I closed my eyes.
ā€œGrayson we have your signal, weā€™re coming to pick you up!ā€
Sheilaā€™s voice sounded so far away as my submarine finally breached the surface of the waterā€¦ and with the last of my strength, I pulled the emergency release on the hatch, and threw it open, taking in lungful after lungful of fresh salty air.
I didnā€™t dare so much as touch the water beneath meā€¦ but I was topside again, and in the distance, I could see The Burger!
ā€œWe see you!ā€ Sheila said, ā€œWeā€™ve got you babyā€¦ weā€™ve got youā€¦ā€
ā€œI see you tooā€¦ā€ I said through the tears. ā€œThank youā€¦ thank youā€¦ā€ I didnā€™t have any words left in me after that.
As soon as I was back on the ship, I collapsed into Sheilaā€™s arms, breaking down into tears as I clung to her, terrified that at any moment, some sort of unspoken other shoe would drop and Iā€™d lose her all over again.
ā€œShhā€¦ itā€™s alright babyā€¦ Iā€™ve got youā€¦ youā€™re safeā€¦ youā€™re safeā€¦ā€ I felt her fingers running through my air and I knew that what she said was true.
I was home.
I was safe.
***
I left my colleagues to review the data that the Tempura gathered during its short expedition. As far as I know, they havenā€™t published anything. I have a few ideas as to why, but Iā€™ll keep those to myself. Letā€™s just say that some people would rather this information not become public.
I have a feeling that the Tempura may not be diving again for some time, if ever. I will confess that I do consider that a bit of a shame. Despite everythingā€¦ I would consider it a success. It endured far more stressful conditions than I had expected, and from what I heard, required fewer repairs than Iā€™d thought it would. But, even if it was approved for another dive, it wouldnā€™t be me piloting it. No. I will never be setting foot inside of that machine again, nor will I ever be returning to what my colleagues have been quietly referring to as ā€˜The Jenner Trenchā€™.
I canā€™t.
Every night, I wake up crying after dreaming of pale shapes outside of my cracked viewport, clinging to Sheila and sobbing. I canā€™t put myself in that situation again.
I canā€™t.
Instead, I think Iā€™m going to spend the next few years on solid ground. Thereā€™s a teaching position available at a local university. I think that might be the best place for me right now. Who knows, maybe I can help some other deadbeat discover a passion for marine biology.
After everything, my love for the sea remains unchangedā€¦ Iā€™m just a little more wary of it, these days.

2024.05.15 18:48 yuckgeneric iOS 17.5: 17.4.1 on iPhone 13 Pro Max CRASHES all the time, is 17.5 fixing the issues?

Does 17.5 fix previous versionā€™s issues, or are there now even worse problems/different problems? Did anyone whose phone got screwed up by the previous iOS version 17.4.1 install this & now issues are resolved?
My phone was on auto updates and when 17.4.1 was installed - battery overheats/phone auto shut-downs; -Apple CarPlay not usable because plugging in to usb causes overheating -Appleā€™s native podcast app totally unusable (Crashed each time after 30 seconds).
Googling shows other people had way worse problems with 17.4.1 iOS. Apple Store told me to wait for the next iOS update To fix these issues (Not impressive!)
I donā€™t trust updates anymore and need general consensus on the latest iOS version BEFORE I install update

2024.05.15 18:44 Ebrius_Diaboli I am incredibly frustrated...

Coming from someone that, if you rated my experience with a bios to tweak my processor, I'm probably a 3-4/10...
For the love of God, with all of this confusion as far as "Intels Baseline profile" debacle.... How in the hell is a basic PC Gamer like myself, supposed to navigate around this damn mess, just so I could have a gaming experience that matches the money I paid for my CPU, WITHOUT MY FU**ING CPU degrading and becoming worthless!!!!!!
The motherboard manufacturers like Asus, are still running what they thought was the BIOS fix for this issue from April. Intel is telling customers to set the settings they recommend ourselves. But that's not FU**ING good enough.... Because I don't know what the hell that chart means and where to adjust them in my BIOS, because every motherboard's bios looks different.
I've had my 14,900k for 5 months and I have no idea if it's degraded or not, but I know for a fact that it crashes with the out of memory error as well, when playing certain games or when it's caching shaders.
So number one... What am I supposed to do with my CPU where my performance isn't getting f***** into becoming an i7... And it won't degrade (if it hasnt already after 5 months of running a bios from December)
Number two, can I RMA my chip to get a fresh one for wheN motherboards release a proper bios for whatever the hell schizoid Intel decides their chips should run at.

2024.05.15 18:28 anonyuser415 Tutorial: How to Fix "Unknown issue occurred" on Wiz v2 App

This might not work for every instance of this extremely generic error.

If you are having this problem:

  1. When changing anything about your lightbulbs through the Wiz v2 app (color, on/off, dimmer)
  2. You instead get an "Unknown issue occurred" error
  3. Only through repeated tries (5-8) does it go through without an error
  4. And this problem keeps popping up regularly, even after restarting the app

Here's how to fix it:

  1. From the Wiz v2 app's initial screen, tap Settings in the bottom right
  2. Tap User, at the top
  3. Tap Sign Out
  4. Sign back in
I suspect that there's some authorization behind the scenes that goes stale over time. Signing out and back in may refresh that value.

2024.05.15 17:31 rewas4356 Cant transfer data from iPhone 6 to iPhone 13

I recently got an iPhone 13 and I wanted to transfer the data from my iPhone 6 to the new phone. However, I've tried the wireless transfer multiple times and it gives me the same two errors, either "Unable to complete the data transfer" , because connection to the phone was lost or "Move device closer to continue", even though they're right beside each other. I've tried many 'fix' methods on Youtube but it just dosent help.
Whenever the first type of error pops up, on my iPhone 6 it says that the process has been completed and it exits on the old phone. This happens right before the actual data transfer process starts.
In the 2nd type of error, everything goes smoothly until the data transfer process starts. It goes to that page and then shows that its estimating the time it will take to transfer the data, but just a minute later it'll say that the iPhones are too far away.
The iPhone 6 is running iOS 12.5 and the iPhone 13 is running iOS 17.

2024.05.15 17:12 No-Physics7479 Digital ICs (Integrated Circuits)

Digital ICs, also known as logic ICs, are designed to process signals in binary form, utilizing only two states, 0 and 1, to represent information. This binary signal processing approach offers several advantages, including simplicity, ease of performing logical operations, and reduced chip area.
Operating Principle:
The fundamental structure of a digital IC consists of logic gates interconnected according to a specific design. Each logic gate performs a basic logical function such as AND, OR, NOT, etc. When binary signals (0, 1) are applied to the logic gates, they are processed and generate new binary signals at the output.
Classification of Digital ICs:
Digital ICs are categorized into various types based on their function and structure, including:

1. Logic Gates

Logic gates are the fundamental building blocks of digital circuits. They perform basic logical operations on binary data, such as AND, OR, NOT, XOR, and more. These operations are essential for manipulating information and implementing various computational tasks in electronic systems.
Key Characteristics:
Ā· Binary Inputs and Outputs: Logic gates operate on binary data, represented by two distinct states, typically 0 and 1. They take one or more binary inputs and produce a single binary output based on the specified logical operation.
Ā· Truth Tables: Truth tables define the behavior of logic gates by listing all possible input combinations and the corresponding output values. These tables provide a clear representation of the gate's functionality.
Ā· Hardware Implementation: Logic gates can be physically implemented using various electronic components, such as transistors, diodes, and resistors. The specific implementation depends on the desired logic family and performance characteristics.
Common Logic Gate Types:
1. AND Gate: Performs the logical AND operation, producing a 1 output only if all inputs are 1. It represents the "and" condition, requiring all inputs to be true for the output to be true.
2. OR Gate: Performs the logical OR operation, producing a 1 output if any or all inputs are 1. It represents the "or" condition, indicating that the output is true if at least one input is true.
3. NOT Gate: Performs the logical NOT operation, inverting the input. It produces a 1 output if the input is 0 and a 0 output if the input is 1. It represents the "not" condition, negating the input value.
4. XOR Gate: Performs the logical exclusive OR operation, producing a 1 output only if the inputs are different (0 and 1 or 1 and 0). It represents the "exclusive or" condition, indicating that the output is true only if the inputs have opposite values.
Applications of Logic Gates:
Logic gates are the foundation of digital circuits, enabling the construction of various electronic components and systems:
Ā· Digital Arithmetic Circuits: Logic gates are used to build arithmetic circuits that perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division operations on binary numbers.
Ā· Boolean Expression Simplification: Logic gates can be combined to represent and simplify Boolean expressions, reducing the complexity of digital circuits.
Ā· Data Encoding and Decoding: Logic gates are employed in data encoding and decoding schemes, such as binary to gray code conversion and error detection and correction codes.
Ā· Control Logic and Sequential Circuits: Logic gates are essential for designing control logic in sequential circuits, such as flip-flops, counters, and registers, enabling state storage and timing control.
Logic Gate Families:
Several logic gate families have been developed, each with its own advantages and disadvantages:
Ā· RTL (Resistor-Transistor Logic): A simple and early logic family, but with high power consumption and slow speed.
Ā· DTL (Diode-Transistor Logic): An improvement over RTL, offering better speed and lower power consumption.
Ā· TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic): A widely used family known for its balance of speed, power consumption, and noise immunity.
Ā· CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor): A modern family with extremely low power consumption, high speed, and high integration density.
Ā· ECL (Emitter-Coupled Logic): A high-speed family used in high-performance applications, but with higher power consumption and complexity.
The choice of logic family depends on factors such as speed, power consumption, noise immunity, and cost. CMOS has become the dominant logic family due to its superior performance and integration capabilities.
Significance of Logic Gates:
Logic gates play a crucial role in the realm of digital electronics, forming the bedrock of modern computers and digital devices:
Ā· Digital Computation: Logic gates enable the execution of complex computations and data manipulation, driving the processing power of digital systems.
Ā· Logic Design and Circuitry: They provide the fundamental building blocks for designing and constructing various digital circuits, from simple logic functions to sophisticated microprocessors.
Ā· Fundamental Building Blocks: Logic gates serve as the essential components that underpin the vast array of digital technologies that shape our modern world.
The development of logic gates has revolutionized the way we process information and interact with technology, enabling the creation of increasingly powerful and versatile electronic devices.

2. Memory

Memory is an essential component of any digital system, responsible for storing data and instructions that enable the system to function. It serves as the repository of information that the system processes and manipulates.
Key Components:
1. Memory Cells: The fundamental units of memory, each capable of storing one bit of data (0 or 1). Memory cells are typically based on transistors or other electronic components that can maintain a stable state.
2. Address Decoder: Responsible for translating memory addresses into specific memory cells. It receives an address from the CPU or other accessing device and identifies the corresponding memory cell where the data resides.
3. Read/Write Control Circuit: Manages the data transfer process between the CPU or other accessing device and the memory cells. It controls the reading of data from memory cells during read operations and the writing of data into memory cells during write operations.
4. Buffer: A temporary storage area that holds data during memory access operations. It acts as a bridge between the faster CPU or accessing device and the slower memory, reducing overall system latency.
Operating Principle:
Memory stores data by altering the state of memory cells. Each cell can represent one bit of data, either a 0 or a 1. The memory address serves as a unique identifier for each cell, enabling the system to locate the specific cell where data resides.
When the CPU or another device needs to access data from memory, it issues a memory request that includes the desired address. The address decoder translates this address into the corresponding memory cell. The read/write control circuit then activates the appropriate cell, either retrieving the stored data (read operation) or updating the cell's state with new data (write operation).
The buffer plays a crucial role in optimizing memory access by temporarily holding data during the transfer process. This reduces the overall delay experienced by the CPU or other accessing device, improving system performance.
Types of Memory:
Memory can be broadly classified into two main categories based on its data retention characteristics:
1. Random Access Memory (RAM): Volatile memory that stores data that can be changed or modified. Data in RAM is lost when the power is turned off. RAM is typically used for storing temporary data, such as program instructions, operating system data, and currently active applications.
2. Read-Only Memory (ROM): Non-volatile memory that stores fixed data that cannot be altered. Data in ROM remains intact even when the power is turned off. ROM is typically used for storing permanent data, such as firmware, boot code, and system configuration information.
Additional Memory Types:
Ā· Programmable Read-Only Memory (PROM): A type of ROM that can be programmed once by the user, typically using a high-voltage device.
Ā· Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EPROM): A type of PROM that can be erased and reprogrammed multiple times using ultraviolet light.
Ā· Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM): A type of non-volatile memory that can be erased and reprogrammed electronically, without the need for external light sources.
Ā· Flash Memory: A type of EEPROM that offers fast erase and write operations, making it suitable for use in portable devices and solid-state drives.
Significance of Memory:
Memory plays a fundamental role in modern digital systems:
Ā· Data Storage: It provides the storage medium for essential data, including program instructions, operating system files, user data, and multimedia content.
Ā· System Operation: Memory enables the continuous operation of the system by retaining critical information, such as system state, application data, and intermediate results of calculations.
Ā· Performance Enhancement: Memory plays a crucial role in optimizing system performance by providing fast access to frequently used data and instructions.
The development of memory technologies has been a driving force in the advancement of computing, enabling the creation of increasingly powerful and versatile electronic devices.
3. Clock Circuit
Significance of Clock Circuits
Clock circuits play a crucial role in the operation of digital electronic devices. They provide the essential timing signal that synchronizes the operation of various components within the system, ensuring coordinated and efficient data processing. The frequency of the clock signal directly impacts the speed of the circuit, enabling faster and more powerful electronic devices.
Advancements in clock circuit technology have led to the development of higher-frequency, more stable, and lower-power clock circuits, contributing to the continuous improvement of electronic devices in terms of performance, efficiency, and reliability..
Components of a Clock Circuit
The basic components of a clock circuit include:
1. Oscillator: Generates the fundamental clock signal. Oscillators can utilize various elements, such as quartz crystals, ceramic resonators, or RC (resistor-capacitor) networks, to produce a stable and accurate clock signal.
2. Frequency Divider: Divides the clock signal from the oscillator down to the desired frequency. This is necessary because the oscillator may generate a much higher frequency than required by the circuit.
3. Counter: Counts the clock pulses from the frequency divider. The count value can be used for various purposes, such as generating timing signals or keeping track of time.
4. Decoder: Decodes the count value from the counter into specific time signals, such as seconds, minutes, or hours. This is particularly useful for applications that require real-time clock functionality.
Operating Principle:
A clock circuit operates by generating a clock signal with a stable frequency. This clock signal is used to synchronize the operation of other ICs in the system. The oscillator generates the basic clock signal, which is then divided by the frequency divider and counted by the counter. The decoder decodes the count value into time signals.
Types of Clock Circuits
Clock circuits can be categorized into two main types:
1. Internal Clock Circuit: Integrated within the IC itself. This type of clock circuit is commonly found in microcontrollers and other integrated circuits that require a clock signal for their internal operation.
2. External Clock Circuit: Provides a clock signal for multiple ICs. This type of clock circuit is often used in larger digital systems where multiple ICs need to be synchronized.
Common Clock Circuit Types
Several types of clock circuits are commonly used in electronic devices:
1. RC Oscillator Circuit: A simple and inexpensive oscillator circuit that utilizes resistors and capacitors to generate a clock signal.
2. LC Oscillator Circuit: A more stable and accurate oscillator circuit that employs an inductor and capacitor to produce the clock signal.
3. Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) Circuit: A sophisticated oscillator circuit that locks its frequency to a reference signal, ensuring high stability and precision.

4. Communication Circuits

Communication Circuits

Communication circuits enable integrated circuits (ICs) to exchange information with external devices, facilitating data transfer, device interaction, and system control. These circuits play a crucial role in modern electronic systems, enabling them to function as interconnected components within a larger network.
Key Components:
1. Physical Interface: Establishes a physical connection between the IC and the external device. This can be realized through pins, connectors, or wireless transmission mediums.
2. Data Transmission Circuit: Handles the encoding and decoding of data for transmission and reception. It ensures that data is converted into a suitable format for transmission over the physical interface and accurately interpreted upon reception.
3. Communication Control Circuit: Orchestrates the data transfer process, ensuring proper timing, synchronization, error detection, and error correction. It manages the exchange of data between the IC and the external device in a controlled and reliable manner.
Operating Principle:
Communication circuits operate by establishing a physical link between the IC and the external device, enabling the exchange of electrical signals. The data transmission circuit then encodes the data from the IC into a format suitable for transmission over the physical interface. This may involve converting the data into a serial bit stream, modulating it onto a carrier signal, or encapsulating it in a communication protocol frame.
Once transmitted, the data is received by the external device and passed to its communication circuit. The data transmission circuit then decodes the received data, converting it back into a format that the IC can understand. This may involve demodulating the signal, extracting the data from the protocol frame, or converting the serial bit stream into parallel data.
The communication control circuit oversees the entire data transfer process, ensuring that the data is transmitted and received in a synchronized and error-free manner. It may employ techniques such as clock synchronization, error detection codes, and retransmission mechanisms to guarantee data integrity.
Types of Communication Circuits:
Communication circuits encompass a wide range of technologies tailored for specific communication protocols and applications:
1. Data Bus: Enables multiple ICs to communicate with each other over a shared data path. Data buses are commonly used in microprocessors and other digital systems to transfer data between various components.
2. Serial Communication Port: Facilitates sequential data transmission between ICs, one bit at a time. Serial communication is often employed in applications where bandwidth is limited or long-distance communication is required.
3. Parallel Communication Port: Allows for simultaneous transmission of multiple bits of data between ICs, providing faster data transfer rates compared to serial communication. Parallel communication is commonly used in high-speed data transfer applications.
4. Wireless Communication: Enables ICs to communicate with other devices without the need for physical cables. Wireless communication technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular networks are becoming increasingly prevalent in modern electronic devices.
Significance of Communication Circuits:
Communication circuits are indispensable components in modern electronic devices, enabling them to:
Ā· Exchange data with other devices, such as sensors, actuators, and peripherals.
Ā· Interact with user inputs, such as keyboards, buttons, and touchscreens.
Ā· Respond to network requests and commands.
Ā· Participate in distributed systems and control networks.
The advancement of communication circuit technology has led to the development of higher-speed, more reliable, and more energy-efficient communication interfaces, enabling the creation of more sophisticated and interconnected electronic devices that can seamlessly interact with the surrounding environment and with each other.

5. Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The central processing unit (CPU) serves as the "brain" of a computer system, orchestrating the execution of instructions and processing data to drive various operations. It is the heart of a computer, responsible for carrying out calculations, manipulating data, and managing the overall flow of information within the system.
Key Components:
1. Processing Unit: The core of the CPU, responsible for performing arithmetic and logical operations on data. It comprises components like arithmetic logic units (ALUs), floating-point units (FPUs), and registers that handle data manipulation and computations.
2. Control Unit: The maestro of the CPU, directing the overall operation and execution of instructions. It fetches instructions from memory, decodes them into understandable commands, and coordinates the activities of other CPU components to ensure proper instruction execution.
3. Cache Memory: A high-speed storage area that temporarily holds frequently accessed data and instructions, reducing the need for slower memory access. Cache memory acts as a buffer, improving overall system performance by providing faster access to essential data.
4. Data Bus: The communication highway that transports data between the CPU and other system components, such as memory and input/output devices. It serves as the data transfer channel, enabling the exchange of information between the CPU and various parts of the system.
5. Address Bus: The address decoder that identifies the specific location of data or instructions stored in memory. It acts as a pointer, pinpointing the exact memory address where data or instructions reside.
6. Control Bus: The traffic controller that manages the operation of the data bus and address bus, ensuring synchronized data transfers and maintaining overall system coordination. It regulates the flow of data and addresses between the CPU and other components.
Operating Principle:
The CPU functions by executing instructions stored in memory. These instructions dictate the operations to be performed and the data to be processed. The control unit plays a pivotal role in this process, fetching instructions from memory, deciphering their meaning, and directing other CPU units to carry out the specified tasks.
1. Instruction Fetch: The control unit retrieves instructions from memory, typically from the main memory or cache memory.
2. Instruction Decode: The control unit interprets the fetched instructions, breaking them down into their constituent parts and understanding the operations they represent.
3. Instruction Execution: The control unit directs the appropriate CPU units, such as the ALU or FPU, to execute the decoded instructions. These units perform the specified calculations or data manipulations.
4. Result Storage: The outcomes of the executed instructions, such as calculated values or processed data, are stored in registers or memory locations, making them available for further use.
The CPU continuously cycles through this fetch-decode-execute-store process, tirelessly processing instructions and manipulating data to drive the computer system's operations.
Significance of the CPU:
The CPU is the cornerstone of a computer system, enabling it to perform its fundamental tasks:
Ā· Execute programs and applications: The CPU interprets and carries out the instructions that make up software programs, allowing users to run various applications.
Ā· Process data: The CPU performs calculations, manipulates data, and transforms information, enabling the computer to handle complex computations and data analysis.
Ā· Control system operations: The CPU manages the overall flow of information and coordinates the activities of other system components, ensuring smooth and efficient system operation.
The performance and capabilities of the CPU significantly impact the overall responsiveness, speed, and processing power of a computer system. Advancements in CPU technology have led to the development of faster, more efficient, and more powerful CPUs, enabling the creation of increasingly sophisticated and capable computers.

2024.05.15 16:17 Jakatagarin Torch refusing to be installed, Automatic1111 not working

I'm going insane. I'm trying to make this work since 4 hours already, and the more "fixes" from the internet I use the more errors I get. I tried everything to make my Automatic1111 run, dispite it working fine today's morning, without making any changes to the program, it suddenly stopped working. I get all sorts of errors, mostly connected with Torch or pip.

2024.05.15 16:12 ars4l4n Google Calendar Notifications randomly stopped appearing

What I tried so far:
I rechecked if the notification settings were right or if there was any sort of error. There was none and the settings looked right. The issue just started randomly and only on this device. I get Google Calendar notifications on the same Google account on my Google phone. I also tried turning off and on the accounts on the Google Calendar in the Manage Accountsā€“page as well as deleting and readding them there. Additionally, I tried rebooting the device.
None of that helped.
How do I fix this?
iOS 16.5, iPhone 12 Mini
By the way, the only answers I found to similar topics on Google looked copy-pasted and as if they were made by bots. Please abstain from that and don't waste my time.

2024.05.15 16:04 lovesouthernaccents Hulu App on Phone Stopped Working with Android Auto

Hi All
I'm not sure if this the right sub to ask, but I usually watch shows in the car when I'm parked or will listen to audio I've seen already (I.e., listening to a show such as Bob's Burgers with the screen of my device laid down first and just listen as background noise over music).
I've swapped between android and iPhones (have never had this issue on the iPhone) the past few years and recently swapped to a Samsung S24+ and when I'm connected to android auto and trying to just listen to the audio of a show or something Hulu will not open at all and says something like your device you're connected too is not able to support the stream or something like that and gives me the error code f653c05b-c. If anyone has any solutions to fix this I'd appreciate it!
Thanks <3

2024.05.15 15:36 Intelligent-Yam8298 After my disk fixed itself, seems like 32 bit software doesn't work anymore

My HDD encountered an issue 3 days ago, fixed itself after about 2 hours and after that everything was going fine until today, where 32 bit games just don't launch on it.
These include: Geometry Dash and Terraria (unmodded) both being 32 bit, which worked fine after the disk fixed itself for about 2 days.
Ironically, Terraria's Modded launcher called "tModLoader" is 64 bit and requires terraria to be open to work, but it somehow manages to launch it and boot itself, Other 64 bit games work as well without problem.
When booting GD from the .exe and not steam, i had it show that some .dll files are missing, so i downloaded the 2 i needed, and then the error turned into "App wasn't launched properly".
What happens is: I press play on steam, it lingers as "playing" for 2-4 seconds, and then closes itself.
Windows 10 Pro Edition.

As always, questions are sorted by topic, and each Q&A is annotated with a bracketed source number. Links to every source used and to the other parts of this compilation will be provided in a comment below.
The previous post focused on the essence of the Murtagh book and character. This installment will cover additional Murtagh-related questions, such as about specific elements of the writing process. The next post will cover the writing and publication of Eragon.

Further Details about Writing Murtagh

Creating the Maps
For Murtagh I did all the maps after writing the book, but that's because I already knew all the locations and was familiar with them from writing the series. So I didn't need to do the maps before writing the book. [12]
What is your system for drawing maps? I usually start by thinking of what I want a location to look like. And that has nothing to do with a map. That's usually just thinking about how it will serve the story. And then the map will be based off of that. The biggest decision is usually what the style of the map should be, whether I want to do like a top-down city map for a place, or if I want it to be a more of a realistic image. So more of, let's say, a landscape painting, one could say, or if I want to do something that's more allegorical and evocative or symbolic, which there's actually one of those in Murtagh that really isn't a map, but it's a symbolic map, let's put it that way. And all of that is governed by what is the effect I hope to achieve with the reader. Because if it doesn't achieve the effect I want, then what's the point of doing it. I do try to avoid maps where I have to draw every single building if it's a city map because that's just annoying. I'd rather draw mountains than cities. [12]
I love the sort of top-down look, which is why I drew the the original map for Eragon in this style. [12]
Maps are an awesome thing, and they add so much to a world. And that's why I love drawing them, and I love finding them in books I'm reading. And it's also why I make such an effort to draw and paint maps for my own books. [12]
Favorite Parts
What kind of scenes do you enjoy writing most? I really empathize with the characters, so I find it difficult to write scenes where they experience difficulties. I like to write scenes where people wonder about the world, or where the story reaches a climax. With Murtagh, for example, this is the confrontation at the end of the book. Or the fight with the big fish, Muckmaw. There are also quiet moments that I enjoy writing. Again in Murtagh, when Silna ā€“ the werecat child ā€“ kisses Murtagh's head, that was a very special moment. I like to write things that have meaning and that requires context, so you have to build up to moments that are meaningful, both for myself as a writer and for the reader. [23]
Do you have a favorite moment in the book between Thorn and Murtagh? I have a couple of them. There's a moment after the encounter with Muckmaw when they exchange true names that I quite liked. The end of the Gil'ead sequence. Thorn has an appearance at the end of that sequence, which was rather dramatic. And then right near the end of the book, Thorn gets a crowning moment of awesome, one might say, to use internet speak. But Thorn really, he comes through in a pinch, and I just loved writing that. [32]
What was your favorite scene or moment that you wrote for Murtagh? I'd say the last chapter, and I'm not gonna say why, but I think it's obvious. There's a scene with a creature named Muckmaw, which I quite enjoy. Not just the confrontation with Muckmaw, the aftermath in the water. I was reading Blood Meridian at the time, and I think that influenced my descriptions. And there is a point in the story where something is renamed. And that was a very meaningful scene for me. Also, there's a werecat in the book and I love werecats. They're so much fun to write. [34]
What is your favorite line you've written? The first line I wrote for Murtagh before I had anything really for the book, I thought it was going to be the first line of the book and it ended up being partway through the first chapter, and it was "A man with a dragon is never truly alone." Which since he's an outcast the whole theme of being alone or not alone is kind of relevant. [33]
My favorite good/bad line from Murtagh is: ā€œThe water was like liquid ice.ā€.. . . Yeah, yeah. I know. But you understand what I meant! And thatā€™s the point of writing. Ahahaha!* I didn't notice! just imagined really cold water Canā€™t tell you how many times I stepped into the Yellowstone River and thought: ā€œThis feels like ice! But liquid.ā€ [T]
Providing Context
In the acknowledgments section you said you owe your agent some sushi? Yes! I bet him a sushi dinner, an expensive new York sushi dinner, that I could keep Murtagh under the length of Eragon. And I got close. The first draft was one hundred and sixty eight thousand words long. Eragon is one hundred and fifty six thousand words long. And I figured well I usually drop about ten percent of length in editing, so I thought I'd do that. The problem is I hate over explaining things. I know that sounds incredibly hypocritical based off what I've actually written, but because of my experiences of over explaining things, I've really tried to not do that as much, and so I wrote the book assuming that someone had read the Inheritance Cycle and remembered it. So I didn't explain what a lot of things were because I assumed the reader knew. And my editor came back and said "Christopher, I know what you're doing, but you can't do that. Because someone might pick this up without having read the Inheritance Cycle. And even if someone read the Inheritance Cycle, it's been twelve years. So provide a little context." Well, that ended up being thirty-three thousand words, give or take. So now we're at one hundred and ninety eight thousand words, so I owe my agent a sushi dinner. [17]
It's always interesting to me to see how people do their first chapters in a series. Because I always feel like chapter one is like "previously on..." It's funny. I wrote my latest book with basically no callbacks or explanations of established information. After four books and a million published words, you kind of think people have it under their belt. And my editor came back and she was like, "It's been eleven years since the last book, even if people are fans of the series, you got to give them a little more." So usually when I write a first draft, it drops by about 10% in editing. And with that book, it went up by 33,000 words, which all of it was basically context, which was interesting. So that was a first for me. I'm a kitchen sink author, so I throw everything in and then I usually cut back during editing. [33]
I would love to write books that are more around the length of 100,000 to 150,000 words. Like that's a good, solid length. That's where I was shooting for with Murtagh, but for some reason my editor kept asking me to add more and more stuff so we ended up close to 200,000 words. [1]
Final word count of Murtagh is 198,983 words. So my editor had me ADD about 34,000 words to the book over the course of editing/revising. Ha! That's a first. [T]
Gil'ead Sequence
Interesting choice to break it up into the sections of each city. Just the section in Gil'ead is basically a novel on its own. There's a full arc in Gil'ead that would be a normal size novel for any other writer. I nearly split it into two volumes, actually, there. But my editor said, "no, don't do that". The funny thing about Gil'ead is that actually was not in my original outline. The whole sequence. And the reason is that, for me, I was envisioning a much shorter book. And the whole thing was going to be them going to the village and dealing with Bachel. So let's get to the village as quickly as possible. So we'll just have a chapter or two at the beginning of getting the information. Well, storytelling 101, you can't make it easy for the character. So having Murtagh just be able to go get that information somewhere, find it out, just felt too easy. Also, I kind of locked myself into a little path because the first chunk of the book is reworking the short story from The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm. And at the end of that, Murtagh does not have the information he needs. So he can't get it from the people he interacts with in that chapter, which if I were writing Murtagh as a complete standalone, I could have considered that. So then I thought, "well, he'll go to Gil'ead and we'll have a really quick thing there. And he'll get his information." I started writing it the way I originally envisioned. But again it was too easy. So it was like, "OK. There needs to be a challenge here. What else is going on? How does it tie into my larger world and story?" And it does. There's some unresolved storylines there, but it does tie into the larger stuff I'm going to later. And then it was half the book. Seriously. At the end of the following chapter, right after Gil'ead, is almost perfectly 50% through the book. I'm sure everyone's heard of the three act play, but there's a competing theory of storytelling, which I'm actually very fond of, which is the five act play. So you have two acts at the beginning, two acts at the end, and then your middle act, and then you have an act in the middle. And in that middle act, you have a tipping point where your character sort of sees what they need, or sees what they can become. They ultimately see their own solution to their problems, but then the rest of the back half of the story is them grappling with that solution, coming to terms with it. And that actually worked, it was not intentional, but it worked out perfectly with the structure of this book. The structure of this book is also directly inspired by some of the structuring that I did in my sci-fi novels and I carried some of it back into Alagaƫsia. [11]
In regard of Murtagh or any other part of your work, what's the most intense moment for you during the creative process when you are in the midst of writing a novel? A lot of it is intense. I'm gonna divide it into two sections. The creative process itself, in the sense that where I'm creating the story and the characters and the world. In this case, of course, the world was pretty much in place, but in the outlining phase, I should say, that's a lot of fun. There's some pressure in the sense that I know if I don't get it right in that stage, that no matter how well I write the book, it won't hang together particularly well for the reader. So there's strain in that sense that I really want to get it right. But I wouldn't say there's any real pressure, because there's no deadlines at that point. I'm not actually writing the book. During the writing itself, there's definitely strain and intensity in wanting to get it right and do a good job of writing each individual scene and chapter and storyline. And sometimes that can get difficult, especially if I feel like I'm not really getting where I need to get in terms of the effect on the reader. I had that in a couple places in the first draft with Murtagh. One was with the character Bachel herself, who was quite different in the first draft. And then another one actually was the whole Gil'ead sequence, where my original idea for that sequence is actually what happens now in terms of the werecat kittens and all of that. And then I second guessed myself and thought, "well, maybe that's a little cheesy. Maybe I won't have a ticking clock element to that sequence. So I'm just gonna not have that, but he'll still have these various adventures in order to earn this information from the werecat Carabel." And the problem is it removed any sense of tension from that sequence. So I ended up having to rework a lot of the Gil'ead sequence to reintroduce that element, bring in the tension and make it all work. But both of those things happened in the second chunk, which I was gonna say is revision. And revision and editing tends to be the most intense part of the process, because at that point we're usually under deadline. We've committed to a release date and things are happening on the business side of things, that are sort of like unstoppable forces. The ticking clock in the real world. And that tends to be the most intense part because it's not that I can't do the work, I always can and I always am able to get where I wanna go. I'm not stressed about that, it's just instead of having two months to do something, now you got to do it in two weeks, and oh hey, you got a new baby you got to take care of at the same time. And that's what makes it really intense. [19]
One of the things that I loved about the very first half of this novel is that it is a quintessential RPG action adventure. Because poor Murtagh gets pushed and pulled willingly and unwillingly in the strangest directions. Yeah, he's on the series of fetch quests. It's funny. I've had a bunch of people react differently to that. I've seen people who kind of hate it and really love it, and a lot of people who say, "Well, Christopher's just writing out his D&D session". I literally have never played D&D except for my recent trip down to the Authors in the Dungeon down in Utah. So I don't play D&D. I have no one here to play it with. The only RPGs I've ever played are Skyrim and the Mass Effect series. My logic with that sequence was there was a whole lot we needed to see about Murtagh's back history without rehashing the Inheritance Cycle, without actually going back and rewriting scenes from his point of view. And just doing it all in flashbacks and dreams gets a bit tedious. On top of that, originally that sequence wasn't in the book I was going to write. I was going to start with essentially the opening. And then we were going to go to Nal Gorgoth fairly quickly in the book. But it just made it too easy. No one's going to give them the information for free. There's always a price attached to information. There had to be difficulty in getting it. And then once I was digging into that, I was like, okay, how can I use this to show some aspects of Murtagh's character, and then how will that then get reflected in the second half of the book? And how will that let me inform what happens in the second half of the book? And I really enjoyed that stuff. Muckmaw was a particular favorite of mine. [32]
Thorn
One of the things that we get a lot of in this book that was really wonderful after reading Inheritance, was Thorn's-- we don't really get his POV, but we get some POV through Murtagh of him. I think he only has one line in the entire Inheritance Cycle. In the last book. And we get a lot of him here. And we get a very different Rider-Dragon relationship between him and Murtagh versus Saphira and Eragon. What was the process of crafting that relationship to be similar in its like magical quality, but also different in the fact that they had a very trying kind of hatching? Well that was the key right there. I wanted it to feel different while still maintaining the sense that they'll back each other up no matter what, which they have in the past. That's an important part of that. But Murtagh is kind of a difficult personality himself. Thorn, as we see in the book, of course, had a very, very difficult upbringing under Galbatorix and then later on. And that leaves scars. That leaves marks. So trying to find a way to reflect that in the relationship without having them also just be at each other's throats, because they're not. They are being supportive. But at the same time, it's perhaps an overused word these days, but they have trauma that they are having to battle. [11]
One of my favorite things is the relationship between Murtagh and Thorn--theyā€™re such a lonely duo, but it allows the book to kind of delve into that dragon/rider bond in a new way. What sets their relationship apart do you think? Murtagh and Thorn were joined under the most difficult of circumstances, and that shapes their interactions in a thousand different ways. Their relationship is more, ah, thorny than Eragon and Saphiraā€™s, but they also still love each other and would lay down their lives for one another, should the occasion demand it. I found their interactions really interesting to write. Also, it felt important that I didnā€™t directly replicate Eragon and Saphiraā€™s relationship. Murtagh and Thorn are very different beings, and readers should see that. [15]
What is the relationship between Murtagh and his dragon Thorn? Thorn's egg hatched when they were imprisoned by King Galbatorix. The two friends have been tortured and manipulated. They retain many traumas. They care deeply for each other and are closely bonded. But their relationship is more difficult than that of Eragon and his dragon Saphira. [4]
Claustrophobia
I definitely got choked up with just Thorn and his claustrophobia and how it was written, how it was handled, everything surrounding it. Out of pure curiosity, do you or do someone you know have that kind of claustrophobia that you were able to speak to about? No. A large part of the act of writing is the act of imagination, just like with acting. But even though there's no one in my life who suffers from that, when I'm writing Thorn or anyone who might feel that, I do my best to feel what they're feeling, which is why when writing scenes or a large chunk of a book where perhaps things are difficult for the characters, I have a bad time. Yeah, I hope you take breaks. Yeah, that's where it's good to go play with the kids and take a load off one's mind. But some of the battle scenes in Inheritance really got to me at times, because I'm thinking actually especially in Inheritance, but also in Brisingr, there were some large set pieces, battles. And it just takes a couple of weeks to write sometimes. And that's a long time to have your head in blood and guts. [11]
Bachel
You write so many diverse women in your books that we really enjoy. Between Arya, Angela, Nasuada, Queen Islanzadi, you write fantasy with women in positions of power, with agency and with action. And then we get to this book and we meet this villain, Bachel, and she's basically like, "what if Angela was evil?" I hadn't thought of it that way. I was reading the book. I was like, "Did Christopher Paolini and his sister have a fight? What changed in that relationship?" Because she's awful. So I've watched a lot of movies in my life, and a lot of old movies too. I was thinking of some of the classic actresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood who would come on the screen with a very imperious feel, like Sunset Boulevard or All About Eve or some of those films. And Bachel is sort of in that category of presence. And I think it's exactly what was needed to put Murtagh off balance. I was also thinking of Kai Winn from Deep Space Nine. I've always said that Kai Winn and from Harry Potter the headmistress Umbridge, and Hyacinth Bouquet from the British show Keeping Up Appearances. The three of them in a room together will be like a nuclear explosion. When you were approaching bringing this book from the short story about The Fork into a full novel, at what point did you create this character and where did she come from? I had a general idea before writing Murtagh, of course. I did a lot of plotting and preparatory work, but you never know how a character is going to come across until you write the first draft. And in the first draft, Bachel was not as successful as she is now, I think. I was writing the first draft quickly, and I was thinking of the stories a little bit more of like a Edgar Rice Burroughs style adventures. You go off into the jungle, and you find a hidden temple and lost civilization sort of thing. And as a result, in the first draft, Bachel was much more vampy. I really went hard on that angle. And then looking back over, it's like it didn't work. And it was so cliche and obvious. It was like, yeah, I needed to find another approach. So I kept reworking Bachel with each cycle of revision and it was getting better. The character was getting better and better, but I wasn't fully committing to the change. And it was right at the end of revisions. I mean, we were down to the wire and my editor said, we're still not quite there. And even though I hated to have to have any more work at that point, I knew she was right. So I went in. We're talking with a week to spare before we went to the printers. And I rewrote the first four chapters or so when he gets to the village. I rewrote pretty much every line of dialogue of hers and every description of her to bring it to where we are. And then I was like, "OK, now it works", and my editor agreed. She is terrifying and one of those characters that's not mustache twirly evil, but has so much evil within her. She thinks she can do no wrong, that she is always doing the right thing and that she knows what's best for all the people around her. And as a result is capable of anything. So all of which is to answer your question, her character was an iterative process to get where she needed to go. [11]
I try to imagine what it is to create characters and if some of them have the purpose to be a particular message or stand as a parable for a message or an idea and if yes, what does Bachel mean to you in a deeper way? I think the Bachel to me represents unquestioning belief and also the tyranny of unchecked power and control over people's lives. I think what differentiates Bachel from a real world cult leader, for example, and this actually kind of made it interesting to me, is that the Dreamers and Bachel are rational in the sense that they are believing in something that actually exists. The power that they are in awe of and that they are afraid of and that they worship actually exists. And the same is true of the priests of Helgrind. So in a sense they are not irrational to have that reaction. You might argue it's the wrong reaction. I would argue that they're overdoing it and the reaction is wrong and perhaps even evil, but they have more reason for their belief than a lot of people sometimes do because they have physical evidence on an ongoing basis of their object of worship. But again, Bachel would to me represent unchecked fanatical belief as well as personal exploitation of one's power over others. [19]
The cult experience in the pages of Murtagh eerily echoed in some ways certain experiences I've had with religion. Could you talk about where that part of your writing came from or how you went about writing it? I understand why that comment's anonymous, and I'm going to kind of adhere to that philosophy of anonymity here. Without going into details, I've had some family members who were in a cult at one point. And that occasioned quite a bit of discussion in my life growing up. Although the cult might seem, and probably is, completely over the top and cartoony in some ways, you would be astounded by how much of that was essentially true to life. Let's put it this way, playing Far Cry 5, if anyone's familiar with that, was a distinctly uncomfortable experience for me. So I did whatever I do when I encounter something uncomfortable. I played the game like four times in a row. [34]
No matter how outlandish a belief seems, it can be completely realistic in your world. Especially if you have people committed to it. I've had family members who've been in a cult at one point. That was interesting. So I've had firsthand experience seeing a lot of this stuff in person, and I used some of that in my latest book. [25]
How come Bachel is pronounced like that when itā€™s only one little line away from Rachel? The English language hurts my head. Because itā€™s not from English, and I wanted it to sound different from every other name in the series. [T]
Puce
In Murtagh I have a dragon who's not supposed to be a very nice dragon. I gave him the worst color I could. I have a puce dragon. And mind you, I don't necessarily mind the color itself. It's just for those who don't know, the original definition of the word puce is the color of dried flea blood. So it's a puce dragon. [33]
Traumatic Sequences
What was it like cranking up the anxieties of it, the horrors of it? It feels more mature this time around. Well, good. Murtagh is a more mature character, and he's always had a harder road to walk than Eragon. So, going easy on him was never an option, but it was hard to write. It's hard to put my mind in difficult situations for days on end, weeks on end, months on end when writing and editing. It takes a toll on you emotionally. At least, that's my experience because I empathize with the characters and the world. But at the same time, it's so interesting dramatically that I can't avoid it. Actually [the reason] why I wrote the book was that last chunk of the book. That's what everything leading up to was building and hopefully supporting so that when that hits, you're there going, ā€œOh my god.ā€ [6]
There is a extended period of this book uh that is very traumatic. That is the darkest I think the series ever gets. Where did you find the line? Were there any drafts where you felt like you went too far with that section or where you had to pull it back? Yes. Not a huge amount though. First of all, I throw everything in in my first drafts, kitchen sink, because you can always dial it back, whatever it is. Even if it's a funny scene, it's like I push it as far as I can and then see how it hits the audience. So in the sequence you're talking about, there was one thing in particular I did that I actually don't want to talk about, that I cut out during editing at my editor's very wise advice, and I'm really glad I did. But that was a thing. Because I was like how far can I take this, and that was too far. [11]
Hopefully this is not scaring anyone off from reading Murtagh. No, it's fantastic. And I think just because it is darker doesn't mean it's bad. I think that it's honestly a perfect natural progression from the Inheritance Cycle to this character. I think it's what the character needed. I also don't think it's depressing, ultimately. [11]
Tell me a little about how you see Murtaghā€™s journey in this book. Heā€™s certainly on a much darker road than his half-brother, how was it getting to write a story that has more mature themes? I found it enormously rewarding to write about a character who is both more mature and more complicated than Eragon was for the majority of the Cycle. Especially now that Iā€™m older myself. Dramatically, Murtagh (and Thorn!) presented all sorts of interesting opportunities, and I did my best to take advantage of them in this book. Also, since a lot of my readers have grown up with the series, even as I did, I wanted to give them a book that would satisfy them as much as it will also hopefully satisfy younger readers. [15]
As a fifteen-year-old boy I would never have been able to imagine such a flawed character as a central figure, but I now view life very differently. And you notice that my readers who have grown along with me also see these extra shades of gray. [18]
Murtagh is indeed a more mature book than Eragon. Did you write it that way on purpose? Yes, Murtagh is an older character in the story than he or Eragon were in the first books. He is also a complicated person. And my readers have grown up with me in the meantime. So I felt it was important to write a book where my oldest readers would see my progression as writing, and read about characters they could once again identify with. At the same time, new readers should not be forgotten. That's why I wrote Murtagh in such a way that you can also read it without knowing the previous four books. I wanted to write a book that revolved around the difficult history of Murtagh and Thorn, but was still a fun adventure to read. [23]
If you love this fandom, why are you making us suffer so much with this book? I mean the ending redeems you a little bit but oh my god. I'm sure it's been an emotional rollercoaster for you too. There are parts of the story that are definitely very difficult for Murtagh and Thorn and part of that may be my own predilection for writing that sort of stuff but mostly it was that Murtagh has done some very unpleasant things in the Inheritance Cycle, especially to Nasuada. And he needed to come to terms with that, he needed to grapple that, he needed to face it. And there was no easy path forward for him. If I had done easy on Murtagh I feel like readers would have decided that I was cheating, going easy, and that Murtagh didn't actually have to face the consequences of his actions. Even if he wasn't a hundred per cent responsible for them at the time. I can assure you that, and I'll say this to other fans as well, after this story Murtagh is going to have an easier time of it. This book resolves his personal journey and Thorn's on a really fundamental level, and so life's going to be a little bit easier for Murtagh moving forward. [17]
Uvek
So going to Uvek, you've introduced another Urgal. I think that for a lot of readers, the twist on the Urgals in Eldest. They are not just beastial orcs or Uruk-hai or whatever other franchise does with them, Trollocs for Wheel of Time. They are this sentient race that wants to join the fight on the side of good. I think that that shook me when I first read it. How was it bringing another lead character really from that race into the book? And one of the things I really loved about the book is the scene where they're flying to the village, and they see the village of Urgals. And they're just playing with bows. They're just having a normal day. And he has this moment internally where he's like, "oh, maybe I need to be more inquisitive?" Uvek is one of my favorite characters from the book. I like the Urgal culture. I find it interesting. I wouldn't want to live next to an Urgal village, necessarily, especially since I have kids. But dramatically, creatively, they're really interesting to write about. And trying to balance them in the sense that they're a warrior culture like, we could say, the Klingons. But the Klingons take it to such a degree that realistically, you start asking the question of, how have they survived? How do they build a space-frame civilization when it seems like they tear each other apart super quickly? So with the Urgals, I wanted to show more. And in fact, in The Fork of the Witch and the Worm, the largest of the stories in that is The Worm, which is an Urgal story. And since I was looking at ways of exploring the idea of Murtagh and Thorn's relationship with society, being an outcast, all of that. The Urgals are outcasts in the land also. The other races aren't particularly fond of them. That was a nice connection to bring in and reflect off of Murtagh, so to speak. [11]
Typos
I just got off a very fresh reread of Murtagh. I just sent in typo corrections and a couple little tweaks here and there for the reprints. [32]
You mention in Murtagh that Murtagh's Gedwƫy ignasia is on his right hand, but I think the community assumed it was on his left from Eldest. We're we all wrong or is that a continuity error I found? Typo. Getting fixed in reprints. [T]
Divers
I've seen a couple of questions about this, so -- for the record, "divers" is not a typo of "diverse". (Probably got too clever for my own good, but there you go.) Archaic language in fantasy books?!?! Say it ain't so! The language is half the fun. :D [T]
Not a typo. :D Archaic word. [T]
If this hypothetical typo is ā€œdiversā€ ā€¦ thatā€™s actually the correct word and not a typo. If itā€™s something else, just send a pic and weā€™ll get it fixed in reprints. [T]
CHRIS WHAT IS THIS? An excellent and archaic word. [T]
*sigh* . . . ā€œdiversā€ is a real word. Not a typo (and it doesnā€™t mean those who dive in the water) [T]
I mean, "divers" isn't a typo, so . . . That said, if you do find typos in Murtagh, feel free to tweet them at me. We'll get 'em fixed in reprints. Happens with every book. [T]
Heh. Good thing ā€œdiversā€ is actually a word (and it doesnā€™t mean someone diving into water). [T]
The thing I want to talk to you about today is Twitter drama. You've been getting in tons of fights with readers lately on Twitter. You've been saying some really awful and hateful things to them just because they're pointing out typos in your book. What's the deal with this "divers" typo? Yes, on the first page of Murtagh there's a word "divers", which is an archaic word that means many or a multitude or different things. And too many people think that I'm referring to scuba divers. So it is a fight worth having. You make up fake words all the time. You're a fantasy author. I think the difference here is that you've made up a fake word which also has a real world definition, a person who dives as a sport, and you've put it on the front page of Murtagh without any context clues provided as to how we should interpret this. This is a book that's part of a world that no one has read in more than 10 years. So don't you think that maybe you should apologize to your readers who have waited all this time for a quality product only to be let down by an "archaic" word, aka a typo, on the first page? Absolutely. In fact, I had a conversation with my editor about this before heading out on book tour and we'll be reprinting the books but we're going to translate it all into Pig Latin which should make it more understandable for readers. [31]
Reading Order
I didn't read FWW,should I read it before read Murtagh? I Thought it was a spin-off book. You don't have to read it ... but I would. It acts as a direct lead-in to Murtagh Honestly I'm finding it shocking the number of people who haven't read FWW. There's a solution to that. . . . (Why does that sound mildly threatening?) [T]
Even if you haven't read the other books I think you can certainly enjoy Murtagh as much or even more. [12]
Is Murtagh Book 5 in the story about Eragon/Alagaƫsia? Yes [R]
Murtagh is a direct inline full-length sequel to the series, even though it has a different main character. [1]
I just finished Fractal Noise last night, and when you mentioned in the afterward about another book for a certain Eragon character, I was hoping it would be him. Yeah, I wanted to mention Murtagh on the "Also By" page in Fractal Noise, but we weren't sure if Murtagh was getting announced before Fractal Noise got released to early readers. [T]

2024.05.15 14:24 domanpanda SNO upgrade chain stops at with certificate error. Unable to retreive available updates

First of all im quite familiar with K8s but not Openshift. Yet I need to test the upgrading procedure from 4.8 up to the newest. First i installed oldest available on my old laptop (t470p) - 4.9.17. Then i upgraded it to 4.9.59 (it went smoothly). And then to 4.10.67. Unfortunately one problem popped up - https://access.redhat.com/solutions/6645851
I followed the instructions which fixed it but now i see that i can't upgrade cluster further because of cert error.

2024.05.15 14:07 AnonymousBSCV I had to updateto 17.4.1

I was on 14.6 using dopamine and because of a bank app I had wasnā€™t working, they told me that it was probably because my iPhone was outdated. Since it was an important matter I updated my iPhone to 17.4.1 (which did not fix the problem šŸ™‚ā€ā†•ļø). I was wondering if there was anything I could do besides signing IPAs or just wait forever for a jailbreak to 17.4.1

2024.05.15 13:52 RoganDawes Trying to recover a broken installation

Hi folks. I'm trying to fix a friend's computer (2012 MBP), which failed to boot. I replaced the original spinning rust with an SSD, and installed the latest Catalina as the most recent OS it would run. Then used Migration Assistant to restore from the original hard drive. This all completed without error.
However, when I open Mail, I can see his accounts (3 separate iCloud/IMAP accounts), but a little while later, the accounts disappear. If I exit Mail and restart, I am prompted to add an account or Quit.
If I compare ~/Library/Accounts/Accounts4.sqlite before and after, I see:
find Accounts* -name \*4.sqlite -ls cut -c65- 159744 May 15 11:46 Accounts/VerifiedBackup/Accounts4.sqlite 159744 May 15 11:46 Accounts/Accounts4.sqlite 4096 May 15 08:57 Accounts.bak/Accounts4.sqlite 75857920 May 15 11:37 Accounts.orig/UnverifiedBackup/Accounts4.sqlite 83701760 May 15 11:38 Accounts.orig/Accounts4.sqlite
i.e. the original Accounts/Accounts4.sqlite files are substantially bigger than what ends up a few minutes later after Mail has had a go at them. (I assume it is Mail, I guess it could be some other process?)
Having dumped the contents of each sqlite file to a set of sql statements, I can see the following: sdiff -w 60 <(grep "INSERT INTO" Accounts.orig/Accounts4.sql cut -f3 -d" " uniq -c sort -k2) <(grep "INSERT INTO" Accounts/Accounts4.sql cut -f3 -d" " uniq -c sort -k2) 7 ZACCESSOPTIONSKEY 7 ZACCESSOPTIONSKEY 21 ZACCOUNT 2 ZACCOUNT 192358 ZACCOUNTPROPERTY 2 ZACCOUNTPROPERTY 51 ZACCOUNTTYPE 54 ZACCOUNTTYPE 41 ZDATACLASS 34 ZDATACLASS 12 Z_1OWNINGACCOUNTTYPES 12 Z_1OWNINGACCOUNTTYPES 26 Z_2ENABLEDDATACLASSES 1 Z_2ENABLEDDATACLASSES 49 Z_2PROVISIONEDDATACLASS 5 Z_2PROVISIONEDDATACLASS 102 Z_4SUPPORTEDDATACLASSES 104 Z_4SUPPORTEDDATACLASSES 39 Z_4SYNCABLEDATACLASSES 40 Z_4SYNCABLEDATACLASSES 1 Z_METADATA 1 Z_METADATA 1 Z_MODELCACHE 1 Z_MODELCACHE 7 Z_PRIMARYKEY 7 Z_PRIMARYKEY
i.e. the bulk of the size difference appears to be located in entries in the ZACCOUNTPROPERTY table, but those are mostly (hex-encoded) binary blobs.
Does anyone have any details as to the structure of this database? Anything that could give me a pointer as to why this file has got so large, what I can try to delete to bring it down to a manageable size, or a way in which I can see the details of the accounts previously existing on this computer?
