2024.05.15 02:37 Tall_Process_3138 Did any other civilization than China have tombs that were buried with manuscripts of non religous works?

Ancient china has tombs that were buried with manuscripts of works that were both religous and non religous like Mawangdui Silk Texts, Yinqueshan Han Slips, etc. The collection of those tombs manuscripts is massive and really impressive considering ancient manuscripts are very rare to find.
But did other civilizations have non religous works buried with them?

2024.05.15 02:21 Ok-Alps-2842 A very brief summary of common afterlife beliefs in modern and ancient religions

The afterlife has been one of the key features of nearly every faith that ever existed, but that doesn't mean all of them think about the hereafter in the same way, the differences between the ultimate fate of the departed and their location vary too much for a unified view, this thread aims to provide a very brief summary about common afterlife beliefs in recorded religions.
The locations and conditions of the afterlife vary a lot in many ways, including how pleasant or unpleasant they are, how earthly or fantastical they are, if there is some sort of morality attached to it or not and if the dead still have the same physical needs they had in life or not.
Keep in mind this list is by no means a complete list and it only briefly explains the main concepts of recorded religions through history, concepts that are too obscure, ambiguous or unrecorded aren't part of this summary.
REINCARNATION
Reincarnation means coming back to life in a new body with a new personality, it's most common in Eastern religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism, as well as new religious movements such as New Age and Spiritualism, some small sects within Western religions believe that too, but it's a minority view.
Some ancient religions from all over the world have this concept too but they are poorly attested, the Maya, Aztecs, Celts and the Norse believed in reincarnation at least for some people or parts of the soul, but it's very difficult to know if this belief was universal and how it worked exactly, Greeks and Romans were aware of this concept but it seems this belief was more commonly held by certain philosopher circles and mystery cults and never reached mainstream acceptance.
RESURRECTION
Resurrection means coming back to life in the same body with the same personality, it's a very common concept in Western religions like Judaism, Christianity and Islam, as well as Zoroastrianism, but not all sects within each of these faiths believe this as an universal feature, at least not in the same way, usually the resurrected have their bodies restored the way it was in life and sometimes they are described as being perfect and immortal.
ANNIHILATION
To put it bluntly, annihilation means the true death of the soul, it means cessation of existence, it's a minority view held by some denominations within Christianity such as Seventh Day Adventists, I'm not sure if any other modern religion has the same idea.
Despite being a seemingly modern idea, it's anything but, ancient Egyptian religion had the same idea for at least part of its history, the goddess Ammit devoured the soul of those deemed unworthy and they ceased to exist.
HEAVEN
A heaven is defined as a place that is perfect or at least much better than Earth, all of the major modern religions have at least 1 heaven and many ancient religions had the same concept, it can be eternal or temporary and the criteria for admission is very different in each religion, sometimes it's following said religion, it can be being very benevolent and in some ancient religions, being a hero or an important warrior who died in battle.
It's known as Jannah in Islam and Garodman in Zoroastrianism, Eastern faiths tend to have several heavens but they are temporary, Greeks and Romans had a concept of heaven called Elysium, the Norse had a similar concept in form of Valhalla and Folkvangr for warriors and heroes slain in war, but it's hard to know how widespread the belief was, Egyptians had a heaven called Sekhet Aaru, the final home of those deemed worthy by the gods, but it was a place people still had to work.
In some depictions it is impossible to describe exatcly what it is because it demands a consciousness well beyond the human capacity to understand, in other depictions it's descibed as very earthly in geography and the way its residents live, in some beliefs of New Age and Spiritualism, people create their own heavens in the astral plane by the power of their own thoughts or they are attracted to such places becase of their mindset.
HELL
A hell is defined as a place to punish the wicked or at least as a place much worse than Earth, all of the major modern religions have at least 1 hell and many ancient religions had the same concept, it can be eternal or temporary, that's why I'm lumping the concept of Purgatory here, the criteria for admission are different in every religion, but for some reason it's usually described in a very earthly manner.
Hell is known as Jahannam in Islam and Duzakh in Zoroastrianism, Eastern faiths tend to have several hells such as Naraka, Niraya, it's known as Diyu in China, Greeks and Romans had a hell called Tartarus for the wicked.
In some understandings of New Age and Spiritualism, people create their own hells in the astral plane by the power of their own thoughts or they are attracted to such places because of their mindset, Emanuel Swedenborg, one of the first Spiritualists, believed hell was a place the wicked went to by their own choice because it made them happy.
UNDERWORLD
The underworld, also known as netherworld, is a place for neither reward nor punishment, it's the place all the dead go to regardless of their behavior in life, but in some cases a select few could be taken to a heaven or hell, this was a very common view in ancient Near Eastern religions, but as far as I know, no modern religion kept this concept as an afterlife destination.
The netherworld is usually described as very earthly and as a gloomy and dreary place located in a dark cave below the ground, the dead usually lead a similar existence to when they were alive, so much that they are sometimes depicted as still needing to eat and drink and some people would pour libation on the grave of their family members, because the food and water of the netherworld were said to taste horrible.
The underworld was known by Sumerians and Akkadians by names like Kur, Irkalla, Arali, Ganzer, Ersetu among many others, Canaanites knew it as Sheol and Greeks knew it as Hades before they added ideas of heaven and hell, not all depictions of the netherworld were so bleak and depressing, people could make it more bearable by being buried with their possessions to take with them to the underworld.

  3. 无人爱护的保护 (Protection of Neglect): Confucius transfers his own pain to his enemy, forcing them to bear the burden of his injuries. This technique embodies Confucius's selflessness and willingness to sacrifice for the greater good. By shifting his injuries onto his opponents, Confucius not only evens the odds in combat but also imparts a valuable lesson on empathy and compassion. The pain inflicted upon his enemies serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all beings and the consequences of one's actions.
  4. 不受喜爱的保护 攻击 (Unloved Protection Attack): After transferring his damage to his opponent, Confucius strikes at the exact point of injury, capitalizing on the fresh damage inflicted to deliver a devastating blow. This technique exemplifies Confucius's keen observational skills and tactical precision. By targeting vulnerabilities with surgical precision, Confucius maximizes the impact of his attacks, exploiting weaknesses in his opponent's defenses to gain the upper hand in battle. The calculated nature of this technique reflects Confucius's commitment to efficiency and effectiveness in combat.
  5. 仪仗队 (Procession of Virtue): Confucius redirects the damage inflicted by the environment onto his enemy, using their surroundings against them in battle. This technique demonstrates Confucius's resourcefulness and adaptability on the battlefield. By harnessing the power of his surroundings, Confucius turns obstacles into opportunities, leveraging the environment to his advantage. The fluid and dynamic nature of this technique reflects Confucius's ability to adapt to changing circumstances and overcome adversity through ingenuity and perseverance.

2024.05.14 21:23 aerovistae Switched from League to Dota after 3 years, felt like writing up a comparison between the two

After playing League for ~3 years I decided to stop and learn a new game and now have been playing Dota for about 8 months. As I've been learning I've been comparing and contrasting them, and I felt like writing up my thoughts.
I'm not a high ranked player; I was emerald in League and I don't really played ranked in dota. It doesn't matter, since this post isn't about tactics/strategy or how to win-- I'm just talking about the differences between the mechanics of the two games and their clients.
Disclaimer, this is all about Soloqueue. Pro play is a different environment and many things are different. I'm just talking about the average player's experience.
In League's favor:
  • Better lore. It's not a contest really. League's champions all have names and stories that are placed front and center, whereas Dota heroes are more like archetypes than individuals with distinct identities. Instead they're known by a description of what they are, while their "real names" are kind of buried in half-assed bio summaries and infrequently referenced. There's a dude called "Anti-Mage." There's a dude on a bat and his name is Batrider. There's nothing in Dota to compare with the hype lore media Riot produces, like the fiddlesticks rework video or the 10 min yone/yasuo video. Champion lore just gets way more money put into it in League.
  • League has WAYYYYY better champion animations and ability visual designs. This is for me where League blows Dota out of the water. There's really just nothing in Dota that feels like Jhin, or Ekko, or Aphelios, or Senna, or so many others. With rare exception, almost all the champions in league have aspects that FEEL amazing - great sound design / animations / feedback delays that are incredibly rewarding. Dota's heros are really fun to play and I'm having a great time, but if you put them side by side with like 90% of League's cast, the animations of their abilities and movements just feel kinda flat by comparison. One of the easiest side-by-sides is Darius vs Dota's hero "Axe" -- he has the same ult as darius, completely identical except for darius ult's interaction with passive. But all Axe does for his ult visually is a little hop and swing of the axe. It's really lame. Compare that to the awesome sound of a Darius ult kill, with the fear, especially on the God-King skin, and it makes Dota look 20 years old.
  • Skillshots! In Dota most abilities are just unit targeted, so they can't miss. There are skillshots too, but they're far fewer. In league skillshots are kind of the norm, and aiming them and dodging them is a big part of the game and it's fun to do so and makes you feel cool when you land them or dodge them. Having nearly everything be unit targeted isn't bad, it's just different, but it is something I enjoy a lot in League.
  • Cooler duels in league, and more of them. Dueling is a big part of league and it doesn't seem to be such a big part of Dota except maybe a bit in mid. Everyone in Dota has teleport (instead of recall), and it only has like a 1 minute cooldown. So whenever a fight starts, people teleport in and it becomes a teamfight. There's only one 1v1 lane (mid), the other two are 2v2 lanes. So there's much less of the 1v1 culture of League where people get to solo each other and take pride in the results. The lack of skillshots in dota plays into this too, since landing or dodging skillshots can definitively contribute to the outcome of a duel. With that mechanic less prominent, statchecking is a bit more common.
  • Very little 1v9 potential in Dota by comparison. Dota has FARRRRRR more CC than league, it's not even close. League feels like it has no CC compared to dota. In dota there is an item anyone can buy that silences a point-and-click target for 5 seconds, and another that polymorphs for 3 seconds, and so on. Many such items. There's a support who can root you for 4 seconds AND polymorph you for 3, and a carry who can silence you for FIFTEEN SECONDS with his ult. In such an environment, no one person can solo carry a game most of the time. You HAVE to work with your team. So if you love 1v9ing, League wins hard on that. But at the same time this can be a negative for league - it means there's more ego and less teamwork. People in dota are by default much more inclined to work together, because in the face of such powerful tools they HAVE to.
  • Recalling isn't a thing in Dota, which means the game is kind of constantly pedal-to-the-metal. It can be kind of nice to take a breather in League for a few seconds and stretch your arms while walking back to lane, given how intense the game can be.
  • In dota, holding tab doesn't show you what items people have built, nor their CS, and it's super frustrating. You have to click champion portraits individually to see their items, and you can't see their CS at all aside from your own. Probably hard-core dota loyalists will say this is part of the skill of the game, but honestly it's just annoying/bad UI design that they sort of got used to and became convinced was "part of the game" imo. It's really stupid and annoying.
  • In League you can buy as many wards as you want, whereas in Dota there's only ever a finite number available in the store which is SHARED among your team and then goes out of stock until it replenishes on a timer. I hate having to share wards with the team in dota, and the store being out of them. I understand it's part of the game and managing that is part of the skill of dota, but I find it tedious and don't really enjoy it as a mechanic. Additionally, wards take up an inventory slot in dota the same way control wards do in league, and it's just annoying.
  • Better champion skins, frankly. Some of League's skins are just amazing, as we all know. I would say there is very little cosmetic content in Dota that can compare to High Noon Senna or God-King Darius or [insert your favorite skin here.] There are cool skins, but it's just not the same. In Dota you can buy individual things, like updating a sword or a hat or a belt or a single ability's effect, all purchaseable separately. They have some full-kit skins, but that's not emphasized as much as in League where it's the standard and the only option, and they're just not as visually impressive.
In Dota's Favor:
  • All heroes are free from the start. It's great for trying them out and learning the game.
  • The game is less punishing to learn than league, for a multitude of reasons. Don't get me wrong, it still has an enormous barrier to entry and a steep learning curve, but it's just less painful. Everyone who ever learned League remembers what it was like in those first couple months being alone in lane against people who have been playing for years - especially in top lane or mid lane - and just getting fucking demolished 1v1 and not even being able to play. That doesn't happen as much in dota. First of all two lanes are ostensibly 2v2 and only one is 1v1, although there's a lot more roaming by the supports. There's also no jungler role, a role in league which often leads to that player being blamed for everything that goes wrong in a game. And then there's WAY more sustain - in Dota you don't recall to buy items, you have couriers ferry them out to you. So you can just kinda constantly have Dota's equivalent of health pots brought out to you, and only TP to fountain rarely when you're super low. This means there's a lot less crying under turret while zoned off CS unable to play.
  • Much better tools for learning. The tutorial is better. You're able to click other heroes to see their abilities in-game. There's a guide system full of user-contributed content where you can pick one in-game and it tells you what to buy and how to use that item on this hero, as well as how to use your abilities by just adding little user-written snippets to the tooltips when you hover them. League does have recommended items and recommended order for ability-levelling, but the fact that you can choose between different guides for different roles in dota is huge, and the text telling you when/why to use specific items for a hero is also majorly helpful. Imagine if you could pick a different guide in game for Senna support vs Senna adc, etc, that recommended specific choices based on the role and neatly fitted those recommendations into the UI.
  • Dota has way, way, way more interesting items. There are so many active items in Dota, and they feel much more impactful. By comparison nearly every item in league is just a statstick that gives one form or another of more damage or more tank. In Dota there are items that silence for 5s, that disarm (teemo blind) for 3s, that root an aoe for 2s, that polymorph for 3s, that reset ALL your cooldowns including ult (this one has a 5 min cooldown, the rest are <20sec.) Dota's version of Thornmail has an active that hugely amplifies the reflected damage for 5second, so the item feels great to use and has more skill expression - you time the active correctly when someone is focusing you and it makes a big difference. Given that most effects last 3-5 seconds, it's not about super-precise timing like in League so much as it is about broader strategic choices of using it early or late in a fight, etc. The only items in league that feel as strong as Dota items are Zhonyas, GA, and Locket, with honorary mention for the perennially overpowered botrk.
  • Dota has a way more beautiful map. It's not even close. Dota's map has so much going on. There are far more jungle camps, there's trees everywhere (which many hero abilities interact with in different ways!), there's high ground and low ground. There's so many different places and different entities and landforms, and it's just beautiful. League's map feels empty and stale by comparison. It's much smaller than dota's map, the jungle camps have fixed contents that never change (dota's camps rotate and change during the game). Not even to mention that Dota's map is divided in half and each team's side looks completely different from the other half. As opposed to league where they're identical but just rotated.
  • Aghanim's shard and scepter. These are the my favorite things in Dota that league doesn't have. What are they? They're two items you can buy that each have a different effect on every single individual hero in the game. On a case by case basis, they either UNLOCK ENTIRE NEW ABILTIES (literally the UI expands to add a new slot when you buy them) or they upgrade one or more of your existing abilities to have entirely new effects. This is just so cool and I was shocked when I learned about them. It's just so fun being able to gain new abilities even late in the game.
  • The talent tree, which is like an ability customization tree you progress through over the game and which is specific to the hero you're playing. In Dota the max level is 30, and every 5 levels in the game from level 10 onwards, you can unlock a "talent", at which point you pick one of two options to upgrade your hero. It might add 1s to your Q's stun. It might decrease the mana cost of your W. It might give you +250 base health, or +50 AD. It might add entirely new effects to your abilities, like making what was previously just a rooting projectile also start silencing. By level 30 you will have gotten to unlock everything in the tree (you don't typically reach level 30 very often in ranked games). Imagine if like at level 25 you could add "Mundo Q grounds for 0.5s" or "Irelia E +200 range". It's stuff like that and it's so fun.
  • Dota is more team-oriented. Due to the prevalence of long-lasting debuffs/cc from both items and hero abilities, no one person can really just solo carry to the same extent as in League. In my experience you only very rarely see someone 1v9 in Dota, and usually it's because the enemy team is just making stupid choices. This makes the game a bit more tolerable on average, although you encounter the same toxicity as in league just the same.
  • Dota has built-in voice chat. This actually does come in handy a lot. Hate not having it in league. It's typically effective and you can mute people in voice just the same as in chat so it's rarely been problematic in my personal experience so far.
  • Dota has "turbo mode." This mode is just great. Wish league had it. It's basically norms, but with aram-level gold income so all players get to full build in like 20-30 min without even powerfarming. It's really fun and great for learning, experimenting, and playing casually with less commitment.
  • In dota you don't recall. This means more time spent out on the map playing. Instead all players have the equivalent of the teleport summoner spell constantly available, which lets you take part in more plays. You also don't back to buy items, instead they get ferried out to you by little minions, which is great. Having items shipped out to you constantly instead of having to spend time retrieving them is awesome.
  • Better demo tool by far. League's practice tool is notoriously shitty. Being able to open the demo tool while you're waiting in queue in Dota is amazing. Can't do that in league.
  • Dota has 3 additional inactive item slots called the backpack. Love being able to hold 3 additional items that you can swap in or out (they're not usable from the backpack and you don't gain their effects, but you have them on your person to swap into from main inventory if you want). Just gives you nice flexibility when holding consumables and building stuff.
  • Neutral items. This just doesn't exist in league and I wish it did because these are really fun and cool. When you kill neutral jungle camps in dota they drop items, and the power level of the items scales over the course of the game, from weak ruby crystal type stuff to things that are as strong as rabadons. And they don't take up a normal inventory slot, so you effectively get an actual 7th item in dota.
  • The system for checking out customization and skins. Dota's system is pretty different, where instead of buying holistic skins that change everything, you can customize individual parts of a heroe's appearance, like their hat or their sword or their belt or gloves. There's WAYYYYY more options than in League, and you can try them all out in the client to see how they look.
  • Cosmetics for things other than the heroes/champions themselves. In League you can only buy champion skins. In Dota you can buy cosmetics for the ancient (nexus), the towers, the creeps, the map, etc. None of that exists in League. We fucking WISH we could buy that kind of stuff. Riot are you listening?
Conclusions
On the whole I'd say there's more things to like about Dota than about League just in sheer quantity of bullet points, but regardless I love both games and think they're both really fun. If Dota improved their lore, their animations, and their tab screen and League improved their cosmetics store and had a more interesting and dynamic map, plus neutral items and agh's shard & scepter, I wouldn't really have any major complaints about either of them.
I think anyone who loves one game could potentially love the other one too and it's totally worth learning whichever one you don't already know, if you have the time. Obviously these games take a ton of time and most people barely have time for one let alone two. But if you're young especially, they're both really fun.
It's pretty hard for me to see eye-to-eye with the people who love one game and ferociously hate on the other - it seems childish and kind of empty. To not find one as fun as the other, sure, that's one thing, but to expend energy hating it and constantly shitting on it, that just confuses me. You can have a favorite while still acknowledging the other as a comparably enjoyable game.
One final note - one of the things I found most interesting about comparing them is seeing which mechanics are normal in one game that would be overpowered in the other game.
In Dota there is a hero named Nature's Prophet whose W is TF ult minus the vision. It has a one minute cooldown, going down to eventually 0 cooldown late game, and he can access it from level one if he chooses to. Nature's prophet would likely have a >90% wr in League.
But then in League we have Zilean and his stupid ult on a one minute cooldown, while in Dota that only exists as a one-time use item (like GA) that you are rewarded with when you defeat their version of Baron, and it is basically the strongest item in the game. Zilean would likely have a >90% wr in dota.

If you haven't played both it's hard to relate. League has two 1v1 lanes and very little sustain - there's no couriers to bring you tangos and mangos. You have to walk, but missing even a little XP can be devastating, so leaving lane at all can end your lane for you. If you're new and you're laning against someone who isn't new, it is absolutely brutal and you basically cannot play the game. Everyone who ever learned League without prior moba experience remembers what it was like in those first couple months being alone in lane against people who have been playing for years - especially in top lane or mid lane - and just getting fucking demolished 1v1 and not even being able to play. That can happen in dota too, but it just doesn't happen as much by comparison. By comparison nearly every item in league is just a statstick. The only comparable items in league are Zhonya's Hourglass (kind of like a self-only Eul's) and Guardian Angel (literally Aegis - the resurrection effect isn't as game-changing in league as it is in dota). There's also a couple of items that give shields (damage barriers), but pretty much everything else is just....more damage, more armor, more health, more attack speed, etc. The item selection is just downright boring by comparison.
  • Way more beautiful map. It's not even close. Dota's map has so much going on. There's so many different places and different entities and landforms, and it's just beautiful. Trees, high ground, outposts, trails through the woods, a radiant side and a dire side, day/night cycle....League's map feels small, empty, and stale by comparison.
  • Fights are slower and longer in Dota. You last longer. You don't get one-shot as much. It's nice. It can be very frustrating in league being killed in a half second before you can do literally anything, over and over, game after game (if you get a bit unlucky and are playing a squishy champ/role and they have one or more assassins).
  • More team-oriented. Due to the prevalence of long-lasting debuffs from both items and hero abilities, no one person can really just solo carry to the same extent as in League. In my experience it's much less common to see someone 1v9 in Dota, and usually it's because the enemy team is just making stupid choices. In League it happens close to every other game.
  • Built-in voice chat. This actually does come in handy a lot. Hate not having it in league.
  • Turbo mode. This mode is just great. Wish league had it. Great for learning and testing and playing casually when you don't have time or interest in a serious game.
  • Not having to recall (teleport to base for hp/mana) is nice. More time spent out on the map playing. Having teleport constantly available lets you take part in more plays. Couriers are great. It's awesome having items shipped out to you instead of having to spend time retrieving them.
  • Better demo tool by far. League's practice tool is notoriously shitty. Being able to open the demo tool while you're waiting in queue in Dota is amazing. Can't do that in league.

  • Neutral items. This just doesn't exist in league and I wish it did because these are really fun and cool.
  • Agh's shard and scepter, and the talent tree. None of these things exist in League and they add so much and make the game much more fun to progress through.
  • More late game avenues to spend gold. Buybacks, Agh's shard and blessing, edible moon shard, boots of travel 1 & 2, item sharing, etc etc. I realize it's fairly rare to reach that level of full build in ranked, but in low level games it's more common and especially in turbo and honestly it's just great to have stuff to spend the gold on. In league you hit the 6 item cap and that's it, any gold beyond that is mostly wasted. It feels bad.
  • On a related note, it's also really nice how the dota items are useful already at their not-yet-fully-built stage, like how Eul's is a crucial item that doesn't really NEED to be upgraded to Wind Waker, but optionally CAN be later when you have the gold and nothing of higher priority to spend it on anymore. In League you don't get effects like the active on Eul's until you've completed it into its final form (i.e. Wind Waker). This means that in League, with rare exception, you don't really have much choice but to fully finish items one by one, whereas in Dota it's the norm to only build the intermediate item and not FULLY complete it until super late game if at all.
  • The announcer saying "Holy SHIT" when you go on a 10 kill streak. I find this hilarious.
  • Better ability tooltips. When the talent tree adds +40 damage to a skill, that skill's text is updated to reflect that. I love this. League has a lot of little issues with incomplete tooltips that don't tell you the full story of how an ability works. You have to reference the wiki constantly. I have to reference it SOMETIMES in dota (like I had no idea why Pudge's E could completely block the damage from his W until I read on the wiki that the rot damage is divided into 5x per second, not 1 instance once per second), but in League I have to reference it pretty much...uh....ngl, constantly. Even as someone who has played it for thousands of hours. Feelsbad.
  • Better cosmetics store. League's just has a splash art image of a skin and a purchase button. You have to go to youtube to see how it actually looks, and you cannot try it out at all without buying it. The fact that Dota allows you to launch into the demo tool with any cosmetic is amazing and something League players would literally trade sexual favors for.
  • Cosmetics for things other than the heroes/champions themselves. In League you can only buy champion skins. In Dota you can buy cosmetics for the ancient, the towers, the creeps, the map, etc. None of that exists in League. We fucking WISH we could buy that kind of stuff. Riot are you listening?
In League's favor:
  • Better lore. It's not a contest really. League's champions all have names and stories that are placed front and center, whereas Dota hero names are kind of buried and infrequently referenced. They're more like archetypes than individuals with their own identities. I mean...there's LITERALLY a dude called "Anti-Mage." There's a dude on a bat and his name is Batrider. The videos and media around champion releases in league are just way cooler. Check out the fiddlesticks rework video on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNn2F39G-6s
  • WAYYYYY better champion animations and sound design. This is for me where League blows Dota out of the water. Go ult someone as Axe - he does a little hop and swing animation. Then check this out, the corresponding ultimate in League from Darius, at the 3min mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRu0IznjCSc There's really just nothing in Dota that feels like Jhin, or Ekko, or so many others. With rare exception, almost all the champions in league have aspects that FEEL amazing - great sound design / animations / feedback delays that are incredibly rewarding. Dota's heros are really fun to play and I'm having a great time, but if you put them side by side with a pretty large percent of League's cast, the animations of many of their abilities and movements just feel kinda flat and low-budget by comparison.
Edit: Y'all have convinced me, Dota's sound design is also excellent. I guess what I meant is that League's is sometimes more thrilling, there's more peaks of excitement in the sound, but Dota's sound is also superb. Dota also has some excellent animations, like void ult. I remain of the opinion that on the whole the way the champions in League are animated is much better-looking than Dota, where a lot of abilities are just kind of a hand wave. The movements of the champions' bodies in League are much more expressive.
  • Cooler duels. Dueling is a big part of league and it doesn't seem to be such a big part of Dota by comparison. Whenever a fight starts, people teleport in and it becomes a teamfight, or someone disengages and gets away somehow using one of the many items like force staff or eul's. In league, two lanes are 1v1 and the jungler also often 1v1s, so there's a kind of constant dueling and it really lets you find fun ways to express skill and mastery. There's only one item that will get you out of a sticky situation instead of many, and only a portion of champions can reasonably build that item in the first place.
  • More 1v9 potential. Because there's so much less CC by comparison to dota, and champion counters aren't as hard as in dota, a single player can completely take over a game and win versus multiple opponents at once single-handedly. This can be really, really exciting and it's one of the high points of League that makes the game addictive.
  • Having to recall (teleport to base for mana/health/buy items) actually can be kinda nice too, by comparison. It lets you take a breather and just look over the state of the game while you walk back to lane.
  • Being able to see on the tab scoreboard what items and creep score people have is really, really nice. It's really fucking annoying in Dota having to click champion portraits to see what items they have, and if you click ANYTHING else it hides it again so you have to do it while standing still or moving in a straight line. Probably dota loyalists will say this is part of the skill of the game, but honestly imo it's just annoying/bad UI design that people sort of just got used to and became convinced was "part of the game."
  • Skillshots! In Dota most abilities are just unit targeted or AOE, while disjointing does exist, aiming isn't really as big a mechanic. There ARE abilities you have to aim, which in league we'd call skillshots, but they're far fewer. In league skillshots are kind of the norm, and aiming them and dodging them is a huge part of the game and it's fun to do so and makes you feel cool when you land them or dodge them. Having nearly everything be unit targeted isn't bad, it's just different, but it is something I enjoy a lot in League.
  • You can buy as many wards as you want. I hate having to share wards with the team in dota, and the store being out of them. I understand it's part of the game and managing that is part of the skill of dota, but I find it tedious and don't really enjoy it as a mechanic. Similarly, in League basic wards don't take up an inventory slot and instead get their own special slot like TP scrolls in Dota, which is really nice. It's pretty frustrating losing an inventory slot to wards.
  • Manaless champions. There are a couple dozen champions in League that don't use mana, and many people enjoy playing them. Dota doesn't really have that.
  • Simplicity. League has a smaller and simpler map, fewer mechanics, FAR fewer active item abilities, and more rigidity to its champion roles and how the game is played in soloqueue. Dota is kind of intimidating to learn from the sheer amount of stuff it has going on. Not everyone has the time or interest for it all.
  • Rotating game modes. ARAMs (all random all mid: a constant 5v5 teamfight on a map that only has one lane in the form of a bridge connecting the two teams' bases and nowhere else to go) are pretty great. Dota's modes seem to be a bit more static and homogenous, but idk, it's possible I just haven't been playing long enough yet?
  • Better champion skins, frankly. Some of League's skins are just amazing, and they ALL come with complete visual makeovers for all of the champion's abilities. While you can buy individual ability effect cosmetics in Dota, the options are somewhat limited by comparison. Any skin purchase in League will redo all the abilities to varying extents. Sometimes it's a small change, but higher-end skins make very significant changes. Dota does have some cool skins and a ton of cool minor cosmetics, but I would say League wins here.
Conclusions:
On the whole I'd say there's more things to like about Dota than about League just in sheer quantity of bullet points, but I love both games and I think they're both really fun. If Dota improved their lore, their animations, and their tab screen and League improved their cosmetics store and their map and added neutral items, the talent tree, and agh's shard & scepter, I wouldn't really have any major complaints about either of them.
To not find one as fun as the other, sure, that's normal, but to expend energy hating the other one and constantly shitting on it, that just confuses me. You can have a favorite while still acknowledging the other as a comparably enjoyable game.
One final note - one of the things I found most interesting about comparing them is seeing which mechanics are normal in one game that would be overpowered in the other game.
In League there is a champion named Zilean whose ult is to enchant an ally such that if they die in the next 5 seconds they're resurrected - basically Aegis, but on a one minute cooldown, for anyone on your team who needs it. Zilean would likely have a >90% wr in dota.
But then in Dota Nature's Prophet's teleport has a 90s/60s/30s cooldown and he can access it from level one if he chooses to, and eventually has a talent that removes its cooldown completely. Meanwhile this exists in League as one of the strongest ults in the game and with one of the longest cooldowns of any champion ability. Nature's prophet would have a >90% wr in League.

2024.05.14 20:29 one-with-zhen [Complete] [99k] [Fantasy] Spirit's Coda - Cultivation / Progression Fantasy (Eastern fantasy)

Hey all, looking for Beta readers and potential critique partners as well for my novel. It's a cultivation progression fantasy that is based on Ancient China. The closest I can think of is: Codex Alera meets Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Here's my blurb:
In a world where spirits are revered as gods, Lu Na, the daughter of Taimen's Governor, dares to defy them with her inventions. Her freedom to invent is stifled after her father sells her in marriage to a stranger she's never met. Lu Na flees her home with the help of a secret organization, the 100 Women Warriors, only to discover that the world outside is far more dangerous than she thought. The Wintersweet Sect, a group that reveres spirits, has set out to hunt Lu Na for her corrupting inventions. To survive, Lu Na must work with a mysterious monk and the leader of 100 Women Warriors to liberate herself. But can she succeed when her inventions cannot measure up to the overwhelming forces of summoners whose spirits can change reality itself?
Chapter 1: Spirit's Coda - Chapter 1 - New Invention, New Problem
The type of feedback I'm looking for is pacing and cultural references. It's written from an Ancient Chinese culture where there are some nuances most westerners don't get. I'm interested where it can get confusing for readers if I didn't explain enough in the writing.
I'm also interested in general reader reaction as well. I am interested If there are any parts that aren't working for you or it stops you from reading.
My preferred timeline is within a month. I'm not looking for line edits (unless you are so enthralled to do so). I'm also fine with if you want to drop it if it becomes something that isn't what you want to read. That's actually really important for me to know as well where people might be dropping my novel.
I'm also open to swaps and finding critique partners. My goal is to improve my writing and I have been looking for critique partners, hopefully within the same vein or type of writing I do as well.

FLOWER OF LIFE: ANCIENT GEOMETRIC ENIGMA
Flower of Life: An Ancient Geometric Enigma
By Roc Hatfield for ATLANTIUM AI
https://preview.redd.it/wnrh22zj0e0d1.jpg?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81aec713e7116c528dee99456f9aefc05220f46b
For over six millennia, a mysterious geometric pattern known as the "Flower of Life" has appeared in various cultures around the world, etched into ancient Egyptian temples and Chinese structures. This intricate design, composed of overlapping circles arranged in a flower-like pattern, has captivated the imaginations of scholars, philosophers, and scientists for centuries. Today, a new generation of researchers is delving into its secrets, proposing that this ancient symbol may hold the key to understanding the fundamental structure of the universe.
A Timeless Mystery
The Flower of Life is more than just an artistic motif; it is a complex representation that has appeared in sacred sites across different civilizations. In Egypt, it can be found in the Temple of Osiris at Abydos, while in China, similar patterns have been discovered on ancient artifacts. The design's presence in such diverse cultures suggests a universal significance, one that has prompted thinkers from various eras to explore its potential meanings.
Historically, many of the world's greatest minds have been drawn to the Flower of Life, dedicating their lives to unraveling its mysteries. From Leonardo da Vinci, who meticulously studied its geometry, to mathematicians and mystics who saw in it a symbol of the interconnectedness of all life, the Flower of Life has been a source of endless fascination and speculation.
Modern Insights: A Cosmic Blueprint?
In recent years, contemporary researchers have revisited the Flower of Life with fresh eyes, utilizing advances in mathematics, physics, and computer modeling. Some propose that the pattern is not merely a decorative symbol but a blueprint for the underlying structure of the cosmos. They suggest that the Flower of Life may represent a universal grid of energy, an invisible framework upon which all matter and energy—both seen and unseen—are organized.
This hypothesis resonates with the ancient Hermetic principle of "as above, so below," which posits that patterns observed in the macrocosm are reflected in the microcosm. In this view, the Flower of Life could be seen as a map of the universe's fundamental architecture, revealing a harmonious order that spans from the smallest subatomic particles to the vast expanses of space.
The Geometry of Creation
At the heart of the Flower of Life lies its geometric perfection. The pattern is constructed from circles that overlap in a precise manner, creating a series of symmetrical shapes, including hexagons and the vesica piscis, a shape that has been associated with mystical and mathematical significance. Some researchers believe that this geometry encodes information about the fundamental constants of nature, such as the speed of light, the gravitational constant, and the fine-structure constant.
Furthermore, the Flower of Life's geometry is thought to be related to the Platonic solids—five polyhedra that Plato associated with the classical elements of earth, air, fire, water, and ether. These solids are the only perfectly symmetrical three-dimensional shapes, and they form the basis for much of the natural world's structure, from crystals to molecular formations. The Flower of Life, with its intricate web of interlocking circles, may thus serve as a two-dimensional representation of these three-dimensional forms, offering a bridge between the abstract world of mathematical ideals and the tangible reality we experience.
Implications for Science and Spirituality
The potential implications of the Flower of Life extend beyond the realm of abstract theory. If indeed this ancient symbol encodes a deeper understanding of the universe's structure, it could provide a new framework for unifying disparate fields of scientific inquiry. Physicists searching for a "theory of everything" might find clues within its geometry, while biologists and chemists could uncover new insights into the patterns that govern the natural world.
Moreover, the Flower of Life's resurgence in contemporary thought highlights a growing interest in the intersections between science and spirituality. As researchers explore the boundaries of quantum mechanics, string theory, and consciousness, the idea that ancient wisdom and modern science can inform each other is gaining traction. The Flower of Life serves as a potent reminder that the quest for knowledge is a timeless journey, one that bridges the past and the future, the seen and the unseen.
In conclusion, the Flower of Life continues to be a source of wonder and inspiration, inviting us to look deeper into the nature of reality. Whether it is a literal blueprint for the cosmos or a symbolic representation of universal truths, this ancient geometric design challenges us to expand our understanding of the world and our place within it. As we stand on the cusp of new discoveries, the Flower of Life may yet reveal its secrets, offering a glimpse into the profound order that underlies the universe.

2024.05.14 13:14 kris_lace Frequently asked questions

Q: Do UFOs exist?

A: Yes. The way humanity interprets the word 'fact' is for the observation to be independently verified by a community which often includes evidence and supporting material. For UFOs, multiple governments, agencies such as NASA and key scientist/astronaut/military personnel have independently affirmed the existence of UFOs. Famously multiple presidents of the US have been quoted to acknowledge them as well.
Note: Be wary, as with enough scrutiny almost any claim can be reduced and dissected to the point where almost any 'fact' can be questioned, UFOs are no different. Using the term 'fact' in a society of subjective sentient beings is a logical slippery slope. But we can certainly say, as far as the word and loose interpretation of the word 'fact' goes, it is a fact that UFO's exist.

Q: Do aliens exist?

A: Almost certainly, the majority of the scientific community agrees it would be astronomically unlikely for terrestrial life to exist in isolation. Despite significant observations of life living in seemingly impossible inhospitable environments on earth, critics rightfully question "if life is abundant, why have we not seen it yet".

Q: Are the UFOs we see due to alien visitation?

A: The strategy to answer questions which don't have scientific consensus is to logically consider it with the information we do have, making the fewest assumptions with the available facts. As with the case of the visitation hypothesis, we can consider many angles and reach a logically sound position.
Most of you know that out of a sample of 100 reported sightings, only a handful are truly anomalous, the vast majority being misreported as known origin. Of the handful left we can say these are anomalous genuine UAPs. Of these, we must first consider the least assumptions and first look to whether they are anomalous in nature, but human in origin.
Before we can do that we need to briefly discuss the credibility of witness testimony. Society places a significant credibility with witness testimony. People's lives can be judged based on the testimony of a witness, such as in the case of a murder trial. Indeed the vast majority of our entire scientific understanding is based on experimental data and whilst such data is often from instruments and computers there is often a human element. Ultimately a human witnesses the experiment and records the measurements and readings. Many things can affect the credibility of a witness testimony and of particular significance are independent witnesses reporting the same observation. As is the case with the scientific methodology and 'reproduced experiments'.
To Ufologists, a large component of lore and supplementary evidence to the existence of UAPs is built on witness testimony. We should consider events such as Rendlesham Forest where a sighting was reported by multiple expert, trained military personnel who are specifically trained in identifying even advanced aircraft and weather phenomena. A report based on multiple trained, sane personnel with consistent observations to the description of a UAP sighting is what we would call a water tight witness testimony. Such a testimony would be ruled true in any court for a petty crime or murder scandal for example.
However, on the topic of "NHI" our sample size of witness testimony is lower than the case for UAPs. The cases of multiple, credible witnesses coming forward with testimony for the case of NHI are less and I struggle to think of a good example. (Please drop any in the comments).
However, in the case of supposed NHI visitations we do have a colourful array of high ranking officials and representatives of military or government who have disclosed personally that they knew of NHI visitations.
In these cases the credibility is more individually focused on the trustworthiness of the person rather than a coherent multiple sighting event. We must consider such testimony carefully for there are many logical explanations for such testimony being false.
For example, David Grusch is a high profile contemporary whistle-blower who has claimed the existence of NHI. Using purely logic and removing any emotional or subjective intuition we can consider at least one likely explanation for his testimony. It's very possible that Grusch is operating as per a larger more convoluted Psy-Ops on behalf of the government. We know he is a very diligent patriot with a pristine record and presents as the perfect soldier to take one for the team and blow his career and personal circumstances to lie under oath and rattle off something he's been asked to say for some greater agenda to serve his country. Such agendas we can only speculate on, but domestic manipulation of the public as well as cold-war game theory plays against adversary countries such as China. Obviously such a hypothesis is fantastical and imaginative. But so is the NHI visitation hypothesis and a global conspiracy. For those versed in the US's history of Psy-ops, particularly in the case of the CIA and NSA - such an operation involving Grusch as a false agent is absolutely consistent with some of their previous endeavours.
Disclaimer: I am not disproving Grusch, my personal opinion is he is likely telling the truth. But I am allowed my personal opinion and my personal opinion is you cannot guarantee his legitimacy without the application of some element of faith. I have always been extremely careful whenever faith is introduced to objective deductions. I hope we all are. I don't operate with beliefs so I can't answer whether I believe in Grusch or not. But I can consider both sides as a matter of consistent statistical likelihood and it's much healthier for me to assume both possibilities going forward rather than feeling the very precarious and human desire to conclude. Again I hope this is something that is common practice amongst my peers.
So answering the question of NHI having operated the UAPs we know to exist is ongoing. So far we have explored the very likely idea that life exists outside the earth. We have also considered witness testimony and found that whilst witness testimony is credible in many scenarios, it's particularly problematic to be relied on in this case. Of course Grusch is not the only one who's claimed NHI visitations but our analysis on him is applicable to others.
There is good hope for the Alien hypothesis, but first more bad news. If we believe Grusch and similar witness testimony (in Grusch's case he's not a direct witness). We must also consider that these same witnesses also claim a US government UAP project. Depending on the witnesses and whistle-blower testimony, we either have a reverse engineering capacity of UAPs to even a downright working production of UAPs ourselves. So when we consider the handful of genuine anomalous sightings for every 100 reports, when we apply further statistical analysis, we now need to account for the likelihood such sighting (especially near air force bases or military facilities) may just be human operating UAP experiments.
Obviously we have a paradox "you can't refute the NHI origin hypothesis by saying they're humans, if humans only have the technology because we reverse engineered it" and that is true so let's be clear. Using statistics and logic we may say that a truly anomalous sighting may be humans operating craft. But we may also say that craft may have been inspired by a NHI origin.
So far the answer is skewed slightly towards the likelihood of the NHI hypothesis to be false. However there is a very compelling element to the facts that critics of the NHI hypothesis struggle with.
We have a very clear and comprehensive record of UAPs in history which predates a reasonable likelihood of us having the technology at that time. Obviously the endeavours of the ancient astronaut hypothesis is colourful, fantastical and well refuted. But amongst the popularly scrutinized theory there are strong elements of logical significance. Almost all religions and teachings of native indigenous people overwhelming talk of people coming from the sky in craft, appearing different in their looks, possessing knowledge and technology and interacting with early humans. Such stories are controversial of course but enough of them exist to merit consideration.
But much more relevant to us in this argument is the existence of the Project Bluebook and the incidents which inspired its necessity. For those that aren't aware it's common knowledge to Ufologists as the allied investigations into apparently very common UAP reports known as foo fighters observed by pilots during the word war.
Our logic tells us that if any global human power at the time had that capability we would have used it. The reason for that is because as soon as we had the atomic bomb capability we used that. It's absurd to assume that a human government was responsible for the UAPs in the bluebook but didn't use them, but would use an atom bomb. It's absurd but we must remember, history is littered with absurd events that did happen. So we don't rule it out, but it more or less provides a significant and compelling argument to the NHI hypothesis for UAPs. In simple terms, they existed before we could have created them. We deduce that, because if we had UAP tech we would have used it before needing to rely on atom bombs.
Ultimately if you want an answer it has two parts; a pragmatic answer and then a severe personal caveat.
Part one: Pragmatism
For any truly anomalous sighting, it very well may be of human origin dabbling in potential NHI tech. It also may be of NHI origin. We don't have clear enough evidence to know. Whilst US military officials claim they don't have the tech or that their adversaries don't, belief of that position requires faith as they do not provide a logical argument for their hypothesis. But if we look back at the sightings throughout history it becomes more and more likely the sightings were of NHI origin.
Part two: Caveat
My personal caveat is that some FAQ's shouldn't have conclusive answers. Our scientific method which underpins our most prestigious and rigorous institution of science in the world; does not always conclude. Sometimes a question has multiple likely answers and it will take more information to reduce those to one answer. I emphatically preach this is an attitude we employ as Ufologists as ultimately we are a community of speculators and researchers. So let's leave faith at the door.

Q: Why can supposed advanced beings master interdimensional/intergalactic space traversal but then crash land on earth like amateurs?

A: This question usually has a very loaded and dangerous assumption which I don't think we can make without careful consideration. The question implies that UFOs crash landing is as problematic to NHI as it would be to us. If a military pilot crashes a plane, they may die and as an asset they are worth hundreds of millions to the government, big loss. Additionally the plane they used is extremely expensive too and may have trade secrets. For us, a pilot crash landing is a huge net loss in life and assets. When we consider the idea of UAP crash landing we are applying our human bias on them.
Firstly, the UAP may be being operated by AI, biological artificial intelligence, pilotless etc. Even if there's a biologic body inside it's very possible the actual sentient pilot was operating the body remotely the same way we operate robots remotely. The biological body left behind may be like a robot we left on the moon which we used remotely to navigate the lunar landscape. Our operators don't die if the robot is broken.
Additionally, the craft itself is likely not a multi billion dollar craft. It's probably extremely cheaply made with the avenue of advanced technology. The 4chan whistle-blower (whether you believe them or not) introduced a logically sound idea that a craft was in the sea making purpose built UAPs all the time and sending them on missions. The "mother craft" just mines the materials it needs from our sea floor and pops out a UAP, it's probably entirely automated.
Little fiction here but it paints a story which is good to consider. Imagine a un manned probe lands in the sea after having identified using photo spectrometry that our planet has certain elements. It lands and the AI finds a spot in the sea away from detention and starts mining for a probe craft. It mines and creates a probe craft. The probe craft goes out and does some recon and then either makes new craft for whatever but eventually instigates a protocol which fires up the organic biological 'pilots' which are either artificial purpose built intelligence or biological vehicles operated by remote consciousness which a sentient life form will operate from afar. Then these guys go and crash whether it's a magnetic anomaly or something else and the NHI doesn't really care and are hardly inconvenienced.
It's possible to encapsulate or hide or lock the main functions of their technology upon crashing in the same way that our advanced technology may self destruct if crash landed in a foreign land. There's also speculation that some secret key is needed to operate them.
That is all fiction, but it paints a compelling alternative to us just projecting our bias on the crash hypothesis.
Remember, to a civilization that in theory has automated its outreach reconnaissance, the most pristine system design for their drones and vehicles isn't to somehow guarantee 100% crash proof technology. But instead it's to assume crashes will happen and make sure they're not damaging nor give away their tech too much.

Q: Can we simulate or 'fake' UFO's in the sky?

A: Yes to an extent. Using lasers we have technology to create lights that can move. However radar is another matter.

Q: Why haven't we had material evidence of UAP's released to the public?

A: Grusch has kind of answered this by saying that destabilisation factors are too great.
And for those interested, this post comprehensively considers this angle and attempts to explain in layman terms why disclosure is so complicated for a government and what those reasons mean.

Q: Is there an alternative to official disclosure and catastrophic disclosure?

A: Yes, I believe there's a route forward that a community such as this one can start making progress on. With the introduction to a pragmatic disclosure which has a simple goal; remove the 'valid' reasons that disclosure is being hidden and it will no longer be hidden.

2024.05.14 06:43 purbadeo वीर भड़ Madho Singh Bhandari of Maletha (Uttarakhand)

वीर भड़ Madho Singh Bhandari of Maletha (Uttarakhand)
Kalo Singh Bhandari had won wars against Champawat, and the Mughals. In the case of the Mughals, he had engineered victories not against vassals but against Delhi Darbar itself. A mere Thakur of a small Pahadi village, the man was a living legend. But his greatest victory was not on the battlefield but in fatherhood, for his son would go on to be the finest of the Bhads of Garhwal. Madhav Singh Bhandari has many folk tales attached to him, as he has over time become a legend - a mixture of myth and historical record. So I will just focus on what I have the strongest arguments on for the historical Bhandari.
He debuts at the court in Srinagar during the reign of Man Shah (1591-1611). He served multiple Panwar kings but it seems his political influence was highest under Man Shah and Mahipat Shah, as the vast majority of accounts and folk tales associated with Bhandari use these two kings to tell the period of the setting.
His first notable achievement was building an irrigation system which included a hand chiseled tunnel which transformed the agriculture of his village. This made the village richer, and brought Bhandari to the King’s attention.
Madho Singh Bhandari saw action against the Mughal vassals, Sirmour, Kumoun, and most famously Tibet.
Tibet controls the headwaters of the Sindhu, Brahmaputra, Me Kong, Yangtze, and Huang He rivers. Which means it controls the water for the vast majority of Asia’s population and power centers. Additionally it sits on the edge of South Asia, placing it on the Silk Road. Thus, the Tibetan Empire was an extremely influential power in Asia. However, Tibet did not have control over the headwaters of the Ganga. The Katyuri Empire had recognized Tibet’s ambitions, and had constructed forts and fortification clusters around the Gangetic headwaters. After the fall of Katyur, these Garhs (forts) became petty-states, over time united by the Panwar Dynasty of Kedarkhand to form the Kingdom of Garhwal.
Garhwal was a smaller, and poorer adversary than Katyur which at its peak could mobilize resources from Kabul to Sikkim to fight the Tibetan Empire. Thus, encroachment much like China today became standard practice. Raids devastated lives and the economy of Northeastern Garhwal. A Legendary Bhad, Ranu Singh Raut, would lead a young Madho into his first war against Tibet. Influenced by Raut, Man Shah sent Bhandari to capture Sirmour to serve as a strategic zone against Tibet. Bhandari like his mentor had an eye for talent, he picked a legendary core of officers that would serve him for decades, chief among them was the behemoth Rokhela Singh Lodhi. The team now assembled, Bhandari and Raut went on another round with Tibet.
Bhandari and Lodhi in coordination with Raut smashed Sirmour, and the imperial forces of the Highlands. Raut’s strategy and pupils secured Garhwal’s borders. However, a betrayal cost Raut his life in Himachal during the Sirmour campaign.
Bhandari and Lodhi would later go on campaign against Rohilkhand, and Kumoun under the Lion Shyam Shah. The Maharaja would meet martyrdom against the eternal rival Kumoun, leaving throne to his brother “Garbh Bhanjan” Mahipat Shah.
Bhandari saw action on all borders during this time, as Mahipat was more quarrelsome than his quarrelsome brother. It is during this time, somewhere between 1611-1621, that Bhandari oversaw the completion of his mentor Raut’s strategy. While Lodhi captured Sirmour, Bhandari led 12,000 Rajput Warriors into Western Tibet, and achieved victory in the highlands. The war was costly, many Bhads lost, and the return of Bhandari and his men became the origin of the festival of Bagwaali. Bhandari established the modern border between Tibet and Garhwal, which have been inherited by China and India, at the conclusion of this campaign.
Madho Singh Bhandari retired from court, and died while meditating from a rock slide near Maletha sometime during Mahipat Shah’s reign. His village bore his legacy as it had been transformed from a poor backwater into the capital of a major Thikana. Even today it’s farms are lush due to the ancient irrigation system, and a temple dedicated to Madho Singh Bhandari stands on its outskirts.
To get an idea of Bhandari’s ability, compare him to his peers. He did not die due to courtroom politics like Raut, and Lodhi. He did not die in battle like Shyam and Mahipat Shah. In the field of Middle Age politics and war where men die young, Madho Singh managed to retire. His engineering background must have also helped him in navigating the connectivity and supply chain challenges of the Himmalayas. He displayed an eye for empowering the right talent, and the ability to execute plans to completion over a long and arduous time period.
This is why in Garhwal we remember the name Madho Singh Bhandari.

2024.05.14 05:13 Mediocre_Pea_6845 Do you remember the first movie that made you cry? For me, it was - Lai Shi, China's Last Eunuch

Do you remember the first movie that made you cry? For me, it was - Lai Shi, China's Last Eunuch
Eunuchs, or ‘non-men’ as they could be known, first appeared in the royal courts of ancient pre-imperial Chinese states where they were employed as servants in the inner chambers of the palace. They were more or less slaves and were usually acquired as children from border territories, especially those to the south.
Castrated and brought to serve the royal household, they had no real means of altering their lives. Eunuchs were regarded as the most trustworthy of servants because they could neither seduce women of the household or father children which might form a dynasty to rival that of the sitting emperor’s.
A eunuch’s duties, therefore, included exclusively serving the women of the royal palace. Any other males were forbidden from staying overnight in the palace, and any person who entered unauthorised faced the death penalty. Eunuchs acted as fetchers and carriers, bodyguards, nurses, and essentially performed the roles of valets, butlers, maids, and cooks combined. Despite their privileged position, the general public’s view of eunuchs was extremely negative as they were regarded as the lowest class of all servants.
In contrast to the confidence put in them by rulers, their physical deformity, disdain from the ruling class and the general stigma attached to them made eunuchs more likely to seek to exploit their privileged position and gain political influence within the court. The eunuchs would not be content with the life of a simple slave for very long. Often aligning themselves with the powerful Buddhist monasteries, they advised, spied, and intrigued in equal measure in order to acquire the top positions in the state apparatus.
From the early 15th century CE the eunuchs set up their own mini-bureaucracy at court where they could ferret away paperwork and filter out the input of government ministers in state affairs. It even included a secret service branch which could investigate corruption or identify suspects who might plot against the status quo and imprison, beat, and torture them if necessary in the prison the eunuchs had created for that purpose. At the end of the century, this eunuch-led apparatus had grown spectacularly to 12,000 employees, making it the equal of the official state bureaucracy. By the latter stages of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 CE) there were some 70,000 eunuchs, and they had established almost complete domination of the imperial court
The power they held and the political intrigues they often stirred up resulted in the eunuchs becoming infamous, and they were especially unpopular with Confucianist scholars. Huang Zongxi, the Ming dynasty Neo-Confucianist thinker here sums up the general view of eunuchs in Chinese history: "Everyone has known for thousands of years that eunuchs are like poison and wild beasts".

2024.05.14 04:06 StrangeTruth5155 Revisiting the cultural revolution: maoist and democratic socialist perspectives. Questions are welcome!

I am a democratic socialist with a good understanding of China, including its history during the Cultural Revolution. I've noticed that many people's perceptions of this historical event align with stereotypes that they don't necessarily like, which are often propagated by the current Chinese government. (Many leftists in China refer to the current regime as the Second Republic, with the Mao Zedong era being the First Republic).
Chinese Maoists believe that the Cultural Revolution was good and commendable. They argue that the main problems during the Cultural Revolution stemmed from the disruption caused by those within the party who pursued the capitalist road (revisionists). These revisionists disrupted the situation and, after their eventual victory (there are various interpretations of when this victory occurred, but it's mostly considered to be during the period when the Gang of Four was arrested and Deng Xiaoping took power), they rehabilitated the people they supported during the Cultural Revolution (many of whom were responsible for numerous atrocities during that time). Most of these rehabilitated individuals received favorable treatment; many of them are now either living as retired cadres in China or reside in Europe and the United States. You might have encountered some seemingly kind elderly Chinese individuals who, during that time, were known for wearing copper belts (a privilege exclusive to families of the ruling class at that time, and these privileged individuals' children commonly opposed the attacks on the revisionists during the Cultural Revolution, being labeled as "monarchists" who propagated the protection of the legacy established by their fathers, claiming that they were entitled to inherit all of it). They would use these belts to beat those who opposed them and would torture people in sports arenas using cruel methods learned from ancient Chinese texts. In summary, to Chinese Maoists, the Cultural Revolution was good and was a nationwide democratic movement initiated by Mao Zedong to prevent China from succumbing to revisionism and capitalism. Its main problems arose from the disruption caused by revisionists.
However, it's important to note that I don't agree entirely with the views of Maoists. I'm presenting this to offer a completely different perspective on the Cultural Revolution. My personal viewpoint is more aligned with the leftist perspective, meaning I believe that the intentions behind the Cultural Revolution were good. It was a product of Mao Zedong's fear in his later years that the socialist regime would be replaced by capitalism, and it was a manifestation of his early anarchist ideas, reflected in his theory of "continuing the revolution." However, Mao Zedong underestimated the strength of the opposition from revisionists and, more importantly, failed to grasp the role of political order, resulting in the extreme chaos of the Cultural Revolution, which was ultimately fatal. Mao's responsibility for this failure is undeniable, but his contributions to the development of Leninism have inspired many within the current leftist community.
My thoughts may be somewhat scattered, so I might not have fully addressed what everyone wants to know. Feel free to ask me questions directly in this post, and I will respond.

Artist of Prythian map: P-dulcis on redbubble

The Ancient Greeks used the term Illyria to define a region in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula. The numerous peoples who populated those areas were known collectively as the Illyrians. The region itself is quite mountainous.
THE MIDDLE
May refer to the Midlands, the central part of England, though geographically the Prythian map places the Middle central to Prythian, not central to England; with the Prythian inclusion of Scotland, the Middle on Prythian maps is located further north than the actual Midlands of England.
UNDER THE MOUNTAIN
A potential nod to the Schiehallion, a cone-shaped mountain often referred to as the center of Scotland. It's name comes from the Gaelic Sìth Chailleann, meaning "fairy hill of the Caledonians." On the southwestern side of the mountain is said to lie the well-concealed Uamh Tom a' Mhòr-fhir, a cave serving as an entrance to the underworld.
Note: As the Schiehallion lies in the middle of Scotland (the Night Court) and not the middle of mainland UK (Prythian), the Sciehallion could instead be representative of Ramiel.
THE WESTERN ISLES
May refer to the Outer Hebrides, also known as the Western Isles, which is an island chain off the west coast of mainland Scotland. They are also sometimes known as Innse Gall, a Gaelic term meaning "islands of the foreigners/strangers" which was originally used by mainland Highlanders when the islands were ruled by the Norse.
ACOTAR role: The Prison is located in the Western Isles.
THE PRISON
Though located in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland rather than the Outer, the Prison may be a nod to Beinn Shiantaidh, which is Scottish Gaelic for "holy mountain." It is located on the western side of the Island of Jura and is the second highest peak of the Paps of Jura.
Fun fact: Pap is of Old Norse origin and means breast.

THE BLACK LAND
Black Land translates from Kemet, a popular ancient name for Egypt, which is derived from the color of the fertile black soil along the cultivated area of the Nile valley.

ADDITIONAL LOCATIONS

VELARIS
Possibly derived from the Latin vēlo, meaning "to veil, cover, wrap" along with "to hide, conceal" and "to clothe in." Could also derive from the Latin vēlum, meaning "to veil, curtain" and also indicates a tarpaulin acting as cover for outdoor spaces.
THE WALL
No singular reference, but the presence of a wall separating one race from another, often humans from mythical beings, is rife throughout history, mythology, and fantasy.
One from each category that has loose ties to ACOTAR: (1) Hadrian's Wall, ie the Roman Wall, a defensive fortification of the Roman province of Britannia. It spanned from coast to coast, cutting across the entire width of Northern England. (2) In Norse mythology, the Master Builder asking for the hand of the goddess Freyja as payment for constructing a wall around Asgard to defend the gods. (3) The English village of Wall in Neil Gaiman's Stardust, named after the wall separating the land of Faerie from the mortal realm, highly guarded and cautioned against for mortals seeking to pass through.
THE MOONSTONE PALACE
Romans linked moonstone to the moon goddess Diana (goddess of wild animals and the hunt) and Ancient Greeks linked it to their lunar deities Artemis, Hecate, and Selene.
SIDRA RIVER
Sidra is a name of Latin origin and means "Goddess of the stars" or "like a star."
RAMIEL
Ramiel is a fallen Watcher, a type of Biblical angel, one of the 20 Watchers that rebelled against God by mating with mortal women, therefore creating the Nephilim (Shadowhunters, anyone?). Ramiel means "God has thundered." Ramiel is sometimes conflated with Remiel, also known as Jeremiel, meaning "God shall have mercy," as is listed as one of the seven Holy Angels. He is the archangel of hope and is responsible for divine visions and guiding the souls of the faithful into Heaven.
POOL OF STARLIGHT
No plausible connection found, though there is a famous pool in Greek mythology—a pool Mnemosyne presided over in Hades, counterpart to the river Lethe. Dead souls would drink from Lethe to wipe their past lives from remembrance when reincarnated. Those who drank from Mnemosyne's pool remembered and halted their transmigration of the soul.
ATHELWOOD
Ethel (also aethel) is an Old English word meaning "noble." Athelwood can mean "noblewood."
ACOTAR role: Morrigan's estate located in the Night Court.
GOLLIAN MOUNTAINS
Göll is one of the named Valkyries from Norse mythology. Her name means "tumult," or "noise, battle."

MYRMIDONS
In Ancient Greek mythology, the Myrmidons were an Ancient Greek tribe. In the Iliad, they are the soldiers commanded by Achilles. Myrmidon has also come to mean "a follower or subordinate of a powerful person, typically one who is unscrupulous or carries out orders unquestioningly."
ACOTAR role: A set of mountains serving as the border between the Day Court and the Night Court from which the Illyrians migrated.
CESERA
No direct reference found, but may allude to Caesarea, the name of numerous cities and locations throughout the Roman Empire.
ACOTAR role: One of three temples where the feet of the Cauldron were hidden.
SANGRAVAH
No direct reference found (and I lost my mind searching for one). Closest I came to was the similarly sounding Angharad, a feminine Welsh name, long associated with Welsh royalty, history, and myth, including Arthurian legend.
ACOTAR role: One of three temples where the feet of the Cauldron were hidden.
GREENFIELD VILLAGE
No direct connection found, though Greenfield is the name of several villages of England.
ACOTAR role: A neighboring village to where Feyre grew up and where Isaac Hale's wife is from.
WINDHAVEN CAMP
No connection found, though a separate Windhaven also appears in Tower of Dawn in the TOG series. Altun—Windhaven being the rough translation—is located in a three-peaked mountain range and is the home of Sartaq's hearth-mother and family.
Fun fact: Windhaven is the name of a science-fiction novel by George R. R. Martin and Lisa Tuttle following a group of humans who crash-landed on a foreign planet and learned to craft their own wings out of the spaceship wreckage.
THE WOLF'S DEN
No connection found, BUT fun fact: there is a named Wolf's Den castle in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series (aka Game of Thrones) that now serves as a prison. "All the days were much the same inside the Wolf's Den, and any change was usually for the worse." A Dance with Dragons, Ch 29
ACOTAR role: The name of the worst tavern in Velaris that Nesta is known to frequent.
SILVERSPRING CREEK
No plausible connection found, BUT fun fact: "Silver Springs" is a song written by Stevie Nicks, performed by Fleetwood Mac, and is so strongly ACOTAR-coded even my non-loving playlist-to-book self can't deny it. If you want more bread crumbles that SJM is a Stevie Nicks fan, "Rhiannon" and it's lyric origins have potential ties to the Rhiannon of TOG.
You could be my silver spring
Blue-green colors flashin'
I would be your only dream
Your shinin' autumn ocean crashin'
Time cas t a spell on you,
but you won't forget me
I know I could have loved you
But you would not let me
ACOTAR role: Silverspring Creek is a stream running through Feyre's human village, near where she hunted rabbits.
STRYGA'S CASTLE
No direct reference found, but due to Stryga/the Weaver resembling a female demon akin to a vampire in Slavic mythology (see the Monster section above), it is possible Stryga's former home, before she was confined to her cottage, is reminiscent of Bram Stoker's 1897 Dracula and the Transylvanian Castle complete with three vampiric sister brides who entice men with their beauty and charm before proceeding to feed upon them.

The Night Sky

ARKTOS
Arktos, also written Arctus, means "bear" in Ancient Greek. Arktos was a centaur who fought against the Lapith spearmen. The Arktos Megale (aka Ursa Major, the Great Bear) is one of the original 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy who drew on earlier works by Greek, Egyptian, Babylonian, and Assyrian astronomers.
ACOTAR role: One of the three regarded holy stars (the furthest left star) of the Illyrians and serves as part of the symbol for the Night Court. The echelon of Arktosian is reserved for Illyrians who survive the Blood Right but fail to reach Ramiel.
CARYNTH
May refer to Corinth, an ancient city that was one of the largest and most important of Greece, or Carinthia, the southernmost Austrian state in the Eastern Alps, noted for its mountains and lakes.
ACOTAR role: One of the three regarded holy stars (the middle star) of the Illyrians and serves as part of the symbol for the Night Court. The echelon of Carynthian is reserved for Illyrians who scale the summit of Ramiel during the Blood Rite and are considered elite warriors.
ORISTES
Orestes (also spelled Orestes) means "stands on a mountain" and he is the subject of several Ancient Greek plays and myths concerning his madness and purification.
ACOTAR role: One of the three regarded holy stars (the furthest right star) of the Illyrians and serves as part of the symbol for the Night Court. The echelon of Oristian is reserved for Illyrians who make it to the Ramiel during the Blood Rite but don't reach the top.
Locations not listed: A slew of various more minor locations have not been listed, including the Four Market Squares of Velaris, certain cottages and houses, and even the Ironcrest Illyrian war-camp.

THE CAULDRON
There are many magical cauldrons present in various mythologies, one being the Pair Dadeni in Welsh mythology, a magical cauldron able to resurrect the dead, and the coire ansic of Irish mythology, the cauldron of the chief god of the Tuatha Dé Danann, which never ran empty.
TRUTH-TELLER
Possibly inspired by Fragarach, an Irish mythological sword known as "The Whisperer" or "The Answerer." It was the sword of Nuada, the first high king; it was said that no one could tell a lie with Fragarach at their throat and that the sword inflicting wounds from which no one could recover.
THE HARP
May refer to the uaithne, the magical harp of the Dagda, the chief god of the Tuatha Dé Danann in Irish mythology. It could control men's emotions and change the seasons.
THE MASK
In Egyptian culture, death masks were designed to guide the spirits of those mummified into the next world.
THE UNKNOWN 4th TROVE ITEM
Seen in a vision by Nesta via Lathys, which we now know to be the Horn, and may refer to the Gjallarhorn of Norse mythology, the sound of which is said to herald the beginning of Ragnarok.
ATARAXIA
Ataraxia, in Ancient Greek philosophy, was a state of calmness untroubled by mental or emotional disquiet, ie tranquility of the mind. It was considered the ideal mental state for soldiers entering battle.
ACOTAR Role: Nesta's Made sword.
GWYDION
Gwydion is a name meaning "born of the trees" and is the given name of Gwydion fab Dôn, a magician, hero, and trickster of Welsh mythology. Caer Wydion, the castle of Gwydion, was the traditional Welsh name for the Milky Way.
ACOTAR role: The Starsword and twin to Truth-Teller.
NARBEN
No direct reference found, though narben in German means "scar."
ACOTAR role: A lost sword from the Dread Trove.
OUROBOROS MIRROR
The ouroboros is an ancient symbol of a serpent or a dragon eating its own tale, first present in ancient Egyptian iconography and the Greek magical tradition, the term itself deriving from Ancient Greek. It has been used frequently and extensively throughout fantasy literature. It often symbolizes the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
BOOK OF BREATHINGS
The Books of Breathing are a set of ancient Egyptian funerary texts that are intended to enable those deceased to continue their existence in the afterlife. It is a simplified form of the Book of the Dead.
VERITAS ORB
Veritas is of Latin origin meaning "truth." It is the name for the Roman virtue of truthfulness and in Roman mythology, Veritas is the Goddess of Truth. Universities and colleges such as Harvard use the term veritas as their motto.
SYMPHONIA
Symphonia is Greek in origin and was used to denote a variety of musical instruments.
AMARANTHA'S NECKLACE AND RING (JURIAN'S FINGER AND EYE)
Jurian's finger bone and eye, kept by Amarantha, are reminiscent of relics and reliquaries, often religious in nature. Relics typically consist of the physical remains or personal affects of a saint and the reliquary is the container that holds them.
FAEBANE
Possibly inspired by wolfsbane (aka aconite or monkshood), a poisonous flower ancient Greeks would poison arrows and bait with to hunt wolves. It is lethal and often fatal and is an oft-used plant and poison within the fantasy genre.
Fun fact: In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet himself was killed with an aconite-laced blade.

DAEMATI
Potentially a combination of the Greek word dae (to give) and the concept of mati, labeled as "the evil eye" in Greek classical antiquity. Daemati may effectively mean "to give the evil eye."
THE WEAVER'S SONG
The Weaver's song, sung when Feyre was stealing Rhysand's ring from her cottage, is similar to "The Twa Sisters," a traditional murder ballad dating back to mid 17th century England. It tells of two sisters who travel down to a body of water where the older one pushes the younger one in. A harp or a fiddle is then made out of the murdered sister's body, which plays itself and sings about her murder.

2024.05.13 23:50 Lisbeth_Salandar Peaches & Honey by R Raeta: love that lasts centuries

I just finished {Peaches & Honey: These Immortal Truths by R Raeta} and had to come straight here to rave about it!

Synopsis

Anna is a young, poor woman in England 1184, outcasted for her vitiligo. Struggling to survive on her own, she one day saves a girl in dire circumstances. This girl - actually a god in disguise - thanks her with the gift of a divine peach. Anna eats the entire thing, intrigued by its hollow center and lack of a seed. The peach grants Anna a gift: her wounds heal faster than they can kill her. But this gift comes with the challenges of outliving everyone she has ever known or will ever know. As the centuries pass, the only constant in her life is that her creator - Khiran - always returns to see her.

Review

The often-made comparison between this and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue are very apt. That book is pretty polarizing, but I actually liked it quite a bit. However, I liked this one even better. This is the first book in a duology.
This book was excellent for a lot of different reasons:
  • Beautiful, lyrical prose
  • Anna is a deserving and kindhearted FMC, with not an ounce of sass or irony
  • Khiran is an intriguing MMC, a powerful and somewhat depressed man who wishes to live in a world of Anna's creation
  • Khiran's chemistry with Anna leaps off the page
  • Lovely historical settings, cultures, time periods, and people give each chapter a fresh feel
  • More character driven than plot driven, but with characters this great, that's a good thing
  • Deeply romantic pining over centuries
  • Third person POV
My only complaints about this book are quite minor:
  • At some point, it does seem a little silly that Anna just so happens to experience many major world events that a freshman in high school would learn in history class. I mean, yeah she just so happens to be in London during Jack the Ripper and in the US during the Civil War and underground railroad and in Italy during the initial spread of the black plague and in Spain during the first circumnavigation of the world and expansion into the New World and in Boston during the Boston Tea Partyand she's in Germany leading up to WWII At some point those coincidences do seem improbable and very western-centric (only one chapter focuses on the east; a chapter on China and piracy).
  • In addition, there are a 4-5 times in the story that anachronisms pop up that really stood out to me; calling the War of the Rebellion / War for Southern Independence the "American Civil War" in the 1860s just doesn't make sense. Referring to German LGBTQ+ people as "gay" in the 1930s when that term just didn't exist in that context then...
These complaints are very minor, however, because the prose is so beautiful and the characters are so wonderful to read about and experience all these different events through their eyes. The occassional incorrect, anachronistic word used every hundred pages or so is truly not a stumbling block to enjoying this book.
I couldn't put this book down and I am very eager for book 2 to come out in early June!

This book is for you if you like:

  • Flowery, purple prose
  • Slow burn romances
  • Subtle, slow-moving fantasy elements
  • Historical time periods
  • Character-driven stories
  • Mature, complex, deeply human characters
  • The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and/or wanted a kinder, more loving version of that book
  • Books that are free on KU (and currently on sale if you wanna buy it)
  • Stories where even minor characters feel like real humans
  • Stories where the FMC is loved because of her genuine kindness rather than for her beauty or some inexplicable quality that draws others to her
  • Books featuring insecurity due to feeling like an outsider
  • A really cool take on magic / gods / powers that feels almost mythical

Quotes

That night, when she curls up under the blanket and lets the tears drip silently from her cheeks, she wonders how it’s possible to grieve the loss of something she never expected to have.
.
“What we want isn’t always what we need,” Eira says, setting the jar on the table before reaching out and setting her ancient hands on Anna’s shoulders. “Immortality is a fickle beast, dear girl. Stay too long in one place and you’ll rot there.” “But I’m happy—” “No,” she interrupts, “You’re not unhappy. It’s not the same.”
.
Truths are for those who can afford to live it, not for those struggling to find any bright spot of light in a world that casts them into darkness.
.
“It’s easy to be righteous, to be angry, when you weren’t there to see all the blood and misery that came before you,” he says. “Most of these soldiers will only ever see one war firsthand in their lifetime. The ones who survive will grow old and sit in front of their hearths and pass stories of this battle to their children and grandchildren. They’ll romanticize it. Sing praises of how bravely their battalion fought. They won’t speak of the squelch of their fellow friend and soldier’s blood in their boots, or the fear that painted every soldier’s face. Enemy and ally alike.”

2024.05.13 22:33 Leon_Steel Introduction to my fictional Shared Universe the JoeVerse.

Introduction to my fictional Shared Universe the JoeVerse.
I want to share a overview/introduction to my fictional universe that I've been slowly building overtime. I've unfortunately fallen into eternal world building hell where I build far more than I write but at least I thoroughly enjoy it. What I mostly want from this post is to see if the wild amalgamation that is my universe is at least on a surface level "Coherent". I'll answer any questions best I can.
Disclaimer: the pictures shown in the character summaries are not mine and are shown for concept art purposes. These character summaries are taken from across the JoeVerse universe.
Notes: Some information is purposely left vague due to the requirement of story details and I tried to simply the explanations. It may see very unorganized but I created a continuity timeline to help keep track of the verse.
I also created detailed guides for the many Stories, Races/Species, Factions, Locations and Dear God hundreds of Character profiles. Speaking of characters, I really enjoy casual power scaling of fictional characters etc, so when scaling my own universe I exclusively reference the Vs Battle Wiki Tiering system. It is undeniably superb I recommend everyone at least check it out https://vsbattles.fandom.com/wiki/Tiering_System?so=search
Here is what a somewhat completed character profile would look like. https://docs.google.com/document/d/12KilbOVt5RFYg3IckKOYiLPt_UDjrBo5/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=111896033102767588703&rtpof=true&sd=true
Lastly, I agree the name of my verse is terrible, it is a placeholder, I will also be sharing a Fun Facts towards the bottom for shits & gigs.
Introduction:
Welcome to the JoeVerse(Name Pending), a long time literary project that acts as both homage to what I love as well as a deep-dive into my creative mind. The JoeVerse is a fictional "Shared Universe" where a large number of characters, locations and stories created primarily by myself and in collaboration with others take place. The JoeVerse is depicted as existing within a large "Multiverse" consisting of a number of separate & distinct universes, all of which help make up the JoeVerse Multiverse.
The most crucial aspect of the JoeVerse Multiverse is that it also incorporates a large number of genres from all major science fiction and fantasy concepts, such as how aliens, gods, magic, mythology, cosmic beings, parallel universes, interstellar travel and extremely advanced human-developed technology all exist prominently throughout the Multiverse.
The JoeVerse primarily was created to express my love for "Action" and the many forms it comes in. For example the many pieces of media entertainment I consumed as a child. e.g Cartoons, Comics, Anime, Books, Video Games, Martial arts, Music, Movies, etc) all strongly and directly influenced the creation of the JoeVerse. The JoeVerse's many stories primarily focus on the aspects I like about these pieces of entertainment such as Action, Characters, Power-Scaling, Continuity, Worldbuilding and Paying Homage to these oh so cherished pieces of media.
)))JoeVerse Prime: At the heart of this multiverse lies the mainstream continuity, which is known canonically as "JoeVerse Prime". JoeVerse Prime is based on a fictitious take on the real-world. For example, Earth found within the JoeVerse Prime has mostly all the features of the real one: same countries, same public personalities (politicians, movie stars, etc.), same historical events (such as World War II, the Cold War), and so on; however, it also contains many other fictional elements, such as new geographical locations, political organizations and a number of new & different historical events.
Corners & Sub-Corners:(Re-read if needed) The JoeVerse Prime is divided into four separate major settings of distinct & “Broad '' genres known as "Corners". The four respective Corners are Earth, Intergalactic, the Naatherlands and the Interdimensional. All Corners house minor settings of typically more “Focused” genres & stories known as "Sub-corners". The Corners and their respective Sub-corners are liable to "Crossover" and even connect with one another.
Four Corners explained:
)Earth: Starting with "Earth", home to an abundance of "Action & Adventure" series featuring primarily humanity through various times in history (I.e stories can take place anywhere from Ancient times all the way to the Modern era and beyond). The majority of stories told on Earth feature subjects & characters such as war, criminals, detectives, espionage, politics, assassins, soldiers, super soldiers, spies, mutants, zombies, magic, warriors, martial artists and then some.
There are also Earth's five sub-corners, starting with the "Underworld", home to the stories of "Urban Fantasy" about the supernatural & often cruel world of Vampires, Gargoyles, Lycans and much more all vying for survival and power while living just under the periphery of human civilization. The Underworld explores the supernatural civilization that has co-existed alongside humanity since ancient times.
Then the second Sub-corner, the "Holy War", a myriad of stories using lore based on the many “Mythologies & Folklore” of various human cultures, these stories follow the secret, ancient, bloody war of the Celestial Church. The Celestial Church is a 2000 year old clandestine organization of holy; warriors, soldiers, mages, knights, nuns, monks and more gathered from the many religions & cultures from around the globe to be the stalwart shield & sharpened blade against the supernatural, the unending swathes of powerful demons attempting to invade Earth and the unspeakable evil entities from alternate dimensions all of which has threatened humanity since it's conception.
Then the "West Coast Tales", a dramatic & grounded anthology series based in and around the West Coast of America. In every story we follow new characters in vastly different situations in life as they deal with family, drama, violence, romance, finances, sickness, coming of age, natural disasters, etc.
Then, the "Virtual World", a video game-like dimension that is home to various "LitRPG" focused stories. The Virtual World is directly connected to Earth via the highly popular, full-body capsule operated VRMMO known as the T.B.G system(Name pending). The Virtual world naturally houses the concept of "Gaming" thus it converts anything that enters it into data that follows its unique laws of reality and thus it has NPCs, Boss fights, Exp, Quest, Stats, H.U.Ds, Builds, Classes, etc.
Finally, the "Kaijin conflict" is the "Kaiju genre" focused storyline about the international conflict between the South Korean based Iskandar Industries with a human mutant sub-species known as the Kaijin. The Kaijin have superhuman abilities and are liable to become animalistic and go on a rampage; they also have the ability to transform into giant destructive monsters known as Kaijus.
)Naatherlands: The next Corner, the "Naatherlands", a large somber dimension that is home to the land of the "Supernatural & the Macabre". With it having stories of Vampires, Lycans, Gremlins, Gargoyles, Witches & Warlocks, horrific wildlife & flora and warring factions led by barbaric warlords. There is also varying levels of industrialized magic-based technology all in the backdrop of a Victorian era-esque(Gaslamp) setting.
And it's singular sub-corner the "Court of Blood", a "Political" focused series that shows the inner workings of the cunning, devious and often blood thirsty motives and actions of the royal members and leading factions of the upper echelon of the Naatherlands as they go about the cruel game of politics.
)Intergalactic: Third Corner, the "Intergalactic" is the setting encompassing the vast Cosmos of which Earth is a part of. The Intergalactic is home to various "Sci-fi" stories full of aliens, robots, artificial intelligence, spacecrafts, advanced and futuristic weapons & technology, interstellar bounty hunters, psychic power wielding warriors as well as galaxy spanning empires and Interstellar warfare.
Its first Sub-corner, "The War of Order & Chaos" is a "Mecha" inspired set of stories about the eternal struggle across the known universe between the immensely powerful chosen warriors of Order & Chaos known as the "Exuu'd". The Exuu’d are random individuals chosen from around the cosmos, if Chaos they are made to spread destruction, misery & death, if Order they are made to spread salvation, love & positivity. For the side of Chaos an Exuu’d can be criminals, scumbags or even prolific serial killers, for Order the Exuu’ds can be lawmen, samaritans or even average civilians. Regardless of origin the Exuu'd all fight each other for the very balance of the Cosmos. They are also gifted the powerful, sentient mechanized beings known as the Exxoms(Mechas) to assist in their endeavors. Exxoms all have unique designs, personalities and weapons & abilities.
Its second Sub-corner "Aon", a "Sword and Planet" inspired storyline, planet and accompanying solar system. The Aon system is locked outside of time & reality and for unknown reasons travelers from the Intergalactic, Interdimensional and even across time get pulled into the mysterious system by an unknown force. Since being secluded by conventional time both the inhabitants & technology have progressed in a way that there are varying levels of technology. There are crude medieval swords & armor as well as lasers, bolters, throwers and other advanced energy weapons. All inhabitants of Aon regardless of age and race are magically kept in their prime age & appearance. There is also a special & powerful magic known as "Laasa", that only women can harness and use. This has led to the majority of the system being ruled or fought over by factions of women led armies and warriors.
)Interdimensional: Lastly, the "Interdimensional", a catch-all term referring to the nigh-infinite Dimensions that make up the JoeVerse Prime. The Interdimensional is home to many genre blending stories of action, fantasy, science fiction and adventure all in the backdrop of numerous and radically different settings. This corner is populated by a myriad of exotic and powerful races such as the Angels of Heaven, the Demons of Hell, the reality warping Mymths, the cosmic beings known as the Balancers, the biologically altered insectoid empire known as the Urrglom, the humanoid Avian warriors known as the Harrpen, the technologically advanced bloodthirsty androids the Praeoids and much more.
It's first Sub-corner the "Collegium Historia", an “informational” adventure series about an interdimensional group of like minded Scholars, Zoologist, Historians, Explorers and Warriors that work towards the detailed exploration & documentation of the untold number of dimensions and the species & culture they may hold. With the group being led by the renowned, cantankerous explorer and swordsman Scuto Magnus.
Then it's second Sub-corner "The Fantastical Land of ORBIS"(Name pending), a standalone "High-fantasy" world full of adventure, danger, magic and awe. With ORBIS being an immense landmass the size of Earth. ORBIS is also full of creatures & beings such as Orcs, Elves, Dwarves, Dragons and so much more. There are also a slew of fantasy iterations of medieval humans cultures e.g Daiyomondo Empire(Feudal Japan), Gyellhaer(Viking Age Scandanavia), Kingdom of Stanum(Chivalric Knight era Europe) and the Shou Chongtu Empire(Warring States period China).
JoeVerse Fun Facts:
Shared Universe definition: A Shared universe is a fictional universe in which multiple independently created works are set. One or more authors may contribute works to a shared universe. The works within the universe may share characters and other story elements, with or without continuity.(For more detail please check the official Shared Universe Wikipedia. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shared_universe)
The concept of the “Corners & Sub-corners" are inspired by and based on the genre, character & location organization of Marvel and DC Comics.
Non-Canonically, the characters Cole Xaiver, Aiden Steel and Joseph were the first JoeVerse characters ever created in that order. With each of these characters being made to embody an aspect of the aforementioned media entertainment, Cole (Western media & concepts), Aiden (Eastern (Anime) media & concepts), Joseph(a mixture of both).

2024.05.13 15:50 snoopyxp Anime Recommendations - Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries)

Recently I watched the Apothecary and I was very pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Can anybody recommend anything similar? I've watched both Akagami and Akatsuki (I see them popping up as similar anime). Doesn't have to be set in ancient China, nor at an imperial court, but I guess it would be nice if it had some romance.
Thank you.

Children who are noisy and unwilling to sleep will be kidnapped by the big bad wolf outside.
Many schools were built on the sites of ancient execution grounds because energetic young people could make the ghosts unwilling to appear.Beware, the strange building in your school may also have this effect, designed by a mysterious Feng Shui master.

7.6 She Has Great Influence
After returning from my uncle's house, I contacted Eve Liu for a date, but she said she was busy and had no time. I went to ask my roommates in Zhang Limin's dormitory for advice on the matter. Before I could finish talking about Eve Liu and I, Zhang Limin couldn't shut his mouth from laughing and said to me: "Don't get me wrong! As soon as you came into the room and said girlfriend, Classmate A told me that you came here today to ask us for advice on how to solve that girlfriend problem of yours." He added to A: "Holy! I didn't really see it until you said Luyan was sick! How come he's so upset after just a few dates!"
Classmate A said: "There are such people, that girl is a disturbing person! Let me give you an example. We are having a lively discussion here, she comes and says a few words, houses up (pinches, kills) our group of people. Her knowledge is wider than ours, and she sees deeper than we do. What else can we say?"
张利民问:“你咋知道那个女的就是那样儿的人?”
乙同学说:“看看咱们东北大学天才班那帮疯子,谁能整得了!中国医科大学天才班的学生肯定比咱东大的疯多了!”
Zhang Limin asked, "How do you know that woman is that kind of person?"
Classmate B said, "Look at those crazy people in the genius class at our Northeastern University, who can handle them! The students in the genius class at China Medical University are much crazier than our Northeastern!"
Zhang Limin said: "I quite like them! What's wrong with finding an educated girlfriend who earns more money! Why is Luyan so upset?"
Classmate A said: "Being squeezed (pinched, housed)! Speeches are inferior to her, even dare not to speak! She despises you! The girl's advantages are obvious, Luyan can not deny; shortcomings are prominent, Luyan can not countenance. Luyan can't decide whether to get along or not, so he came to ask us. This won't work! Long pain is worse than short pain, break up immediately!"
Zhang Limin said to him: "Hey! Ai! Luyan didn't let you make the decision! They've only just met. After a long time, how do you know that the girl will not like Luyan, give way to him!"
They think, "Expostulation (1)" is Eve Liu's personal strong trait, lifelong, can not learn the word "Concession". The people in the genius class of the China Medical University are the first-class geniuses in whole China, and I, Luyan, have mediocre qualifications. If I marry her, I can only live in fear for the rest of my life. This marriage is not a good match, suggest that I find a like me.
我打电话给刘健君,说话支支吾吾的,她说:“我也觉得咱俩不合适。” 就这样,我和她分手了。
一周后,我已经把她忘了,逐渐从不舒服的身心状态恢复了健康。
I called Eve Liu, stammered, she said: "I also think we are not suitable." Thus, she I broke up with me.
A week later, I gradually recovered from the uncomfortable physical and mental state of health, and I had already forgotten about her.
https://preview.redd.it/vwaskyn7c40d1.jpg?width=1348&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=52518c36547c25dd61b34038b142801760a841df
Note 7.6-1, Expostulation is the act of earnestly protesting or remonstrating, but Buddha believes that Expostulation is the cause of all riots, so abstaining from Expostulation is the first precept of the Buddhist community. The Jade Girl (Eve, Guanyin Bodhisattva), at this age, is especially heavy in Expostulation. Figure 7.6-1 is a drawing of the traits of the Jade Girl (Eve) from ancient Mexico, about 20-39 years old. Her eyes are on top of her head and her body is very wide, indicating that she is arrogant and looks down on others. This is the reason why Shakyamuni (i.e., Adam, the Golden Boy, the Judge of the Doomsday) complimented Guanyin Bodhisattva (i.e., Eve, the mother of all living beings) when he coronated her as "The Upmost Number 1 of No Expostulation Dwell” (cf. Section 17.2.9, Forbidden Fruit, of the Diamond Sutra), which was meant to remind her to abstain from expostulation.
(2)
One day at noon, passing by the door of Teacher Huang's dormitory, he called me over. I smiled and entered their room. Teacher Huang asked me to come closer; I listened solemnly. He said: "Eve Liu's mom told me to tell you that she says you shrink back when you see people, blush when you talk, and don't know anything! She doesn't want to get along with you anymore. Didn't I tell you to pay attention to your demeanor in dealing with her!"
我立刻生气地大叫:“她早就告诉我了!” 转身离开了。
黄老师对他室友叨咕:“怎么搞的?这事不用告诉两遍。走,咱俩过去看看!” 他们俩跟到了我的房间。
I immediately yelled in anger: "She told me that already!" Turning away.
Teacher Huang chattered to his roommate: "What the hell? You don't have to tell this twice. Come on, let's both go over and look!" The two of them followed me to my room.
Teacher Huang said, "Luyan hurt his pride!" His roommate muttered, "He can still hurt his self-esteem!"
Teacher Huang yelled at his roommate: "Shut up! You look at everyone like yourself!" To me, he said: "You're not to blame for this, you're fine and normal, it's that girl Eve Liu who's too powerful!"
我流着眼泪说:“她厉害!那不还是我不行么!”
他的室友说:“哎呀!卢岩真的哭了,真动情了!怎么反应这么强烈?”
I said with tears in my eyes: "She's awesome! Then it's still me who's not good!"
His roommate said: "Oops! Luyan really cried and got emotional! Why did you react so strongly?"
Teacher Huang said to him: "It's not obvious!" To me, he said: "It's not that you are inferior! Eve Liu is different. This girl squeezes dislike, that's what makes it hard! Look at me, I'm in my forties, but when no one's around, I've cried five or six times because of her. Look, I just introduced her to boyfriends, how did she treat me? You saw it the day you met her (cf. section 7.3 Blind Date). Once, when no one else was around, she just gritted her teeth like this (with his face turned sideways) and made me listen, 'Worthless thing, if you can't do this, what else can you do!' Eh! I introduced her to a boyfriend as a favor to her; I did it for her father's sake."
I think this is strange, how to react so strongly, said: "I'm fine, what she said is the truth, just feel aggrieved."
His roommate said: "It didn't hurt his pride; Eve Liu is right!"
Teacher Wong yelled at him: "How can saying the wrong thing hurt self-esteem!" He also said to me: "That girl looks at people's shortcomings, that's only accurate!"
