Omega-3 Supplements May Reduce Aggression Neuroscience News [May 2024]
Summary: A new study found that omega-3 supplementation can reduce aggression by 30%. The study reviewed 29 randomized controlled trials, showing short-term benefits across various demographics. Researchers advocate for using omega-3 supplements as a complementary treatment for aggressive behavior.
Key Facts:
  • Aggression Reduction: Omega-3 supplementation can reduce aggression by 30%.
  • Study Scope: Meta-analysis included 29 trials with 3,918 participants.
  • Broader Benefits: Omega-3 is also beneficial for heart health and is safe to use.

People who regularly eat fish or take fish oil supplements are getting omega-3 fatty acids, which play a critical role in brain function. Research has long shown a basis in the brain for aggressive and violent behavior, and that poor nutrition is a risk factor for behavior problems.
Penn neurocriminologist Adrian Raine has for years been studying whether omega-3 supplementation could therefore reduce aggressive behavior, publishing five randomized controlled trials from different countries.
This meta-analysis shows that omega-3 reduced both reactive aggression, which is behavior in response to a provocation, and proactive aggression, which is planned. Credit: Neuroscience News
He found significant effects but wanted to know whether these findings extended beyond his laboratory.
Now, Raine has found further evidence for the efficacy of omega-3 supplementation by conducting a meta-analysis of 29 randomized controlled trials. It shows modest short-term effects—he estimates this intervention translates to a 30% reduction in aggression—across age, gender, diagnosis, treatment duration, and dosage.
Raine is the lead author of a new paper published in the journal Aggressive and Violent Behavior, with Lia Brodrick of the Perelman School of Medicine.
“I think the time has come to implement omega-3 supplementation to reduce aggression, irrespective of whether the setting is the community, the clinic, or the criminal justice system,” Raine says.
“Omega-3 is not a magic bullet that is going to completely solve the problem of violence in society. But can it help? Based on these findings, we firmly believe it can, and we should start to act on the new knowledge we have.”
He notes that omega-3 also has benefits for treating heart disease and hypertension, and it is inexpensive and safe to use.
“At the very least, parents seeking treatment for an aggressive child should know that in addition to any other treatment that their child receives, an extra portion or two of fish each week could also help,” Raine says.
This meta-analysis shows that omega-3 reduced both reactive aggression, which is behavior in response to a provocation, and proactive aggression, which is planned.
The study included 35 independent samples from 29 studies conducted in 19 independent laboratories from 1996 to 2024 with 3,918 participants. It found statistically significant effects whether averaging effect sizes by study, independent sample, or by laboratory.
Only one of the 19 labs followed up with participations after supplementation ended, so the analysis focused on changes in aggression from beginning to end of treatment for experimental and control groups, a period averaging 16 weeks.
While there is value in knowing whether omega-3 reduces aggression in the short-term,” the paper states, “the next step will be to evaluate whether omega-3 can reduce aggression in the long-term.”
The paper notes several other possible avenues for future research, such as determining whether brain imaging shows that omega-3 supplementation enhances prefrontal functioning, whether genetic variation impacts the outcome of omega-3 treatment, and whether self-reported measures of aggression provide stronger evidence for efficacy than observer reports.
“At the very least, we would argue that omega-3 supplementation should be considered as an adjunct to other interventions, whether they be psychological (e.g. CBT) or pharmacological (e.g. risperidone) in nature, and that caregivers are informed of the potential benefits of omega-3 supplementation,” the authors write.
They conclude, “We believe the time has come both to execute omega-3 supplementation in practice and also to continue scientifically investigating its longer-term efficacy.”
Adrian Raine is the Richard Perry Professor of Criminology, Psychiatry, and Psychology and a Penn Integrates Knowledge professor with joint appointments in the School of Arts & Sciences and Perelman School of Medicine.
Lia Brodrick was a teaching assistant for Raine as an undergraduate at Penn and is now a clinical research coordinator at the Perelman School of Medicine.

Abstract
Omega-3 supplementation reduces aggressive behavior: A meta-analytic review of randomized controlled trials
There is increasing interest in the use of omega-3 supplements to reduce aggressive behavior.
This meta-analysis summarizes findings from 29 RCTs (randomized controlled trials) on omega-3 supplementation to reduce aggression, yielding 35 independent samples with a total of 3918 participants.
Three analyses were conducted where the unit of analysis was independent samples, independent studies, and independent laboratories. Significant effect sizes were observed for all three analyses (g = 0.16, 0.20, 0.28 respectively), averaging 0.22, in the direction of omega-3 supplementation reducing aggression.
There was no evidence of publication bias, and sensitivity analyses confirmed findings. Moderator analyses were largely non-significant, indicating that beneficial effects are obtained across age, gender, recruitment sample, diagnoses, treatment duration, and dosage.
Omega-3 also reduced both reactive and proactive forms of aggression, particularly with respect to self-reports (g = 0.27 and 0.20 respectively).
It is concluded that there is now sufficient evidence to begin to implement omega-3 supplementation to reduce aggression in children and adults – irrespective of whether the setting is the community, the clinic, or the criminal justice system.

Tanque Verde Ranch Resort - brief review
We (35f, 42m, 10m) just got back from Tanque Verde Ranch Resort, a historic homestead ranch that dates back to the 1800s, but has been updated and renovated into a proper dude ranch in Tucson, Arizona. Also the set of Hey, Dude! if anyone else was a nickelodeon kid!
I recently joined the sub and have been loving all the advice and wanted to try to contribute. I’ve seen Tanque Verde mentioned a couple times and figured it might save someone else the trip!
Location
It’s located in Tanque Verde about a 40min drive or 50 min shuttle (they provide for $60/pp) from the Tucson airport, and about 45 min from downtown Tucson.
Property
  • About 70rooms/casitas spread across the property. Some of the rooms are newer, and some have living rooms/fireplaces. None have tvs, which I liked. We stayed in 21 which had an incredible view of the property and mountains in the distance. It also had a sitting room of two couches (I think they pulled out) a desk, large fireplace, and two queens in the bedroom. All in fine not too kitschy southwestern decor. I would rate the rooms as slim (not chubby and most certainly not fat!) but not priced accordingly.
  • They have an indoor pool and hot tub as well as outdoor with waterfall feature that are open 24/7
  • the property is VERY family friendly, with a kids club that runs everyday from 7-3, activities across the property (think: archery, BB gun, fishing, nature center, horseback riding lessons, horsemanship, etc)
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner you have the option to eat from the very good buffet with plenty of hot options, changed daily, or the option of ordering a la carte. The food is very decent in a stick to your bones, hearty cowboy fare kind of way.
  • Service from the staff was very average - with minimal handholding and actually a kind of brusqueness that made us feel like we were in the way, although my husband fared better than me with receiving courtesies (he’s also Caucasian which may play into that).
What’s the stand-out feature
  • The lure of Tanque Verde is the horses. They are a working horse ranch of over 100 horses (they lease more in the spring/fall/winter during their busy season so they are able to accommodate more riders)
  • They provide horsemanship lessons as well as walking trail rides, a fun breakfast ride (you can do with the kids), and walking sunset rides. They also provide an opportunity for more advanced riders to take a “lope test” where they examine your seated trot, and your ability to sit a lope with a relaxed rein in order to participate in one of their one hour lope rides (groups of 8-9 people lead by one wrangler with 3-4 opportunities to lope in a line behind the wrangler for about 60 second intervals).
Who is this for?
-If you want the “cowboy experience” but haven’t had a lot of tangible experience with horses before this is a great entry-way - if you have children or teens, there’s a fantastic program for the kids which teaches them about the horses as well as the desert wildlife and allows them the opportunity to make friends - if you love desert vistas, the property abuts Saguaro National Park and Catalina State Park - nature lovers - we saw a baby coyote on one of our rides, as well as a doe passively watching us from the shade under a tree. there are also bats, lizards, hummingbirds, javelinas, and all sorts of critters in and outside of the nature center on property.
Who is this not for?
  • If you are an experienced equestrian or advanced rider who enjoys freedom or autonomy when it comes to riding
Added photos for good measure!
Happy to answer questions.
And as an avid rider and horse-y person very open to suggestions on better places to go! I have been riding internationally (Morocco, Turkey, Namibia, Ireland, France, england, Argentina, Mexico) and loving it but would love some places to have really fun, fast rides a little closer to home (USA).

2024.05.29 05:36 Hornet-Formigante A objetificação humana (redação do Enem...)

A objetificação humana (redação do Enem...)
Então, é a mesma receita do bolo.
A objetificação causa controle, causa dúvida, causa depressão.
Boa noite.
Tenho prova de química amanhã 🥶

The Best Places to Find Inexpensive Land for Sale
The Best Places to Find Inexpensive Land for Sale
Picture owning a parcel of land that you can refer to as yours, where you can construct your ideal residence, initiate a small farm, or simply possess a fraction of nature to retreat to. However, discovering reasonably priced land available for purchase can appear to be a challenging mission. The pleasing news is that there are still an abundance of economical choices out there if you recognize where to explore. In this piece, we shall investigate a few of the finest sources to uncover cost-effective land for sale.1. The Midwest The Midwest area of the United States is distinguished for its cost-effective land values. States such as Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa boast extensive expanses of unoccupied land that is ideal for farming or erecting a residence. The sparse population density in these regions signifies that land rates are usually more affordable than in other parts of the nation. Additionally, the Midwest offers a range of terrains, from level prairies to undulating hills, so there is something for everyone.2. The South The southern states of the United States, including Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, are also excellent locations to discover budget-friendly land for sale. These states have a cheaper cost of living compared to many other parts of the nation, which translates to land prices as well. The warm climate and stunning vistas render the South an appealing choice for those seeking to procure cost-effective land.3. Remote Areas If you are ready to seek outside of major cities and urban locales, you can frequently discover economical land for sale in remote areas. These locations are perfect for individuals who are searching for a tranquil and peaceful setting, far from the commotion of city life. In remote areas, land prices are typically lower, and you may be able to locate more extensive lots of land for a portion of the cost of smaller plots in more thickly inhabited areas.4. Foreclosure Sales Another alternative for discovering economical land for sale is to attend foreclosure auctions. When a property owner falls behind on their mortgage, the property may be taken back by the bank and set up for auction. This can be an exceptional chance to find land at a reduced price. Nevertheless, it is vital to undertake comprehensive research prior to placing a bid on a property at a foreclosure auction, as these transactions frequently come with hazards and intricacies.5. Undeveloped Land Undeveloped land, also referred to as raw land or vacant land, is another alternative for finding reasonably priced land. This form of land does not encompass any buildings or structures, which can render it less costly than developed land. Undeveloped land can be a marvelous investment for those who intend to erect their own residence or simply retain the land until its value appreciates.6. Web-based Listings In today's digital era, the internet is a remarkable reservoir for discovering cost-effective land for sale. Several websites and platforms focus on cataloging land for sale, enabling you to explore properties based on location, price, and size. This can save you a substantial amount of time and effort in comparison to traditional methods of seeking land.7. Government Land Sales Certain government agencies, such as the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), vend land at reduced prices, particularly in remote and secluded areas. These properties are generally sold through online auctions or direct sales and can be an excellent choice for those in quest of economical land.8. Land For Sale By Owner When land is vended directly by the owner, it can frequently be more economical than when sold through a real estate agent. By interacting directly with the seller, you may be able to negotiate a lower price and economize on agent fees. Nonetheless, it is crucial to carry out your due diligence and validate that the property is devoid of any encumbrances or concerns prior to purchasing.9. Land Located in Opportunity Zones Opportunity Zones are earmarked areas where investors can obtain tax advantages for investing in real estate. These areas are frequently economically distressed, and engaging in land located there can offer significant savings because of tax incentives.10. Parcel Size Lastly, contemplate the expanse of the land you are seeking to procure. Often, larger parcels of land are vended at a lower per-acre price than smaller parcels, rendering them a more budget-friendly choice. If you are in search of a larger piece of land, buying a single large parcel may be more economical than procuring multiple smaller parcels. To conclude, there are still countless options accessible for discovering economical land for sale. From the Midwest to the South, remote areas to foreclosure auctions, there are numerous chances to find affordable land. By weighing these diverse options and conducting comprehensive research, you can secure the ideal parcel of land at a price that aligns with your budget. Whether you are aiming to construct a residence, commence a farm, or invest in real estate, there are ample avenues for discovering economical land for sale. With the appropriate approach and some patience, you can transform your aspiration of possessing land into a reality.

Nisso, eu me pergunto, se sou tão bonito quanto me dizem, porque nenhuma garota quer conversar mais comigo?

2024.05.28 21:40 MeldrickCarter Tower of Babel / Ziggurat / Oldest View?

Tower of Babel / Ziggurat / Oldest View?
https://preview.redd.it/imrwnf1c083d1.png?width=448&format=png&auto=webp&s=b67ab36ae795e0acd3c93ff6abd2ccc697f723ed
So I spoke in church this past Sunday on the Tower of Babel in the Book of Genesis, and in my preparation I fell into a bit of a rabbit hole and found that some scholars believe the Tower of Babel was actually the ancient Mesopotamian Ziggurat of Marduk, now in ruins located in modern-day Iraq. These ziggurats were massive rectangular temples with ascending stairs, built with the idea of man trying to reach heaven, or reach the gods. This pride and arrogance is what caused God to destroy Babel and confuse the language of man, who up until that point in history had only one language.
Now the ascending stairs were enough to get me thinking of The Oldest View, with both the stairs to the AMC level in the Valley View Mall, and that mysterious clip at the end of Life of a Giant with those old, ruin-like stairs (which resembles those in the mall). But the scripture of the Babel story itself got me thinking even more. In Genesis 11:4 the people say, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” But then God gets involved, confusing their language and forcing them all over the earth, as in the beginning He gave man the command to "fill the earth." Genesis 11: 8-9 reads, "So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth."
Man's fear of dispersal caused them to build the tower in the first place, only for it to ironically cause them to get dispersed. Another aside, the Tower of Babel story happens right on the heels of the story of Noah, when God purged the world through a great flood due to the rampant sin and corruption. Right before the Flood, in Genesis 6: 4-5, it reads: "The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." The Hebrew word for Nephilim literally translates to "Giant". It is thought that the Nephilim/giants (not so anatomically modern!) are the spawn of these rebellious angels who slept with human women and led to all this evil. The apocryphal Book of Enoch and Book of the Giants goes into a lot of detail of that pre-Flood time, including the banishment of these fallen angels into chains beneath the earth. Fragments of these two books were among many discovered in the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Now a huge theme of the The Oldest View seems to be nostalgia. And with malls like Valley View being torn down more and more these days, the memories are being dispersed with us. And what better modern-day symbol of a towetemple/ziggurat than a mall? Us humans worshipping at the altar of commercialism and corporate power, and then chasing the memories of those places when they're no longer. Man started in a garden of Eden (plants, botany, Julien Reverchon!) only to be kicked out. This lush land of ours is constantly being built upon and torn down--Dallas, Texas being but a microcosm, first the failed attempt of the utopian La Reunion coming to an end after some fiscal mismanagement and bad weather, and then a mall built on top of it over a century later which also had its time for but a moment before being torn down, and now this Dallas Midtown Project is set to take its place.
It's a lot of rambling more than a solid theory at this point, but I thought I'd share it nevertheless...

2024.05.28 21:35 NerdyArchimedes Compilation of Mahiru/Kano stuff from the Voice Dramas and X (through Ep 8)

There is quite a bit of untranslated material for this series getting released alongside the anime. Since I'm just a bit obsessed with the MahiKano pair I went digging around in it to see if there was anything that could shed some light on their delightfully (and frustratingly) ambiguous relationship. There is actually lots of interesting stuff so I thought I'd share what I've found as we approach the last four episodes. I think my translations are pretty decent but be aware I'm by no means fluent. Google-sensei assisted.
Unfortunately, none of it is "proof" of any romantic feelings between the two and some of it makes things even more puzzling, but it is yet more to add to what we already have.

Voice Drama

Every week there is a short voice drama that gives an extra scene taking place around the time of the most recent episode. Some of them have a bit of MahiKano, and a couple of them have a lot. It is recommended to read along with the video.
Ep 3: (Basically) Mahiru asks Kiui to explain a meme she heard classmates using that she had pretended to understand, and it had been bugging her. After some prodding Kiui fully explains it for her. [3:47] Kiui: "So, do you feel refreshed?" Mahiru: "Refreshed! I am super refreshed!... Ah, didn't I sound a bit like Kano-chan just now?" Kiui: "Like I'd know! I'm not that close to her." Mahiru: "Oh that's right huh." Mahiru: "Your training is insufficient." Kiui: "Hey now, that is on the same level as the comments I get even if it is a better quality one."
Ep 5: Before they go do their first shrine visit, the four of them talk about JELEE's growth. [0:36] Yoru: "It doesn't really feel like it but it has been some time already. From Halloween it's been...about two months?" Kano [dramatically]: "Yup. On that day, Yoru and I had our fated meeting." Mei: "That makes me kind of jealous." Kiui: "No, it doesn't matter when you joined." Kano: "We're all precious JELEE teammates." Yoru: "Yup."
Ep 6: Mahiru and Kano go to the place Miiko works at to meet up with her for dinner after she finishes her shift. [0:37]
Kano: "Ooo, the yakitori looks delicious. It is wonderfully arranged isn't it, Yoru-sensei? Mahiru: "No, I just arranged it normally." Kano: "It must be your "sense" talking again." Mahiru: "Geez."
Due to Kiui and Mei already having not been able to come with and Miiko taking on an extra shift and needing to cancel, it ends up being just the two of them. The topic turns to school. [2:03]
Kano: "Ahhh.... oh yeah, winter break has ended for us, huh?" Mahiru: "Kano-chan, you forgot about school being a thing didn't you?" Kano: "Well, you see, it doesn't make a difference whether or not I go." Mahiru: "When the new term starts we're gonna be 3rd years you know? It is our last year being high school girls so we gotta FULLY enjoy it or wouldn't it be a big waste?" Kano: [playfully] "I dunno~. Yoru, you really are a bit calculating about that..." Mahiru: "...Eh?" Mahiru: "No, I was just thinking it really is better to have fun is all." Kano: "But rather than being at school, isn't it more fun doing stuff with everyone in JELEE?" Mahiru: "That may be true but I'd say it is better to have fun from both." Kano: [dramatically] "Hmmm... I shall take that under consideration." Mahiru: "But you know, going straight for the goal you currently have in front of you is a very Kano-chan thing to do." Kano: [giggle] "Like I thought Yoru really understands me!" Mahiru: "I wasn't praising you 'k?" Kano: [playfully] "Eeeh?" Mahiru: "Hey now, don't forget about the yakitori. Which one do you want to eat Kano-chan?" Kano: "Then, for starters I'll go with salted!" Mahiru: "That kinda sounds like something a connoisseur would say." Kano: "I ate a different kind last time so this time is salted!" Mahiru: "There really was a proper reason..." Kano: [munching] "... ... what is it?" Mahiru: [evasively] "Nope, nothing. I wonder what I should have."
Ep 7: Kano and Kiui chat while in the bath together. Before long, Kano shifts the conversation to Mahiru [0:50] Kano: "By the way Kiui, have you ever bathed with Yoru?" Kiui: "Yeah. 'Though in saying that, it was just back in elementary school. Like when she'd come over to my house we'd take a bath together." Kano: "Heeh. I do kinda have the image of childhood friends going on family trips together and stuff." Kiui: "Mahiru in the past would draw art wherever she went. Even when we were spending time together she'd still be drawing, We'd often get scolded for losing track of time while drawing." Kano: "I feel that side of Yoru hasn't changed. Especially recently!" Kiui: "That may be!" Kano: "But at the time you also drew with her right?" Kiui: "That was a while ago but yes. I do still draw stuff for use in my videos but back then Mahiru would come over to my place for us to do it." Kano: "Eh? You're talking about when she'd come over to play?" Kiui: "You haven't heard from Mahiru? My place is an art class." Kano: *gasp "First I've heard! I seeee, nooow I get it." Kiui: "What did you just understand?" Kano: "No, just a feeling." Kiui: "Hey you..." Kano: "But you know, hearing about a side of Yoru I didn't know made me kinda happy." Kiui: "So sorry that you're stuck with someone you're not interested in here." Kano: [shouts] "That isn't true! I also love Kiui you know!" Kiui: "I was joking! Don't shout so loudly in the bath..." Kano: "Aah. Sor-, sorry." Kiui: "And so, tomorrow we're going to talk about you." Kano: "Eh? Me?" Kiui: "Just talking about me is unfair wouldn't you say?" Kano: "Hmm. But you know, you didn't really say that much about yourself?" Kiui: "I told you about what you wanted to hear didn't I? Kano: "Hmm... tell me one more thing!" Kiui: "If you will tell me a decent story, I'll think about it." Kano: "Oooo...alright! In that case I shall prepare something special." Kiui: "Now you've said it. I'm pretty difficult to satisfy you know?" Kano: "And I have some pretty good stuff you know. Like all kinds of stuff from my SunDolls days... fu, fu, fuuu. Kiui: "What is with that weird laugh? Alright then, what would you tell me for a secret story about when the jellyfish mural was made?" Kano: [excited] "Eh!? What's with that I wanna hear! Ask me anything! I'll tell you anything!" Kiui: "Woah, you're way too easy."
Ep 8: [0:00] Kano: "It's evening (yoru)." Kiui: "It sure is evening." Mei: "It is evening indeed." Mahiru: "Uh, it is like my name is being called over and over and feels rather strange." Kiui: "Tell that to Kano. She is the only one who calls you 'Yoru'." Kano: "But Yoru is Yoru isn't she? Ah, now it is 'Mahiru' (midday)!" Mei: "So deep..." Mahiru: "It's not deep at all. Anyways isn't everyone too worn out? We took the trouble to take a bath so it really should have a "refresh" kind of feel..." Kiui: "Even if you say that, you're actually tired from working all the time, right?" Mei: "Entering the bath made all my tiredness come out..." Kiui: "When you're tired that is actually the correct response." Mahiru: "Anyways, don't you not know what to talk about at times like these?" Kiui: "True, we are the Inexperienced Squad." Mei: "I have experience but I didn't have friends!" Mahiru: "It is hard to react to that...." Kiui: "And so Mahiru, offer us a topic for high school girls." Mahiru: "What?" Kano: "Oh, nice. Mahiru does do the most high school girl stuff." Mei: "I also agree with Nono-tan." Mahiru: [groan] Kiui: "So there we go Mahiru. We're counting on you." Mahiru: "Eeh, what a way to leave it to someone else..." Mahiru: "Hmm, lets see. The standard really is... love talk or something?" Kano/Kiui/Mei: [gasps/oooh/hm?]" Mahiru: "What is with those reactions..." Mahiru: "Let alone high school girls, it is a standard for girls!" Kiui: "No, are you saying that thinking we actually have anything?" Mei: "In the first place romance is banned for Nono-tan!" Kano: "No, it wasn't particularly banned. I didn't have that kind of person but [dramatically] maybe my fans were my lover." Mei: "Nono-tan...!" Mahiru: "Yeah, this was my mistake. I made a mistake." Kiui: "As long as you understand, it is fine." Mahiru: "It kinda looks like this has become my fault now..." Mei: "But for you to have brought it up, Mahiru, you must have something right? Love talk." Mahiru: "ah...eh..." Kano: [gasp] "...Mahiru?" Mahiru: "Right now it would be my art, really." Kiui: "She sure ran away." Kano: "She ran away." Mei: "She ran away indeed." Mahiru: "Because right now everyone in JELEE is like my lover!" Kano: "Ah, in that case that is how it for me too!" Mei: "Of course me too!" Kiui: "Then me too." [all laughs] Mahiru: "I guess, in the end it wasn't love talk at all." Kano: "But this sort of thing is kinda fun." Kiui: "It is like us." Kiui: "When we were at the driving school too, just talking about whatever was fun." Kano: "Yup. I got to hear a ton about Mahiru's past." Mahiru: "Eh? Hey wait, Kiui-chan I didn't hear about this!" Kiui: "I got to hear a whooole lot of Kano's secrets too." Mei: "Ki-, Kiwi-san!? Are you trying to steal a lead! I, too, want to hear stories about Nono-tan!" Kano: "My secrets are pretty expensive you know?" Mei: "One-, Is one hundred thousand enough? No, how about one million?" Kano: "No no don't take out mone......hm?" Mei: [rummaging around] "Lets see here, to immediately withdraw it from my account... (etc.)" Kano: "Wai- joke! It was a joke! For now close your wallet!"

JELEE Tweets

One of the ways the creators of this work is bringing it out into the real world is by having an X account for JELEE run by the main characters in-universe. It started off from even before episode 1 aired with Kano tweeting her thoughts and eventually all four members are using the account. Many of the tweets simply acknowledge events from the anime but there are quite a few that give new information or a second perspective about stuff. Here are some of the MahiKano-relevant ones. Check the tweet link for the actual emoticons and pictures.

X JELEE Is this the so-called "fated meeting" thing? [sparkle x2] When episode 1 aired.
X JELEE I went with the new member to karaoke. I'm always doing solo karaoke so this was crazy fun!! This was before Mei joined (who doesn't like singing anyways) so this was a Kano & Mahiru outing.
X JELEE I'm glad JELEE-chan's design could also be shown off [cry, heart]. It is the girl from the MV~!. Isn't she the absolute cutest? The one who drew her was my beloved illustrator, the one in charge of JELEE's illustrations: Umitsuki Yoru~ [sparkle x2] Talking about the "Invincible Girl" MV.
X JELEE It seems Yoru can also cook. So skillful~ I wonder if she'd cook for me sometime~ or something… [squee]
X JELEE Tadah! A jellyfish came out~~ Actually it wasn't mine, it came from Yoru's lol. I'll cherish it--[cry] Continuation of a tweet about the choco eggs from ep 4.
X JELEE Yoru's homemade cream stew [hand over eyes, heart]
X JELEE It is from the song illustration - yes, from Yoru's illustration - that I made this song! The lyrics came to me the moment I saw the picture, and it was so much fun! [sparkle x2] Talking about the "Shibuya Aquarium" MV.
X Yoru ^ Thank you JELEE-chan. From now on, I want to create more things like this where various worlds can expand from a single picture.
X JELEE When we went to the aquarium recently, Yoru called the garden eels to be "so cool!"... Her "sense" really is something! [laugh]
X Yoru ^ Wait, JELEE-chan!! The story about the garden eels is embarrassing... [covering eyes] I love sea creatures so I get excited... Here's a picture of the jellyfish I saw.
X Kimura When I heard Yoru-san and JELEE-san went to the aquarium together the other day I've gotten so jealous... Aaaaaah it seems like something will happen... [cry x3] It feels like I need to do something.
X JELEE ^ There, there, calm down Kimura-chan~[halo] I'll go again with you, so cheer up.
X Kimura ^ Haaa~~~ I love you JELEE-san!!!!!!!!! Absolutely, please let us have a passionate day!!!!!
X Nox It seems Yoru and JELEE went to see a movie I was interested in "Angels and Demons". They recommended it to me… Did everyone else see it? Give me your impressions! This is the movie we see a glimpse of in ep 1. No idea if they went to the movies then or if it was more recent.
X JELEE Nice question [wink] Of course it is "yoru" [heart] Part of a series of answering questions from fans. This one was "What time of day do you like? It's gotta be "yoru" right?"
X Yoru ^ Wait JELEE-chan…! That's embarrassing…!
X JELEE It's a must-see for Yorufans, full of materials from "JELEE" and illustrations drawn by Yoru. [kiss throw] --Umitsuki Yoru's Representative Fan, JELEE Part of a tweet by Kano encouraging fans to check out Yoru's pixiv.
X Yoru ^ JELEE-chan is muttering embarrassing things again. I update at my own pace, so the pictures I upload may vary, but I hope you enjoy them.
X JELEE Yesterday, Yoru made some omelet rice and brought it to me because she was worried about my eating habits. Isn't she too kind?? I'm falling in love~ [flushed face]
X Kimura ^ F- Falling in…? Eh…? Just wait a moment. I also have confidence in my flavors!!! My SaShiSuSeSo is perfect! Enough that I have an original customization! Salsa, cinamon, vinegar, back fat, and Worcestershire sauce. Next time I'll bring you my specialty dish! SaShiSuSeSo is a mnemonic to remember the basic seasonings of Japanese cooking. Translated, it is SUPPOSED to stand for sugar, salt, vinegar, soy sauce, and miso.
X Yoru ^ Kimura-chan…calm down! (Also, your SaShiSuSeSo is very peculiar…lol) In that case lets have a Cooking Practice Meet at JELEE's next time.
X JELEE ^ Nice! I'm in charge of eating, so I'm counting on you.
X Yoru Actually, the four of us have been talking about going to the aquarium together, and I'm really looking forward to it. What are everyone's favorite sea creatures? Of course mine are just jellyfish, lol!
X Yoru ^ By the way, my #1 fave is the crystal jelly!!! Aequorea victoria, the specific species used as the motif for this series.
X JELEE ^ Mine too! As expected of Yoru!! We really get along [heart hands]
X Kimura ^ I support the sacamambaspis and JELEE-san! Sacamambaspis is an extinct fish that went viral in Japan.
X Nox ^ I'd say mine is the giant isopod~. Its form is electrifying! Giant isopod
X Yoru ^ It's great everyone's interests are coming out!! Now I'm even more excited to go to the aquarium! I'll take my drawing kit with me.

2024.05.28 19:27 gloomy__pangolin To Build a Starship Part 10

Their trip to the Phobos shipyards was more of the same, with the exception that Captain Oliver had Sundancers AI begin lessons. At first they were resistant to beginning school, but when Sunny explained that the lessons would be on starship manufacturing, assembly and operations, they became more enthusiastic.
In truth, Sunny was clever enough to select a base subject that required them to learn many others, such as mathematics, sciences, and engineering - while wrapped in the fascinating practical necessities of starships. So instead of boredom while learning differential calculus, physics or chemistry, they had an immediate use for their new found knowledge applicable to a very exciting field. Sunny had taken the time to download the two scholastic transcripts before they left their home station. Lan was stronger in mathematics, having completed her first course in calculus and scoring well on testing. Joe was weaker in mathematics, but had done very well in engineering and orbital mechanics for his year.
Sunny's extensive resources made her a good teacher, but it also helped that, being an AI, she was an immortal being with infinite patience, with substantial information on how the human mind worked. Keeping her captain in top shape was her prime directive after all, and she was designed to solve problems. Educating two teenagers would take up less than one tenth of one percent of her neural processing power.
After their arrival at the shipyard, Captain Oliver left the ship alone, as children in the massive industrial station would be very out of place. He was still trying to maintain some appearance of normal operations. Left alone with with the ship, they studied what they could see of the shipyards operations in the view port, and on the screens on the bridge. A large inter system liner was attached to a huge umbilical arm that was both an access tunnel, carrying personnel, materials and equipment into and out of it, and an anchor point, securing the massive vessel to the shipyards structure. The tiny suited figures crawling over the hull resembled crabs crawling over a whale. There was a massive gaping hole in the hull, where it looked like the reactor and major engine components were being removed. Frequent bright sparks of plasma welding and cutting illuminated parts of the scene in sharp black and white relief. As they watched, a massive part of the hull was freed from the ship, being guided away from the construction site by a large powerful arm. The arm released the section and it drifted towards what looked like a floating junkyard. Several of the crabs lifted off from the hulk, and attached themselves to the part, guiding it into a positing and then returning to the work at hand. The shipyards solution to storage of massive objects in space was relatively simple, they just set things off out of they way, made sure their velocity exactly matched the shipyard, and let them float until needed. Only occasional maintenance by one of the work-bots was needed to keep things tidy.
Eventually though, even this unique vista couldn't keep their attention any more. Joe finally left the bridge, and wandered about.
In response to Sunny's question, he said,"I just can't wait anymore, I need something to do." He rejected Sunny's suggestion to resume their class on orbital mechanics. After a few moments his face lit up with an idea.
"Hey!" he said, "How about training in EVA suits and airlock operations? That could be useful!" Sunny considered this, and then acquiesced. Joe and Lan had both been trained since they could walk on how to don the emergency escape suits that were a ubiquitous part of life for families in space. But the EESs were designed to sustain life in a vacuum for up to 72 hours. They were just armored bags with a helmet, mittens, boots, life support and a simple reaction motor with limited burn time. They weren't the elegant working suits that allowed a near acrobatic freedom of motion needed to accomplish complex tasks in space.
Sunny directed Joe to one of the ships airlocks. The airlock itself was the usual chamber with a door that opened to space, a second door that opened to the ships interior, and enough room for several people or reasonably large items to pass through in either direction. Inside the interior door, was another chamber, this one with lockers and suits. The noticed that their names were on two of the lockers. They each opened their respective locker and found hanging inside EVA suits of the latest manufacture, These suits were light weight, using complex carbon nano tube fabric that provided the required fifteen pounds per square inch for their human wearers, while still being very flexible. There was a ring around each neck that fitted a helmet, which provided the user interface for communications, access to water, and of course, air. The helmet was a marvel of engineering, almost unbreakable, the wearer could set any part of it from opaque to transparent as needed using the wrist pad. By turning their head slightly a small tube provided access to water, and audio was picked up and played through tiny transducers. It was very light, and resembled a slightly oval soap bubble. A transponder built into the suit allowed Sunny to track it until the power supplies ran down. The small back-pack carried power, atmosphere regeneration, and water supply. It fit neatly between the shoulder blades and extended downwards to about mid back. It was smooth and permanently part of the suit.
"Please direct your attention to the screen," Sunny said, and one of the wall panels lit up, a suiting up vid played, with Sunny providing commentary and advice on donning and using the suit, it's capabilities, and procedures for exiting and entering the ship. There was some momentary awkwardness when the part about waste handling came up, as the fitment for those functions was specific to the sex of the wearer, and the instructions were detailed and left nothing to the imagination, When venturing out into the most hostile environment known to mankind, information on how to survive trumped modesty or awkward teenager reactions.
When the lesson completed, Sunny directed them to don their suits. They quickly pulled off their ships jumpers, and climbed in to their suits. The compression method of retaining pressure on the wearer meant that any garment that could bunch up or form a wrinkle would become a painful hot spot in a short time, that would become unbearable, and eventually could also cause damage to the wearer so typically their light undergarments were all that was worn while using the suits.
At first the suits appeared almost comically too large, but this was a design feature to enable them to be put on with a minimum of effort. They turned and looked at each other, and with a nod, they pressed the activation panel on their wrist pad. Each suit immediately contracted around their bodies, resembling a second skin. there was a moments discomfort as the suits over contracted, the internal computer testing the fit and suit integrity, then the suits relaxed to their normal skin-tight compression.
At Sunny's direction they moved about the room, getting the feel of wearing the suits. In truth it was like wearing very tight fitting workout clothes. They felt pressure everywhere, but had no trouble moving about.
"Very Good" Sunny observed. "Let's put on the helmets now, and run some final checks." They each collected their helmet from where they floated, and attached a small tether between the helmet and suit, put it over their head, and twisted the base of the helmet into the collar on the suit. Early attempts at making the helmet integral to the suit had met mixed results. It seems the ability to remove the helmet while still wearing the suit in an atmosphere was more important to the end users than the slight reduction in reliability in the simple electro mechanical joint.
They touched their wrist pads and their suits went through the final checks, pressure and power were both confirmed at full levels. They were ready to go.
"I will reduce the airlock pressure now." Sunny said. She had run her own diagnostics on the suits, her link to the suits computers giving her authority over their operation. As the pressure fell, so did the feeling of compression. The suits provided the fifteen pounds per square inch the humans needed, but when worn in atmosphere the wearer felt that pressure, once a in a vacuum, the lack of atmospheric pressure reduced the compressive feeling of the suits. They became hardly noticeable.
They moved around in the airlock under vacuum. After a few minutes, Joe asked, "So Can we go outside?"
"Standby" Sunny replied. She checked the area around herself to make sure nothing would be a threat to the two neophyte astronauts, and checked her control linkage to the suits reaction motors. Worst case, she would simply assume control and stuff them back into the airlock bodily. "All set" she said after a few seconds, "Please face each other and hold hands."
This position would provide the most support to Joe and Lan as they exited the ship. The first experience in exposed space could be, dramatic. The exterior door opened at about half it's normal speed. As it slid away, it exposed a black rectangular void. Sunny dimmed the airlock internal lights, and the stars appeared. Countless stars became visible. They pushed gently outwards towards the opening and slowly floated out of the ship. Before them stretched the universe, with nothing between it and them but a few millimeters of fabric and transparent polymer. They were roughly oriented with the long axis of the ship. Below them hung the Red Planet, Mars, in all it's dusty sand blown glory. They could see details, sand storms, valleys and mountains. To their left, or the ships bow, the shipyards massive structure, cranes, arms, ships, and the huge central rotating cylinder floated, sparkling in reflected light, and the working lights of the active complex.
So taken in by the view, they would have floated beyond safe limits, so Sunny gave their suit thrusters a short command, and they stopped about two meters away from the airlock door. Being born and raised in space, they had experience in zero g movements, They released one pair of hands, and rotated themselves so they could face outwards away from the ship.
"Wow" Joe said.
"Yeah," Lan Replied, "this is... amazing."
They spoke in hushed voices, as people who enter a church do, they felt the awe of the experience. Sunny gave them some time to just float there, holding hands, and enjoy the expanse of the universe that had opened in front of them. She had to admit that even her artificial consciousness appreciated the grandeur of space, although with a degree of precision and accuracy no human mind was capable of. While a human mind would look at a star system and see beauty in the gas giants, or nebula, Sunny found beauty in the mathematical perfection of a cluster of moons orbiting a planet, the precision of the frequency of pulsars, down to a hundred decimal places. How the frequency of the cosmic background radiation, the very echo's of the act of the creation of the universe created harmonics with all the mass she could sense. She could feel joy at riding a gravity wave and boosting her drive efficiency, but not the excitement of traveling on the wave. She could tell you the wavelength of the color of a star, but not that the particular shade appealed to her. She found beauty in her own way, but it was not a human way.
Eventually, she said "OK, lets try some basic maneuvering shall we? Joe, you start, just get to the forward edge of the airlock, and place your feet on the exterior of the hull."
Joe slowly released Lans hand, and, pressing a few commands, enabled manual control of his thrusters. He could now control his motion by moving a few fingers on each hand, sensors in the gloves and the suits onboard computer would translate those motions into thruster commands. Joe could control speed and vertical with his left hand, and rotation in both axis with his right hand. He gingerly twitched the fingers of his right hand, until he was facing where he wanted to go, he over corrected, and had to rotate back. Once aligned he flexed his left pointer finger, and felt his suit push him in the small of his back, the push subsided. He had a small velocity towards the spot he wanted to land. He flexed his knees and 'landed' by absorbing as much of the momentum as he could, otherwise he'd rebound off the ship. A tiny pulse of the thrusters was all that was needed to stop the tendency to float away. He 'stood' there, his feet lightly touching the hull, knees bent. As long as he didn't move to aggressively, or push off with his feet, he could stay there. He triggered the thrusters and turned to look back at Lan.
"Very good Joe!" Sunny said. "Now, stay there until Lan joins you. Always stay together." This last admonishment was not needed, but bore repeating. As scuba divers of old knew, so did people in space, the buddy system was one of the best safety protocols available.
Lan triggered her thrusters, she nailed her rotation to face Joe, but came in a little to fast. She couldn't absorb all the momentum and rebounded slightly off the hull. It looked like the worlds slowest high jump. She grunted slightly, annoyed. Then triggered her thrusters again, and settled gently next to Joe.
"Well done Lan!" Sunny was glad they seemed to be taking to the controls and systems. "Lets try some more exercises now, and really see what you can do."
Sunny ran them through a series of exercises that involved them maneuvering in ways that would make a gravity bound acrobat jealous. Even in zero g, they had begun to sweat a bit, as they were not as relaxed as more experienced crewmen would be, they over worked themselves, where experience would let them use momentum and the thrusters together to minimize their effort they clenched muscle in futile attempts to shift their mass or momentum.
"Time for a short break" Sunny finally said. "While you rest lest review emergency procedures. On the right side of your pack, you can reach back and find a small tube protruding. Grasp that and pull it out."
They did so, finding that the tube would extend as far as they could easily reach.
"Now, just above where the tube comes out of the pack there is a small port. Plug the tube into each others port. This enables two users to share one support pack, in case one is damaged. While using the buddy system, you must hold hands, as if you pull away and disconnect the tube, you'll have to reconnect quickly, as the person with the failed pack will only have the air remaining in their suit, which is about 3 minutes worth."
They listened and nodded, more serious than their years implied they could be. Both had seen accidents in space, and knew the seriousness behind such instruction. The price of this knowledge had been paid in blood.
"If you have to maneuver using buddy air, the disabled pack should be held in front of and about waist high on the person with the operational pack. That will keep the center of gravity close enough to allow essential maneuvers. Be careful not to pick up too much speed, as you'll have twice the mass and the thrusters will need more time to change your velocity. Don't rush, under these circumstances return immediately to the nearest airlock."
"In the event of communications failure, you can still talk through sound conduction via your helmet to another helmet, of possibly a solid surface. Try this now. Touch your helmets together gently, and speak without triggering your coms systems."
They faced each other and brought their heads together slowly, in a slow motion pantomime of a gentle kiss. Their helmets touched, and they held each other to keep them together.
"umm, Hi" Joe said. Lan heard his voice, only slightly muffled, as if he was speaking to her through a door.
"Hi back" she said, "this is pretty amazing! Did you know we could do this?"
"I hadn't thought of it until you mentioned we had space suits aboard while we were in the shop. I didn't think either the Captain or Sunny would actually let us. It is so cool!"
Lan nodded in agreement, she was just as surprised at this turn of events, but delighted. Even living in space, few people actually venture Outside.
As they held their helmets in contact, Joe noticed their faces were very close together, he saw she had tiny freckles across her nose, and flecks of gold in her brown eyes. He looked into those eyes, until the silence grew a little too long, and was finally ended by Sunny resuming radio coms with them. Later on, Joe's thoughts would linger on how looking into two golden flecked brown eyes had made him feel so much, more even than the vastness of the entire universe stretched out before him had done.
Sunny had finished her instructions, she had assumed the spike in heart rates had been due to the momentary isolation. Their voice profiles didn't indicate stress however. Her vast psyche came to a conclusion, Biology, she though, bemused.
"You two take a few moments to look around, and then we'll end this exercise. I believe the captain has concluded his business, and we'll be loading out our cargo soon."
As they enjoyed the remaining few minutes of their first space walk, Lan looked back towards the drive end of the ship. It faced away from everything, into deep space, and the view was spectacular. She looked again, there seemed to be something shiny moving around near that end of the ship. Being over a kilometer away, she had to look hard, but yes, there was something. Maybe one of the crab like working suits the shipyard personnel used. She couldn't be sure. It might have just been light glinting off of something harmless.
"Sunny, " Lan said, "Is there something going on at near the engineering section? I thought I saw something moving over there, but I can't be sure".
Joe turned and looked as well. "I don't see anything," he said.
In fact Sunny had detected what appeared to be one of the shipyards worksuits, operating near the engineering section. It was suspicious, as the suit had disabled it's lights and transponder, which was illegal and highly dangerous, as if anything had happened the occupant would be lost in space, unless they could restart the transponder. It did however provide a high degree of stealth, which explains why it was able to get within a few meters of the ship before she noticed it. Had Sunny not had her two charges outside the ship, where she was monitoring the environment she might have missed it. Maybe, she liked to think not much got past her, and she was usually right. She enabled camera's and captured images of the work suit, confirming that's what it was. She noticed that the external registration markings had been altered, meaning it would be very difficult to find the operator now.
To Lan she said, "Yes, I see something there as well. I'll look into it. Meanwhile you two return to the airlock and get changed, we're boarding cargo and technical crew in about an hour. Best you're ready."
Joe and Lan entered the airlock and the door slid shut, once again shutting out the vast universe from the interior.
Sunny, the greatest multi-tasker ever, monitored and assisted Joe and Lan exiting their suits and the airlock, at the same time, turning her available sensors to a small spot on the exterior of her hull, adjacent to one of the ventral thrust nozzles. Her quantum circuits flickered though entangled states as she considered the multiple meanings of someone in a stealth posture attaching something to the outside of her hull without her knowledge. Even her artificial sense of self felt indignation at that violation, however she realized there was more here than meets the eye, much more. She sent a very discrete encrypted signal to Captain Oliver, one that only he would hear and understand.
They would have some interesting things to discuss soon.

  • In bicicletta o a piedi
https://preview.redd.it/kvd30hv0c63d1.png?width=363&format=png&auto=webp&s=2c6488f8aa6deb314cf78cfbd4203d36f2b7a468

Training

This was my 2nd marathon attempt, with the first one ending disastrously in a DNF just before the 20 mile mark. The training for the failed attempt had gone horribly as I was suffering from Plantar Fasciitis and I missed the final few weeks. Foolishly I tried to do it anyway and my ankle blew up 20 miles in.
This time round I had fully recovered from PF and training had all gone to plan, my training plan went up to 20 miles long run (twice) which was the furthest I'd ever run up to this point. Most of my long runs were done at about 6:00/km pace which translates to 4hr 13m but I was keeping those at an easy pace so I set myself a goal of sub-4.

Pre-race

I travelled up to Edinburgh on the Saturday, arrived in the afternoon with my wife and did a little bit of sightseeing and shopping. In the evening we met up with 2 friends, one who was doing the full and one who was doing the half. We had some pasta and talked race tactics and stressed out about the weather forecast!
I had a surprisingly good night sleep before the race, I woke around 6:30am and had some coffee and flapjacks as pre race fuel. One thing that made me anxious was I was unable to take a dump, I tried a couple of times but only managed gas.
The weather was very wet on the morning, it was raining non-stop from the moment I woke. I met up with my friend and walked roughly 20 minutes to the start area, the rain was getting consistently heavier and by the time we reached the start area it was a full on downpour. We managed to find some shelter near the bag drop area and nervously waited for 10am. At around 9:45 we said our goodbyes, I was starting from the orange pen and he was yellow. As I got to the orange pen the rain intensified and it felt like a full on monsoon, several hundred runners were taking shelter under the canopy of a university building and I managed to squeeze my way in, the energy was nervous and there was a bit of a grim silence as the minutes ticked by and the rain lashed down. Finally 10am came and everyone made their way to the corrals, although we were waiting around 10-15 minutes before we actually got going, so I started off soaked to the bone.

Race

Miles 1-6
I was very surprised not to see any pacers, my pre-race plan had been to follow the 4-hour pacer for the first half and then see how I felt after 13 miles. However, there were no pacers to be seen, which was quite a shock given this is the 2nd biggest marathon event in the UK after London, so I set off with the crowd and had to rely on my Garmin for pace. Despite the pouring rain there was a good number of spectators cheering us on as we ran through the city centre, there's a very steep downhill section early on and due to the heavy rain there was a torrent of water running down it meaning it was fairly treacherous under foot, it was slow going at this point as the course was packed and you were at the mercy of the pack.
By mile 3 I was completely drenched from head to foot and I could feel my clothes and running rucksack become noticeably heavier, certainly not the greatest start. Nevertheless, I resolved not to let the wet weather ruin my day and decided to just get on with as best I could. Just before mile 6 I ran past my wife with her cheer squad and managed to give her a quick peck on the cheek, at this point the rain had subsided and I managed to get my earpods out of my vest and put on a podcast to get me through the next couple of hours.
Miles 7-17
This was where I really got in the zone, the miles were zipping by and I was feeling strong, I managed to mostly dry off and the podcast kept me distracted, although at around 15 mile mark the battery on my earbuds died so I put them back in their case to recharge, ready for the final 6 miles playlist I had prepared. I think at about 16 miles I felt a strong belief that I would get this finished and achieve my sub-4 goal. I did some mental calculcations and realised I was actually in line for sub-3:50 which became my new on-the-day goal.
Miles 17-21
Around this time, the sun came out and was surprisingly warm which, along with the undulating hills, started to sap my energy. The miles were definitely not zipping by anymore and my pace was slowing down. I was sweating heavily and tried to grab a water at every opportunity. At mile 20 I fished out my recharged earbuds and put on the final 6 mile playlist, mostly comprising of cheesy 80s songs from Rocky and a few heavy metal bangers. This definitely helped me keep going and I tried to focus on the music rather than my increasingly strained body.
Miles 21-finish
Now I understand why they say the real marathon starts after 20 miles. This bit was sheer willpower, every minute felt like an hour. I tried my hardest not to look at my watch but every time I did barely anytime had gone by. Every ounce of concentration was poured in to taking the next step. To help me keep going I visualised crossing the finish line and seeing my wife and friends, I kept repeating in my head I WILL DO THIS, I WILL DO THIS, I WILL DO THIS. I realised my new dream of going sub-3:50 was slipping away but I knew even if I slowed down to 7:00/km I should still make sub-4.
The closer I got to the finish, the more walking wounded and collapsed runners I saw, one guy nearly collapsed on top of me but I managed to catch him, thankfully there were medics closed by and they came running to his aid. The pain at this point was all consuming and I could barely even think, I just knew I was so close and had to hang in just a tiny bit longer. Once you got to Musselburgh, where the finish line is, the course was lined with supporters and spectators cheering us on which was a huge help, I put my earbuds away and soaked in the atmosphere from the crowd, my legs were screaming out to stop and I could feel cramp creeping up on me in the calves but once I passed the 26 mile mark I got a final burst of energy and adrenaline from the crowd and sped up to the cross the finish line on 3:53:55.

Post-race

I stumbled through the finish area and picked up my goodies in a daze. I was delighted with my time and giddy with emotion. Somehow my wife managed to find me, there was no phone reception whatsoever so co-ordinating with others was almost impossible. I sat on the wet grass and wolfed down a cereal bar, when I stood up I felt extremely dizzy and had to sit straight back down, I stayed down for a while and downed an electrolyte drink which seemed to help. We waited for my friend for about 30 minutes but then the rain really started pouring again, the finish area turned in to a muddy bog and we still had no phone signal so decided to head back to the city. Once we'd got far enough away from the crowds we managed to get phone signal and ordered a ridiculously expensive Uber back to Edinburgh city centre.
Back at the hotel I had the longest shower of my life and we cracked open a bottle of champagne to celebrate.

Reflections

As I write this, a little over 48 hours after the finish, I'm still in a fair amount of pain. When I stand up or sit back down my quads are screaming and I just generally feel like I've been hit by a bus.
At the minute I have zero interest in ever running another marathon. I also have a new found respect for those people (freaks?) who do challenges where they run back to back marathons on consecutive days, or anyone who does an ultra. But I'm delighted I've done it and achieved my goal of sub-4, I have a half booked in for later in the year and who knows what the future will hold.
Thanks for reading :)

2024.05.28 13:18 sarcasonomicon What color is Alex?

I’m the third. Alex the parrot was the second. A man named Karl Schuster who lived in Berlin in the early 1900s was likely the first. In total, only three individuals are known to have overcome the natural cognitive limits of their species’ brains. Alex did no harm. Mr. Schuster, I’m afraid, may have inadvertently damaged reality. My transgression may be humanity’s undoing.
I didn’t want to hurt anyone. I just wanted to be like Alex.
What made Alex special? He is the only animal to have asked a question.
Lots of animals communicate. Whales and birds sing their songs to each other. Coyotes use barks and howls for identification. We’ve been teaching primates sign language since the 1960s. But these animal tweets and howls and signs aren’t language. There’s no grammatical structure. No deep concepts conveyed - just surface-level stuff. I’m here, they say. I’m threatened, or breed with me.
Animals manage to transmit information and even desires through their species’ form of communication. But none of the thousands of animals observed by science have ever asked a question. Except Alex.
Alex was an ordinary gray parrot, purchased at a pet store by a researcher studying animal psychology. Alex was taught to identify shapes and objects and to speak the name of the items he was quizzed on. One day, while being taught to identify different colors, Alex turned to a mirror and asked “What color is Alex?” This is the only known case of an animal asking a question. Even the famous gorilla who liked to pose for pictures with his kitten and the chimpanzee raised as a human child never managed to ask a question.
As you cuddle up on the couch with Mister Snugglekins the cat, or make Mister Woof Woof the dog beg for treats, think about what it must be like to have an animal mind. Animals’ brains cannot even conceive of the idea of asking a question. They can wonder things: When’s dinner? Is this new person a threat? But the notion of using communication to get answers is beyond their capacity. The gulf between us and our beloved animals is truly vast.
Now, let’s take the next logical step. Is there a mind - can there be such a mind - that is to ours like ours are to animals’? What thoughts are permitted by the laws of physics but are unattainable to the limited machinery of our brains? What if we could improve our own cognitive infrastructure, so our own minds could grasp these currently-unattainable ideas. What lies beyond the ability to ask questions? Hyper-questions? What are they like? What is their purpose? Is there hyper-love? Hyper-joy? What accomplishments lie beyond our grasp?
I used to believe that these ideas amounted to only pointless philosophical wondering. Just stuff to talk about while you’re passing the joint around. Then I learned about Alex, who somehow broke past the cognitive limit of animal thought. If Alex can do it, maybe it’s possible for a human to do it. Maybe, I thought, I can do it.
Unfortunately it is possible for a human to do it. And unfortunately, I did.

In 2015, dozens of social media users posted images of a confused-looking elderly man slowly driving in circles in a Walmart parking lot. The emblem on the back of the car said he was driving Toyota Raynow. Toyota denies that a vehicle called a Toyota Raynow ever existed, even as a prototype.

I’m not the first researcher to set off on a project to improve human cognition. The eugenicists whose work flourished at the dawn of the 20th century may have been the first people to search for ways to adjust to the human mind. Of course, they had their own spin on the endeavor that, let’s just say, didn’t age well. Take a look at this: an excerpt from the Proceedings of the Third Berlin Conference on Eugenics, 1904. (Translated from the original German by me)
The session on Friday afternoon was opened by Mr. Gerhard Van Wagenen, who presented the report of the Berlin Directed Intelligence Improvement Society. If we are to develop ways of improving the overall intelligence of the human breed, Mr. Van Wagenen argued, we must have, as a guide post, the ultimate limit of human intelligence. Only when we know this limit, can we pose the fundamental question of our effort: Are we to use selective breeding to improve average human intellectual fitness in a population, or are we to find ways of advancing the limit of human genius itself into areas that no individuals born to date have occupied?
Our immediate research goal was therefore to find individuals for whom the light of genius burned, not just at all, but brighter than the lights of all others of that intellectual rank. We sought to find the one individual currently alive who can look down on literally all the rest as his intellectual inferiors.
It is known that in the mass of men belonging to the superior classes there is found a small number who are characterized by inferior qualities. And in the mass of men forming the inferior classes, one can find specimens possessing superior characteristics. Therefore, we shall search wherever those of superior intellect may be found, without regard to their current station.
Inferior classes? Intellectual rank? Try putting that in a research grant proposal today!
Mr. Van Wagenen and his assistants set out across Berlin and asked thousands of people a single question: “Of all the men you know who are still alive, who amongst them is the most intelligent?” They carefully reviewed the resulting list of thousands of names. They removed the duplicates and any female names that ended up on the list. (Those crazy eugenicists, right?) They tracked down each of these men who ranked as the smartest known by at least one male resident of Berlin, and asked them the same question, generating a second-stage list: the most intelligent people known to a group of individuals already considered very intelligent.
And they kept going. They generated the third-stage names, found those people and had them produce a list of fourth-stage names. And so on. This project took a year. There was a running joke in Berlin that Mr. Van Wagenen would only stop when the last name on the list was his own.
But, to Mr. Van Wagenen’s credit, he did not rig the study to identify himself or one of his patrons as the one individual who can look down on literally all the rest as his intellectual inferiors. Indeed, Mr. Van Wagenen eventually concluded that his year-long study was a failure.
A fraction of the people named, about eight percent, simply could not be found. We were appalled to note that a small percentage of the respondents identified themselves as the most intelligent man they knew. While the ultimate individual we seek could only truthfully answer with his own name, we took these first and second stage self-identifiers to be adverse to our research and ignored their input.
In a few hundred cases, pairs of individuals each identified the other. In smaller numbers we found sets of three, four, and even five men whose linkages formed closed loops of co-admiration, eventually working around back to the first man.
But the most striking feature of the data was that over three thousand lines of reported superior intelligence ended in the same name: Karl Schuster. Mr. Schuster had been a successful industrialist before suddenly retreating from public view later in life. Strangely, when we tried to find Mr. Schuster, we learned that he had, of his own volition, taken residence in the mental asylum located at Lankwitz.
He refused to see us when we paid a visit to his private room in the asylum. The only communication we had from him was a note related to us by the Lankwitz staff, in which Mr Shuster wrote:
“I’ve spent most of my life hiding from It. I have isolated myself here, with the notion that the confused noise of mental anguish that surrounds me would act as a form of concealment. I did not suspect I might one day be discovered by ordinary men. Please do not visit me here again.”
From his note, and the fact of his residence within the asylum, we must conclude Mr. Shuster had become a mental defective. Even more damaging to our research, we subsequently learned that Mr. Schuster was a Jew. This finding, unfortunately, invalidates our work. In the coming months, we will strive to find a protocol more suitable for investigation into the nature of superior intellect.
Let’s not be too hard on these anti-Semitic, white-supremacist eugenicists. I’m willing to cut them some slack because I’ve done far, far more damage to mankind than all of these guys combined. I should have listened to Mr. Schuster’s warning. I should not have let It find me.
* * \*
In 1954 a man arrived at Tokyo’s Haneda airport with a passport issued by the country of Taured. No such country exists, or ever existed. Despite the man being detained and guarded, he mysteriously vanished overnight.
* * \*
Where the eugenicists looked to make improvements in the human population over generations by controlling or influencing reproduction, I had a more ambitious goal - to make improvements to a specific human brain (my own) in-vivo. I set out to upgrade my brain while I was using my brain to figure out how to upgrade my brain. I had astonishing success.
I’m not going to tell you exactly how I did it, because it’s just too dangerous. I don’t mean because it’s dangerous to the person undergoing the process (which it is), but because doing so can lead It to notice you. I don’t care if you fry your own cortex. But having It eat even more of our reality will be a calamity.
The human brain consists of gray matter, which is the stuff that performs perception and cognition, and white matter, which deals with boring stuff like running your metabolism. The gray matter - your cerebral cortex - forms a nice thick layer on the outside of your brain. This layer wraps the white matter underneath. I found a way to use pluripotent stem cells to expand the thickness of my cortex. With careful dosing of the stem cell culture through a spinal tap, I created new layers of gray matter underneath my cortex. These new cells replaced the white matter that was there.
For reasons I don’t fully understand yet, the new cortical cells only become active when I have ingested a potent mixture of hallucinogens and antipsychotic drugs.
The process is arduous and very illegal. Experimentation on humans, even if the test subject is also the researcher, is extremely highly regulated. And the drugs I need to use are not available from the suppliers that the rule-following scientific community uses. This work was performed in isolation and in secret. No regulators. No administrators. No rules. Just pure scientific progress.
My laboratory is as unconventional as my approach to science. I’ve set up shop in an assembly of forty-foot shipping containers in the center of my heavily forested seven-hundred-acre plot of land. Privacy!

Thousands of people have vivid memories of news coverage from the 1980s reporting that Nelson Mandela died in prison. In the reality that most of us know, Mandela died in 2013, years after his release.

Uplift #1 - 3 cubic centimeters
By last October, after six months of stem-cell treatment, I estimated that I had added a total of three cubic centimeters of gray matter to my baseline cortex volume. I could already feel the effects of the diminished volume of white matter. My sense of smell and taste were all but gone. My fine-motor-control was diminished. I had weakness in my legs and arms. But I had three cubic centimeters of fresh cortex to work with. I only needed to activate it. To Uplift myself, as I came to call the process of thinking with an expanded brain.
I planned for the first Uplift as if I was planning a scientific expedition into an uncharted jungle - I stockpiled food and water. I stockpiled lots of drugs. I bought a hundred blank notebooks to record my uplifted thoughts in.
I filled a seven-day pill container with hallucinogens and antipsychotics. I scratched off the Monday, Tuesday, etc. labels on the pill compartments and relabeled them: hour 0, hour 1, and so on. I planned my first Uplift to last seven hours.
Over those seven hours, I learned how to make use of the new, extra capacity in my cortex. I filled notebook after notebook with increasingly complex thoughts. Here are a few excerpts:
Hour 1: The linguistic-mathematical relational resonance is far stronger than most have suspected.
Hour 2: Questions lacking prepositional multipliers of context prevent full expository [(relations)(responses)] yet, but (!yet) there is still an I in the premise.
By the fifth hour, I was fully Uplifted, asking hyper-questions and providing my own hyper-answers. What do the musings of a fully Uplifted mind look like? Page after page of this:
(((Imagine)Imagine[)Imagine)Relate->Time]<--Force(Animal,Object–>Think)
* * \*
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.
H.P. Lovecraft, Call of Cthulhu
* * \*
Uplift #2 - 5.5 cubic centimeters.
I waited a few weeks before my next Uplift. I needed time to recover from the mental strain of the first experiment, and to wait for a new dose of stem-cells to produce even more gray matter.
Although I only spent a few hours in an Uplifted state in my first experiment, I felt diminished as I returned to baseline. Hyper-questions. Hyper-answers. Hyper-joy. All of these are wonderful to experience. Life can be so much more rich and full with a post-human cognitive capacity.
But, as I learned during my second Uplift, there is also Hyper-fear.
I descended from my second uplift by screaming and running naked in the snowy woods outside my laboratory. As the drugs wore off, the activated sections of the new parts of my brain shut down. Thoughts that were clear one moment became foggy, like waking from a nightmare.
I fell into a snowbank, breathing hard. Only a trace of what terrified me was left rattling in my tiny, baseline brain: It. It noticed me. I occupied Its attention.
What was It? I knew exactly what It was moments earlier, when I had more gray matter to think with. But now I was like a dog trying to grasp the idea of a question. I was still afraid, but I couldn’t understand the source of the fear.
I returned to the lab and warmed up. Then I reviewed what I had written in my notebooks during the ten hour session. Most of it was the same sort of advanced writings that my now-normal brain could not comprehend. But, somewhere towards the end of the session, perhaps just before I shed my clothes and ran into the woods, I wrote this:
I know what Schuster was hiding from. Find out information about Shuster.
When I recovered from the strain of my second Uplift, I drove to town, where I was able to access the Internet. I found some information about Schuster in the same archive where I found the proceedings from the 1904 eugenics conference.
A short article in a Berlin newspaper described the man who had been named by so many people who took Van Wagenen’s survey.
…Mr. Schuster, at the age of fifteen, had made significant contributions to machine design, metallurgy, and chemistry. He founded four companies which he ran nearly by himself, without a large management staff to insulate him from the workers and day-to-day engineering tasks…
It seems that most of the people who identified Mr. Shuster as the most intelligent person they knew had known him well at this time in his life.
Another article, written in 1905, described strange event at his funeral:
…Also present was a contingent of a dozen people who claimed to have been friends with Schuster during the five years he spent in America. Many who had known Schuster for his entire life stated that he had never been to America, let alone spent five years there. Did a group of people mistakenly attend the funeral of the wrong man?
Everyone in attendance had similar memories of him. All recognized his photograph on the coffin. Indeed, some of the America contingent had letters, written in Karl’s hand and signed by him, fondly recalling his time spent in the New England woods. It is as if there were two Schusters: the one who lived his life in Germany and the other who spent years in America.
Uplift #3 - 6 cubic centimeters
Perhaps I’ve allowed my cortex to consume too much of my white matter. I now have trouble with perceptions. The woods surrounding my laboratory have been transformed into a city. Where there were trees, there are now charming stone buildings from a European city. The song of birds and the whisper of the wind in the trees is gone too, replaced with streetcars and voices speaking German.
I prepared my pill container and notebooks for my third Uplift, as the sounds of a busting turn-of-the-century city rang through the metal walls of my laboratory.
Although I had dozens of blank notebooks prepared, I only made one page of notes during my third Uplift:
I met it today. I know what It is. It is alive. Not just alive. Hyper-alive.
It is built into the very material that logic and mathematics is made from. The digits of the square of pi, when computed to the billionth quadrillionth place, is a sketch of a fragment of its structure.
It consumes pieces of reality. It weaves them into its being, and leaves the tattered shreds of logic and causality to haphazardly mend themselves. It ate the circumstances of Karl Schuster’s life, leaving the ragged edges of different universes to stick and twist themselves back together, like shreds of a tattered flag tangling together in a gale.
It has only begun grazing on the small corner of Hyper-reality where humanity lives. Imagine a cow eating grass from a field. A field where humanity lives like a small colony of aphids on a single blade of grass. It likes it here. It likes the taste of reality here.
I tried to tell it to go away. That we are here and have a right to exist.
It replied to me, in its way. I found its words at the bottom of a twelve-dimensional fractal, woven into the grammar of a language with an infinite alphabet. It taunted me with a question: “What flavor is Alex?”
Update to the Proceedings of the Third Berlin Conference on Eugenics, 1904
Mr. Gerhard Van Wagenen provided the committee with an update on his finding that the individual Mr. Karl Shuster was strikingly-well-represented in the responses of his survey on intelligent men. Mr. Van Wagenen writes:
Upon further reflection of the results of my survey, I returned to Lankwitz again to try to meet with Mr. Schuster. I arrived to find his ward in an uproar, as only a few minutes prior to my arrival, Mr. Schuster had been found missing. The preceding letter, which is reprinted here in its entirety, was found in Mr. Schuster’s room. While the letter does not indicate where he went or even how he managed to slip away from the asylum unnoticed, it does show the extent of his derangement. His detailed descriptions of question-asking birds, strange events from the future, and even methods of biological manipulation unknown to science are not the product of a mind that we wish to recreate. Perhaps intelligence, as a phenomenon of nature, is more complicated than we are able to appreciate with our current notions of science. If I may speculate even further, perhaps Intelligence is a phenomenon we should avoid study of, lest we learn things about ourselves that it is best not to know.

I am Bin Liu from Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. Today, I would like to share my Buddhist experience: how the Three Golden Buddhist Practices of Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door saved me, a late-stage lung cancer patient.
I have been practicing XX Dharma Door for >20 years and have been a vegetarian for >10 years. In July 2012, due to unexplained weight loss, I went to the hospital. After a series of tests, I was diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer that had metastasized to my brain. At that time, my daughter kept the severity of my condition from me, but I had a vague sense that something was seriously wrong. The doctor said surgery was not an option, and that I needed immediate radiation and chemotherapy. I firmly insisted on being discharged from the hospital. My daughter reluctantly agreed, so I left the hospital after only undergoing the tests, without receiving any treatment.
The following 5 months were like living through a nightmare, filled with the excruciating pain brought on by cancer. My daughter took me everywhere in search of alternative treatments, from traditional Chinese medicine to various folk remedies, but none proved effective. My health continued to deteriorate, and my weight dropped from over 40 kilograms to just 25 kilograms. I could no longer walk and had to be carried in and out by my daughter. The most dreadful part was the constant, unbearable pain that lasted 24 hours a day. My entire body was so sensitive that any touch, no matter where, would cause intense pain.
The torment of cancer made me feel truly hopeless. One day, I whispered to my daughter, "Living like this is worse than death," and we both cried. Not long after, I noticed that despite drinking plenty of water, I didn't feel the urge to urinate. My daughter consulted a doctor at the oncology hospital, who explained that it was due to tumor compression, indicating that the cancer had likely spread throughout my body. There was no solution, just palliative care at best, with medication costing 500 CNY per pill, once a day. It felt like a death sentence, waiting for the inevitable day.
On January 1, 2013, I was already drifting in and out of consciousness (this was later recounted to me by my daughter). The day after New Year's Day, on the verge of passing away, news of my illness spread quickly among Buddhist friends I had made while volunteering at the XX Dharma Door practice center. Friends whom I hadn't seen for years came to visit upon hearing the news, bringing with them a glimmer of hope — Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door. They arranged for urgent help from a senior practitioner in Nanjing, who then contacted Master Lu's office for assistance. To our surprise, despite Master Lu's busy schedule, He responded within a few days. With guidance from Master Lu, step by step, we followed the assigned practices: Three Golden Buddhist Practices, making vows, liberating lives, and reciting Buddhist scriptures.
As the Lunar New Year approached, I learned that on New Year's Eve, reciting the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance 87 times could eliminate much of the karmic obstacles generated in this lifetime. So, on the evening of the thirtieth day of the lunar month, I made a solemn vow to Guan Yin Bodhisattva, committing to lifelong vegetarianism, liberating 20,000 fish, printing 10,000 copies of Buddhist scriptures, and transforming 1000 sentient beings. Despite being bedridden and unable to walk, with the support of relatives and my daughter, I made my way to the Buddhist altar. In a state of extreme weakness and pain, I struggled to complete the recitation of the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance 87 times.
The next day, on the first day of the Lunar New Year, I felt completely transformed — spiritually uplifted and with a much-improved physical condition. Filled with confidence, from then on, fellow practitioners accompanied my daughter in conducting numerous fish liberations, releasing 10,000 fish within a month. With their assistance, we also printed Buddhist scriptures of Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door and delivered them to temples, where the monks helped me distribute. Additionally, I began diligently completing the daily recitation given to me by Master Lu every day.
Despite improvements in various aspects, my health suddenly deteriorated again. Just when everyone was puzzled and confused, my fellow practitioners helped me secure a second consultation with Master Lu. Master Lu's reply was brief but resonated deeply with me. He pointed out that after practicing the XX Dharma Door for >20 years, I couldn't let go of it. His guidance during the second consultation helped me realize that I needed to recite Buddhist scriptures with Him first to eliminate my own karmic obstacles before I could save myself. From then on, I dedicated myself to reciting Little Houses every day at home, and my health improved day by day.
One evening, feeling a bit uncomfortable, I called out three times, "Master Jun Hong Lu, please protect Bin Liu even more." Suddenly, I saw Master Lu's Dharmakaya, tall figure in a dark suit. I was truly excited, and the discomfort disappeared instantly. My fellow practitioners told me that seeing Master's Dharmakaya meant I was saved, which boosted my confidence even more.
Now, I am just like a normal person. I can go grocery shopping, cook, and take care of my granddaughter's diet. My weight has also increased to over 40 kilograms.
So far, we have burned >3,000 Little Houses for my karmic creditors and released over 40,000 fish. Because of my living example, my daughter, her colleagues, friends, neighbors, relatives, and some old Buddhist friends who used to practice XX Dharma Door have all started practicing Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door. My daughter, who didn't know a single Buddhist scripture before, can now recite 7 Little Houses every day. This year, our whole family attended the Hong Kong Dharma Conference, and we applied to become disciples of Master Lu. I am truly grateful to Guan Yin Bodhisattva, Master Jun Hong Lu, and all the fellow practitioners who have helped me!
Everyone understands that in our past and present lives, we have all made mistakes and accumulated significant karmic obstacles. Only by eliminating evil thoughts and distractions, and following the great compassion of Guan Yin Bodhisattva, along with practicing Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door under Master Lu, can we eliminate the karmic obstacles within ourselves and return to the embrace of Guan Yin Bodhisattva.
Today, I am deeply grateful to the Bodhisattva for giving me this opportunity to share my Buddhist journey at this auspicious Dharma Conference. I want to tell friends who, like me, have suffered from illness and torment, that it was Guan Yin Citta Dharma Door that saved me and allowed me to be reborn. I hope that all fellow Buddhists have the opportunity to return to the embrace of Guan Yin Bodhisattva in this Dharma Decline Age, cultivate their hearts and minds, break free from the sea of suffering, and attain enlightenment sooner.

2024.05.28 08:32 RepresentativeOk651 John the Baptist (part 2)

”In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it. There was a man having been sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the Light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the Light, but he came to bear witness about the Light. There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens everyone. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to what was His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John *bore witness about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has been ahead of me, for He existed before me.’ ” For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him. And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” Therefore, they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” He said, “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.” Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but among you stands One whom you do not know. This One is He who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy to untie the strap of His sandal.” These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. On the next day, he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who has been ahead of me, for He existed before me.’ I did not know Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing with water.” And John bore witness saying, “I have beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He abided on Him. And I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The One upon whom you see the Spirit descending and abiding on Him, this is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself have seen, and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” On the next day, John again was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” And the two disciples heard him speak and followed Jesus. And when Jesus turned and noticed them following, He *said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day. It was about the tenth hour. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first *found his own brother Simon and *said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. When Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).“ ‭‭John‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬-‭42‬ ‭LSB‬‬
”Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus *said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes and you hear its sound, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and bear witness of what we have seen, and you do not accept our witness. If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? And no one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light lest his deeds be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been done by God.” After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He was spending time with them and baptizing. And John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people were coming and were being baptized— for John had not yet been thrown into prison. Therefore there arose a debate between John’s disciples and a Jew about purification. And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have borne witness, behold, He is baptizing and all are coming to Him.” John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven. You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’ He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. So this joy of mine has been made full. He must increase, but I must decrease. “He who comes from above is above all, he who is of the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all. What He has seen and heard, of that He bears witness; and no one receives His witness. He who has received His witness has set his seal to this, that God is true. For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand. He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”“ ‭‭John‬ ‭3‬:‭1‬-‭36‬ ‭LSB‬‬
”And Jesus went out from there and *came into His hometown; and His disciples *followed Him. And when the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and many listeners were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to this man, and such miracles as these performed by His hands? Is this man not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?” And they were taking offense at Him. And Jesus was saying to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household.” And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And He was marveling at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages teaching. And He *summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and was giving them authority over the unclean spirits; and He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a staff only—no bread, no bag, no money in their belt— but to wear sandals; and He added, “Do not put on two tunics.” And He was saying to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave town. And any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them.” And they went out and preached that men should repent. And they were casting out many demons and were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them. And King Herod heard it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, “John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him.” But others were saying, “He is Elijah.” And others were saying, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” But when Herod heard it, he kept saying, “John, whom I beheaded, has risen!” For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her. For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” Now Herodias was holding a grudge against him and was wanting to put him to death and was not able; for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he was keeping him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; but he used to enjoy listening to him. And a strategic day came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his great men and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee; and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you.” And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to half of my kingdom.” And she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” And immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. And immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. And when his disciples heard this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb. And the apostles *gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught. And He *said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.) And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves.“ ‭‭Mark‬ ‭6‬:‭1‬-‭32‬ ‭LSB‬‬
”And the disciples of John reported to him about all these things. Summoning two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are You the One who is to come, or should we look for someone else?” When the men came to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the One who is to come, or should we look for someone else?’ ” At that very time He cured many people of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits, and He granted sight to many who were blind. And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the gospel preached to them. Blessed is he who does not take offense at Me.” And when the messengers of John had left, He began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft garments? Behold, those who are splendidly clothed and live in luxury are found in royal palaces! But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and even more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send My messenger ahead of You, Who will prepare Your way before You.’ I say to you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” And when all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they acknowledged God’s justice, having been baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and the scholars of the Law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, not having been baptized by John. “To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children, sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, who say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’ For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by all her children.” Now one of the Pharisees was asking Him to eat with him, and He entered the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. And behold, there was a woman in the city who was a sinner. And when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume. And standing behind Him at His feet, crying, she began to wet His feet with her tears. And she kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume. Now when the Pharisee, who had invited Him, saw this, he said to himself, saying, “If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner.” And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he replied, “Say it, Teacher.” “A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?” Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he graciously forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.” And turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet. You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” Then He said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.” And those who were reclining at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this man who even forgives sins?” And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”“ ‭‭Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭18‬-‭50‬ ‭LSB‬‬
”And it happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.” And He said to them, “When you pray, say: ‘ Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. ‘Give us each day our daily bread. ‘And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.’ ” Then He said to them, “Which of you has a friend and will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and from inside he answers and says, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot rise up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not arise and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs. “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. But what father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish? Or, if his son asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. Now it happened that when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the crowds marveled. But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.” And others, testing Him, were seeking from Him a sign from heaven. But He knew their thoughts and said to them, “Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a house divided against itself falls. But if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. And if I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? For this reason, they will be your judges. But if I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are undisturbed. But when someone stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, he takes away from him all his armor on which he had relied and distributes his plunder. He who is not with Me is against Me and he who does not gather with Me, scatters. “When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there, and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.” Now it happened that while Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed.” But He said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.” Now as the crowds were increasing, He began to say, “This generation is a wicked generation; it seeks a sign, and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. The Queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And behold, something greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah. And behold, something greater than Jonah is here. “No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light, but when it is bad, your body also is full of darkness. Therefore watch out that the light in you is not darkness. If therefore your whole body is full of light, with no dark part in it, it will be wholly illumined, as when the lamp illumines you with its rays.” Now when He had spoken, a Pharisee *asked Him to have a meal with him. And He went in and reclined at the table. But when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first ceremonially washed before the meal. But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but inside of you, you are full of robbery and wickedness. You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make the inside also? But give that which is within as charity, and then all things are clean for you. “But woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithe of mint and rue and every kind of garden herb, and yet disregard justice and the love of God, but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seat in the synagogues and the respectful greetings in the marketplaces. Woe to you! For you are like concealed tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it.” Now one of the scholars of the Law answered and said to Him, “Teacher, when You say these things, You insult us too.” But He said, “Woe to you scholars of the Law as well! For you weigh men down with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers. Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, but your fathers killed them. So you are witnesses and approve the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs. For this reason also the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and some they will persecute, so that the blood of all the prophets, shed since the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be charged against this generation.’ Woe to you, scholars of the Law! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.” And when He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to question Him closely on many subjects, plotting to catch Him in something He might say.“ ‭‭Luke‬ ‭11‬:‭1‬-‭54‬ ‭LSB‬‬
”Now it happened that when Jesus had finished giving instructions to His twelve disciples, He departed from there to teach and preach in their cities. Now when John in prison heard of the works of Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to Him, “Are You the One who is to come, or shall we look for someone else?” And Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see: the blind receive sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who does not take offense at Me.” Now as these men were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ palaces! But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send My messenger ahead of You, Who will prepare Your way before You.’ Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force. For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call out to the other children, and say, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.” Then He began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles were done, because they did not repent. “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles had occurred in Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. Nevertheless I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. And Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will descend to Hades; for if the miracles had occurred in Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day. Nevertheless I say to you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for you.” At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”“ ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭11‬:‭1‬-‭30‬ ‭LSB‬‬
”At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus, and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” For when Herod had John arrested, he bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. For John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” And although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they were regarding John as a prophet. But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod, so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Now having been prompted by her mother, she *said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” And although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths, and because of his dinner guests. And he sent and had John beheaded in the prison. And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came and took away the body and buried it; and they went and reported to Jesus.“ ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭14‬:‭1‬-‭12‬ ‭LSB‬‬

Advantages of Investing in Arkansas Land
There are numerous benefits to investing in vacant land in Arkansas. Above all, Arkansas is renowned for its budget-friendly land prices, making it an appealing choice for those seeking to invest in real estate. Relative to other states, land prices in Arkansas are frequently much lower, which means you can obtain more land for your resources. This presents a tremendous opportunity for those desiring to own a larger tract of land for farming, ranching, or recreational intentions.
Another advantage of investing in Arkansas land is the state's low property taxes. Arkansas boasts some of the most modest property tax rates in the nation, rendering it an enticing option for those interested in purchasing land for long-term investment objectives. Additionally, Arkansas extends a variety of financial perks for landowners, including tax deductions and subsidies for land conservation and stewardship, which can make possessing land in Arkansas even more appealing.

Deliberate on the climate and other environmental factors that may influence the land's suitability for your intended usage.
Zoning and Land Use Regulations: Before procuring vacant land in Arkansas, it is crucial to comprehend the local zoning and land use regulations that may impact the property. Different regions of Arkansas have varying zoning prerequisites, which may restrict the types of structures or activities permitted on the land. Be sure to investigate the local regulations and seek advice from a real estate professional or land use attorney if any uncertainties arise.
Access and Utilities: It is imperative to consider access to the property, as well as the availability of utilities such as water, electricity, and telecommunications. Certain rural properties may lack access to public utilities, so it is essential to comprehend the expenses and logistics of providing these services to the land.
Topography and Soil Quality: The topography and soil quality of the land will also substantially influence its suitability for your projected usage. Ponder the terrain, slope, and drainage patterns, in addition to the soil type and fertility, to ensure that the land is suitable for your purposes.
Prospective Development Potential: When investing in vacant land for long-term purposes, it is crucial to assess the potential for future development. Investigate the area's growth trends and development blueprints, as well as any potential alterations in land use that could impact the property's value and potential uses.

St Lucia Estuary Sunrise
St Lucia Estuary is a small village/town at the Southern Entrance to Isimangaliso Wetlands Park. The first UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Africa.
Isimangaliso Wetlands Park is a Natural wonder, literally translated from Zulu, stretching from about 280km North of Durban all the way to the Mozambique Border, placing St Lucia about 280km North of Durban and about 280km South of Mozambique.
The Park is roughly 256000ha in size of witch the St Lucia lake system, a very dynamic system, is about 36000ha. Starting at Mkuzi Swamps in the north draining into the Indian ocean in the South about 80 km away.
Home to thousand or more Hippopotamus and Crocodiles. These Hippos visit our small hamlet almost every evening to mow the grass on our pavements and wide open areas.
St Lucia, the town, has some shops and various seafood restaurants, two Backpackers, various affordable self-catering accommodation and couple of Guest Houses.
Our main attraction is the Estuary Hippo and Croc Tours. Isimangaliso Wetlands Park host the Big Five over two sections. The Eastern and Western Shores of St Lucia host four of the five and Mkuzi Game Reserve is home to them all.
56km Due East is the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reserve. The drive there will take you through the heart of Zululand. Exposing your Camera to a glimpse of poverty, but proud humble hard working substance farmers embracing modernity.
The Eastern and Western Shores are well developed with self-drive roads, not always rental car friendly, but always exposing the visitors to ample wildlife and feather folk. Sometimes you may have the unfortunate discomfort of Elephant encounters.
Bibs Accommodation is one of the better established backpackers in town situated on the verge of natural forest that established on the banks of the Estuary.
Pardette and myself walk on these beaches daily. Capturing these beautiful sunrises and the Boats Launching from the beaches embarking on Deep Sea Fishing adventures and winter Whale Watching.
