2024.05.15 01:33 Dewey_Really_Know Instead of soda, I drink one of these a day.

This may not be for everyone as quinine can have adverse effects on certain individuals, but the bold flavor forces me to enjoy it one sip at a time and it usually takes me at least an hour to finish enjoying one.
An added plus is that its sweetener is agave instead of your typical sources of sugar, such as corn syrup.
Something to consider perhaps if you’re struggling to quit soda!

2024.05.14 23:55 H0n33yb4b Kombucha sus

Ive made 3 batches. Batch 1. Strange. Yucky. But successful.
Batch 2. AMAZING GORGEOUS FANTASTIC DELICIOUS IT WAS GONE IN A WEEK.
Batch 3. Plasticy???
It goes away when i mix it with a bit of juice but im just so confused??? I used plain black tea, i didnt use too much sugar (however i did use a bit of blue agave syrup aswell) and for the 2nd ferment i used strawberries, ginger, and blueberries
Help? Where did i go wrong? Was it the agave? Do i havw to make a new scoby because i tainted it ??
I sanitize everything with extremely hot water and give it a good scrubbing of any potential residues or debris, then i let it all cool before starting my mombucha process. Im just so confused in where i got the plastic from.

2024.05.14 22:03 XxMeZzYxX Additive vs Additive free

I just found out that certain mixto tequilas can be considered additive free tequila such as the El Tequileno blanco (not 100% agave) version which is pretty cool considering they have natural ways of applying sugar. Now I know that the Clase Azul reposado was proven to have additives, but what about their other versions such as the Clase Azul Ultra (extra anejo) or even the Dia de Muertos version. Are those confirmed to have additives? I am also curious on certain variants of Don Julio bottles too like the Don Julio “Real”. I’m wondering why major companies wouldn’t at least make some of their tequila additive free if they have an exclusive/limited version of the standard mass produced blanco/repo.
Also, when considering additive free vs additive tequila, does anyone know if there is a big health concern with what is included as far as the 1% additives? (glycerin, caramel coloring, oak extract, and jarabe or sugar-based syrup) I read online that it is all considered safe as long as you don’t have too much of it etc etc.
At the end of the day, I have expanded my horizons to verified non additive tequila. I now have and drink more non additive tequila though still own/drink some with additives as well. I am learning more and more by the day and appreciate it as such. Ty all! Salud!

2024.05.14 05:45 whitelightningz0 Right way to make a classic Margarita

My brother and I are both bartenders. I've been doing it for about 6 years but hes been working for a few years in a restaurant but only 6 months as a bartender. We came to a disagreement yesterday about the right way to make a margarita.
I'm more of a traditional and solely believe a margarita needs no more than 5 ingredients: tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice (fresh. We agree on that), ice, and kosher salt. His claim was that a margarita isn't a margarita, or even a good margarita, without Agave syrup. Our ratios are as follow:
Mine- [2:1:1] for tequila : orange liqueur : lime juice
His- [2 : .75 : .5 : .5] for tequila : orange liqueur : lime juice : agave syrup
I understand that most times people add sugasyrups to accommodate for more sensitive palates nowadays, but I believe it is completely unnecessary and arguably too sweet to have 1:1 ratio of lime juice and agave syrup. I like mine more tart. I don't think it completely changes the drink but I think it's an insult to claim the one he makes is THE way to make a margarita. I don't order margaritas at other places because they make them to sweet, in my opinion.
I make my old fashions by muddling an extra orange slice and cherry, but that's to my taste but I know that's not a classic old fashion and wouldnt serve it unless asked to. That's the one I like cuz I like more of the filthy cherry taste, but I am aware that's a not a true old fashion and I know how to make a real old fashion and would respect it if someone knew how to make a real old fashion.
In the end, I hold the believe that it's important to learn the right way of making a drink and respecting them before you start breaking the rules
That said, what are your guys' take?

2024.05.13 02:22 starflite Looking for products which are not tested on animals, but DO contain silicones/sulfates/etc!

I’m on the struggle bus with low porosity 2C curly/wavy hair. I would love to try some shampoo/conditionestyling products with silicones/sulfates/anything just to see what it does to my hair. However, I cannot find anything with modern sulfates and silicones which is not tested on animals.
Does such a thing exist? It looks like everything not tested on animals is always sulfate-free and silicone-free.
I’ve been using Raw Sugar bounce back shampoo, Shea Moisture Virgin Coconut Oil conditioner, and finishing by rotating between All About Curls gel, Biolage Blue Agave styling gel, and MoAC Curl vitalizer. My hair feels kind of weighed down and stringy no matter which styling product I use, and even if I only shampoo and condition without using product. Frizz is also a problem. I feel like it’s maybe the conditioner because other coconut oil products have made my hair feel dead and sad, but those also made it impossible to detangle, and that’s not a problem with the Shea Moisture conditioner, so I’m really not sure what to think.
I have ordered the Shea Moisture Low Porosity products to try, but I’d really like to compare to something with the “bad” chemicals in case my hair is happier with those.

2024.05.11 04:54 SlimeSpree KY Slime & Lime Slime Review (with pics!)

KY Slime & Lime Slime Review (with pics!)
I have so many reviews to get caught up on I'm posting twice today which I hope you guys don't mind! Two more and then I better get my ass to bed. I don't know what is more ludicrous, how much slime I buy or how late I stay up messing around with it! You live once, right?
Kicking it off with:
KY Slime
All the way from Hawaii to me in the UK! 8oz pots priced between $13.88 and $17.88. Excellent, attractive packaging (pink tissue paper and peanuts in the box) and came with Borax. Well designed and unique waterproof labels. KY packages their slimes along with their add-ins in individual plastic packaging which is a fantastic idea because you immediately know what goes with what and can get started. It’s also very helpful in the instance of a spill and one of the sauce pots did indeed manage to ooze a little slime. As this was contained within the plastic bag I was able to wipe off that one slime without having the upset of my entire order being slathered in escaped slime!
So inviting! I couldn't wait to dig in!

  • CHEESE FOAM WHIP (signature KY Whip texture, cream cheese frosting and sweetened condensed milk scented)
A yummy and accurate cream cheese frosting scent. It felt very dense, smooth and plush and was well activated, non-sticky, matte, very stretchy and elastic with strong resistance. It inflated into a very holdable, chubby and dense fluffy true butter texture. Very nice indeed.
A perfect texture for making a mouth-watering swirl!

  • TARO MILK TEA CHEESECAKE (snow creme, taro pie scented)
There is a lot of very clever artistry going on here! first off this smelled so much like taro which was brilliant! Secondly, the Boba balls were squishy foam balls which was a big surprise and makes a tremendous change from the usual hard beads which are typically purposed as boba in slime. Some of them also popped when you gave them a squeeze which was a very satisfying little touch. Thirdly it was a really fun slime to assemble and looked stunning!
The slime itself did feel a little bit dried out and rippy but was still fun to stretch and inflate. it inflated a great deal becoming a super foamy whip. It had quiet to medium finger pokes and decent pops. Absolutley huge on the soft sizzle front. Very flubbery (gives that hollow sounding "tup" sound when you give it a tap) and altogether satisfying to play with.
Absolutely beautiful slime!
Look at that big chub! You can see the soft sizzles waiting to tickle your ears and fingers!

  • CARAMEL CLOUD MACCHIATO (Multifloam, buttery caramel scented)
This smelled exactly as stated and my mouth was absolutely watering! A delicious looking floam with a well activated base that looked exactly like caramel!! Very fun to play with with good gummy stretch and tons of bubble pops and crackles. After a while of play, it started to get a bit sticky and to spit out little piece of base which stuck on my background. The balls didn’t fall out.
This looked and smelled so much like caramel, very cleverly designed slime.

  • SPRING BOUQUET (DIY clay slime, scented with notes of orange peel, pink pomelo, sweet passion fruit, florals and berries.)
This was such an eyeful! Slime art which feels a shame to destroy. The clay wasn’t that soft and seemed a bit dry but nothing too terrible. The scent was a pleasant, floral leaning perfume. This turns into a very dense, slightly tacky butter with resistant, chewy pulls. The texture lacked fluffiness to me and was a bit dense and playdoh-like.
https://preview.redd.it/ad4qkn2hdpzc1.jpg?width=2843&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f71f03810deaa02fb53d9ef1c9876b52d25ff482
During and after combination

  • BOBA CREME DONUT (DIY clay butter fizz, boba shop brown sugar)
Another cutie to set up. The clay was much fresher in this one. This time the Bobas were hard beads. The scent wasn't bad, somewhat like a doughnut but it was a bit subtle. Combined, this was once again a bit tacky. It was a very dense slime with quiet fizz from the microfloam. I didn’t find the texture the most pleasant and it lacked the satisfying fizz sounds on the stretch (though had plenty of soft sizzles.)
This shop's slimes look so incredibly inviting when assembled.

  • WAIKIKI BEACH (DIY sand, coconut suntan lotion scented)
Another spectacular art piece! The prettiest beach themed slime I ever did see and the palm tree was just gorgeous! This was just so cute and beautiful, a crying shame to destroy but what else is slime for! The scent was a bit weird to my nose, a bit musty and almost rubbery and I wasn't so keen. Unfortunately this was a lot more spectacular to look at than I found the resulting texture to play with. It wasn't a terrible slime but just very light in sand so just felt like a slightly gritty, dense, rubbery jelly with little pops. I did notice some debris in the way of little bits of lint in the white foam prior to assembling which was a slight turn off as I'm a bit of a germaphobe. Absolute full points for aesthetic here but a slight disappointment on the combined texture.
Just STUNNING!
What a dream this slime is to look at!
Another little private island for me. I love these and this was the prettiest so far but I found the texture a bit boring sadly.

  • VANILLA BUTTERCREAM FROSTING (signature KY Whip texture, buttercream frosting scented)
This is a pretty good vanilla buttercream scent but it’s got a little bit of a chemical undertone coming through as well that interrupts it for me.
This was a very dense, heavy feeling, slightly dry memory dough that again felt a little bit rippy but does fluff up to a holdable texture. The formula just felt a little bit dry and the surface a little tacky. Medium finger pokes but great bubble pops.
https://preview.redd.it/deo77l6dfpzc1.jpg?width=5581&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c41ed57608fe28c6e37632ed703e1c510eeab517

  • BOBA MILK TEA MOCHI (DIY clay, brown sugar and condensed milk scented.)
This smelled pretty good though not the star of the show scent wise compared to some of the others. The clay mochi were soft and combined to a very dense memory dough with decent pops.
https://preview.redd.it/3kedhhzjfpzc1.jpg?width=6037&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db782e6d1c8bc033c25b76f07e9bd8bd285ea3c8

KY make some of the most attractive, decadent looking, beautifully designed slimes I have seen. Regretfully they lost me a little on some of the textures which I felt were leaning towards the simplistic, Peachybbies-esq, child/beginner focused and lacking in nuance, finesse and textural intrigue and variation. Nonetheless this is reflective of my personal taste and I always stress your milage may vary. This is a company I would definitely recommend you try as the designs are beyond beautiful, many of the scents absolutely wonderful and many of the textures perfectly entertaining. Perhaps just not a company that offers exactly what it is I am personally seeking texturally, or indeed perhaps just a reflection of the slimes I selected and I needed to dig a little deeper into their offerings. 7.9/10

Came with a full sized free slime and have waterproof labels with a lovely aesthetic. The jars are 8oz and priced from £12.15 to £15.39. I apologise for hopping between $ and £ in these reviews but it's dependent on what the websites show me.

  • CINNAMOROLL’S YOGURT (thick, blueberry yogurt scented)
I absolutely adore the "Oui" aesthetic, it reminds me so much of a French Yoghurt, having grown up partially in France! The scent is extremely beautiful and SUPER realistic like soft, creamy blueberry yogurt! It was a little melted and sticky on arrival and in need of a fair few squirts of activator and a bit of working in but it did calm down very well. Lovely silky and clicky with plenty of big bubble pops and big chewy stretches. This was inflating, jiggly and fun and the colour absolutely perfect. I have a thing for soft blue slime and this was the best of them shade-wise.
https://preview.redd.it/e6944tdvjpzc1.jpg?width=5628&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4ec59e3eadfa2b590346476a2f59946730b0a93a

  • EGG YOLKY GLOSS (wood glue thick, mango milk tea scented)
Another great scent, soft, fresh and very accurate. A nice medium thickness glossy, well activated and non-sticky with a super cute label. Wonderful, clicks, pops and crackles. After a little warming up, it is a fairly loose jiggly texture the benefits from a little bit of activator to keep up the handleability.
https://preview.redd.it/73jwg484kpzc1.jpg?width=5388&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=713752347bbb3f03dd58ef439694d5d1c8e08ab8

  • POMPOM PUDDING (puddin’ texture banana with a hint of caramel scented)
A very nice, slightly caramelized banana scent and I’m always quite fussy about banana scents! A thin and jiggly glossy texture that was fairly melted and needed a bit of activation but these are activating very well. Full of crackly, pops and absolutely massive wet clicks. This was generally quite sticky on my play surface. This is like a western take on a Korean puddin' texture and far more handleable that the Korean versions I have tried. I prefer thicker, slightly more holdable textures but I know many people adore jiggly slimes and I can't imagine this would go down very well if this was your preference.
For some reason this image failed to load so please click here.

  • RECEIPT (crumbled paper texture, wet printed paper scented)
I was unsure what I was gonna think of this scent from the description but it was very pleasant like a soft soap. The label was so perfectly designed and great fun. It was a tiny bit sticky, which was easily solved with activator. The texture was a massive surprise, very much like matte wet paper, very nice in hand. It was very smooth and stretchy with quiet finger pokes that get louder as it inflates, and it inflated a ton to a puffy, foamy texture with a magnitude of soft sizzles. It does get a bit sticky as it gets larger and called for a little more activator. It had soft bubble pops and was a lot of fun to play with.
https://preview.redd.it/7yo8p18xkpzc1.jpg?width=5322&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a8b916d55015e55090b511d125cc0876d0fe40d3

  • WHIPPED KIRBY MOCHI FOAM (whipped foam, strawberry cream and watermelon scented)
This smells very nice of soft, strawberry candy and the charm it comes with is super cute! I particularly love mochi themed slimes which come with a powder to dust over the top, very nice and realistic touch!
Very loose, soggy texture that needed a fair bit of activator but turned into a nice, jiggly, stretchy cloud crème. It had soft finger pokes that got much louder with inflation and soft bubble pops. Very lovely and silky soft in hand, a massive inflator. Again needed a little more activator as it inflated but was massive on the soft sizzles which is always a win for me!
https://preview.redd.it/nzaak2x9lpzc1.jpg?width=4991&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d70d8ebc0d16ae540af967cffcf244077a4d61d2

  • WHIPPED CHEESE FOAM (whipped foam, black tea scented)
I was excited for this scent but found it disappointing. I was getting more so getting soft perfume than black tea. Same deal with activation being needed again but it didn’t take much before it was perfect. This texture is a little thicker, chubbier and matte. Quieter clicks, and bigger bubble pops. Jiggly, foamy and inflatable with tons of soft sizzles. I've run out of Reddit's allowed image space so please click here for pics.

  • LEPRECHAUN MAGIC (bingsu/iceec agave lime scented) Free slime.
Sadly this was literally glue when I opened the pot, completely melted and I decided not to proceed.
Lime Slimes had a beautiful, well thought out aesthetic. I absolutely loved their product names, designs and scents. These gave the impression of a Western take on Korean textures. My only disappointment was that many of the slimes were melted and needed some time being attended to with activator and kneading before I could get on with carefree play. A lot can be said for Momo and others sending out their slimes a little over-activated, I prefer that to melted any day of the week!
A lot of these had heavy crusties in the lid and seemed to have separated somewhat and it felt to me like they weren’t the freshest. I don’t know if perhaps I was sent slightly older stock due to them being between restocks? These jiggly textures can often be a bit tricky. I’ve read some people reporting this on the sub and others stating they received their slimes in perfect condition so either there is a bit of a consistency issue or they are literally intended to just be as such. Once fully activated they were absolutely great! There was so much to like about them that I have since ordered a few more upon their restock and am excited to revisit their lovely slimes to see if my experience differs ordering straight after a restock. For now 8.5/10

Thanks for reading folks! I'll catch you again tomorrow with some new reviews! I've got some great ones coming up so feel free to give me a follow so you don't miss 'em! 😊

Hello! I'm working on a paper for school about the dangers of different types of food for birds, especially hummingbirds.
So far ive found foods that can cause candidiasis, iron poisoning, and botulism, and why you shouldnt feed things like honey, agave, powdered sugar, and red dye. what Im looking for now are the citations for my paper. I've found lots of articles or blog listings, but no research papers - if you know of any, that would be so helpful!! and if you have suggestions for other harmful ingredients or effects I should add to the paper, please let me know. 2024.05.06 18:24 Grand-Pumpkin3951 What flavors would lessen a peppery/earthy plant taste?

Greetings, I have an all-natural functional soda beverage I am creating. Originally, it was a fruity-like drink consisting of kiwi/watermelon flavors, carbonated water, agave and some functional plant ingredients. Later, we added some citrus flavors to get the plant extract's peppery/bitter flavor hidden. To offset the flatness of the flavor the drink needed a bit of tart so we added cherry to a sample and then strawberry - taste testers loved the strawberry. As of today, the drink tastes much better with the tartness of the strawberry, and the peppery flavor is almost completely hidden, but the mouth feel seems off still. Words to describe the mouth feel would be, sharp/tangy/acidic... What natural flavors would soften this up? Anything you could recommend to make it sweeter without upping the calorie count/sugar content? Last question, does more or less carbonation make the drink less/more sweeter? It seemed that way in the last sample round.
Thank you in advance!

2024.05.03 16:45 fatloufus Hello! I’ve been tasked with cooking meals for a woman with many food restrictions. I’ve made quite a few recipes already and the creative juices are running low. Please help!

This probably will seem like an odd set of circumstances. I work as a home health aide for a woman who is bedbound. I won’t go into details about her condition, but she has many allergies as well as foods that she avoids due to abdominal discomfort, etc. She also is on medications which cause weight gain, so low calorie is her goal. My personal goal is to make delicious food for a woman who I care for deeply. Please help me think of some fun new recipes I can make!
I’ll try to keep this list as concise as I can, and will answer any specific questions as best as I can in the comments!
Things she doesn’t eat: All dairy including eggs, all wheat, all processed foods, MSG, tomatoes, spinach, strawberries, almonds, miso, shellfish, trout, red meat, alcohol, nutritional yeast, sugar, honey, stevia, agave
She is currently trying to stay low oil, and low carb so potatoes and brown rice are on hold at the moment, but typically in rotation.
Things she does eat: chicken, salmon, most other vegetables, most fruit including dried apricots and craisins, herbs, Dijon mustard, most beans, lentils, garlic, onions
I have access to pretty much anything I need.
Ummmm I think I got most of it. I’ve been making her a ton of micro chopped salads and slaws with lemon vinaigrette, green goddess dressing (made with cashews) or orange ginger dressing. Baked salmon with a mango salsa. Red lentils with lemon vinaigrette and herbs. Bean salads. I reconstituted some apricots and made an apricot and mustard chicken that she loved (also use the juice as a sweetener). A ton of roasted veg. A cilantro and orange chicken. Fruit jam to put on rice cakes in the morning. Steamed artichokes stuffed with garlic and parsley.
I do not know what else I can make! I’m not a chef, just a hobbyist, but I’ve been having a lot of fun with it. I hope you will too! Many many thank yous!!!

I’m dying to make a cheesecake but I don’t want to go to the store.
This is what I have:
Whole milk Greek yogurt - a 2 lb tub but I used a little already. It’s still almost full.
Cream cheese - about 12 oz
Heavy cream - at least 2 cups
2 eggs
Vanilla extract
Plenty of sweeteners like agave and swerve. I don’t want to use plain granulated sugar I want it to be low in sugar.
A 6” spring form pan
Parchment paper
For the crust I have ritz crackers and butter and brown sugar..would that work?
Baking powder and soda
Frozen blueberries for topping
