2024.06.09 07:16 WhoWouldCareToAsk LGA 1200 motherboard, or…?

Current PC specs (bought from BestBuy back in 2021; sorry, don’t know PSU and case details):
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/XhHCRK
This PC is used for 1080p gaming.
Main complaint: I cannot use PCIe slot to install PCIe x8 NVMe SSD (non-video card slots are PCIe x1; x8 card doesn’t work), so without a doubt the motherboard must go.
This takes me two separate ways, and I need help choosing between them:
1) upgrade motherboard to a better LGA 1200 variant (newer chipset), reuse everything, add the NVMe SSD now, upgrade PSU, GPU, and CPU when budget allows.
2) look into getting a motherboard with a better socket for better processors (either Intel or AMD), get a better CPU now, and build off of that as budget permits.
Any advice is appreciated. 😇

2024.06.09 05:14 Megazord552 1080p Gaming PC for 2025 releases + productivity [Ryzen 9 7900X3D] New build or upgrade? New Existing parts/monitors to reuse? None PC purpose? Gamine, Solidworks Purchase country? India, has Micro Center

New build or upgrade? New Build
Existing parts/monitors to reuse? Peripherals - Dell E2420HS, 60Hz, Logitech G502 mouse, Redragon Vara K551 RGB
PC purpose? Monster Hunter Wilds, Remnant 2, Dragons Dogma 2, Hitman, Solidworks, Machine learning, data processing
Purchase country? Near Micro Center? India, has Micro Center
Monitors needed? No, but will take recommendations
Budget range? (Include tax considerations) (including currency): 1,20,000 - 1,75,000 Indian Rupees (+ 18% tax) (Approximately 1500 USD - 2000 USD)
WiFi or wired connection? Primarily Wifi
Size/noise constraints? lower noise is better. Standard ATX Case.
Cololighting preferences? Case - black/tempered glass. Lights: White > None > RGB
This is going to be my first dedicated PC build. I am moving from an aging Asus ROG gaming laptop with an Nvidia 960M, so its going to be a substantial upgrade for me.
I dont have a lot of experience putting together builds outside of watching copius amounts of youtube videos. I have a tendency to pick components with the highest number, but cant always justify why. These may be places where I can save money. I also have no dea about choosing between brands anf their different products.
My priority for gaming is performance. I am satisfied gaming at 1080p. I am not that discerning when it comes to resolution. I have the basic peripherals so I can focus my budget more on PC parts.
I have no RGB requirement. In order of preference: black with white lights/accents, no lights, RGB
My location can get quite hot and dusty and can experience some unexpected power outages (i will be using a UPS to handle this).
Right now, I am putting together a list of components that would consititute a good build. I then need to shop around for good deals.
I plan on using this sytem for 5+ years minimum before considering upgrades. I dont have any plans to stream. but I would like to know what would be needed if i were to stream in the future.
My plan currently is to build around an AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D since my priority was gaming, performance. I have no alliegance to AMD, but I like what the X3D offers.
I debated between the 7800X3D and 7900X3D and setttled on the 7900 since I want to use this PC for more than gaming like, 3D CAD and programming.
(I am amenable to change this if compelled)
I have my eyes on the MSI X760E Gaming + Wifi motherboard. It seems to have all the features I really need: AM5 socket, adequate expansion slots, storage and front IO, support for watercooling. This is the lowest end X670E board I have seen, but I am open to other options. I settled on X670E after a brief read online, but I dont have a better reason for selecting it other than it had more PCIe lanes. I suspect I can go with a B650 even since I dont have plans on overclocking at the moment.
Watercooling would be nice for the environment I am in, but I need a suggestion for a suitable AIO that I can use with this system.
I will admit, I have no idea how to select RAM beyond knowing the capacity and the generation. I am looking at 32 GB (2x16) DDR5 memory, but have no idea what speed, and what brand. (What is the difference between all the RAM on the market anyways?)
For storage, I am thinking for one M.2 SSD and one SATA SSD
The big decision I have now is the graphics card. I dont know how to play this. The PSU and the Case rely on this selection. I genuinely have no clue where to go on this.
I want it to be futureproof (up to the nest 5 years approximately), and I think my limit on 1080p can give me a few options. I don't have a preference between AMD or Nvidia, just need some good suggestions here.
For the PSU cand case, I am yet do the math on that. I wanted to look into it once I had the other components figured out. The system integrators here have a selection of Ant Esports, Phanteks, NZXT and Lian Li cases, I believe I could also buy those cases independently if I look around.
I am looking to buy these items piecemeal over a period of a few months. I am expecting some deals in a couple of months, and the more towards the end of the year. I dont mind going to an integrator, but I want the experience of putting it together myself.
Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

2024.06.09 04:19 Aggravating-Reply870 Suspected Motherboard Failure, or Not

hello, the motherboard in question is an older gen LGA1151 socket MSI Z370 Pro AC Carbon, for all intents and purposes it's working as intended. However, the MSI RX580 GPU apparently stopped working, though seems to work after being transferred to another PCI-E slot.
That's unfortunately not where the story ends. After that, I cannot get a video signal from the GPU nor from the integrated GPU, just a black screen for both.
I've replicated this with another known functioning GPU of the same make/model and the same issue exists regardless of PCI-E port.
Does this sound like the motherboard is on it's way out, or maybe it points towards something in BIOS which can be changed? I really don't know. Most of the posts/replies online about this issue are very basic and completely unhelpful - e.g. wiring, is the GPU seated correctly, PSU not powerful enough (mine is and has worked previously with this configuration without changes) it's a Thermaltake 550W PSU, clear CMOS etc.
Nothing thus far has resolved it, open to suggestions

2024.06.09 01:53 sunward_Lily Solid Red CPU LED- Part 2 (Original post in comments)

Here is a link to my first post.
In the first post I was able to get the computer to boot up, at least temporarily, pretty consistently.
Since then, I've replaced the CMOS battery with a brand new one, I've switched to a different CPU (that was known good last time it was in the computer but that was years ago). I've taken the PC completely apart and gave it an even deeper cleaning than before, then breadboxed the minimum necessary components outside of the case. I've also tried doing the USB BIOS boot/flash utilizing the BIOS button on the rear of the motherboard (and yes, I used the most recent Bios file for the Sabretooth 990FX revision 2 plugged into the correct USB port on the motherboard).
Unfortunately, the issue has gotten worse. The computer no longer boots up sometimes- as soon as I hit the power button, the CPU LED goes solid red and stays that way. I'm out of known-good components to test.
None of the pins in the CPU slot look bent. There was some old thermal paste on the plastic CPU socket but it didn't appear to have gotten into the pinholes. I cleaned it anyway but to no avail.

2024.06.09 01:08 wolviesaurus Review of my Necropolis SCSSF builds

I don't know if I'm quite ready to quit the league entirely yet, but I'm sure I won't make a completely new build until the next league so I figured I should voice my thoughts on my league journey for anyone who cares to listen. This is my second 40/40 league and I've put way more time into this league than any other by a decent margin, including Sanctum which was my first 40/40 and I'll try to explain why because I'm not sure I fully know why myself. I've been an SSF player since Ultimatum league and any and all thoughts voiced here are from this perspective.
The league started as a hot mess, I was very lukewarm to it. Lots of heavyhanded balancing swings but most of those had little impact on SSF, with the significant rework of the Graveyard crafting mechanic after the first week it turned into one of the most overpowered mechanics we've ever seen, easily on par with Harvest and Recombinators. This opened up the build space in SSF wider than we've ever seen and together with the great QoL-ening this patch, SSF players are eating good. Thus, here are the characters I've put together on my journey to once again dunk on uber bosses and to conquer the new beast that was Back To Back Basics T17 maps.
Prelude on this list is my starter that I didn't finish to any satisfying degree, Armageddon Brand of Recall Saboteur. I will not provide a PoB for this character because there's nothing to see, I hated every aspect of the build. Triggerbots are utterly unreliable for any setup that deals damage around the bots themselves. As an avid Summoner player (as you'll see), I can say Triggerbots have the most infuriating AI I've ever had to deal with. There is impressive damage potential here for sure, but it simply turned out to be a terrible choice as a starter, especially in SSF.
It did however allow me to setup for a second character, so onwards to the builds actually worth showing:

One of my favorite skills in the game and definitely my favorite use of said skill. I love my little heatseeking undead missiles. Now, it's not the best build by any means, it's got mediocre clear, delayed damage and with the new(ish) Transfigured setup, some awkward piloting with Unleash support, it's got it's quirks. Still, this build managed to clear all T17 maps and down all ubers albeit in a dirty fashion with many portals falling to collateral damage. It's greatest badge of honor was the ability to actively stun uber bosses out of long animations, including Uber Shapers Beam and Uber Sirus Everlasting Fire charge-up.
Potential upgrades: The simplest and biggest upgrade to the build would easily be a beneficially corrupted Diallas chest, potentially pumping up the gem level by and additional 4. You could get three Grand Spectrum for +90% Crit Multi which would be very noticable since crit modifiers are hard to come by for minions. The theoretically best way to build Popcorn in my mind currently (at least in terms of damage) will be using Qotra's Regulator and Necromantic Aegis, this frees up your amulet slot for either a Replica Dragonfang or an Ashes of the Stars, I do think Ashes is the best option simply because levels have diminishing returns over quality at a certain point. This way will however sacrifice a lot of defense, but maybe you can reach block cap anyway with Necromantic Aegis.
2. Tawhoa Shaman Spectre Necromancer - https://pobb.in/efYfyYOXNXv6
My goal when I started out the league was to farm a Wraithlord and use it for it's intended purpose and make a proper Spectremancer once again, a summoner archetype I haven't touched since Redemption Sentries in Harvest League. I'm happy to say with this new helm and some borderline cheating from Allflames, Spectremancer is back baby, at least for a moment. The most popular choice this league was using Wretched Defilers (as shown by Ghazzy) but I chose Tawhoa Shamans because on paper they looked to have better single target, being poison projectile based with 100% poison chance by default. Turns out this was true. I was using a single Spectral Leader at times but that one is so damn squishy it often died during T17 maps.
This character turned into my workhorse that cleared B2B T17's and ubers pretty comfortably. Aegis is definitely my favorite defensive unique in the game.
Tawhoa Shamans sport a spellbased Poisonous Concoction ability with innate 100% poison chance and an AoE explosion allowing for multiple projectiles to shotgun (Minion Offence Mastery and Plaguebringer did make noticable impact to this). The base damage of this isn't particularily high which leads me to think Covenant and Envy provides significant damage, but they are not implemented in PoB so all I got is my personal experience. I experimented with using Vile Toxins over GMP, it felt ok but overall GMP definitely felt like superior damage. The greatest problem with Tawhoa Shamans are their default AI, they sit somewhere between Zombies and Skeletons in terms of aggressiveness. Attaching my offering-brand was enough to make them go to work though. This leads me to the next section.
Potential upgrades: Obligatory Amanamu's Gaze mention, I despise this jewel with my very soul, I've tried to farm if many times in SSF and simply won't give. That said, the absolute best suite of upgrades you could possibly do to this character is a crafted wand with the Delve mod "Minions Are Aggressive" combined with an Envy Aul's Uprising. This will provide the minions with some well needed fire in their butts, and could possibly even provide socket space for a Transience Spectre with Feeding Frenzy (tech in Ghazzy's 3.24 spectre video). Finally, a +2 Minion gems Covenant would be a noticable upgrade but I'm sure they already hit DoT cap as is.
I truly hope we will have access to the TotA mobs in the future, if not I fear Spectremancer will go back to being a C tier choice for summoners, I don't think Wretched Defilers are up to the task.
3. Void Battery Hierophant (Lightning Conduit of the Heavens) - https://pobb.in/k7KP3OXIUrGP
This and the next build served as some diversions and/or palette cleansers because at this point I had amassed quite a lot of high tier uniques and the means to level new characters really quickly so I will likely be brief. I got two Void Batteries back to back in short succession (a few days tops) so I decided to make one of the more niche Archmage builds available. Turns out LCotH is an amazing clear skill, just click and the entire screen dies, Crit Archmage delivered single target as well so this was a great T16 mapper. I built squishy and I felt it, not much else to say there.
Potential upgrades: Simply better rares and a full Adorned setup will likely produce a thundergod of a character that can speedclear T17s. Extra power charges wherever they can be found.
4. Triple Charge Stacker Slayer (Cold Snap of Power) - https://pobb.in/RSi1lS2ynkx7
At this point in the league I had amassed all the necessary components for a charge stacker together with a decent Adorned jewel so I decided to pull the trigger. I spent some time looking at what skill to use and since I didn't want to play Penance Brand again and I absolutely hate both Blade Vortex and Winter Orb with a passion I turned to Cold Snap of Power as inspired by Mathil. I tried justifying Creeping Frost instead but Cold Snap just looked better in every aspect. This became a very fun character, also very good at blasing T16s similar to the Hierophant. However I did not anticipate the awkwardness of Cold Snap and charge consumption which ultimately turned me off the build pretty quickly.
Potential upgrades: Awakened Spell Cascade and a Replica Restless Ward. At the time I had not touched Heist and I had that Brass Dome with some white sockets thanks to some Omens so I just used that. Otherwise lean even more into Adorned, better jewels and better clusters.
5. Energy Blade CoC Blazing Salvo Inquisitor - https://pobb.in/P75AesG0IaJP
This was my endgame creation this time around, the kind of build you look at and thing "yeah that's not SSF friendly at all". Very little creativity from my part in terms theorycrafting, plenty of help from CaptainLance's videos and just shameless stealing from Ninja, but actualcrafting is all my own. It's been a very satisfying journey to craft Adorned magic jewels, 8 socket passives, farming and corrupting unique items and so on. It's also my first time ever playing a CoC build and while I think the EB + Ivory Tower + Rathpith is carrying a lot of the damage, my god it just spews out spells at a rate that selfcast could never come close to. Combining this all with a shotgunning spell like Blazing Salvo with Returning Projectiles and Snipers Mark turn to some truly disgusting damage when everything overlaps. This Energy Blade setup is truly wonderful in the sense it's a generic blueprint for any crit spell you could care to play, it handles base damage, increases, crit strikes and enemy res before even considering main gem links. CoC solves cast rate as well. Truly disgusting.
Potential upgrades: Fuck you Heist.
Going from my extremely tanky Necromancer to this gave me a healthy perspecive on defensive stats. While the Necro was much slower in terms of clearspeed, I realized it could handle most of the nasty T17 mods even in a B2B setup without caring too much. This Inquisitor just shat on the ubers in a way I haven't experienced before which was kinda what I wanted but at the same time I did feel some limitations when playing T17s. It was very much a kill-or-be-killed build with some leeway thanks to the ES pool, but it certainly folded in situations where my Necro would just laugh. I'm sure in trade you can pump up the damage output to a level where you don't care about anything.
All in all, I think the reason I stuck to this league is the subtle but massive endgame rework in scarabs, Atlas trees and T17's. We have never seen such freedom of choice and availability when it comes to what content you wanna farm in SSF, the build space has never been so vast. I still have ideas in my head that I would wanna try, but I think I'm burned out enough in this league. I'm sitting on a perfectly rolled Ashes of the Stars and I wanna try Double Strike of Momentum quality stacking (server tick memes?), but I poofed my Diallas chest so I'll table that indefinitely.
If you made it this far, *fist bump* homie.
Feel free to roast my stuff!

2024.06.08 20:36 Megazord552 1080p Gaming build for 2025 releases [Ryzen 7900X3D]

Budget (including currency): 1,20,000 - 1,75,000 Indian Rupees (Approximately 1500 USD - 2000 USD)
Country: India
Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Monster Hunter Wilds, Remnant 2, Dragons Dogma 2, Hitman, Solidworks, Machine learning, data procesing
Peripherals - Dell E2420HS, 60Hz, Logitech G502 mouse, Redragon Vara K551 RGB

2024.06.08 18:33 StokFlame Marinco 12-24v DC Plug Wiring

Marinco 12-24v DC Plug Wiring
I have a 12/24v marinco 2013BP-24. I will attach pictures to explain better my issue.
I went from a 12v trolling motor to a 24v. The way I understand this plug is id just switch my 12v positive connection to the 24v connection.
The jumper is in the switch as you can see the metal bar, but it is in the 12v slot. Can anyone tell me if this was modified by someone/the jumper bar moved?
When I put my positive from the motor into 24v I get no power. When I plug it into 12v I get power, but it feels severely underpowered. I had a 55lb thrust on before and it would pull my boat at 2 mph. This I can hardly break 1.6. I feel like this jump cable should be on the 24v socket, but I cannot find any pictures.

2024.06.08 17:00 ikeaidk ls cannot access '/dev/serial/by-id/': No such file or directory

Hello, I have a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W and an Ender 3 S1 3D printer. The Ender 3 S1's motherboard model is STM32F401, and I want to install Klipper on this printer. I have installed the 32-bit version of MainsailOS on the Raspberry Pi Zero 2W. I removed the monitor part of the 3D printer and tried to flash it via the SD card (I also tried flashing from the SD card slot under the monitor). However, no matter what I do, I can never run the ls /dev/serial/by-id command on PuTTY, even though the Raspberry Pi Zero 2W is connected to the printer's Type-C socket. Thank you in advance for your help.

2024.06.08 08:09 grandtouring72 FYI: You can use the 12V Accessory/Cigarette lighter socket circuits for dash cam wiring, no need to run circuits to the fuse box behind the driver's seat (Album inside)

Album: https://imgur.com/a/PQytwrj
Install was fairly simple once I figured out which circuits were switched vs always hot. The 12V accessory socket switches on with the car, so it's perfect for dash cams or radar detectors. It's already fused so no need to run an additional inline fuse on the 5V dash cam hardwire kit. To prevent rattles, wrap the dash cam 5V converter with some cushion tape (such as Coroplast 833 MPX) then fasten in the console area with a zip tie. Secure the USB cable along the lower passenger side instrument panel area with zip ties or wire harness tape (Tesa 51036 is what I used). Side note: I work in automotive wiring and quite frankly after seeing the wire harness designs behind the trim panels, I can see why some McLarens have so many electrical issues. The layout of the modules and harness routing in the console area violates quite a few best practices in automotive engineering. I've seen worse, but it's pretty obvious that the best engineers at McLaren are the chassis guys and not the wire harness guys lol.
Photo 1) Routing of USB Cable
Photo 2) How to remove Passenger kick panel fuse box cover
Photo 3) Once panel is removed, pull the center console side trim piece, there are 3 clips holding it in place
Photo 4) 12V accessory plug connector, yellow is KLR (ACC), brown is ground. The connector pulls straight out towards the front of the car, there's no latch on the connector. Use some T-tap electrical connectors to tap into these circuits.
Photo 5) Passenger kick panel fuse box diagram - all of these are KL30 (+B) in case an always on circuit is needed, plenty of spare slots. Use a piggyback fuse holder if you need an always on circuit.

2024.06.08 06:29 abusementparkk My PC won't boot or get power when the GPU power cables are plugged in.

Recently, I relocated my PC and cleaned the inside of it. When I set everything up and turned it on, it only stayed on for 2-3 seconds and then reset. This process kept repeating until I unplugged the power cable. After I unseated and reseated every component, the system suddenly turned on and worked fine until I launched a game. The first two times, the GPU just stopped displaying and its fans went to full speed while idling. The last time I tried, a very harsh sound came from the case (I'm not 100% sure, but it was probably the GPU), and the PC turned off.
Now I can't turn on my PC when the GPU is plugged in with the PSU cable. It's okay when the GPU is seated in the PCIe slot, but when I plug in the PSU cable to the 8-pin socket, the system never boots up. I am so confused about which component is faulty in this case. It looks like the PSU might be the issue, but I can use my PC with integrated graphics just fine without the GPU. I'm thinking of taking my GPU to a repair shop to check if there are any shorts on it. What are your opinions?

2024.06.07 20:00 ryanemmerson need help. PC build not posting and has red error LED (DRAM) on motherboard

So i’m building my first PC and can’t figure out what’s causing it to signal a memory issue. The RAM sticks were in the correct slots for the MB at first, but i’ve tried switching them around, only using one, and swapping them out to no avail. I did make sure they were fully clicked on everytime and that they are compatible with the MB (I got the CPU, motherboard, and RAM in a microcenter bundle). I’ve tried reseating the CPU and the graphics card and loosening the cooler a little bit. I’ve tried flashing the BIOS to the most updated version and leaving it on to boot for about 10 minutes… but no post (I do have the hdmi in the graphics card) and red light still on. After that I tried clearing the CMOS and still red light. I’m not sure what to do anymore and feel like i’m gonna mess something up trying more. The only things I can think of are that there’s bent or missing pin on the motherboard’s AM5 socket (when i first opened it up and looked at it I noticed a tiny gap in the array of pins which scared me, but i decided to just continue cause I figured it could be normal) or that the RAM sticks or CPU just don’t work somehow. Hoping it’s not one of those things and there’s something I can do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

2024.06.07 19:49 agenciabeauty Setup in a miscellaneous laptop

Greetings!
Introduction
I have an old laptop, which I tried to upgrade its wireless card from an AC3160NGW to an AX210NGW, and I had some problems with this, which, so far, I concluded it is due to some BIOS whitelist constraint. The whole process was documented here and here. And yes, I certifed that my OS distro and version contained the proper drivers.
After taking some hours searching for BIOS mods with its whitelist deactivated, I noticed that my machine is quite old and specific, to the point of not being able to find a BIOS for my case. Therefore, I concluded that relying on coreboot or libreboot, may be suitable strategies for solving my problem, although not sure which one is the most suitable. That is why I decided to come here.

ATIC: Core Set Kickstarter - Fan Recommendation
I posted about this the other day and someone suggested this subreddit may be interested too.
I came across this game at the UK Games Expo this past weekend and fell in love with it while play testing. It's a Choose Your Own Adventure book with board game elements, and I have never been more excited about the concept of solo gaming. The creator was passionate, and described how his partner created a gritty world for film and he is adapting it along a more pulp-y line for the game. He is already adding more planets to explore (we beta tested the second planet) to create a series.
We backed it on Kickstarter instantly, and now I'm hoping that I can help more people discover it (selfishly, so that I can get my hands on it).
ATIC: Core Set Kickstarter
I am not in any way associated with the creators, just very excited and enthusiastic about the game. Picture stolen/lovingly borrowed from the Kickstarter for attention.
