2024.06.10 17:45 haveagooddieinc Roommate to occupy 1/1 inside 4/2 house in Aurora

Hello again. I am looking for a cool individual who’s looking for a new place to live. The location is a house in southeast Aurora. This is to occupy 1 master bedroom with bathroom right outside the bedroom. You may have seen this listing in the past. This is now a 1/1 for 1000 per month plus internet and 60/40 split on power.
Location at corner of Hampden and Buckley. Will provide address if we schedule showing.
Your room is the biggest bedroom in the house with a walk-in closet. I live / work in the basement suite. We would share the kitchen, living room with wood burning fireplace and back porch. The laundry is downstairs which has my studio / screening room which I do some of my work from. There is a 2 car garage but with my work equipment we can’t park cars inside and I need access to driveway to load equipment. However, plenty of storage for bikes / sports equipment with an air compressor for tires and street parking.
I just moved in a month ago so I don’t really have a lot of furniture upstairs so what you bring will be welcomed. I will be slowly adding more furniture to the rest of the house.
This house is close to a lot of food options, 1 block away from Target, Dutch Brothers and multiple King Soopers. 25 min to DTC. 35 min from DIA. 25 min to downtown Denver.
About me: I’m a male 45 year old web developer / event producer who creates a wide variety of fun, interactive programming. I operate a very unique events business and work from the home. This is the reason garage and driveway parking is limited.
I have a small 8lb dog and with the space we probably have room for another furry friend.
Fenced in backyard with patio. Minimal yard maintenance with no grass to cut.
The landlord is awesome and I have been his tenant at another property for over 3 years now. He would need an application fee and a new 12 month lease will be created for both of us when you sign.
Rent is $1000 includes water.
We will split internet and work out a percentage with the power.
Available now. Please use form so I can keep track of things. If you have gotten this far I look forward to hearing from you. https://forms.gle/DL63QgB7Cq91RikV6

2024.06.10 17:42 kaelinsanity Question about 2019 Kia Soul, spun rod bearing, no KSDS update

A customer of mine spun a rod bearing in a 2019 Soul 2.0, 80k miles, second owner, no KSDS update was performed. I believe I've seen posts here where people have said that they were able to get their engine replaced even though they didn't get the update, but I'm not having luck advocating for my customer so far, and I'd like some help/advice.
I called the Kia customer hotline referenced in the class action lawsuit, and am waiting on a call back from a supervisor. However, the first customer service rep said that they are unable to do anything because the lawsuit says they aren't permitted (lol, wut?) to repair a vehicle that hasn't had the KSDS update. (in reality, it just says that they aren't required to do anything under the lawsuit, it doesn't bar them from repairing it for the satisfaction of a customer.) I (personally) own a 2011 Sorento 2.4, (also part of the class action) and less than a month ago I received the first and only KSDS update letter I've ever gotten. It just seems strange to me that this is a requirement because people had been experiencing this failure prior to the update even existing, and they've (I assume) been compensated for an engine replacement, or had their engine repaired. Further, the KSDS update isn't even classed as a recall, and it's not something that shows up via carfax, which was what my customer used to check that the car was current when he bought it. I point this out because the customer service rep I spoke to, at one point said that my customer should have "done research" before purchasing the vehicle and he wouldn't have been in this situation. As a tech, I get what he's saying, as a human, I'm irritated that Kia's rep made that assertion. Bad form. Meh.
TLDR; I think I've seen posts (or replies) from people claiming to have gotten the engine replacement warranty for a spun rod bearing without having performed the KSDS update here on Reddit. Is there a magic phrase, or special person at Kia to contact in order to get this done?

2024.06.10 17:42 BlackRoseLT1 What do I do now?

I’m 21m in the middle of Oklahoma. I’m going into my junior year of college pursuing a degree in finance (100% online). Currently I work full time for a local eye dr as an optometric technician, but for a number of reasons I think it’s time to move on toward something that I could maybe make a career out of and use my degree in once I get it.
I looked into selling cars since I have a decent interest in them, but I don’t think I could handle the environment with my current school schedule and I don’t want to cut back on school.
My only work history is I spent aug 2019-Feb 2023 at Walmart as a cashier and then I’ve been at this eye dr ever since. I feel so burnt out and lost and it seems like every application I put in through indeed goes nowhere. So what now? Where should I look? What sort of jobs are out there for someone like me that I may not be considering? I’ve been looking for months and just need some fresh eyes on my situation. Thanks

The Apes’ Revolt: A Tale of the GameStop Saga

Prologue: The Age of Despair

In the distant realm of Finaancia, a world intertwined with magic and the relentless pursuit of wealth, there existed a powerful cabal known as the Hedge Lords. These sorcerers of finance had mastered the dark arts of manipulation, using their powers to amass unimaginable riches while draining the lifeblood of the common folk. Their leader, Lord Hedginax, was the most ruthless of them all, using spells to bet against the success of thriving villages, driving them into ruin for his gain.
Among the oppressed were the Apes, a clan of ordinary people bound by a common cause. The Apes had grown weary of watching their livelihoods crumble at the hands of the Hedge Lords. They yearned for a hero to rise and lead them against their oppressors. That hero emerged in the form of a young ape named Roark, a visionary with a heart ablaze with the spirit of rebellion.

Chapter 1: The Call to Arms

Roark had always been different from the other apes. While his peers toiled in the fields and mines, Roark spent his days in the ancient library of Finaancia, pouring over forbidden tomes and studying the history of the Hedge Lords. One day, he stumbled upon a prophecy that spoke of a mystical stock, a relic from the past known as GameStop. The prophecy foretold that if the Apes could rally behind GameStop and hold steadfast, they could break the Hedge Lords' grip on the realm and bring about their downfall.
Filled with newfound purpose, Roark called a secret council of the Apes. They gathered in a hidden grove under the light of a full moon, where Roark shared his discovery. The Apes were skeptical but desperate for change. Roark's passion and conviction ignited a spark within them, and they pledged to follow him on this perilous journey.

Chapter 2: The Great Acquisition

The Apes embarked on a quest to gather as many GameStop shares as possible. They pooled their resources, each contributing what little they had. From the youngest ape, who offered his meager savings, to the elder who sacrificed her cherished heirlooms, every contribution was a testament to their unity and determination.
As word spread, more Apes joined the cause. They took to the mystical realm of the Interweb, a vast network of knowledge and communication, to spread their message and rally support. The movement grew, with Apes from distant lands uniting under the banner of GameStop. The Hedge Lords watched in disbelief as the price of GameStop shares soared, threatening their dark schemes.

Chapter 3: The Battle of Wall Street

Enraged by the audacity of the Apes, Lord Hedginax summoned his most powerful allies to counter the uprising. They unleashed an onslaught of dark magic, manipulating the market and spreading fear and doubt among the Apes. The Hedge Lords used every trick in their grimoires to crush the rebellion, but the Apes held firm.
Roark knew that to win this battle, they needed more than just shares; they needed hope and resilience. He spoke to the Apes through enchanted scrolls, urging them to hold the line. "We are not just fighting for ourselves," he proclaimed, "we are fighting for future generations, for a world free from the tyranny of the Hedge Lords!"
The Apes, inspired by Roark's words, stood their ground. Despite the relentless assault, they refused to sell their shares. The Hedge Lords' dark magic began to wane as their losses mounted. The once-invincible cabal now found themselves vulnerable, their power slipping through their fingers.

Chapter 4: The Fall of the Hedge Lords

In a final, desperate bid to save their dominion, Lord Hedginax summoned a colossal storm of dark energy, intending to obliterate the Apes' holdings in a single stroke. But Roark, now a seasoned leader, had anticipated this move. He had forged alliances with other oppressed clans, who lent their strength and magic to counter the storm.
A titanic clash ensued, the skies ablaze with the fury of the battle. The Apes and their allies poured every ounce of their willpower into the struggle. As the storm raged, Roark led a daring assault on the heart of the Hedge Lords' fortress, confronting Lord Hedginax in a duel of epic proportions.
With a surge of pure determination, Roark struck down the dark lord, shattering his staff of manipulation and breaking the spell that bound the realm. The storm dissipated, and the Hedge Lords, bereft of their leader and power, were vanquished.

Epilogue: A New Dawn

The fall of the Hedge Lords marked the dawn of a new era in Finaancia. The Apes, now hailed as heroes, worked tirelessly to rebuild their villages and restore prosperity to the land. GameStop became a symbol of their victory, a testament to the power of unity and resilience.
Roark, though weary from the battle, found solace in the knowledge that they had secured a brighter future for generations to come. The Apes had proven that even the mightiest of oppressors could be brought low by the collective strength of ordinary people.
As the sun rose over the liberated realm of Finaancia, the Apes celebrated their hard-won freedom, knowing that they had changed the course of history. The legend of their revolt would be told for centuries, a timeless reminder that when united in purpose, even the humblest of beings could defy the mightiest of foes.

2024.06.10 17:31 the_european_eng Let's collect salaries before and after taxes for devs in Europe

And saving rates, anonymously.
I made a Google Form to collect this data, such that we can have a more granular view into how developers across Europe are doing financially.
Not just salary wise (which in my opinion is a bit of dry number and not that useful, considering the huge impact taxes and cost of living have on one's personal finance), but also in terms of lifestyle, family size (number of dependants), and yearly savings (money left in the bank account or investments at the end of the year after all the taxes and expenses).
Here's the link to the form: https://forms.gle/3peXTdxFXyvuzR386
Here's the link to view the results: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iTNwiAQ0s5iD6RqI7B30uWqQ8wNJqRnmHvxo5zRffu8
I welcome you to share this posts and/or the form above such that we all get more data!

Kasoku Sentai BoonDOOMger Part 2: Doom Cars
So yesterday I made drawings of what Taiya and Bundorio could've looked like if they were from a Universe where they became evil. Well I imagine in that universe the Boon Cars are still created, although in this world they are known as the Doom Cars! (prior warning, I suck at drawing cars)
Taiya, The Deliveryman of Doom, controls Doom Trailer (A form which Evil Bundorio takes on), Doom Medieval and Doom Speeder. In their Attack modes they become Kasoku Calibur and Kasoku Hellfire.
Chashiro, The Data Theif, controls Doom Off-Road (Yes his and Mira's don't get different names). In it's Attack Mode it becomes the Kasoku Flat Head.
Mira, The Road Rager, controls Doom Wagon. In it's Attack Mode it becomes the Kasoku Gauntlet.
Jou, The Criminal, controls Doom Getaway and Doom Heist. In Their Attack Mode they become the Kasoku Shredders and Kasoku Pistols.
Genba, The Reaper, controls Doom Smash and Doom Tank. In their Attack Mode they become the Kasoku Launcher and Kasoku Crusher.
I will draw all their combinations soon, and for why there's no Evil Marine and Safari, honestly just haven't figured them out yet lol

I’ve been applying for a J3 using my J2 resume as J1 is super niche and there’s literally no room to OE in that industry. I also bought a new car last year, while OE-ing, for which I put down J1s info for financing. This is a totally new J1 from when I started J2 initially. So my resume reads old J1 - date of J2 (but I didn’t actually stop J1), then actual dates of J2.
My TWN and credit is frozen, but I’m not sure if my new J1s info is going to pull forward as part of the background/credit check. Anyone know?

2024.06.10 17:29 nmeowed Higher income doesn't equate to a well-off life

I am earning more now. I am happy and grateful, but at the same time conscious and confused kung saan papunta ang financial plans ko bc I don't exactly know what I want for myself.
I micromanage my finances. I set financial goals - short term and long term. I cut 30% of my monthly salary for my savings - for emergency fund and planned investment fund. Pero I still get stressed from time to time when I overspend for things I don't allot budget for.
I hate to admit that I want to experience new things, to explore more - but it will require me to spend money. I will be happy to have new experiences, but at the end of the day, when I tracked my expenses, I get frustrated.
And as I visit again my long term plans, I hate to feel like it will be a long long continuous journey of financial discipline, learning, sacrifices, and delayed gratifications.
Hate to admit this feeling as well but it adds to my personal frustration seeing my friends who have less financial responsibilites - scrolling thru their travel photos, newly purchased car updates, and everyday eating out. It just adds fuel to the "when ang aking time lordt" thinking.
To be honest, I have options naman:
1) I can live above my means - no savings, more fun, more healing of inner childhood, pero impacted ang long term plans. Ofc di ito aligned sa aking general financial principle, so I don't plan to do this.
2) I can live again below my means - just provide the basic needs, eat 3x a day, save your allotted "wants" funds for later. Surely, I'll earn more savings faster. But where's the fun, or even comfort?
3) To just live within my means - provide the necessities, utilize "wants" funds for my wants. Although, as per personal experience, there are chances of overspending. Though, monthly savings are non-negotiable naman since I always cut it to budget allotment. Pros is I achieve fun - but sometimes with the risk of overspending.
Ofcourse kung sasagutin ko yung sarili ko, I will choose 3. Pero it has to come with more financial discipline - being more strict sa kung hanggang saan lang ang dapat gagastusin, bc that's what it should be.
Tbh di ko na rin alam saan papunta itong post na to, so bahala na, skl.

2024.06.10 17:29 LunarGhoul Buy or Finance new car?

I'm looking to get a new vehicle, and I'm in a financial position where I could pay the entire price in cash if I wanted.
I can also finance the car for a little under 4%, and then throw the money I would have spent buying the car in a 5% CD, which should effectively leave me better off in the end.
Would it be better to finance in my position? Is there anything that I'm not considering here?

2024.06.10 17:27 DealerDigitalUK Can't verify clients business

Car dealer client
Due to them being FCA regulated and the ad being about car finance I have to verify their business info and fca verification with fb (something I've done lots of for other clients). However this dealer's just is not verifying - the phone number and email are correct but it just says "Something Went Wrong" when trying to verify either.
I've had the client try to login to business support home to try and do it themselves and it doesnt work for them either.
Is this an issue on Facebook's side do we think? The only thing that could be wrong on the dealers side is that they have recently changed location so their new location is currently updating on companies house (UK business directory).
Any help or troubleshooting for people who have had a similar issue with verifying business'? Thanks

2024.06.10 17:26 Wooden-Cut-6431 Seeking some advice

Hello,
So long story short, my whole life my father told me he and my mother were paying for my college. I got scholarships to cover my first year of school at a public university then decided I wanted to transfer to a nursing program at a private university. I always worked 2-3 part time jobs while taking on a full time credit course load and had to manage my own financial aid applications each year. My father always instructed me to take out the max I could with loans.
Fast forward to after I graduate and my father has a conversation with me saying, hey so we aren’t actually paying for school, I just said that so you’d be motivated to get your college degree and graduate. So we are covering the parents’ plus loans and you’re responsible for a $40,000 loan of your own. I want to preface by saying I am not AT ALL upset about having had to pay off college debt, I am upset in that my father didn’t have a conversation with me when I entered college or even with my husband and I (I got married at age 21- 1 year prior to graduating) when we got married and was just honest that they couldn’t cover full tuition. Fast forward and I work my butt off as a nurse and am able to pay off my $40,000 debt in 2 years while my husband attended medical school full time.
Fast forward again to today (I’ve been a nurse for almost 5 years) and I recently quit my job due to mental health reasons. I am also not sure if nursing is the right fit for me anymore. This weekend my father brought up in conversation that he and my mother will have to cut back on their fun activities because they will have to start paying back the parents’ plus loan which is around $80,000. This is the combined parents plus loan for my sister and I, which I recognize is a lot of money. He also said, “I think it would be fair to expect that you have another nursing job by august first so that we (my parents) feel comfortable about paying your student loans.”
He kept referring in the conversation to all of the things he did financially to provide for our family (vacations, nice cars, etc) when we were growing up because he never wanted my sister, mom, and I to feel like we “couldn’t have it all.” My father didn’t graduate college but has worked for the same company for about 30 years in various positions there. I don’t think it’s fair for him to use that as leverage when I was literally a child and had no say in what my parents did with their money, so I felt like that was used as a guilt tactic to somehow make me feel bad for their financial decisions?
I guess the bottom line is, do I “owe” it to my parents to stay in the nursing field because they are helping pay for school? I feel like (if I could afford it) I just want to write a check and be like- “here, here’s the money to cover the parents’ plus loan, now please stop holding finances and my career choices over my head.” Thanks for any advice you have….

2024.06.10 17:19 Zokstone I had an incredible experience at the DMV last week.

Genuinely. I know how crazy this sounds, but hear me out:
I'm a 33 year-old guy on the autism spectrum, the kind that makes it hard for me to function as a regular human despite the fact that outwardly I seem fairly adjusted. A side effect of this is that I have trouble with any kind of paperwork, filling out forms, bureaucratic nonsense...all of this turns my brain into goo immediately. It really fucking sucks. I also have pretty terrible spatial awareness and depth perception unless I'm focused, so I've also never driven a car. Ever. It's for your safety and mine, the convenience isn't worth the risk.
This is all said to explain/excuse the fact that for the last seven years I've lived in Wisconsin, I've never gotten an official WI state I.D. I've always just used one from a different state, one without an expiry date, and its gotten me by just fine.
But I am struggling with paying bills, maintaining a job and I've been uninsured for almost a decade. I have finally come to terms with realizing that I need help, and its the help that only bureaucracy can provide. And I need an I.D. for that.
So I went to the DMV. It took two weeks for me to mentally prepare to do this, despite the fact that the DMV is literally a 20-minute WALK from my house (if you're wondering what the fuck my deal is - imagine living it and still not knowing)
It wasn't busy, my partner was there with me for support, and my anxiety was doing alright. Going good so far!
After my number was called I went up to the counter and started talking to the DMV employee when I noticed she had tons of rainbow infinity signs all over her lanyard and on pins stuck to it (for those that don't know - rainbow infinity symbol is the accepted sign for autism awareness.) So I asked her if she was on the spectrum, and she said a lot of members of her family are neurodivergent, her kids are, and that she's officially undiagnosed and suspected of having autism as well.
What followed was an absolutely beautiful, personal and eye-opening discussion about...everything. Acceptance, dealing with the hard things, trying your best in a world that doesn't understand you...I felt very, very seen standing there in the middle of the DMV.*
When we were done, she then handed me a form for "invisible disability" disclosure, something I would have never known existed had she not told me about it. As someone that has been arrested for "erratic and suspicious" behavior before (when I was just freaking out because there were cops around) - this could save my life someday.
I feel terrible not remembering her name, because it was beautifully unique, but I just wanted to share this bit of cheer and thank her publicly, since it's been pretty dark around here the past few days.
*this sounds like a Phoebe Bridgers lyric

\*TW: Domestic violence and sexual assault.*\**

Background

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago just off the southwestern coast of Morocco. Like most of the Canary Islands, Tenerife features a very rugged, volcanic landscape with innumerable canyons, mountains and steep cliffs. The island's northeastern shore is dominated by the Anaga peninsula, a mountain massif with many peaks breaching 1,000 meters in height (3,300 feet) despite their proximity to the coast. Anaga, an UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve, is characterized by its laurissilva forests; subtropical, jungle-like wilderness whose thick vegetation is constantly watered by the trade winds as they hit the island's mountains and unload the oceanic moisture they carry on the slopes.
Other than the city of Santa Cruz (the island's capital, 204,000 inhabitants) and the university town of La Laguna (155,000 inhabitants), the Anaga peninsula is rather sparsely populated; the small towns and villages that can be found on the mountains amount to just some 2,000 people -who, until the late 20th century, lived primarily of agriculture.

Dámaso

Dámaso Rodríguez Martín was born in Los Batanes, a small village in the western flank of the Agana massif, on 11 December, 1944. His parents were Martín Rodríguez Silverio and Celestina Martín Perdomo. Dámaso had one brother and three sisters. The family was very poor and they survived of the land. Even though Martín and Celestina took their children to work with them on the crops, they also made sure they'd attend school and get their basic education.
Los Batanes, the village Dámaso was born and raised in.
There's very little information on Dámaso's childhood. He was reportedly quiet as a boy and, although he showed little interest in school, he was said to be hardworking. A 1981 newspaper article mentioned a childhood incident in which Dámaso and a girl he went to school with were caught touching each other; when Celestina found out, she spanked the young Dámaso so badly that he couldn't sit down properly for months.
From a very early age, Dámaso enjoyed exploring the Anaga massif in his spare time, and was said to know almost every hidden corner in the mountains -down to every cave- which would become relevant in the future. He was affectionately referred to by family and neighbors as 'Maso', a diminutive form of his first name that would accompany him for the rest of his life.
Dámaso's first clashes with the law began in his teenage years; he got into numerous fights and began burglarizing homes. In January 1962, aged 17 and already well known by the local police officers, he was sentenced to one year and half in prison for stealing a car. Dámaso was released in September 1963 and was called to perform mandatory military service. This would become a pivotal point in his life; Dámaso found enjoyment in the army lifestyle, so once he completed his military service he joined the Spanish Legion. He completed his training -according to some sources, he excelled- and was sent to serve in Western Sahara (at the time Spanish Sahara). The area, then still a Spanish colony, had been the scenario of a war between Spain and Morocco in the late 1950s. It's worth nothing that the training at the Legion, especially back in these days, was grueling and even potentially fatal, with live-ammo exercises like the 'pasillo de fuego' weeding off those who could freeze during combat.
In 1966 Dámaso, now 23-years old and graduated to corporal in the Legion, was sent to Sidi Ifni, Morocco (which would still remain controlled by Spain until 1969). The situation at the time in Sidi Infi, which had been sieged during the aforementioned Ifni War, was one of tension and danger for Spanish legionaries like Dámaso was; the war was long over, but the international community was pressing Spain to relinquish the territory, which emboldened the Moroccan forces to threaten the colony. Despite these circumstances, Dámaso proved to work well under the pressure, and that year he was promoted to first corporal.
The young Dámaso in the Spanish Legion (circa 1966)
It's not clear why, but just a year later (1967) Dámaso quit his military career and returned not only to Tenerife, but to his birthplace, the Anaga mountains. He married his wife Mercedes Martín that same year, and the young couple moved to a small house in El Peladero a remote area in a section of the massif named El Moquinal (and which even back in the 1980s still wasn't accessible via paved roads). Dámaso and Mercedes would welcome two daughters, in 1973 and 1975 respectively. He would hold several jobs during the 1970s, but most notably he worked as a goat shepherd and as a coal merchant. Around this time, he also trained and competed in lucha canaria (Canarian wrestling). Although he was competent and became one of the best wrestlers of his team, Dámaso's sports career was ultimately unremarkable.*
\Note: Traditionally, Canarian wrestling hasn't had weight divisions; wrestlers are categorized based on record and accomplishments. As such, bigger wrestlers fare better. Dámaso was described as physically strong, but not a really big man (most top wrestlers tend to stand at least 185 cm tall -or 6'1"- and weight north of 110 kg -or 240 lbs).*
Dámaso kept himself mostly out of legal trouble during the 1970s. However, Mercedes would reveal after his death that all these years with him were marked with the frequent beatings Dámaso gave her and his frequent use of hard drugs (a habit that's believed he picked while serving in Sidi Ifni). He would also rape her often -at the time the Spanish criminal law didn't contemplate marital rape. According to Mercedes, the beatings and the rapes were especially frequent during Christmas. There's no information on his treatment of his daughters at the time, but it's known that by the time they had become teenagers in the late 1980s both girls were terrified of him.
The home where Dámaso and Mercedes lived in with their young daughters, pictured in 1981.
As an adult now in his 30s, Dámaso continued his habit of wandering into Anaga's laurissilva forests, and was known to disappear into the wilderness with ease whenever he wanted. This quality, along with his hard-angled eyebrows, granted him the nickname of 'El Brujo' ('The Warlock'). Contrary to popular belief, his nickname didn't stem from his alleged interest in the occult -which in reality he never manifested. Lesser known is the fact that locals -including some of the police officers he had been arrested by in his youth- often referred to him as 'el asilvestrado'\* (which, in the Canarian dialect of Spanish, kind of means 'the feral one'), alluding to his poor social skills, his affinity for the wilderness and his explosive temper.
Dámaso, pictured here at some time in the 1970s
\The term, in the context locals were using it here, has a humorous connotation; it comes from the adjective 'silvestre' ('wild, indigenous'), which is used in reference to vegetables, not animals.*
Dámaso retained his reputation as a hardworking neighbor, but by then he was also known in the area for his antisocial personality and many locals were afraid of him. He also began to be known as a voyeur that would masturbate while spying on the young couples that frequented the popular lovers' lanes in El Moquinal and the surrounding areas at night. In 1977 he was reported to authorities for the alleged rape of an intellectually disabled woman, but it seems that this accusation didn't go to court.

First crime; The Crime of El Moquinal (Baldomero Rodríguez and María Ledesma)

In February 1981 Dámaso became unemployed. According to Mercedes, he'd spend entire nights wandering around the laurissilva forests.
Dámaso, in 1981
Baldomero Rodríguez
On the night of 7 to 8 November, 1981 (Saturday to Sunday), at around 9:30 PM, 24-years old Baldomero Rodríguez Suarez and his 19-years old girlfriend María de los Ángeles Ledesma Reyes (both from the coastal town of Punta del Hidalgo) were stopped at this gravel patch next to the shoulder of the road that goes to El Moquinal, inside Baldomero's Mazda 323. Dámaso, who that night had gone out to watch couples, noticed the car and approached it from its right side before hiding in the thick vegetation. He was carrying a 9mm ASTRA pistol, loaded with three bullets.
The couple was having sex on the passenger's seat. Baldomero was laying on top of María, and thus his upper body was visible through the car's window. At some point María thought she had noticed movement outside the car, but couldn't tell what it was (even today, with more extensive road lighting, the area is extremely dark at night; back in 1981 drivers relied solely on their vehicle's headlights to navigate the area). She had begun sharing her concerns with her boyfriend when Dámaso -some distance right of and behind the car- fired a shot and the Mazda's back right window blew up in pieces.
The bullet hit Baldomero on his shoulder. This wound, although clinically significant, wasn't life-threatening. Baldomero hurriedly rolled over onto the driver's seat and tried to start the engine, but before he could do it Dámaso, now approaching the car, fired two more shots. This time, the bullets hit Baldomero's torso from one side through his arm, puncturing both his lungs and his heart. Soon Baldomero lost consciousness while sitting behind the wheel and he'd bleed to death in a matter of minutes, with his girlfriend -up to this point, still uninjured- sitting next to him.
Seconds later, María saw Dámaso approaching the Mazda from the passenger's side. Dámaso stuck his hand inside the back right window, grabbed María by her hair and dragged her out of the car through the window. María was dragged this way for about 20 meters (65 feet) west down the road, in the opposite direction the Mazda was headed to. Dámaso took María a few meters into the bushes and assaulted her sexually twice. He also beat her up; the beating was so severe that María had to be treated at a hospital later.
According to her horrifying account of the assault she made later at the police station, Dámaso seemed unfazed by the injuries she was inflicting him in self defense; first, when she scratched his forearms deeply, and later when she grabbed a fist-sized rock she managed to find and banged Dámaso's head with it repeatedly as hard as she could while he raped her. During the assault, Dámaso told her -many times- that 'she was really pretty' and that 'he thought he knew her from La Laguna'. He also threatened her by yelling 'stay put, or I'll kill you' and, when during the assault María weeped over Baldomero's demise, Dámaso would coldly tell her 'stop worrying about him, he's dead'.
After the second assault, Dámaso forced María back into the backseat of the Mazda, shoved Baldomero's dead body aside onto the passenger seat and drove for a couple of kilometers until reaching the starting point of Llano de los Viejos' hiking trail. He stopped the car, stripped Baldomero's body of his sweater and pants and demanded María to give him all the money she and Baldomero had in the car, which amounted to 16,400 pesetas (adjusting for inflation, €499 or $543 in 2023). After that Dámaso exited the Mazda and disappeared back into the woods, leaving the terrified and injured María in the car next to her boyfriend's body, in a remote mountain road in the middle of the night. According to some sources, after a while María (who did not possess a driver's license) sat behind the wheel and managed to drive the Mazda -with Baldomero's body in it- all the way to the nearest village, where she found help.
Sketch of the 1981 attack. \"Escondrijo de Dámaso\" (marked with the white X) refers to the spot where Dámaso hid and where fired the first shot from. \"Lugar de la violación\" refers to the spot where Dámaso sexually assaulted María. Note: the top of this map is facing south, not north.
The following morning police officers from La Laguna questioned dozens of people that lived in the area. The only item on their questioning was whether if they knew of a man who was known to spy on couples, violent and knowledgeable of the area; almost invariably these questioned immediately brought up 'El Brujo', Dámaso Rodríguez. Shortly after, at a police station in La Laguna, María Ledesma was shown a book with the pictures of the municipality's usual suspects; she recognized her rapist as soon as she spotted Dámaso's mugshot between the pages. Her official statement at the station lasted five hours.
Less than 72 hours later, two police officers arrested 36-years old Dámaso at his home. The arrest was done at 4 AM, while Dámaso was sleeping, due to the threat officers knew Dámaso could pose should he had resisted. The 9mm Astra handgun was found at a cave not far from his house (although an officer had to rappel 60 meters -200 feet- down a very steep slope to reach it). The bullets that hit Baldomero would later be proven to have been fired with that particular pistol, and the shells were found right where María told officers the assault had taken place. Dámaso had stolen the gun from a sergeant of the Spanish Army that had been sent to Tenerife from mainland Spain to assist on a series of training operations in the area; the sergeant had kept the gun in his car's glovebox, and all Dámaso had to do was to sneak into the car when the sergeant's attention was busy with the operations (he hadn't locked the car). Back in the 1980s army officials weren't held as accountable as today are regarding the storage of their firearms.
The 9mm ASTRA pistol Dámaso murdered Baldomero with.
Dámaso's fingerprints were found all over the interior of Baldomero's Mazda, despite the limitations of 1980s forensics techniques. The officers also noticed numerous fresh scratches all over his forearms he couldn't explain in any convincing manner. Although at first Dámaso denied the accusations, he'd end up confessing to the crime just a few hours later. He was jailed awaiting trial, with murder and rape charges. Just a few days later it surfaced that Dámaso and María were distantly related.
Baldomero's Mazda 323, after the attack.
In June 1982 Dámaso Rodríguez was sentenced to 55.5 years in prison for what the press had already christened as the Crime of El Moquinal; the sentence compounded as follows; 30 years for the murder of Baldomero Rodríguez, 20 years for the rape of María Ledesma, 5 years for illegal firearm possession, six months for robbery. He was also sentenced to pay a 80.000-pesetas fine (€2,213 or $2,412 in 2023) for illegal driving of a motor vehicle, since he didn't have a driver's license. According to a 1982 newspaper article released after the sentencing, Dámaso's defense had requested two years in prison for 'reckless manslaughter'; the article in question doesn't elaborate on the defense's grounds for such request.

Second prison stint

Dámaso was sent to serve his sentence at Tenerife Penitentiary Center (later at Tenerife II, which was built in the mid 1980s). Even though he was a rapist, Dámaso didn't have a particularly tough time in prison. It's a commonly held belief that he was respected by other inmates. However, prison guards that worked there at the time have stated that this affirmation is misleading; nobody messed with Dámaso in prison, but not out of respect. Rather, it was because of his intimidating appearance and especially because of the level of violence he was known to be capable of whenever he felt wronged (rightfully or not). In fact, they've stated Dámaso was even reluctant to socialize with his fellow inmates, furthering his feral reputation.
In spite of that, his behavior in prison was reported as good, and Dámaso worked in the commissary's kitchen. In 2023, a prison guard attending a true crime conference in Tenerife gave his account on meeting Dámaso while working at Tenerife II prison. According to him, he met El Brujo in 1986, when he was 21-years old and Dámaso 41 or 42. He explained Dámaso adhered to a strong personal hierarchy system he wouldn't allow anyone to challenge; seasoned guards were to be respected, younger ones were not. One day this guard, young and inexperienced then, tried to give Dámaso orders, only to be confronted by him and be told that 'he wouldn't be following orders from a boy'. The guard added that very few inmates had spooked him the way Dámaso did that day in 1986; he was slim but had bulky biceps, and was known to have considerable brute strength -likely due to his lifetime of old school manual labor. But what scared him the most was, he said, the way Dámaso looked at him during that confrontation (he described his stare as 'having nothing behind it'). Incidentally, the guard added that once Dámaso was assigned to work in the kitchen he surprised inmates and guards alike with the tasty food he could cook, especially burgers.
Tenerife II Penitentiary Center, where Dámaso was incarcerated from some time in the mid-1980s until 1991
Dámaso's good behavior in prison was such that at some point he was appointed trustee. His mother Celestina and his wife Mercedes visited him regularly for the first six years of his sentence. After that, their visits (especially his wife's) became rarer, which allegedly made him feel abandoned and thus became angrier. Although his behavior continued being good overall, by 1987 he began displaying aggression again; that year he had been allowed to leave the prison's premises to work as an apprentice for a locksmith, but lost this privilege shortly after due an incident in which he ended up bursting out in anger while at work.
Dámaso, in the mid-1980s
Subsequent leaves were denied that year and most of the following one, until on 24 August 1988 Dámaso was granted a weekend leave; he ended up arrested and sent back to prison after he threatened his wife and stole a police patrol Jeep in Tegueste. This incident had his prison privileges revoked once again. On 1 March, 1989 Dámaso began a hunger strike -it's not clear what his demands were- that ended 29 days later.
He went back to his good behavior during the rest of 1989 and most of 1990, and on 12 December 1990 Dámaso was granted a three-day leave. Unlike previous instances, Dámaso conducted himself properly; he spent these days with his wife and daughters and caused no troyble. On 15 December he returned to prison, his good behavior noted for future leave considerations.

2024.06.10 17:17 erleaves Displaying most recent items of a SP list on a shared SP team site

Hi All,
I have a SharePoint list which I use for the backend of a vehicle reservation app (power apps). What I’m hoping to achieve is show the most recent location of all the cars that are bookable.
The user completes a return form when they are finished so I’d be hoping to list only the latest entry per vehicle where the status is listed as ‘returned’.
Is there a way to have a live card or hero tile on a SharePoint site so people could see up to date info?
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks,
Brian

2024.06.10 17:02 Last_Boss6036 Used car dealerships with SUVs in stock that still have warranty? Who would you recommend.

I'm looking for a SUV that I can finance, I'd prefer something less than 3 years old but I don't want to have to order a new car if I can get a used one cheaper but I still want warranty.
I've looked at most of the dealerships, does anyone have a used garage they like? My budget is $25,000 $30,000.

2024.06.10 17:02 aidsgrenade Seeking Financial Advice: Balancing Debt Repayment, Emergency Fund, and Retirement Savings

Hi everyone,
I'm 27 years old and starting to earning $120k per year. Here's a breakdown of my financial situation:
I have a Simple IRA with about $20k, but I recently switched to a larger company that offers a 401(k) match: 100% on the first 3% of pay and 50% on the next 2%. If I contribute 5%, I'll receive the maximum 4% company match. I don't have a Roth IRA.
I'm trying to figure out the best way to allocate my funds between starting a Roth IRA, building an emergency fund, and paying down my debt. Any advice on how to balance these priorities would be greatly appreciated. I don't have many personal finance resources besides the internet.
Thank you!

2024.06.10 17:01 dtmfadvice If my city treated a car permit like we treat a building permit

Before applying for a car permit from your city’s Automobile Authorization Board, you must hold at least two neighborhood meetings for community input. Your neighbors will provide valuable advice on the color, style, practicality, and character of your vehicle. You will need to promise never to loan the car to anyone unrelated to you, because sharing vehicles with non-relatives isn’t in keeping with neighborhood character.
After modifying your purchase proposal based on your neighbors’ input, you may apply to the Automobile Authorization Board.
You will need to hire a car lawyer and car stylist to present your application to the Automobile Authorization Board, and persuade them that your chosen vehicle is in keeping with neighborhood character. All members of the Board drive Ferraris and are skeptical about the idea that anything else might be an acceptable form of transportation.
The car lawyer charges $600 per hour, including time spent answering emails from the Board. Board meetings take at least two hours.
The Board will require that you return six weeks later for a second meeting.
For the second meeting, you must bring proposals for three different vehicles you are considering. You must also hire an environmental engineer to calculate the carbon output of each of your proposed vehicles based on your projected driving style, average distance per year, and air conditioning usage.
The Board will disagree with your environmental engineer’s methodology and require you to return six weeks later for a third meeting. The nature of their disagreement will take your lawyer and your engineer at least one billable hour each to parse.
For the third meeting, the Board will require you to conduct a shadow study proving that your car won’t cast shadows on nearby gardens. The shadow study must be conducted by a credentialed architect.
If you will be trading in an existing vehicle, you must apply for separate permission from the Historic Car Commission. The Historic Car Commission may impose a one-year delay on your purchase if your trade-in is deemed significant. There is no written definition of significance.
If you do get a permit to buy, you must spend an additional 20% of the purchase price making a down payment for a low-income family’s car.
You will need to hire a consultant to run the lottery for this affordable car.
The consultant charges even more than the car lawyer.

First automatic car
Been looking around the sub Reddit for first automatic cars under £5k, see a lot of Mazda being mentioned, I have taken a look at auto trader and spotted these 3, any advice would be great or if I could get better? I am aware that rust could be an issues with these cars so and I haven’t actually viewed them yet so unaware but putting these out there just to get some advice? Thanks

2024.06.10 16:52 ChainAdventurous941 Need Help

Hello, I am an IB student who is deeply interested in a lot of 3Blue1Brown's videos and was inspired to start a Math extended essay but am stuck on what topic to do for this essay.
(FYI, the extended essay is like a 4000 word essay about a certain subject which touches on out or curriculum topics nearing a university level but not truly at a university level.)
I apologise if this post isn't relevant to this sub as I am lost and don't know where else to ask this, I want to do like an extended essay covering similar topics to his channels content, ideally I was hoping to do something finance/economics related but my plans have been kinda rejected because the topics were too difficult (Chaos Theory, Stochastic Calculus).
I will only have around 100-150 hours to study on a topic and ideally I want to finish my essay before summer ends. Do you guys have any interesting fields or areas of study to recommend me to learn that I could use?
Again I apologise for the semi-irrelevant post topic but I appreciate any form of help, thank you 🙏

2024.06.10 16:41 anonbcscared Dealer contribution?

Looking at the sheet for my lease that is ending, and I’m considering starting a new lease. The question I have is that my “How the amount due at lease signing or delivery will be paid” section is broken into parts and can someone help me understand? If I decide to lease again, i would like to do this in a smarter way that i did the first time (was in mental survival mode, didn’t get as involved as i should?), and i see the advice quite often to Not put any money “down” on a lease. Should I not use trade-in equity as any kind of lease downpayment or “amt due at signing” too? Can I just ask for the amount they offer (I have a very low mileage clean and desired car so ran numbers and hope they may offer $5K) and walk out?
Main thing I’m confused about on the form is the category shows: 1) credit for net trade-in allowance (I traded in and got $4500) 2) manufacturer contrib ($0) 3) Dealer contribution ($1271) 4) amt to be paid in cash ($0)
What is #3?? Can I expect that from this new lease to be same? Is it a result of me asking for lower than MSRP? (& therefore a goal but not an amount to be certain of for next lease/car?)
And with #4, did I do right by not putting cash into start of lease, and is that the best I can do for new lease? Can I get some Of the amount for trade-in as a check on the spot?
