2024.05.15 02:46 klef25 Couldn't find a bootable operating system!!!!

I just performed the most recent Windows Update and it booted to a "Surface UEFI" information screen. If I "exit" and "Restart now" from there, I see the Windows logo flash a few times and then it gives me a "Boot Error" box with the message "Couldn't find a bootable operating system. Check the Boot configuration to try to fix this." I've googled that message and tried the troubleshooting steps, but that hasn't helped. The next option is to use a USB recovery drive. Has anyone else come across this? It was working just fine before the update.
Edit: I went to download the recovery USB and then another blue box popped up in front of the "Boot Error" box that said something to the effect of it was going to turn off due to inactivity. I Ignored it since I didn't care if it turned off. When I went back to it, it came on like normal as if it was just in sleep mode. I'm not sure what happened. Part of the troubleshooting was to hold the power key to force a restart, which didn't fix the problem. So, for right now, it seems fine. I'll update if it gives any more problems.

The World, the Flesh, and the Devil Pt1, Ch2.0: God Sends Meat
Earth - Cetus
After depositing a second Wukong in one of Lua’s many craters, the mercurial monkey piloted their RailJack vessel, an ancient space-worthy war relic from a conflagration fought in the firmament and long thought forgotten, to drop a third Wukong at the Drifter’s Camp before heading to one of the last surviving human settlements; Cetus, home to the Ostron people.
The humid air was hot and heavy with the pungent odor of sea salt, sweat, and blood as the rising tide sluiced at the rocky shore of Cetus’ beach that ran closest to its most identifiable landmark: a half-mile tall tower to the heavens. Rumor was it ran equally deep into the bedrock, lower chambers full of eldritch monsters and other equally implausible horrors told to Ostron children to keep them well-behaved.
The Tower of the Unum, or simply The Wall by ignorant outsiders, was home to a presence that the Ostrons kept in nigh-holy reverence, hidden away behind and within her walls at the pin-center of the universe, rationing out her prophetic secrets. The final assault on Earth by Narmer hadn’t been able to fully cow the Unum into submission, even after they had crashed one of their own mammoth Murex galleons from orbit into her, she continued to stand unbowed. Damaged certainly, even suppressed to a degree, but unbowed all the same.
Wukong released the dual control grips, stepping from the pilot’s sconce after the stabilizer harness had retracted with a quiet pneumatic hum, which handed over control of the helm to Cephalon Cy for their final approach to Cetus. This cephalon system was a digital personage who served during the Old War and was forgotten as a ghost ship in the vestiges of dark, cold space. The Orbiter’s own cephalon, Ordis, has uncovered the fragmented mystery and Cy was eventually reassembled and recovered to manage the systems of the Railjack where his vaunted experience and esoteric knowledge was invaluable.
“Wukong disembarking. Pressurization equalized. Dropping out of airlock.” Cy reported in a flattened tone, a sharp departure from Ordis’ light-hearted and conversational inquisitiveness.
The celestial chimp lightly tapped one end of his staff to his forehead in a parody of a military salute and stepped onto the entry/exit umbilicus seal, which unceremoniously spat him out into the sweltering air of Earth’s equatorial coastal region. As his fractured form plummeted towards the unforgiving depth of the ocean, he reached within and simply stopped in mid-air, cloudwalking and now invisible to even the most sophisticated sensors. With this ability, he could just fly to the top of the Tower and let himself in, much like his counterpart was currently doing on Lua, but decorum with the Unum had to be followed. If she didn’t wish to talk with him, he would abruptly find himself outside and possibly banned from further interaction. And his plan absolutely required her assistance at a number of stages so, again, decorum. With that decided, he descended quickly to the beach, reappearing in an almost imperceptible puff of displaced air, taking only the briefest of moments to enjoy a cooling breeze coming off the sea, kissing his faceted flesh as he turned his face upward to gaze at the very height of the Tower.
Aside from being the heart and home of the revered Unum, it was also one of the very last living towers within the Origin system that survived relatively intact from the collapse of the Orokin empire, aside from the recent damage during the Narmer campaign, and outside the Void.
With the mere consideration of that unimaginable place, at that very moment it would have been difficult to determine if the condensation that beaded on his obsidian skin was from the misting ocean spray… or fear.
The space simian shook himself out of his momentary reverie, rolled both of his shoulders to hopefully ease some of the chill that had trickled down his spine, and walked down the short length of the surprisingly inhospitable beach from where he had landed, the settlement of Cetus to his immediate right. Small open-walled tents made up most of the Ostron’s housing and market where, even at this significant distance, Wukong could hear the boisterous merchants calling out their various and myriad wares to be keenly haggled over and hopefully sold. On any other day, he would have walked through the length of the bazaar, captivated by its tantalizing sensorum, if only to be temporarily reminded of how things used to be. As if on cue, his keen peripheral vision caught the blackened remains of a burned down structure, surrounded by small, colorful trinkets of sorrow and remembrance for those lost during Narmer’s brutal occupation.
Never again, he reminded himself.
Best be about it then.
The mercurial monkey stepped out of Sol’s warm embrace and into the cool shadow of the Unum’s tower, turning to fully face the structure. There was a brief glint of light towards the very upper reaches of the Tower, perhaps just sunlight reflecting off one of its many golden and gilded surfaces, but no; Wukong abruptly vanished in an emerald flash, gone from the beach as suddenly as he had come.
Within a minute, the tide had washed his impressions in the sand away as though they had never been.
Apparently she’s willing to speak with me after all, he thought drily. Even though he had partially been expecting it, he still had been surprised at how fast it happened. What the space simian lacked in raw strength, and he wasn’t weak amongst his constituents, he certainly made up for with startling speed. Unsurprisingly though, he was in the upper-most chamber of the Unum’s tower, which still remained halfway exposed to the outside elements from the Murex’s collision.
“I know why you’re here,” the Unum’s presence reverberated throughout the entire structure, including Wukong, making him feel more than hear what she wanted to communicate. Coincidentally, the Lotus spoke those exact words at precisely the same time light-minutes away under the surface of Lua to a different, yet the same, Wukong. If only he believed in coincidences.
“Then you know what I need and how soon I need it.” he stated aloud, although he was absolutely convinced that if he thought it, she would have received it equally well.
Coincidentally, almost as though in response to his words, a white and puffy cloud passed overhead, blocking the sun and briefly dimmed the ambient light in the open room, except for a single golden ray that illuminated a large urn, intricately wrought with precious metal filigree.
Show off, he thought wryly to himself.
An unexpected wave of briney seawater splashed the celestial chimp in the face as he found himself back outside and standing on the small wooden pier reserved for those who wished for an audience with the Unum. The tide had just reached its high point, slapping against the bottom-side of the well-worn planks. He swiveled his head to the left and glanced behind him, confirming that the ceremonial urn had made the instantaneous journey outside with him before cutting his eyes right and up towards the skyline above the beach.
The unmistakable distinctive acoustic signature of a Grineer Skaut craft would have normally alarmed the folks of Cetus, especially considering that standard Grineer forces were just on the other side of the energy barrier supplied by the Unum to keep the Ostrons safe from the horrors that wandered the Plains of Eidolon. Yet their faith in her was absolute, and if it was indeed a threat, it would be subject to the Jade Light and atomized appropriately. So they continued their daily routine without anything other than a cursory glance at the craft’s ingress towards the diminutive pier.
The drab green military vessel entered into hover mode after it drifted to within a dozen paces from the edge of the pier, violent air currents whipping ragged gouts of seawater around it, and the back of the ship mouthed open to lolled out a reinforced steel gangplank.
Kahl-175 marched out from inside the Skaut, stopping before having to step onto the pier itself, only trusting his weight to the sturdy gangplank.
“Tenno.” he said automatically.
Features impassive, the space simian immediately repeated, “Wukong, Kahl-175. Ayatan are stars and the Tenno are-”
“Children of Zariman.” Kahl finished with a self-satisfied nod, a pleased expression creasing his craggy features.
Progress, Wukong thought. So there is potential here.
“Wukong said same thing earlier.” the Grineer tubeman stated, turning to look back up the ramp to where the mercurial monkey had been standing before he had debarked the Skaut.
No one stood there.
Kahl grimaced, furrowing his brow, and turning back to the pier. “Where…”
No one stood there either. Even the urn was gone.
With surprising deftness, Kahl spun around to the mouth of the hovering ship, the air around him alight with small rainbow reflections from the hot sun directly overhead and the scattered water droplets in the air.
Wukong stood there. With the urn.
“What’s that?” Kahl asked after gathering his tubeman-grade wits about him.
“A gift.”
At the far end of the pier where it met the sand, a small group of Ostrons approached carrying a impressively-sized swath of the Unum’s tower, cultivated from the lower levels that met the water line. It was an entirely common and accepted practice of the Cetus population for the Tower’s living flesh to be harvested and used as sustenance after it had been appropriately prepared, with the Unum’s permission of course. For them it was just another way that the Unum provided for and protected from the ravages of poor harvests and malnutrition. The portion that was being delivered up to the craft, however, could have fed the entire village for a month straight. And there was a second group of Ostrons behind the first, with an equally sized swath, both of which were delivered into the cargo space of the Skaut without delay, as ordered by the Unum.
The men and women of Cetus were very respectful of them both, nodding repeatedly and receiving instruction without question, especially the dark one with his obsidian skin whom had been received by the Unum earlier in the summer day, and returned to the beach where they were then told to provide a very specific amount of Tower harvest. As the workers were hastily retreating off the gangplank and returning to the pier proper, barely heard over the rising whine of the engines powering up to leave orbit and pneumatic closing of rear hatch, Wukong caught them whispering amongst themselves that the offworlders were blessed with an urn of the Unum’s precious Temple Kuva.

You could be swingin' on a star A House Divided Alternate Elections
The anti-Pact picture \"Casablanca\" helped to create public sympathy for the Grand Alliance and promoted war bonds through various scenes
Even though the American public voted for an interparty coalition of politicians who supported intervention in varying degrees (along with a noticeable minority of voters who opposed any and all intervention) and behind the scenes the federal government has been silently working for years to intervene in Europe and the Far East, the vast majority of the American public did not at all expect the outright declaration of war on Japan the 76th Congress managed to produce. As a result, there was opposition from the start to the war effort through strikes despite the partial success of President Hayes in preventing the miners' strike. Although the brutality and scale of the attack on San Diego succeeded in temporarily uniting the American people (indeed, along with most of the American continents joining to the Grand Alliance), the divisive elections of 1940 along with the stubborn opposition of the SWP to President Hughes in the constitutional crisis of 1941 led to fear among most Americans of defeat on the battlefield and civil war at home. Together with the speed of President Hughes' handling of the crisis (by ordering the return of all forces from North Africa to deal with the escalating domestic insurgency), Hollywood entered the picture.
The basis for the creation of the cinema was a variety of new technologies and inventions mainly through the ability to photograph and record images and sound. In the United States, in 1893, the inventor Thomas Edison together with his assistant William Kennedy Dixon introduced the kinetoscope; A device through which films could be watched by inserting a coin and the viewing was done using a "peek box" - a rectangular box that contained the projection mechanism, when the viewer saw the film through a glass lens at the top of the device. Edison's shady conduct in his business and legal issues will also be the motive for the migration of those involved in the fields of cinema from the New York state to the Los Angeles area, and for the establishment of Hollywood (along with a favorable weather for shooting outdoor scenes most of the year).
During humble beginnings of the Post-Grant's New America when the film industry was still in its infancy, many immigrants, mainly Jews, found employment field as a result of not being accepted in other more established industries in the competition for the job market and therefore even though the pioneers of American cinema such as D.W. Griffith were American directors who for the most part represented a sentimental southern and traditional Grantist world view there were already those who opposed Integralist concepts like Charlie Chaplin. After the Great War, various filmmakers and actors such as Marlene Dietrich immigrated from Europe. They joined a long line of film actors born in the United States, most of whom flocked to Southern California from Western New York after the first talking motion pictures were shown there as the new industry slowly but gradually took on an image of glamor and investments from various tycoons.
A typical motion projector during the \"classic Hollywood\" era
In the period called the "classic era of Hollywood" or the "golden age" from approximately right before the start of the 1930s all the way to the start of America's involvement in World War II, different high-budget studios already competed in films with complex and long plots and produced westerns, "film noir" films, musicals, animated cartoons and biographical films. At that time, thousands of people were employed by the film studios - actors, producers, directors, writers, stuntmen, and technicians. The movie studios owned hundreds of movie theaters in different cities across the United States where their realized products were shown to the public, who was eager to pay the entrance fee. Thus by the beginning of the fifth decade of the 20th century, Americans had long since become accustomed to the culture of viewing news broadcasts about the state of the world through screenings at the local cinema before the start of the motion picture for which they had come for their leisure.
As soon as the Japanese bombing of California began, it seemed that the industry would collapse or at the very least shut down for a long period of time until it could be rebuilt in New York. However, President Hughes understood its potential and insisted that filming continue despite the situation in the state. He ensured that funds and federal technical equipment poured in (both directly and indirectly) with direct instructions for directors to begin the production of propaganda films to mobilize public opinion in support of the war. Nevertheless, prestigious film premieres were indeed often canceled, even though these films that were shot in California got distributed with haste all across America.
Therefore, Hollywood underwent another transformation and a new variety of films were created which hinted (and some of them did not hint at all but were in fact a blatant propaganda product) the importance of the fight against the Pact.
The history of collaboration between the US military and Hollywood was long-standing at this point. The first collaboration between the Army and Hollywood took place in 1923 in the Mitchel era (that was also a certain indirect tribute to the former president who was fond of the world of aeronautics) with the production of the film "Wings" that aimed to encourage recruitment to the Army Air Corp. The film, which was shot on a huge budget for its time dealt with a triangle involving two pilots and the girl they are in love with - a combination of the romantic and heroic genres without any criticism of the military and its actions. However, it paled in comparison to World War II and the sense of "what is at stake" by both the federal government and Hollywood. This period brought the cooperation to a new level. The military recruited Hollywood stars such as James Stewart Clark Gable and Henry Fonda, and used them in propaganda films for the US military and the war effort. For this purpose, some of the most important Hollywood directors were also recruited - John Ford, Howard Hawks and Frank Capra. Capra particularly excelled: Between the years 1942 to 1946 he directed a series of eight propaganda masterstrokes called "Why We Fight" in which each episode presented in length the audience a different enemy combatant nation of America while actors went on tours of different fronts around the world to boost morale and present their film works to the soldiers.
With the end of the war, Hollywood tried to adapt to a brave new world, but the cessation of the flow of funds and equipment was something it was not ready for. Combined with the beginning of the television era, Hollywood had to reduce the number of its film production, although quite soon in the strong post war economy, tycoons even allowed directors to increase their quality of film production. As a result of the changes, the studios began to focus mainly on the production of entertainment content that the television medium could not provide to viewers – an even bigger and more spectacular show for the eyes. Although television broke the hegemony that the American film industry had in the American entertainment industry, as a result of the direct competition there were many changes that benefited the film industry. That was due to public opinion beginning to see cinema as a more serious artistic medium worthy of respect compared to home Television.

Help me figure out my math for material cost
I’m looking into replacing my deck (top only, structure and joists are still okay) after I bought my house. Been trying to do the math and figure out what I should budget for materials - would love some advice if I’m in the right ballpark, since the final price seems unexpectedly high. If it helps anything, I’m in Denver CO.
Deck size: 16ft x 9 ft main deck, 14ft x 3.4ft stair surface
That gets me to a total area of 191.833sqft (5760 sqin), which should amount to 480 linear feet when going for 16ft 2x6 deck boards.
Local supplier quoted me $5.36/lft for Red Balau, $3.45 for Cedar & $4.65 for Redwood B Grade. This would come out to between $1660 - $2570 just for materials, which feels like a lot? What’s a price per sqft that I should expect?

2024.05.15 01:44 tempmailgenerator Resolving Laravel 500 Errors After Email Dispatch

Exploring Laravel's Email-Related Routing Challenges

In the dynamic world of web development, Laravel stands out as a PHP framework known for its elegance and robustness, facilitating not just web application development but also complex functionalities like email handling. However, developers occasionally encounter a perplexing issue where a 500 server error is thrown after an email is successfully sent. This problem not only interrupts the flow of user interactions but also poses a significant challenge in diagnosing and resolving the underlying cause. Understanding the context and complexities of this issue is essential for developers aiming to create seamless and resilient applications.
The error typically manifests itself during the redirection process post-email dispatch. This behavior suggests a potential issue not with the email sending functionality itself, but rather with how the application handles the transition thereafter. Investigating this requires a deep dive into Laravel's routing, session management, and error handling mechanisms. A thorough examination of these components not only aids in pinpointing the root cause but also in implementing a robust solution. This introduction sets the stage for a detailed exploration of diagnosing and resolving the occasional 500 error after email dispatch in Laravel applications.
Command / Function Description
Mail::send() Sends an email using Laravel's built-in Mail class.
redirect()->route() Redirects the user to a specific route within the application.
back() Redirects the user back to the previous location.
with() Passes data to the view or redirect response.

Unraveling the Mystery Behind Laravel's 500 Errors After Email Dispatch

When diving into the intricacies of Laravel's 500 errors following email dispatches, it becomes clear that the framework's sophisticated architecture is both a boon and a bane. On one hand, Laravel provides a streamlined approach to handling emails through its Mail class, leveraging drivers such as SMTP, Mailgun, and others for efficient email delivery. On the other hand, the very flexibility and abstraction that make Laravel appealing can also obscure the root causes of errors when they arise. A common scenario involves the misconfiguration of mail settings or the environment (.env) file, leading to failures in email delivery that aren't immediately apparent due to Laravel's background job processing.
Moreover, the error handling mechanism of Laravel, while robust, requires careful configuration to ensure that exceptions are logged and handled appropriately. In cases where a 500 error occurs after email dispatch, developers must look beyond the surface level of email sending to the post-send routing and session management. It's crucial to implement custom exception handling or utilize Laravel's built-in logging features to capture and analyze the error details. By systematically troubleshooting—from verifying mail configuration and environmental variables to scrutinizing the redirect logic and session state—developers can uncover the nuances of the error. This methodical approach not only resolves the immediate issue but also enhances the application's resilience against similar problems in the future.

Email Dispatch and Redirection in Laravel

Programming Language: PHP with Laravel Framework
to($user->email, $user->name)->subject('Welcome!'); }); if (Mail::failures()) { return redirect()->back()->withErrors(['msg' => 'Email sending failed']); } else { return redirect()->route('home')->with('success', 'Email sent successfully!'); }

Insights into Laravel's Email Dispatch Issues and 500 Errors

The phenomenon of encountering a 500 error in Laravel after sending an email is a multifaceted issue that demands a comprehensive understanding of both Laravel's email system and its error handling mechanisms. At its core, Laravel's robust mail functionality is designed to simplify the process of sending emails through various drivers and services. However, the intricacies involved in configuring these services correctly can often be a source of problems. Misconfigurations in mail drivers, incorrect SMTP server settings, or issues with third-party mail services can lead to failed email attempts that, in turn, trigger a 500 error. This is compounded by Laravel's environment configuration system, where even a minor oversight in the .env file can disrupt the email sending process.
Beyond configuration issues, another critical aspect to consider is Laravel's handling of exceptions and errors. A 500 error, typically indicative of a server-side issue, can mask underlying problems in the application's logic or configuration. Laravel developers must employ a diligent debugging approach, utilizing logs and Laravel's built-in debugging tools to trace and resolve the error's root cause. Furthermore, understanding the flow of requests and responses in Laravel's architecture is crucial, as redirect operations post-email dispatch can inadvertently lead to session state conflicts or route misconfigurations, further complicating the troubleshooting process.

2024.05.15 01:44 notrabalho I love the Palmer Method, but I have some concerns

I've been practicing with the Palmer Method handbook for a couple of weeks now: I can already lay down some legible scribbles, and it feels just so good how free and flowing writing that way goes. Even so early on my handwriting with the Palmer Method already looks better than it does with my typical 'fingerwriting' - no joke. Though it's still very inconsistent, but I just need more practice.
Now, what concerns me:
So I'd appreciate if you guys could give me your opinions on this stuff.
Thanks!

2024.05.15 01:36 tarvolon Fake Italy, Real Scheming: An ARC Review of Navola by Paolo Bacigalupi

This review is based on an eARC (Advance Reading Copy) provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review and can also be found on my blog. Navola will be released on July 9, 2024.
Paolo Bacigalupi is an author that hit big while I was in a reading hiatus. I missed the boat, but I’ve been meaning to circle back around and try his stuff. And while I don’t read quite as many big, fat fantasies as I used to, I still have a soft spot for them. So when I saw he was releasing an intricate historical fantasy with plenty of backstabbing and politics, I thought Navola was a great opportunity to give his work a try.
Navola takes place in a heavily Italian-inspired fantasy world and follows the son of a powerful banking family as he struggles to live up to the cunning intelligence of his father and grandfather. It’s a slow build, following the lead from childhood into adolescence and early adulthood, and though the dragon eye on the cover is more than just window dressing, the story leans much more to the historical fantasy than to the magical. This is without a doubt a book for fans of politics and scheming.
As perhaps should be unsurprising, Navola starts laying the groundwork for the political plots very quickly, but it takes a long time for the lead or the reader to really grasp the shape of things. The lead is long on empathy and short on ambition, and though he tries to be a dutiful son, none of the political maneuvering really comes naturally. And so we see his adolescence—the lessons, the friendships, the horniness, the doubts about his chosen path, all of it. And while it may not be clear exactly where the story is going during that time, it’s clear enough that it is indeed going somewhere, and the quality of the prose is high enough that reading never feels like a chore, even when the plot is opaque.
And when the big seeds of plotting come due, they do so in a rush of blood and thunder that makes the book almost impossible to put down. There are times where the reader may see twists coming before the naive narrator does, but not so early that it spoils the tension or prevents those big moments from being utterly engrossing.
For readers in search of sympathetic characters, there aren’t many. The lead’s empathy makes him one of the likeliest, but his adolescence shows off as much or more self-centeredness as you’d expect from a teenager, and the world is desperate to shape him into a manipulator who trusts no one and loves no one outside his own family. Make no mistake, this is a book written for those seeking a tale that’s short on goodness and trust and long on manipulation and violence. It gets dark—there’s backstabbing, torture, sexual violence—but it’s certainly entertaining always waiting to see which twist is happening next.
Navola also isn’t an end to the story. In many ways, this is a book focused on shaping the main character to be what he needs to be for the rest of the series. A lot happens from a plot perspective, but it’s not a book that ends on a hero having accomplished his primary goal. There are significant character and plot arcs that more than justify Navola being its own book and not a mere piece of another book, but it’s absolutely designed as a series-starter.
So should you read this book? Well, it depends on what you’re after. Thematically, it has plenty to say on how the hunger for power and wealth creates a world of violence and mistrust, but those aren’t exactly observations you can’t find explored just as well elsewhere. Really, this depends on what kind of fantasy you enjoy. If you’re a fan of dark, gritty political fantasy and don’t mind buckling up for a slow-building series of doorstoppers, step right up. That’s what Bacigalupi is going for, and his writing quality is on full display. But if that isn’t your style, this probably isn’t a book that’s going to change your mind. It does an excellent job of being what it wants to be, but it’s not out to transform a subgenre. Perhaps there’s a shift with the sequels–it certainly wouldn’t be the first series that started playing firmly within the existing expectations and branched out as the series progressed–but Navola as a novel is one for the fans of darkness and intrigue.
Recommended if you like: historical fantasy, schemes and politics, books with no clear heroes.
Can I use it for Bingo? It’s hard mode for Disability, and it’s also very obviously meant to be First in a Series, plus it’s Published in 2024, contains Dreams, Reference Materials, and a segment Under the Surface.
Overall rating: 17 of Tar Vol’s 20. Five stars on Goodreads.

How do you keep the humidity up?
I finally got my Pacman frog from a friend of a friend who was rehoming due to a move, and I've had Jeffrey for about 2 weeks now! I did tons of research on this and other forums, and had my bioactive tank set up for months before I finally got him. My biggest issue right now is keeping the humidity up. The 10 gallon tank is heated with a dual dome that has UVB and a heat bulb, and there is a heating pad stuck to the side of the tank (with a thermometer control of course). The substrate is Reptisoil with a bit of Coco coir mixed in for fluffiness.
One half of the screened lid is covered with tin foil to try to keep the humidity in, but I can only get it to hold at a max of 65% (for about five minutes) before it drops down to the 50s-40s range. The heat lamp is positioned over the water bowl, and I pour filtered dechlorinated water directly on the substrate to the point where I can squeeze a few drops out of it. My only other idea is to cover the surface of the substrate with sphagnum but I'm afraid of him eating it.
Jeffrey (I think is male but I don't really know how old he is) is still eating every other day and acting normally. This is my first "exotic" pet outside of dogs/cats/fish, and I live in the desert so humidity is a new struggle here 🥲 any help is appreciated! Pic of setup and the man himself for tax.

2024.05.15 01:31 spqceglohs Need to rant for a bit. I realized my boyfriend (22M) and I (23F) have very different emotional needs and idk what to do.

We have been dating for almost 3 months but have been best friends for almost 2 years before we started dating. We thought we knew each other well as friends, we caught feelings, fell in love and decided to give it a shot. We are long distance with only 2hr timezone difference, all of our talks are either during call or text. Ever since we started dating tho, there were a lot of uncertainties and insecurities started to pop up to the surface more. I may have anxious attachment and he's avoidant. When things go wrong, I feel the need to ask for validation and reassurance more. For him, he tends to pull back and detach, which triggers my anxiety. The way we deal with emotions are so different and as we progress into the relationship I realize that even more.
I have a hard time expressing how I feel and what I want to him in fear of his reaction, the fear of him pulling back every time I bring something up that is bothering me. We trigger each other just for being ourselves which kinda sucks, it feels like we're trying too hard to keep the relationship alive and it might be taking a toll on our mental health.
We've had this talk already but neither of us wants to let go and we just want to keep on working on it together, although I feel like there are things that might end up make us hold resentment on each other over time. I noticed that his love language is roasting and joking around. Despite me being hypersensitive and don't take roasts well-- I can laugh it off most times because I don't want to ruin the mood, but there are times when I feel extra sensitive that I get moody but when he notice my mood shift, he assumes that he's bothering me and he immediately wants to pull back and leave me there.
Like a very recent phone call we had, he got home from work and called me while I was asleep. Usually we do this every day and he would just sleep on call with me right away but today he had a lot of energy and I wasn't responding very well as I am half awake, half asleep. He immediately assumed that I felt bothered by him and that he shouldn't have called, I felt hella guilty afterwards. He wanted to hang up and sleep off call but that triggered my anxiety out of nowhere. I told him I was just being a bit moody as I just woke up, but he started feeling anxious for my reaction. Idk what to do. I had to adjust my emotional needs just to not make him feel anxious even when I needed that initial reassurance from him.
This hasn't happened in awhile, I usually feel secure in our relationship but the anxiety and guilt came back out of nowhere again. We are both highly sensitive people (but in different ways) and it feels like we couldn't give each other what we need when it comes to emotional stability. Because of this I usually feel paralyzed and like I'm alone in this situation, I'm just afraid this is slowly taking a toll on both of our mental health and I want to do something about it before it gets worse but I'm just not sure where to start.

2024.05.15 01:29 Mrmander20 [Vell Harlan and the Doomsday Dorms] 4 C6.2: A Symphony of Friendship and Frogs

At the world’s top college of magic and technology, every day brings a new discovery -and a new disaster. The advanced experiments of the college students tend to be both ambitious and apocalyptic, with the end of the world only prevented by a mysterious time loop, and a small handful of students who retain their memories.
Surviving the loops was hard enough, but now, in his senior year, Vell Harlan must take charge of them, and deal with the fact that the whole world now knows his secrets. Everyone knows about Vell’s death and resurrection, along with the divine game he is a part of. Now Vell must contend with overly curious scientists and evil billionaires hungry for divine power while the daily doomsday cycle bombards him with terrorists, talking elephants, and the Grim Reaper himself -but if he can endure it all, the Last Goddess’s game promises the ultimate prize: power over life itself.
[Previous Chapter][Patreon][Cover Art]
“Four years on and the headache still sucks,” Vell groaned to himself.
Though most of the loopers had managed to make it to midnight alive, they had nothing to show for it but headaches. They had not succeeded in digging Cane out of the rubble, or investigating his apparent ghost theory in any other way. That was a complication, but not a fatal one. They had some leads to work with, at least, and Vell knew where to get started on the ghost angle. Vell gladly made the call that would get them started.
“Goooooood morning Mr. Harlan,” Harley chimed. “What’s happening?”
“Frog invasions, among other problems,” Vell grumbled.
“Oh, that’s a time loop headache if I ever heard it,” Harley said. She’d run into that affliction more than a few times.
“Yeah, it’s not great,” Vell said. “Listen, do you still have Garrett’s number?”
“Ooh, ghost problems, eh?” Harley said. “I’ll text it to you.”
“Thanks. I kind of got to get right to it, so I’ll have to give you the details later, alright? Love you, Harley.”
“Love you too, bud,” Harley said. “Say hi to Garret for me.”
Vell hung up the first call and braced himself for the second. He liked Garret, but he could also be a lot to deal with -a fact well-demonstrated by the phone call beginning with Garret’s theme music blaring over the phone. Once the bombastic rock and roll stopped, Vell was disappointed to hear a mechanical beep indicate the start of an answering machine message.
“Hi, you’ve reached Garret Geist, Ghost Getter,” the message said, in Garrett’s usual southern california drawl. “I’m currently on a long-term submersible mission to exorcise the ghosts of shipwreck victims who’ve been trapped undersea for centuries.”
“What?”
Vell knew it was a recording, but needed to voice his offense anyway. It was hard to truly be mad knowing Garrett was doing something so incredibly heroic, though.
“I should be back to the surface and ready to help in a few days, so please leave a message and I’ll get to you as soon as I can!”
The automated message clicked again and fell silent. Vell hung up the phone and let out a low groan of despair.
“Okay, we’re not screwed yet,” Vell said. “Just need to wait a bit.”
Vell brushed his teeth and rushed through breakfast, and then, right on cue, heard a knock on his door. He whipped it open to find a bothersome scientist once again at his door.
“Hi, good morning,” Vell said, as he opened the door. “You here to bother me about Quenay?”
“I- uh, I have some very interesting theories.”
“I’m sure you do,” Vell said. “If you can just hold on one second…”
Vell paused and waited. The bothersome student also waited, at least for a few seconds.
“What exactly are we waiting for?”
“This.”
Cane grabbed the student by the collar and yanked them away from the door. Vell invited him in and slammed the door shut behind them to really drive the point home.
“Thank you for that,” Vell said. “Did you need something?”
“Just to talk to you,” Cane said. “I was trying to get people together to hang out tonight. Figured you’d want in, if you’re not too busy.”
“I could probably make it, I just have to…”
Vell froze. He really should’ve come up with these lies in advance.
“You good, Vell?”
“I, uh, sorry, just losing track of things, mentally,” Vell said. “I’ve had a lot of people, uh, ask me for help with things.”
“What kind of things?” Cane said. “You need a hand?”
“Maybe.”
Vell contemplated how to proceed for a moment, and then figured he’d probably built up enough good will with Cane over the past four years he could just dive right in.
“You ever heard about frog ghosts?”
“Yeah,” Cane said, without so much as blinking.
“Oh, cool,” Vell said. “What about them?”
“Well, hold on, are you talking about frog ghosts as in the ghost of frogs, or a ghost related to frogs?”
“Either or, I guess?”
“Okay, because I don’t know anything about any ghostly frogs,” Cane said. “There is supposedly the ghost of a guy obsessed with frogs on campus, though.”
“Interesting. Tell me about the frog guy.”
“I don’t know all the details, it was kind of an urban legend even when my brother came here about a decade back,” Cane said. “All he ever told me was the this frog-obsessed sophomore died while studying, and he haunts the basement of the sophomore dorms, I guess. ‘Some say you can still hear faint croaking in the basement’ and all that horror story shit.”
“Interesting,” Vell said, again. “Let me look into that and we’ll circle back later, alright? I gotta go, see you.”
“Vell-”
“Sorry, kind of in a hurry, bud,” Vell said, as he left and shut the door behind.
“This is your dorm, dude,” Cane said.
***
“You were not exaggerating about this headache,” Alex said.
“We warned you,” Kim said. “Man, it’s almost better to die.”
“How do you have a headache, you’re made of metal!”
“It’s complicated,” Kim said. Her synthetic body did not spare her from the time loop headache, no matter how she rebuilt herself.
“Good morning everyone,” Helena said, as she whacked the door open with a crutch. “What did I miss?”
“Quiet down a little, please” Hawke said.
“Why?”
“Do you not have a headache too?”
“No, I died pretty early,” Helena said. “Got a frog on me.”
“You died from a frog touching you? What condition do you have that causes that?”
“Well it was a poison dart frog, so I guess ‘being alive’,” Helena said. Samson pursed his lips and said nothing. “What did you all get up to while I was busy being dead?”
“Vell found out the frogs were summoned by a weird frog-obsessed ghost,” Hawke said. “He apparently knows a guy who might be able to help.”
The loopers then proceeded to relax and chat about frogs, ghosts, and other miscellaneous topics for about seven minutes, which made it a lot less dramatic when Vell barged in and announced Garret would be unable to help.
“Oh come on,” Kim snapped. “What’s the point of knowing a ghost hunter if he never helps hunt ghosts?”
“He’s on some undersea mission to rescue lost souls,” Vell said. “Which makes it really hard to be mad at him.”
“And yet I manage,” Kim said. She didn’t begrudge Garret personally, but she had been hoping for their first easy win of the year. All the apocalypses thus far had been a major pain in the ass.
“Aren’t you people supposed to be able to handle things like this?”
“Yes, Alex, and we will,” Vell said. “Just would’ve been nice to have a professional on the job.”
“I’ll get the ghostbusting stuff ready,” Hawke sighed. He would’ve loved a chance to outsource their daily nonsense.
“Keep it on standby for now,” Vell said. “Ghosts have unfinished business or regrets. If we can help our ghost deal with whatever frog-related business he’s got going on, maybe we can fix this without having to bust anyone.”
“That’s your plan?” Alex said. “Be nice to the ghost that crushed a building and hope it goes away?”
“Yes,” Vell said, with a completely straight face. “And busting is plan B.”
“Bustin’ makes me feel good,” Hawke sang, as he grabbed all their various ghostbusting gear.
“True professionals at work,” Alex scoffed. Everyone else rolled their eyes and got back to work.
“Vell is an old pro at being nice to people,” Kim said. “Just ask Helena’s sister.”
“Don’t pat yourself on the back, Joan’s incredibly susceptible to manipulation,” Helena said. It was disturbing she’d say that, and even more disturbing she knew that. “That said, anyone dumb enough to get stuck as a ghost for decades will probably buy into your routine just as easily.”
“Thanks for your input,” Vell said. “I’m just going to go ahead and get started.”
He said that both because it was important and because it was an excuse to get away from Alex and Helena faster.
“Need any backup?” Samson asked, for similar reasons.
“I’ll check it out solo first,” Vell said. Historically speaking, he was the best people-pleaser, a dubious honor at best, but one that came in handy when dealing with a frog-summoning ghost. “I’ll let you know if I need backup.”
“Or busting,” Hawke said.
“Or busting,” Vell agreed. “I have to find out where the ghost is, for starters. I’ll be in touch soon.”
***
Finding the lair of the ghost was the first hurdle. As it turned out, the sophomore dorms had a lot of basements. Every building on campus had a lot of basements, so Vell was not all that surprised. At least these basements didn’t have booby traps or old experiment equipment in them. They mostly just had a lot of junk. Vell kicked aside some old food wrappers and scanned the room.
“Why do people treat these empty rooms like dumping grounds?”
“People are usually different when they think no one is watching.”
Vell whipped around and saw a transparent head poking through one of the nearby walls. A ghost if Vell had ever seen one.
“Oh, hi,” Vell said. “Uh, weird question, how do you feel about frogs?”
“I’m ambivalent at best,” the ghost said. “Are you looking for the frog guy? Because he haunts two rooms over.”
The ghost pointed to the right, down the hall, and Vell looked that way.
“Thanks,” Vell said. He took a few steps towards the door before spinning around to face the other ghost again. “Uh, do you need any help like, moving on? Finishing unfinished business?”
“Nah, we get wifi down here, so I don’t mind just chilling,” the ghost said. “Thanks for offering though.”
The ghost drew back into the wall and vanished from sight. While Vell was painfully curious as to how a ghost accessed wifi, he decided it was time to move on. The frog ghost was apparently close by, after all.
Vell followed the wifi ghost’s directions and hopped two doors down, barging into a subterranean room that was uncomfortably moist and smelled of mud and rainwater. Condensation dripped from the ceiling and onto Vell’s back, sending an unpleasant shiver down his spine. Unlike other rooms, this one was completely free of any garbage, but Vell took no comfort in that.
“Hello? Anybody home?”
A chill ran down Vell’s spine that definitely was not another drop of water. He waited two seconds, took a deep breath, and turned around.
“Hello.”
Vell was just inches away from another transparent face. This one had a slight green tint, with wide set eyes and a broad, flat mouth. Vell wondered if the similarities to a frog had been there during this person’s life, or if they just liked frogs so much their ghost had slowly shifted to reflect their passion.
“Hey! Hi, uh, nice to meet you,” Vell mumbled. “I’m Vell.”
“I’m Raine.”
“Neat, nice name,” Vell said. If Raine noticed the awkward hesitation in the compliment, he didn’t show it. “So, uh, I was wondering, well, I heard you were the guy to ask about frogs.”
The already wide eyes of the ghost got even wider, and visible excitement trembled through their spectral form. Vell began to think he may have made a mistake.
***
“So even though it’s the biggest frog in the America’s, the helmeted water toad is still only half the size of the Goliath frog,” Raine said. “Which must be wild for the helmeted water toad. Could you imagine crossing an ocean and finding out the people who live there are literally twice your size?”
“Must be pretty mindblowing, yeah,” Vell said.
“And that’s not even going into the real extremes,” Raine said. “Do you remember our pal P. Amauensis?”
“How could I forget,” Vell said, about something he had definitely forgotten.
“Not just the world’s smallest frog, but maybe the world’s smallest vertebrate,” Raine said. “Only seven point seven millimeters long, a literal fraction of the Goliath frog! Could you imagine meeting someone who’s only as big as your toe?”
“I actually did, once,” Vell said. “Shrink ray.”
“Oh. Was...was it weird?”
“A little,” Vell said.
“Wow. You almost know what it’s like to be a Goliath frog meeting a P. Amauensis,” Raine said. “I’m so jealous.”
“Yeah, I’ve done a lot of interesting stuff,” Vell said. “What about you, what’d you get up to when you weren’t studying frogs?”
Raine tilted his spectral head and stared blankly at Vell.
“You did do things other than study frogs, right?”
“Not if I could help it,” Raine said.
“Okay, uh...what did you like to eat?”
“Oh, I just ate food whenever I was hungry,” Raine said. “What I really liked to do was gather samples of different bugs and other frog dietary staples, so I could try to get a sense of their diet for myself.”
“Like, cooked bugs, or just raw, living bugs,” Vell said. He’d eaten a few different varieties of cooked bugs, just for the experience, but couldn’t imagine eating raw insects.
“If I could find them, yeah, live ones,” Raine said. “It got pretty hard after I got banned from the entomology department.”
“That’d do it,” Vell said. “So, did you, uh, go swimming a lot?”
“Oh yeah, all the time,” Raine said. “Until I got banned from the pools too. Trying to swim like a frog doesn’t work very well, and they got sick of having to rescue me, I guess.”
“You could’ve just swam like a person.”
“Why would I do that?”
“To...I don’t know,” Vell said. He was starting to feel like Raine’s entire life and unlife revolved around frogs. “Did you ever do anything, I don’t know, human?”
“Oh, I studied frogs,” Raine said. “Frogs lack the self-awareness to understand frogs. It’s their only flaw, really.”
“I see. So what’s your favorite frog?”
As expected, this set off a long rant, as Raine found it hard to pick a favorite and had to start listing pros and cons of various frog species. It was not exactly scintillating conversation, but it kept Raine talking instead of somehow summoning frogs. Vell kept reminding himself that was the real goal. He was not here to have a pleasant chat, he was here to prevent the frogpocalypse. Anything that kept Raine ranting was good. He was saving the world.
As Raine started ranking every existing frog species by maximum jump distance, Vell kept repeating that to himself. Saving the world, one frog jump strength at a time.

2024.05.15 01:28 alis_adventureland My abuser's new supply needs my help. Idk what to do

It has been 9 years since I escaped my abusive ex-boyfriend. I won't detail any of the events, but the abuse was very physical & sexual. I was regularly covered in bruises. I still have physical scars. Emotional/psychological/verbal abuse was pretty heavy too. Lots of gaslighting, manipulation, isolation from friends/family, degradation, etc...
I've had c-PTSD ever since. I've been in and out of therapy ever since. Every issue in my current marriage (which is very healthy & safe 🙏) is rooted in the trauma my ex gave me. We're still unraveling it, almost a decade later. I still have nightmares and flashbacks. It's like with every trigger that gets resolved, a new one comes up. I've worked so hard to heal.
Yesterday my sister got a text from my abuser's wife. She is getting a divorce and asked if I would write a statement to the court (they've been together since 1 week after I left him). He already has a new girlfriend (got her 1 week after the wife filed for divorce).
They have 4 kids together (all under age 5). He only wants custody of his daughter and wants nothing to do with his 3 boys. She was 19 when they met. She's never worked in her life. She has no education. He emptied all her bank accounts so she is dependent on her family right now.
I want to help her, because I know how truly evil & narcissistic this man is. His dad is a multi-millionaire and has tons of connections. They are both insanely charming & perfect on the surface. They are incredible liars and manipulators.
She is terrified of losing her daughter and being left destitute. It took her years to leave because he threatened to take full custody of her daughter and never let her see her again. She has gotten out but is fighting in court for her kids.
I've started talking to her, and it's bringing up so many feelings. I thought this was all in my past. I thought I could leave it there. I feel so guilty for what she's going through because I wasn't brave enough to go to the police. I left him when I was 21, so I had no reason to face him after I ran away. I can't help but think she wouldn't be in this situation if I had done something about it back then.
I want to help, but I worry that writing out my story for her lawyer will upend my mental health and cause a resurfacing of PTSD. I have 2 kids and a full time job. I can't manage a mental breakdown over this right now. I don't know what to do.

Does Driving Slower Save Gas

Does Driving Slow Save Gas? - The Truth About Fuel Efficiency

Fuel prices have been skyrocketing all year long, and with the average gasoline price over $4.00 nationwide there has never been a better time to talk about fuel economy. One of the most common questions about fuel efficiency and factors that contribute to reducing fuel economy (or how to best save fuel) is related to speed: Does driving slower actually save gas? Or is it just folklore?
Let’s take a closer look before you plan your next road trips, and get the latest gas mileage tips to help save you money!
Learn how GPS trackers can help!: https://konnectgps.com
https://preview.redd.it/mr1cwfp56h0d1.png?width=1000&format=png&auto=webp&s=47a399ca2feebdee0fc2e196f2129299c40790fa

Does Driving Slower Save Fuel - The Facts

If you are driving faster will you burn through more gas? Yes—sometimes—but also no.
The truth is that every automobile has a sweet spot at which the car’s gas mileage peaks; for most vehicles, that’s between 50 and 60 miles per hour, depending on other external conditions such as proper tire inflation, wind resistance, and more. Finding the optimal fuel economy doesn’t mean driving too slow, nor does it mean you should drive fast.
Let’s look at the factors that contribute to driving costs if you’re looking to save money on gas and get optimal fuel efficiency:
  • Drag efficiency: this includes wind resistance (which increases at higher speeds), rolling resistance (the friction of your tires on the road surface, which generally increases with larger and/or grippier tires and decrease with proper inflation), and even the shape of your vehicle (boxy SUVs, for instance, will have more drag than a sleek sportscar) and its weight (a heavily-loaded vehicle will have more drag).
  • Engine efficiency: As a general rule, car engines are most efficient when in top gear but at low revs; you can find that speed by checking the lowest speed at which your vehicle will constantly sit in its highest gear before it shifts down, ideally just below 1500 rpm (and in eco mode, if your car has one). For most vehicles, this is a highway speed of 50-60 miles per hour.
  • Braking and accelerating: Hard braking and accelerating are far less efficient than gently transitioning; as a general rule, safe driving tips at the speed limit result in fuel savings. You shouldn’t be mashing on the gas pedal or brake if you want to stretch your gas station's fuel costs.
  • Time spent idling or with a cold engine: Idling is great for reducing fuel economy, as is driving with a cold engine (so bundling errands rather than making lots of small trips can save money on gas).
Let’s look at what those principles mean in practice, starting with 7 fuel-efficient driving techniques or driving tips that can help you get the best fuel costs according to the Department of Energy's guidelines!

7 Fuel-Efficient Driving Techniques

Check out these driving tips that can help you save money on gas as a result of striving to provide optimal fuel efficiency:
  1. Brake and accelerate gently and smoothly. Mashing on the gas pedal or slamming on the brakes, while all too common in city driving and heavy traffic, are hard on your fuel economy and engine. Instead, work on letting up the gas to more gently decrease speed, for instance.
  2. Understand your transmission’s optimal fuel efficiency. If you drive manual transmissions, take the time to educate yourself (perhaps with the help of the owner's manual) as to the best way to shift efficiently.
  3. Spend time with your owner's manual to ensure you understand which functions might inadvertently be reducing fuel economy. For example, if your vehicle has an eco mode or you drive hybrid vehicles, make sure you understand what affects fuel consumption. Different factors affect different vehicles differently; though driving slower actually saves wind resistance for boxier vehicles, that will affect more streamlined vehicles less, for instance.
  4. Look into cylinder deactivation. Cylinder deactivation, run by on-board computer systems to limit unnecessary drains on your gas tank, works to essentially freeze valves that allow fuel and air into selected cylinders so that your engine uses fewer cylinders when it doesn’t need as much power, effectively making it a smaller engine so that you aren’t unnecessarily reducing fuel economy by using more engine than you need.
  5. Use apps like AAA’s TripTik Travel Planner to drive the most efficient routes. The TripTik Travel Planner can also help you identify gas stations along your route with the best gas price per gallon, as well as gas stations that offer premium fuel. Planning ahead of time in this way can help increase your fuel savings and help you save money on gas.
  6. Drive the speed limit and in the right lane when driving at highway speed. Not only should this limit unnecessary acceleration and braking, but can save your engine unnecessary work. This doesn’t mean driving slow, but rather striving to provide the most efficient use of your engine when traveling at highway speed to limit driving costs; driving too slow is unsafe and can get you a ticket.
  7. Plan your trips ahead of time. In addition to using apps like TripTik Travel Planner, planning ahead of time can limit unnecessary trips. Your engine draws fuel from the gas tank when idling, warming up, running the air conditioner in hot weather, and so forth—not just in the act of driving. So instead of making lots of short trips, running a bunch of errands at once can actually contribute to lower fuel costs and limit unnecessary fuel consumption, thus helping you save money on gas.
Let’s look a little more at how proactive and safe driving can save fuel and help stretch your car's gas tank, limiting your fuel costs.

How Much Fuel Can You Save With Smooth Proactive Driving

The best part about trying to chase ways to save fuel costs is that most of the time it also means driving more safely. It is less about choosing to drive fast or driving slow and more about driving at a safe highway speed and driving the speed limit. The best way to save money on gas and increase your car's gas mileage is by limiting actions that result in unnecessary fuel consumption. The same driving tips that you might see for plug-in hybrid or hybrid vehicles can also help limit your driving costs; striving to provide a smooth, safe experience is generally going to save fuel costs!
But just how much can you save money on gas by embracing proactive driving tips?
Depending on where you look, it may be as much as 40% of your fuel costs. So let’s recap those principles:
  • While it’s generally true that driving slower actually saves wind resistance, it’s not necessarily true that driving slower actually saves gas. Driving too slow can cost you by reducing fuel economy.
  • More important is how you use the gas pedal and brake; even acceleration is important, but even more so, letting off the accelerator rather than braking is one of the top driving tips for those looking to save fuel. Practice coasting to a slower speed as able as long as you can still drive safely doing so.
  • To get the best gas mileage and most efficient fuel consumption, drive at times when you’ll deal with less traffic; that may require more planning ahead of time, but being able to drive at a more consistent highway speed improves fuel efficiency.
Those are the big principles for increased fuel efficiency. Of course, in many cases, looking at a vehicle that gets better gas mileage (such as hybrid vehicles) may be the best way to get optimal fuel efficiency.

How to paint and image or text to a surface
Hi - I’m relatively new to 3d print design. I think I know a lot of the basics but I found this rugged box online and it essentially painted the text/image on the lid. Everything I have tried in Fusion or Bambu studio just loses the design when you merge it in to the surface.
I have tried to google it but can’t seem to find the right words for what it’s called. Does anyone know a good way to do this or have a tutorial for how to achieve this?

2024.05.15 00:55 ReadingFamiliar3564 Given: BK=a, KL=b. Express the area of BCKM using a and b.

When studying for a math test I have on Thursday (11th grade, practice test for questionnaire 035581), I came across this question and I have no idea how to do C (Translated from Hebrew, the question is in the link):
"A circle centered at point M is tangent to the rectangle ABCD at point K. AB and BL are chords in circle M. Point M is on BL.
A. Prove that angle KML is twice as big as angle KBC.
B. Which of the following statements is true and which is false? Explain.
  1. KM is the middle segment in trapezoid DLBC.
  2. The area of ΔLMK is equivalent to the area of ΔMKB
  3. ΔLAB~ΔBCK
C. Given: BK=a, KL=b. Express the area of BCKM using a and b.
D. Express the ratio of the area of ΔBKL to the area of ΔDKL using a and b."
In B, the true ones are 1 and 2, 3 is incorrect- there's a 90 degree angle, but the other angles on ΔBCK are α and 90-α, and on ΔLAB are 2α and 90-2α (because alternate angles are equal between parallel lines and the sum of acute angles in a right triangle 90 degrees).
I expressed the area of ΔMKB as ab/4 using what I proved on B2, SΔBKL=ab/2, and it's twice as big as MKB. I thought about doing it through SΔMKB+SΔBCK, but I couldn't express the area of ΔBCK, I managed to prove that SΔMKB/SΔBCK is MK/BC, but I couldn't find MK/BC. Next, I proved ΔBKC~ΔBLK, the ratio between the edges got me nowhere. I also used the Pythagoras theorem for ΔBKL, LB2=a2+b2, I couldn't do anything with that. Help?

2024.05.15 00:52 Double-Ho-7 A long look into the Knuckles Tracks in SA2

Title says it all, this post is a deep dive into the Sonic Adventure 2 OST, specifically all the songs pertaining to Knuckles. This is for a few reasons that I’ll get into in a moment, but from what I’ve seen Knuckles’ and Rouge’s soundtracks tend to get overlooked or written off by fans (More so Knuckles’) unfairly so in my opinion.
This post will serve, not only to analyze the music itself, but also Knuckles’ characterization, as you’ll see the two are basically intrinsically linked.
Just a quick disclaimer, I’m not a musician nor am I that musically inclined, this isn’t an expert’s opinion or analysis, just a listener’s thoughts.
A bit of background of me before we start, I grew up around hip hop when I was young so I can really appreciate Knuckles’ soundtrack probably more so than a lot of other people.
Ever since I was a kid, Knuckles has always been my favorite character, I always found his complicated friendship and rivalry with Sonic to me a much more interesting dichotomy than Sonic and Shadow (I know, fight me).
That and I’ve always just adored his character (Before they forgot how to write him) he can be hot headed and stubborn like Sonic, but he’s got a bit of a Yin and Yang thing going on, with his Chill nature conflicting with his Quick and Explosive temper, as well as his questioning of his purpose in life and duty to the Master Emerald.
Anyway, enough context on myself, let’s strap in and get to the meat of this veeeeeery long post (My bad guys).

BACKGROUND

So for starters, I think it’s best we talk about the style and influences that are quite evident in Knuckles’ Music, that being Hip Hop/Rap, but it goes a bit further than that.
For some historical context, Sonic Adventure 2 came out in 2001, I’m not sure how many hip hop fans hang around the subreddit but by 2001 the Golden Age of Hip Hop had been firmly left behind. Biggie and Pac had been dead for a while, and the stars of yesteryear began to fizzle out as the young blood cropped up onto the scene.
The early 2000s Hip Hop scene was mainly dominated by the East Coast and the Dirty South, lots of stars of this generation of rap included 50 Cent, Ja Rule, Outkast, Ludacris, The Game, Three 6 Mafia and Xzibit, but you also had older legends like Nas and Snoop Dogg who were still culturally relevant.
This modern sound of hip hop differed greatly in sound to the early 90s, everything was a lot more clean and refined, samples were still used but weren’t as common as before and the West Coast sound that characterized the early 90s had been long gone.
It’s important to bring this up, because comparing SA2’s Hip Hop tracks to the climate it was released in, they sound almost out of place. Listening to Get Rich or Die Trying, or Stillmatic and then listening to SA3’s tracks you’d be convinced they were separated by many years.
The Tracks in SA2 are definitely rooted in early 90s hip hop, it’s very clear that those early Gangsta Rap albums like Straight Outta Compton and Black Sunday greatly influenced this part of the soundtrack. And you don’t have to take my word for it, go and listen to the instrumentals of songs like Express Yourself or Insane in the Brain and tell me that they’d sound out of place playing in one of Knuckles’ Stages.
Early 90s Hip Hop makes heavy use of sampling, primarily of the work of Black Artists of the past two decades, because of SA2K’s early 90s hip hop influences, it too has a lot of roots in 70s/80s Black music. Elements of Soul, Funk and Jazz are commonly heard in Knuckles’ Stages, think James Brown or Isaac Hayes.
So what Groups or Artists seem to inspire SA2K’s sound? Well the obvious choice is NWA, though specifically Straight Outta Compton, Elif4zaggin has a much different sound. However I don’t believe that’s entirely the case.
Whether it’s pure coincidence or intentional, Too Short (stylized as Too $hort) was a decently popular artist from Oakland, which is up in the Bay Area of NorCal which is the main inspiration for most of SA2’s urban environments.
Anyway, Too Short was actually quite a pioneer in Hip Hop as he formed the Dangerous Crew, a Hip Hop Band who played actual instruments instead of using samples, it’s because of this that I believe Too Short and the Dangerous Crew to be the main inspiration of SA2K’s sound whether intentional or not, not only are the two defined by their funky beats, but also their use of live instruments. I recommend listening to songs like The Ghetto, Sample The Funk and Just Another Day to get an idea of how his music influences SA2K.

UNKNOWN FROM M.E. (REMIX)

Honestly I find this track to be an improvement over the original, it definitely leans a lot more into the R&B aspect over the rest of the soundtrack but it’s still distinctly hip hop with the record scratches, drums and Hunnid-P rapping over it.
Speaking of, let’s address the Elephant in the room briefly. I know Hunnid-P or Hunnid-Pacent isn’t everybody’s favorite person on this sub, either on the track or behind the scenes, and while his antics aren’t relevant to this post, I don’t necessarily agree that he’s as bad as people say he is on the mic. Is he the world’s greatest emcee? Absolutely not, but he does his job pretty well, he has good flow and a pretty good voice. I think people clown on his lyrics too much, I’m not saying he’s an Inspectah Deck level lyricist but I think the guy has dropped a few bombs and this OST has some gems, but we’ll get into this in a bit.
Getting back to the song, the content of the lyrics is basically Knuckles’ inner voice, this is basically the entire soundtrack, though Unknown From M.E. is more of a general character overview of Knuckles, its standard stuff now but at the time it was a pretty deep dive into the character of Knuckles’ in a decently subtle way.
Most of the song centers around Knuckles’ self imposed isolation on Angel Island, his duty to his people and the world to protect the Master Emerald, but also him yearning for something more and the inner conflict that stems from that.
This song actually has some underrated lines, some standout lyrics include:
“Clench my fists tight, become more redder - I don't wanna hurt her, my passion observed”
The last line is in obvious reference to Rouge and an interesting insight into Knuckles himself. He clearly doesn’t like violence and isn’t interested in hurting anybody, but his duty as a guardian and his quick temper often means he can get a bit too carried away as the line implies, good stuff.
“Been lonely all my life, does it matter? - Here for the mission, whoever want, it bring it”
Here we can clearly see Knuckles trying to reason with himself here, specifically after meeting Sonic and experiencing a life that isn’t just his duty. Here we see the Guardian side of him, he’s always been alone and it’s never been problem before, why should it be now? At least that’s what he tries to tell himself.
“Don't approve of him but gotta trust him - This alliance has a purpose - This partnership is only temporary”
I’ll get more into this when we get to Death Chamber, but these lines are obviously alluding to Sonic and the plot of the game. It’s clear that Knuckles still doesn’t completely like Sonic, however the key here is that he trusts him, he’s gotten to a point now where he knows Sonic is well meaning and their goals align. However, just like real people, he’s accepted the arrangement but he doesn’t have to like it, he still believes Sonic is brash, arrogant and takes far too many risks, it will take more than a few adventures for Knuckles to fully change his opinion on Sonic.
Hunnid-P and Marlon Saunders do a great job of bouncing off each other on this song, their voices and cadences clash with each other nicely almost like how Knuckles’ inner turmoil is split in two.
The beat is tantalizingly funky, for starters that bass line is smooth as butter and the song has a nice tempo, you get the occasional organ flourish and guitar riff that crescendo and just help to enhance the song even further. Overall a really solid track in my opinion, the content of the lyrics is interesting and the delivery is great, all over an extremely funky instrumental.

KICK THE ROCK - WILD CANYON

Probably my favorite song out of all Knuckles’ Stages, this one is definitely the most Jazzy and parallels nicely with Rouge, but has a distinctly Knuckles Twist.
That Sax and Organ combo just cause an absolute eargasm and those drums form such a nice tempo that makes this track such easy listening. Honestly there’s not a whole lot going on with this track and that is not a bad thing at all. Its simplicity is probably its biggest strength and is quite noticeable compared to something like Unknown From M.E.
Some Lyrics I found particularly interesting are:
“I'm feelin her in mysterious ways - That's why I stay on point like every single day - I gotta protect this place, I do it for my race”
Yeah yeah I know everybody finds this line and the play doh line inappropriate and funny, I understand the latter but honestly I could never get the outcry over this one
“I’m feelin her in mysterious ways” honestly, in my opinion, it’s not what you think. I’ve never really seen it as a sexual line “I’m feelin you” is basically another way of saying I get you, it’s basically Knuckles saying he gets Rouge, but he doesn’t know why and that kinda bothers him.
The context matters here and the lines after do give my interpretation some weight. It’s basically Knuckles saying to himself “I get this girl and I kinda mess with her, but I gotta job to do” Knuckles is intrigued by Rouge, he’s never met anybody like her and he obviously has some feeling towards her, though because of his lack of interaction with others he struggles to understand these feelings and instead of addressing them, he tries to ignore them and remain true to his job as Guardian
“Who could'a did this, that snitch named Rouge! - When I catch her, I'ma get her with these tools”
More obvious than the last one, but it still shows that Knuckles, despite his various different feelings toward Rouge, knows he has a job to do and tries to center himself to stay committed
Honestly it’s hard to choose between this or Unknown From M.E. as my favorite Knuckles track but either way its up there and definitely something I can bop to on the regular

A GHOST’S PUMPKIN SOUP - PUMPKIN HILL

The one everybody knows and honestly I get it, it’s got that smooth piano/guitar I can’t really tell what it is but it definitely slaps. It has that distinct G-Funk whistle which pops up occasionally across SA2K that simulates that stereotypically ghostly sound nicely
It’s definitely in contention with Deeper for the most lowkey Knuckles track and that’s saying something.
Not much content lyrically, but I managed to find a few interesting lines:
“I ain’t gonna let it get to me, I’m just gon creep - Down in Pumpkin Hill I gots to find my lost piece”
Something we don’t actually see a lot from Knuckles, fear! Most of this song is about Knuckles’ fearlessness being tested, if you view this as Knuckles’ internal monologue (Which if you don’t at this point then I’ve been doing something wrong 😂) its less about the song telling us how tough Knuckles is, but Knuckles reassuring himself that he can do this.
He’s obviously trepidatious over being in Pumpkin Hill and he has to take a moment to center himself and reassure himself that “I’m Knuckles, I’m not afraid of anything” again this goes back to how Knuckles uses his job as Guardian and his duty to motivate himself and push forward through situations, regardless of his own fear.
“I’m hearing someone saying “You a chicken, don’t be scared!” - It had to be the wind, cause nobody wasn’t there”
Considering the haunted theming of this level, this very clearly (on the surface) seems to be Knuckles encountering a ghost taunting him, but I might present another angle.
This is just Knuckles’ inner thoughts again, though this time its doubt, he doesn’t believe he can find the pieces of the Master Emerald and he doesn’t think he can make it through Pumpkin Hill, yet he pushes through anyway. This one’s kinda far fetched but it’s a nice idea
I don’t adore this track as much as a lot of other people (ironically) but I can still Jive with it.

DIVE INTO THE MELLOW - AQUATIC MINE

First of all, this track does a great job at just sounding watery, the filtered organ and the echoey bass just make it sound like cave ambience turned into music
Most of this track’s lyrics center around Knuckles’ yearning to be something more than just the Guardian of the Master Emerald and to be his own individual, these are:
“Makes you wanna sit back, enjoy the life - And do things you like doing, get to shine”
Knuckles, if it wasn’t for all the enemies and hazards, obviously enjoys being in Aquatic Mine, so much so that it brings his thoughts of a better life to the front of his mind.
This shows what Knuckles really wants, to be unburdened from the Master Emerald and to just be free to kick it wherever, in a way he’s jealous of the freedom Sonic has and wishes he wasn’t tied down to Angel Island.
“I stay Knuckled up, I’m in a deep cut”
Knuckles, despite his ideals of peace and relaxation is always ready to do what he believes is right, again this whole OST is basically Knuckles reconciling his wants and his duties.
Again Knuckles isn’t really equipped to deal with these feelings and instead of addressing them, he pushes them down and buries them under his duty and tries to keep himself busy, though once he gets to Aquatic Mine where he’s forced to slow down and explore methodically, he’s suddenly unable to distract himself from his true feelings.
“In a maze, and I don't know what to do Guaranteed though, imma find the Emeralds”
Again an obvious allusion to the labyrinthine Aquatic Mine on the surface, though I believe this too has a deeper meaning.
Knuckles is lost and confused emotionally, he’s confronted by these different feelings that conflict with everything he’s ever known. His thoughts on freedom and his feelings for Rouge which he doesn’t quite understand both conflict with his role as Guardian and he can’t reconcile them.
“I don’t know what to do” in a rare moment of vulnerability, Knuckles admits that he has no idea how to manage these feelings and he’s grappling with the monumental task of managing his panicked thoughts.
Then, just as you think Knuckles is gonna start making a breakthrough, what does he do? “Guaranteed though, imma find the Emeralds” That’s right, instead of finally addressing his swirling thoughts, he pushes them down and once again distracts himself with his duty.
Honestly, like Pumpkin Hill, I know it’s a reach but it tracks with what we know Knuckles’ character has been up to this point and it gives him insane depth and really humanizes him.
A funky beat, a nice flow from Hunnid P and some really humanizing characterization of Knuckles, Dive Into The Mellow is definitely a hidden gem of the OST.

DEEPER - DEATH CHAMBER

Sooooooo chill, honestly this song is so calm and smooth, it’s so underrated on this soundtrack it really is another hidden gem like Dive Into the Mellow.
First off I absolutely adore the bass this track has, it sounds like it’s been bit compressed for a Gameboy and honestly I’m all here for it, gives it a nice techno Eggmany twist. The funky guitar and sax just enhances the mood, the song sounds almost echoey like you’re actually standing in a Death Chamber.
Lyrically this song is unique in that it’s basically just a long conversation between Sonic and Knuckles instead of Knuckles’ inner thoughts/monologue.
It’s an interesting dynamic where Sonic is actually the reasonable one, willing to put aside his and Knuckles’ differences aside for the greater good. Knuckles however is initially a bit more standoffish, but Sonic talks him into it by appealing to his guardian nature and calling him out on his stubbornness, basically forcing Knuckles to admit that Sonic is right and that they’ll be much better off working together.
Honestly not much to say, it’s pretty much all spelled out in the song, but interesting nonetheless. An understated and uniquely funky beat make this track stand out among the others nicely, definitely a great listen.

SPACE TRIP STEPS - METEOR HERD

Finally, the last song. In my opinion, Space Trip Steps is probably the weakest track musically. That doesn’t make it bad, far from it, I just can’t groove with it as easily as the others
This song takes a lot more inspirations from G-Funk than the other tracks which does give it quite a unique sound amongst the soundtrack, it wouldn’t sound out of place on The Chronic or Regulate… G Funk Era. The wavy synths and sharp base with the fast tempo give it an almost garage feel too, definitely not a sound for everyone but I think it does a good job at sounding very ethereal and space like
As for lyrics, this seems to be a turning point for Knuckles as a loner:
“Took a shuttle to space and left from our homes At least we're with friends and I'm not all alone”
Knuckles is in a completely foreign environment and feels completely out of his depth, however he feels comforted by the fact that he’s surrounded by the people he’s finally started to call his Friends, the first time he’s admitted such.
He’s forced now to acknowledge that he can’t do everything by himself, and that asking for help from his friends doesn’t make him any less of a man, he finally accepts that he can trust outsiders, but he still has a ways to go.
“Bad thing was that the Emeralds spilled - Gotta search space, man, time to get ill”
Still, Knuckles is bound and almost blinded by his duty, forcing himself to abandon his friends to search for the Master Emerald pieces that were scattered in space.
It’s clear now that Knuckles isn’t too happy to leave his friends, but as we’ve come to know him, he does the typical Knuckles thing of pushing his feelings to the side in the face of doing what he believes is right. This just tells us Knuckles still has a lot to work on before he can really come to terms with who he is.
Again, a pretty unconventional track so it can be an awkward listen and definitely not my favorite on the list, but it does something unique which I can definitely give it props for, Hunnid P even has a completely different flow, dragging out his words like he’s getting further away, hammering home that space theme.

CONCLUSION

And that’s it, if you made it this far through my long winded ramblings, then I’m extremely impressed 😂 I tried to trim the fat as best I could but I ended up getting a bit too attached to most of what I wrote
Honestly I feel like these songs have been unfairly painted as the silly crappy Knuckles rap songs with bad lyrics that are only good because of their instrumentals, and I just can’t agree with that.
I feel like in a lot of ways these songs do a much better job of characterizing Knuckles than SA1 or SA2, I really wish we got see more of his inner turmoil and him butting heads with Sonic in the game itself.
I think it’s a sad thought that for a long time, Knuckles has been a shadow of his former self (Har har) and has just been relegated to the token meathead that’s about as one dimensional as a square. Frontiers is definitely a step in the right direction and I’m excited to see what the new writing team can cook up with for his character.
But what are your thoughts though? Do you agree? Disagree? Did I manage to change your mind or have you always felt this way? Maybe you have a different take or something else to add? I’d love to hear it.

Lady Nephis was clad in a suit of knightly armor that had been forged from sublime white steel and adorned with golden accents. With her fair skin and silver hair, pure flames dancing in her eyes, she was like a spirit of light.
Lord of Shadows, meanwhile, was like a devil bor from pure darkness. His ominous onyx armor, demonic mask, and raven-black hair fused wit lightless void of the great hall, making it hard t discern where his figure ended and the shadows began.Sunny and Nephis were standing motionlessly, with almost no space between them. His right hand was gripping the hilt of her sword, which had been stopped a mere centimeter away from the onyx surface of his fearsome armor.
Her right hand, meanwhile, was gripping his left wrist. Held in his left hand was the hilt of the broken odachi, the jagged steel of its broken blade stopped several centimeters away from her neck.

2024.05.15 00:35 ReadingFamiliar3564 Given: BK=a, KL=b. Express the area of BCKM using a and b.

When studying for a math test I have on Thursday (11th grade, practice test for questionnaire 035581), I came across this question and I have no idea how to do C (Translated):
"A circle centered at point M is tangent to the rectangle ABCD at point K. AB and BL are chords in circle M. Point M is on BL.
A. Prove that angle KML is twice as big as angle KBC.
B. Which of the following statements is true and which is false? Explain.
  1. KM is the middle segment in trapezoid DLBC.
  2. The area of ΔLMK is equivalent to the area of ΔMKB
  3. ΔLAB~ΔBCK
C. Given: BK=a, KL=b. Express the area of BCKM using a and b.
D. Express the ratio SΔBKL:SΔDKL using a and b."
In B, the true ones are 1 and 2, 3 is incorrect- there's a 90 degree angle in both, but the other angles on ΔBCK are α and 90-α, and on ΔLAB are 2α and 90-2α (because alternate angles are equal between parallel lines and the sum of acute angles in a right triangle 90 degrees).
Help?

High above in her hiding spot, Zildiz had heard enough. The Leapers were her kindred’s most hated of adversaries, and she could not allow them to gain even a fraction of the grey behemoth’s awesome might. An apocalyptic vision arose in her mind of titanic Leaper variants towering over the rooftops of Chthonis, setting the Parchment City alight with beams of all-destroying light emanating from their many eyes.
Four against one. Those were slim odds even under the best of circumstances. Still, she had the element of surprise, and ambush predators were often unaccustomed to being preyed upon themselves. But Leapers were notoriously difficult opponents to sneak up on as they literally had eyes on the backs of their heads. But Zildiz was a veteran of countless border skirmishes, and had learned of a small blind spot in their vision. It was above and slightly behind the axis of their posterior lateral median eyes. But many Gallivants who had tried to make their first kill that way did not survive to tell the tale—the flutter of their wings gave them away. She would have to drop straight down on her first target. No hesitation, no second chances.
She saw the alpha Leaper lean down to extract the prey-form’s gilt helix, and saw her opening.
Rene heard a branch snap somewhere above him and felt a gust of wind blow across his neck, bearing with it droplets of moisture that pattered lightly against the visor of his mask. His first thought was that it had started to rain. He glanced up at the monster to find that it had extruded a new mouthpart, some manner of sharp, serrated tongue whose tip oozed a wet and viscous fluid. Rene flinched reflexively, expecting at any moment to feel the point punching through his skull before draining out its contents like a straw. But then the blade twisted sharply, wrenching its way out of the back of the monster’s head and drenching Rene’s mask in a shower of gore, the four-eyed devil letting out a wet gurgle as it slumped over in a twitching heap.
Pawing at his mask with his bound wrists, Rene peered through his smeared vision and saw a figure standing atop the corpse that, if anything, possessed an even less lovely countenance than his erstwhile interlocutor. A bulbous compound eye stared back Rene like a shattered mirror, a thousand miniscule reflections of himself repeating across its scaly lenses.
Rene recognized the creature as one of the harpies from earlier. One of its broad wings was missing. It drew its bloodstained blade across its mandibles, casually licking the weapon clean as an eight-limbed devil leapt at the harpy from behind, letting loose a bloodcurdling scream. But the harpy did not even turn at the sound, merely pointing its other blade arm behind it and letting its attacker impale itself upon it, clean through. With its dying spasms the devil pulled itself up the length of the blade in an effort to reach the harpy, even as its two kin recovered from their surprise and pounced at the harpy from either side. What followed was a blur of movement almost too quick for the human eye to follow as the harpy spun in place, cleaving the monster on the left halfway through its sternum. In the same movement it turned the devil stuck on the end of its blade into the path of the attacker on the right, using it as a living shield. The impact still bowled the harpy over, all four of the combatants rolling on the ground in a ball of threshing limbs and furious struggle.
The din was horrendous. Siezing the golden opportunity which had presented itself, Rene reached once more for the sword of the ancients, stretching his sinews for all they were worth. It was just enough to let him pinch the pommel-button between his middle and forefingers. Raising it up in spite of his trembling, sweat-slick grip, Rene coaxed the hilt into palm of his waiting hand, then pounded the button against his chest, feeling the sword come alive in his hands. As the fight raged on behind him, Rene sliced his legs free. He tucked in his head as he hit the ground, rolling onto his arse and reversing his grip on the sword, swiftly cutting the bonds around his wrists. When he tried to stand, however, he found that his legs were still unresponsive, all the blood within them having flowed up to his torso during his time spent hanging upside down. Pounding the life back into the clammy flesh of his calves with his fist, Rene looked anxiously around and discovered that the battle had since moved elsewhere, leaving two black-furred corpses in its wake. Cries of rage and a frenzied shaking among the bushes allowed him to guess where the other monsters were. He hoisted himself to his feet, picked up the safety kit and staggered away from the sounds of fighting, pins and needles still numbing the soles of his feet.
As he stepped over the dead bodies in his path, Rene was just about to congratulate himself on a smooth escape when his toes snagged on something and he tripped, going down heavily on his side. Rene felt a powerful yank on his ankle and looked to see the previously impaled monster glaring up at him. It wriggled on its belly and pulled him closer with one hand while it held in its spilled guts with the other three. By the ancestors, was it strong! Rene hacked at the hand holding his foot and lopped it off at the forearm, feeling only the slightest tug of resistance as the edge sheared through bone and meat alike. The hand was still clamped shut about his ankle with a death grip as he stood back up.
The fiend’s back arched as it brought its vile hump of flesh to the fore, dozens of sucking orifices on its misshapen surface spreading open wide.
Thwip! Thwip!
Jets of silk flew out of the spinnerets, the monster using its claws to grasp the threads and shuttering them back and forth like the shuttles of a loom. Cords flicked out and ensnared Rene’s sword arm, pinning it to his side while the weaver applied a lightning-fast field dressing on its abdominal wound, closing off both ends with wads of its makeshift bandage. Rene strained mightily against the loops of silk, but they never budged an inch. Meanwhile, the monster raked him with its claws, opening bright lines of agony across his chest and shoulder. Rene bit back a scream and dropped the sword point-first into the soil. It sank quivering up to its hilt, leaving him completely defenseless as the monster jumped and snatched him up in its gangly embrace. Rene fell to one knee as its weight bore him to the earth, reaching out with his free hand to draw the sword out of the ground and cleave through its rows of hairy legs.
Severed limbs went rolling every which way, the black devil tottering. Yet as it fell its outer mouthparts seized Rene by the temples and pinned him in place as it bit right into his face. Venomed fangs skittered across the transparent surface of his mask, scoring it with deep scratches. To his amazement the crystal held strong and did not shatter—once more the materials of the ancients had proven their incredible durability. Rene worked his arm clear and chopped wildly at the monster’s arms, felt its hold on him slacken as they fell away, leaving only spurting stumps. The butchered devil fell on its humped back and began shrieking its head off.
Rene raised his sword to deliver the coup de grace but was interrupted by the sudden reemergence of the other combatants who burst back onto the scene. The harpy was grappling with one of the devils, quickly being overpowered by its brute strength. As the devil sank its fangs into the bulging pair of compound eyes and tore off the top of the harpy’s head, the latter found an opening and slipped both its blades through in tight uppercutting motions, ramming them under the devil’s chin and out the other end. Ripping outwards and across with its arms the harpy tore its enemy’s head apart and sent the soggy chunks scattering into the treetops.
Reeling in obvious pain, it kicked the body aside and took off with a shutter of its wings, attempting an escape. A feral scream split the air as, the last devil leapt up to intercept it, entrails dangling in the place of its missing lower body. Devoid of sanity or self-preservation, it tacked the rising harpy and sent both of them crashing into a stout branch. They fell back to the earth with a bone-crunching thump, followed by a confetti-shower of dead leaves shaken from their stems.
Rene looked back at his enemy and saw the devil stubbornly gathering itself up for another spring. All it had left were a single arm and leg apiece, that and a merciless glitter in its eyes.
“You can’t be serious,” he complained, and put an end to its efforts by splitting its head right down the middle. Rene shook his head in disbelief and went over to polish off the other two, snipping his webbed arm loose as he did. He found the bisected devil crawling on its elbows and mewling with pain as it wriggled towards the unmoving body of the harpy, clearly intending to finish what it had started.
There were eyes on the back of its head, Rene now noticed. Four of them, the same number as on the front. It saw him coming and rolled over, raising its arms to shield itself.
Rene’s boot came stomping down all the same. He felt its head crunching under his heel as he squashed it into a flattened pie and was nauseated. Rene then approached the harpy, eyeing its blade arms warily and giving it a wide berth. He didn’t want to get anywhere near those frightful things, not after what he’d seen. Instead he went over to a fallen log and cut himself an oversized club from one of its boughs. Sticking the sword back into the ground, he hefted the length of wood over the harpy, intending to smash its head in from a distance.
He felt strangely squeamish at prospect of another head going splat. A wave of dizziness came over him and he had to take a moment to collect himself, doubling over and beginning to dry heave. Leaning heavily on the bough like a staff, he examined the harpy and thought that it looked sufficiently dead. Through the gaping holes in its face he saw the gooey interior of its head. Was that its brain poking through the cracks in the armored hide? Blimey, it had a big one. Equal parts revolted and intrigued, Rene reached over with the branch and prodded at it, testing for a reflex.
Nothing. Better to be safe than sorry, though. Rene raised the bough on high and steeled himself to do the deed once and for all.
A piece of the head fell away, and Rene gasped. Abandoning common sense, he threw aside the club and squatted over the body, frantically tearing off the rest of its cranial casing, plunging his fingers into the sticky mess and pulling out clumps of armored flesh until what lay beneath was finally revealed.
Rene clutched at his forehead as if it was about to explode. Backing away with a sense of dawning horror, he repeated over and over to himself: “It can’t be. It can’t be, it can’t! That’s not possible! It’s…it’s…”
Beautiful.
That was what Rene had meant to say. But the word felt so utterly absurd given the context that it took all his will to keep from bursting into a fit of deranged laughter. And who could have blamed him?
For beneath the ruined visage of flesh, the creature wore the face of a woman.
